Poverty truly exists in underdeveloped countries, even though they are not, in fact, poor countries...
Though I've an idea what you're trying to say there, let me also quickly put it out here that poverty exists too in developed countries. That's why we have homeless people and beggars on the streets of Europe.

Quote
Therefore, a country's economy is completely destroyed when it is led by corrupt leaders, government, and officials. They have no plans to develop the nation, they only plan to enrich themselves.
You captured it succinctly well there. Just recently, the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice of my country, Malami, was made by a federal high court in the country to forfeit about 48 properties of his which were worth over N180 billion. He was accused of corruptly enriching himself while in office. One wonders what a sane person would do with such gargantuan wealth in a country where most people live in miserable poverty. The greed of man is unexplainable.

A lot of countries seen as undeveloped are actually blessed with a lot of mineral resources and Nigeria is number one on the list even though there are other countries in the same category as well. The case of Nigeria seems to be at the top of the list because there are lots of things going on in the country that are absolutely terrible, the country is not just underdeveloped but they are also dealing with a bad economy and also unemployment. Corruption is the main cause of these problems and if the problems isn't solved nothing will change.

https://www.transparency.org/en/cpi/2025/index/nga

According to Transparency International, our country ranks 142 out of 182 countries in terms of corruption, and in terms of the index score, it is 26 out of 100. Which is really very sad for us. And my question is repeatedly raised about why our country is poor despite having oil, gas, agricultural land, and mineral resources. I think that we have been kept poor on purpose, and corruption is really one of the reasons behind this. Corruption is mainly increasing day by day due to the wrong management of the government, where some groups are becoming very rich and wealthy, while the rest are remaining poor all their lives. And if someone gets a job while being poor and has an opportunity to commit corruption, he uses that opportunity to commit as much corruption as possible and embezzle money. Another thing is that when someone commits corruption, a case is filed against him and the opportunity to take proper action is created, the judicial processes take a long time to expedite. Due to the lack of proper justice, corrupt people remain outside the justice system. If corruption gose all parts of a country, then it is not possible to bring it back to a good position. How many people will you take action against? And those who take action against corruption are also involved in corruption. At the end of the day, ordinary people like us have to suffer. We have to live financially insecurely all our lives. There is always a lack of security in life.

You have said it all, but I’m just wondering if your statistics is accurate, because I’m expecting Nigeria to occupy the Top Spot, it’s not sad enough to understand that Nigeria isn’t occupying the top spot, and who are the people that put up this numbers, what are the criteria that was used to determine this positions, I assume this is just a random sample, personally I know Nigerian as the most corrupt country in the World, have you seen a country where the Government have no plans for the Citizens, they’re only interested in enriching themselves, Citizens are suffering, Inflation, bad economy and terrible government policies, bad governance that is what is destroying Nigeria.

Anyone that is elected into any Government office, instead of the person doing his job for the betterment of the country, they’re only interested in turning into a political tools to destroy and steal and embezzle money, money that is meant for development of the country is used for their own selfish ambition, it’s difficult to complete infrastructural project for Nigerians, but it’s easy for them to complete their personal projects, the justice system is poor in Nigeria because they’re controlled by those in power who are corrupt, bribery and corruption is their job, you can’t get justice in Nigeria where you’re expecting a Government official who stole and embezzled money to be held accountable, he will bribe the court and goes free.

When we talk about corruption, we talk about it like there is one set of people that are the corrupt people and bringing the country backward but what we don't talk about is the individuality that we can add to make sure that the country changes for good. Like we blame the government, blame the things we can see but we don't talk enough about what we do as individuals because we are the people that form the country.

If the country must change, we as individuals must be corruption free, you can't point fingers on other houses when you have broken glasses all over your houses, a average person that leaves in a corrupt country tend to have mind to want to do corrupt things because it's a norm in their society.

Everyone is as guilty as the government because people are corrupt in a way that their decisions affect everyone and what you just said its the real true, a country can't be much better if the people don't act differently, especially when they are dealing or working for the government and be of help to one another and not to act like the government, as a clear and kind mindset its what people need in a country, if the government can't be, then the people can be. Although, it might not be that easy, as they might not be getting offers when they were doing or acting like government.

I also think that not only the government but also the people are involved in the corruption of the country because if I mention only the job sector of my country, there thousands of people compete for a post and people offer to accept bribes to get them selected for the job. In this case, many times it is seen that even if an officer initially expresses reluctance to accept bribes, he is repeatedly lured in such a way that he is forced to accept bribes. In this way, an officer is basically driven towards bribery.
In that case, if the people of the country collectively expressed reluctance to pay bribes to government officials, then even if they do not receive bribes, the people in government offices would be forced to work.

That is just the fact. In a corrupt country the government is not the only corrupt people, the people living in the country are also corrupted as well. Mostly, it is not their fault because that is what they were raised to see.

Corruption starts at an early age in such countries, but people hardly notice, and they always blame the government for it. Let us take an instance of siblings in a household, the older sibling does something bad and the younger sibling sees it. For the older sibling to make the younger one keep quiet, he has to give her money or buy him/her a gift, which is also corruption, because bribery is a part of corruption.

We all have to change to get the change we are seeking for, that is just the fact. Still, corrupt leaders in the government are the main reason for the backwardness of the country. That is just the fact.

At this point of time I don't even think a less corrupt society is even possible as corruption breeds corruption and the cycle continues, in one way or the other I too I've done things that aren't that righteous so he have to pray that less corrupt government that has a little bit of empathy should rule and that would foster atleast some level of development and maybe start another cycle.

I think it is possible because if every person from their own position promises not to commit corruption, then as you said, one corruption gives birth to another corruption, the opposite can also happen. It may also be that due to everyone's awareness, corruption is gradually decreasing and at some point it is seen that corruption has been completely eradicated from society. But why is this not possible?
I still dream of a time when people in every country around the world will live with full rights and every country will be free from corruption.

You absolutely right, we're as guilty as the government, but the reason why we're unable to display our true colours is because we don't have the opportunity like those people who are in power. People are not genuinely satisfied with their blessings, and despite the struggles they fail to understand what a great thing they have. A country can only develop if the people collaborate with each other, there is no way the citizens will be able to change their country without changing themselves. We need to address several things if they truly want their country to develop like other countries, I knew that the developed countries also have their own problems and challenges, but not in high rate. We contribute to the challenges that we are facing in one way or the other.

I want to deny this but the fact is that it is. With corruption that has been like a culture in the end since the beginning/since childhood we were even taught to normalize corruption and I feel it until now.

We are too focused when the government does corrupt things but do not realize that we are also doing the same practices that we have considered natural from the beginning.

Starting from bribes when we want to be in class or in a good number of benches for teachers, bribes to state officials so that we are easier to take care of administration and others, this is like a fairly common thing that happens only because we normalize it makes us also actually are perpetrators of intentional corruption. In my country things like this are very common and unfortunately it is difficult to make people aware to get out of this kind of habit.

You have also confirmed that all the corruption starts from an early age, which justifies my point. The truth in this matter is that even if you are given an opportunity in the government, you will also embezzle public funds because the corruption is already in you, and you will feel like it is normal.

Stopping this will not be as easy as it sounds unless they introduce a very harsh punishment for those found guilty of the act. This harsh punishment must be capital punishment, like dead by hanging or even more, not it will not work.

Sometimes it's not thought, it's when the things that are consider abnormal are normalize in the society. Where an exam that is supposed to be standard and must be written by students without any help becomes what the teacher help their student so they pass and the student also appreciate their staff. This is a big corruption but because it has been normalize, people don't see the height of how bad this is a corruption, they see it as what they need to do.

So when they see things that are corrupt that they don't need to do, they don't have this repulsive reaction of how bad it's, they don't see as bad thing. A government organization will have a job opening for people to get which need to be done by merit but guess what, they are going to do it and make it nepotism where only their friends and families are going to be the one to get it, they don't see anything wrong in doing it that way.

If I were to say it from the perspective of my country, it would be a bit like the proverb "The throne changes people more than people change the throne."
I don't know if this proverb will be applicable to other underdeveloped countries. But the context of my country is very similar. For example, if I tell the story of a few years ago, there was a political party that was in power for 17 years in an authoritarian manner and the people finally ousted them from power through a movement, but later the political party that has come to power now. They have already started abusing their power, but they themselves used to speak out against those irregularities a few years ago.

Most countries swimming in the oceans of underdevelopment is only doing so because of one specific thing which is corrupt leadership system, i know questions like What if they lack resources may come up but I will be glad to make you understand that even with such situations a country with good leaders will overcome this underdevelopment challenges.
The primary obligations of leaders is to carefully utilise the available resources and make the best out of it but because of corruption that is in the blood of leaders, that is no longer in there agenda instead what they are looking up to now is selfishness and personal wealth which was not supposed to be part of there plans.

A wonderful example is Singapore!
Read its history-how Singapore transformed from a backward backwater into a thriving nation by overcoming rampant corruption! When I first visited Singapore and learned about its history, I was shocked-it seemed like a fairy tale or a work of fiction, but it’s reality. This is what happens when people truly want to change their country, even without vast resources.
Yes in the early 1900's Singapore's economy was among the poorest all because they lacked transparent and focused leaders them but when change came into there leadership structure everything took shape and Singapore whose GDP was know where compared to that of Nigeria and where even taking loans from Nigeria them transformed and became among the independent nations with a balanced nation  in the world now, which means once the corrupt leadership system is revamped the country experience great transformation within know distant time.

The greed of man is unexplainable.
gargantuan public funds to be precise so we do not begin to think the wealth you are referring to belongs to Malami. We have shameless politicians and corrupt public officials everywhere within the country looting our treasury every now and then and using it to enrich their pockets, their ambitions and that of their children at the expense of the general public whose funds have been entrusted in them. But we lack persuasive accountability from the citizens to these leaders therefore giving them the liberty to mismanage our funds without proper investigations

In my opinion, this is too utopian and unviable an idea. Especially when it comes to someone trying to break this cycle of corruption from below, without being in a leadership position. Because such a person will simply be pushed out of the system immediately, they will not survive in it. The only effective way to do something about it is to change everything from the top, concentrating power in one's hands and taking tough and far from always popular measures. What is needed is an authoritarian regime that is capable of completely changing the rules of the game and enforcing sanctions that will work unconditionally.

Because of the high level of corruption anyone who gets opportunity now make it necessary to themselves to become more corrupt than those before him, corruption now becomes a competitive ground of who will be the most dangerous of all time record, if not for corruption greed and selfishness of the leaders are the top our country is richly blessed, where the center could not hold things will definitely fall apart and that is why we are still were we are now, the top leaders are the pillers that is meant to hold the country, most of the time some Nigerians travel out of the country and never plan of coming back and this is because of how bad the country is and all of this is from the end of the top leaders, every new government always become worst than the previous one.

It will be hard for a whole country to have zero corruption but it's achievable to the minimal. However, it's not possible to achieve in a day. If you want to eradicate corruption from the community, you must start from the top, make sure that every official are people that have zero tolerance for corruption and then educate people about the consequences of corruption and then lastly, the government must be accountable for everything they are doing to encourage the people.

If after all these, then provide the best economy for people, like make grants and loans, jobs creation and other opportunities for people, if you can do these many people will be ready for change because I can tell you for a fact that people are corrupted because of bad system, the government are not transparent and even if the government has intention to make things work, they are not going to have trust in the people at the top.

I totally agree with you on this one, yes we all knew the Nigeria government is corrupt no doubt but we should also ask ourselves as an individuals how free minded are you when it comes to such judgement? I have somehow found myself in so many occasions where there will be some argument over some certain things that we all at that point knew it's wrong but you will see some people defending that thing that everyone knew it's wrong, then at that moment I will be like we all blaming our government but within ourselves we all not free minded people so what is the necessity of blaming the government while within ourselves we are not telling the real truth, and that has kept me wondering.
