Dopamine is that chemical trap that turns the uncertainty of risk into a compulsive quest for immediate reward. When gambling or any addiction hijacks this mechanism, you no longer seek true pleasure, but merely try to fill a void that keeps widening.

Absolutely. Dopamine is what triggers us to do a thing over and over again despite us wanting to quit it.
Its the same with most of the things whether it be gambling, drinking, smoking, impulsive shopping etc...
The only way to tackle this issue by doing a dopamine detox. Let the dopamine levels drop down.
I won't dive deep into it but we have to replace those activities by something else.

Everyone has dopamine traps. Someone likes to play computer games, and someone just likes to eat ice cream. In both cases, people get dopamine. The difference is how much and how often people need such a "cocktail" of their own feelings. We easily fall into the traps of everything we like, but we must understand that it is always necessary to have a healthy sense of proportion, and then neither gambling, alcohol, no anything more complicated can make us become a slave to addictions.

True, absolutely true.
What for you may be gambling, for someone it may be skydiving, for another it may be drinking and for another it may be smoking.
Basically everyone has their weak point, the important thing is to understand how we work and avoid the traps.

This is a very interesting topic, but it hasn't been fully explored! The picture is much broader-there's even a comprehensive scientific description of the processes-and I think everyone will find it interesting:

The main role in the development of gaming addiction (ludomania) is played by dopamine, as well as a whole cocktail of other neurotransmitters and hormones-adrenaline, cortisol, endorphins, and serotonin. All of them directly affect the brain’s “reward system,” turning the gaming process into a powerful internal drug.
Below is a detailed description of exactly how each of these substances affects the player’s brain.

The main "gaming" hormones and neurotransmitters

Dopamine (Anticipation and Motivation)
This is the key substance in addiction.
The maximum release of dopamine occurs not at the moment of winning, but while waiting for the result (when the slot reel is spinning or the roulette ball is falling).
A gambling addict’s brain reacts to a "near-win" just as intensely as to an actual win, compelling them to place another bet.
Over time, the receptors become desensitized, and the person requires increasingly higher stakes to experience the same emotions.

Adrenaline and Norepinephrine (Excitement and the "thrill" of risk)
Gambling is controlled stress.
The release of adrenaline constricts blood vessels, increases heart rate, and puts the player into a state of trance or hyperactivity.
The addicted person becomes hooked on this physiological sensation of acute risk.

Endorphins (Pain Relief and Euphoria)
Released at the peak of emotional tension (especially when winning).
They bring a sense of bliss and temporarily "shut out" real problems, anxiety, or physical pain.
Gambling becomes the easiest way for a person to quickly lift their spirits.

Cortisol (The Stress Hormone)
Large bets and inevitable losses cause intense stress, raising cortisol levels.
Normally, high cortisol causes a person to flee from danger.
In gambling addicts, this mechanism breaks down: hormonal pressure and panic force them to act impulsively, for example, by trying to "win back" their losses, which only makes the situation worse.

Serotonin (Emotional Stability)People with naturally low serotonin levels are more prone to depression, impulsivity, and attention deficits. They are more likely to use gambling as a destructive form of "self-medication" to artificially boost their mood and escape the dreary reality.

Testosterone (Risk-Taking Tendencies)
High levels of this sex hormone increase impulsivity and aggression and cause a person to underestimate risks.
This is precisely why young men are statistically more likely to engage in aggressive forms of gambling (such as sports betting or high-stakes poker).

And the conclusion: "How the cycle of addiction closes"
When a person isn’t gambling, levels of "happiness hormones" drop sharply, while stress hormones rise. A state similar to drug withdrawal sets in: irritability, anxiety, and apathy. The brain remembers the quickest way to restore balance,to start gambling, which is why the cycle repeats itself over and over

Hormones are very specific tools of our body; I once experienced firsthand how they can very strongly and unexpectedly influence our behavior, lifestyle, and even actions. I "corrected" my hormonal imbalances solely through sports-it’s a great way to reset the body and its hormonal "quirks"!

From my past experience, I've been through something like this myself. At first, I was just gambling for fun, but after playing slot games too often, I gradually lost control. It was as if I couldn't even recognize that I was developing an addiction. Whenever I had free time, I felt anxious if I wasn't playing slots. It got to the point where I would even dream about playing slot games while I was asleep.

Fortunately, after a very long journey, I managed to regain control and become a responsible gambler again. It wasn't easy, but the dark experiences I went through in the past taught me some valuable lessons and helped me change my habits for the better.

Thank goodness, losing control is not a good thing to give or to suffer when you have already lost control

I can ask you, both for myself because I'm very curious, and for others: how did you regain control?
I'm sure your experience can help someone.

I don't know if I have already reached 1000 hours, but I haven't arrived at the point where I will play pointlessly. I still love to gamble for fun and also to win money if there is an opportunity, but if this is the price I will pay if I ever reach 1000 hours, I have to be very careful then, I don't want to end up playing for the sake of playing, it feels like a zombie.  Cry

Having ability to manage ourselves in a right way and make the right decision is very essential in gambling, because everyone has a certainly meet of dopamine level and until we tried to maximize every potentially just to ensure that this does not take us to an extreme level of gambling addiction, this is where we must gamble in a more disciplined manner, because when we fail to caution our emotions in gambling, it may lead to other things beyond our comprehension.
Gambling control of your emotions is a skill that you need to practice all the time in order to take care of your mind. We can feel strong desire to continue playing gambling games, but we have to have the courage to break it in time. Money limits will help create more relaxed lifestyle. Keep the aim of healthy entertainment in mind at all times.

Lessons Learned from 1000+ Hours of GAMBLING : What I’ve Discovered !
Basically we all know that every individual must have Dopamine, the common language known by the public as "the happy hormone". In short, sometimes we don't notice that this happens to them spontaneously.

In the world of gambling Dopamine will stimulate and will occur when they win a bet, where that feeling of pleasure and sense of satisfaction will become a real motivation for the gambler.

For this reason, we often remind gamblers that if the hormone of happiness has peaked, the negative effects that will occur are gambling addiction, they will want to repeat and continue gambling, So Dopamine can be positive or negative depending on the individual's way of thinking, gambling really quickly stimulates Dopamine.

Gamblers has what triggers them to gambling some could be gambling for survival and for some could be for fun but from experience what I have discovered in my little years of gambling that has lead many to become addicted and lost self control over gambling is greed, this is a killing factor and the next one is chasing looses, some literally continually chase  losses so they can be able to win and recover what they have lost which is not possible in gambling because the moment you embark on chasing looses that's how you are open to more losses.

Dopamine works different on individual, for some it triggers one to gamble while it doesn't for some persons due to their levels of thinking and their reasons for gambling, it can also boast the Morales of a gambler once he wins and he will be controlled by that stimulation of happiness to want to be gambling everytime because he had won before.

After winning money through gambling, our emotions or greed can naturally arise, but it is very important to control it. If we can control our greed or emotions after winning or losing money through gambling and gamble in a disciplined manner, we can protect ourselves from the terrible addiction of gambling. But those gamblers who gamble aggressively after winning money out of greed, as a result, the gambler faces relatively more financial losses and the possibility of addiction increases. Therefore, it is better to gamble by determining the time and money before gambling, thus maintaining self-control over ourselves and protecting ourselves from the destruction of gambling.

Everyone should make an honest assessment of whether they are mentally and emotionally prepared for gambling. Of course, we all have emotions, but there are those who can control them better, those who can control them worse, and those who deceive themselves about their ability to control them. In the latter case, it will always be better to lie to yourself by saying that you are not in sufficient control, than in the opposite direction.

I think dopamine is what keeps people coming back in gambling. Personally I was heavily addicted and kept playing in a compulsive way that led me to losing a lot of money before learning my lesson. That lesson is the more you stay without gambling the less dopamine can impact your decisions, right now I am almost a month without gambling and I don't feel any need or urgency to get back to gambling so I guess this works for people looking a way out. Just don't gamble and I know it sounds very difficult in the beginning but once you reach this stage your overall health improves.
I think that everyone has different dopamine triggers, for some people it is not just about coming back to gambling, they can be gambling without even having such feeling but when they see that they missed out on an opportunity to win or see others winning this triggers dopamine rush and they start gambling carelessly.

Dopamine has a great role (or at least has been identified) but there are many other neurotransmitters that must be taken into account... for sure is nothing to blame.
it's always this or that, but never me, not saying that dopamine or other stuff don't affect people, they do, but at the end of the day, whatever you do, it's you who does it.
dopamine and whatnot certainly pushes people toward doing something they will probably regret once the rush is over, but you got to have some self control.

Dopamine is that chemical trap that turns the uncertainty of risk into a compulsive quest for immediate reward. When gambling or any addiction hijacks this mechanism, you no longer seek true pleasure, but merely try to fill a void that keeps widening.

https://www.talkimg.com/images/2026/06/10/UrLJjm.jpg

So after 1000+ hours of gambling, your conclusion is: Dopamine made me do it?!
at least it wasn't "the devil made me do it", so i would take a somewhat scientific explanation over that.

It's true, sometimes the desire to win like other players can often cloud common sense when gambling. This symptom is caused simply by the brain pulling the punches in order to receive validation from luck that is likely to never come. It's important to know that this kind of scenario is a trap and helps to prevent hasty and harmful choices being made with money.

It wasn't easy, but the dark experiences I went through in the past taught me some valuable lessons and helped me change my habits for the better.
this is exactly what I always talk about concerning gambling you may have in mind to gamble without benefiting and also entertaining yourself at the same time but there is a kind of money that you lose in gambling that will make you to be addicted in gambling unknowing it to you and the why you'll be addicted it is because you'll be looking for a way to recover what you have lost, and the a process someone who is a gambler started looking for what it has lost in gambling that will make the gambler to lose more than what it has lost before, so in gambling what we needed is to control our emotions so that will not lose more than what we expected to lose

Dopamine is that chemical trap that turns the uncertainty of risk into a compulsive quest for immediate reward.
And it triggers more when we're seeing the light colors from the casinos and with the combination of the sounds that we hear. So, its intensity is increasing due to that. Well, it didn't took me that long but thanks for sharing that. When we're being too happy when we want to get more rewards as we gamble, that's the sign that our dopamine is hitting ourselves then for which we need to be aware of it to avoid going further and so much losses.

The problem with dopamine is that you'll always crave more; the previous “dose” will no longer have an effect, and you'll need to increase it. This doesn't only happen with gambling; for some, social media is a small dose of dopamine, a short and immediate pleasure, and addiction sets in from this need for more.

This is a rather trivial discovery, or perhaps the author is hiding something. Perhaps he discovered something more interesting and captivating than the well-known dopamine. Dopamine is the hormone of novelty and exploratory activity. However, it appears that not all addictions are directly related to dopamine. Many people play the same games, or even the same game, for years. This suggests that the underlying cause of these people's addiction is clearly not dopamine, but something else.

Replacing that problematic activity with another one is one suggestion that can be followed, or perhaps they simply need to find another activity that is just as exciting as the one that got them into trouble, such as an addiction. And the development of that addiction is the result of one’s own actions while dopamine can be cited as the cause anything that captures our interest if done in excesswill ultimately lead to a tragic outcome.
