Hi guys!

We had an old thread about Coin Wallet 11 years ago (OMG Shocked) — time to start a fresh one.

Coin Wallet is an open-source, self-custodial multicurrency wallet that has been around since 2015.
Supported coins: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, Monero, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Tron, Toncoin, Cardano, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Avalanche, BNB Smart Chain, Sui, Stellar, Kaspa, Sonic, Ethereum Classic, Dash.

Key features:

  • Self-custodial, open-source — Github
  • BIP39 passphrase enforced on wallet creation
  • Bitcoin address formats: Native SegWit (bc1q), Nested SegWit (3...), Legacy (1...), Taproot (bc1p)
  • Hardware 2FA — FIDO-certified security key (YubiKey) required for any sensitive action
  • Tor support: dedicated .onion mirror + built-in Tor via Orbot on mobile
  • RBF (Replace-By-Fee) — speed up any stuck transaction
  • BIP84 / BIP49 / BIP44 derivation paths: fully compatible with Electrum, Sparrow, Trezor, Ledger
  • Mecto  — peer-to-peer payments via geolocation
  • Available on: Web, iOS, Android (Google Play, APK), Windows, macOS, Linux, Tor
  • 30 languages support
  • And of course, in-app buy, sell and swap via third-party providers

It's strange that being 11 years in the field Coin Wallet doesn't support pairing with hardware wallets at least I didn't find this feature either in your description or on the official website. If it had this feature, I would probably test wallet, because besides Bitcoin it supports some other coins that interest me.

You highlighted authorizing any action with Yubikey. But in my view, this adds very little security advantage because it only matters in one case - when a stranger somehow gets their hands on the wallet. It doesn't protect against all other threats.

I've already tested this wallet, and it actually works in an interesting way.

But the fee structure model didn't appeal to me very much: https://coin.space/all-about-fees/

Are you thinking of switching to Bitcoin, especially?

I just wonder why you chose Changelly/ChangeNOW/ChangeHero[1] for your exchanges, because although the wallet is open source and "NO KYC", these services fraudulently request KYC.

Will there be support for multi-signature wallets, coin control, and the ability to connect to own full node ?

We already started discussing hardware wallet support in another thread, let's continue here. How widespread is this need actually? If you put aside the marketing and the nice picture. Does anyone have even a rough idea?

Fair point, the security gain is pretty small

These are 2 different things: creating a wallet, storing and sending - no kyc. But buying and swapping goes through third-party services (same as every other wallet?) and each has its own KYC policy depending on country, limits, currency etc. All the links are there.

Connecting to your own node, definitely not for now. As for "multi-signature wallets and coin control" - that's worth thinking about

Rough idea? Data below speaks for itself.

And after all, the number of crypto users who use YubiKey is far lower than the number of hardware wallet owners, but you bothered with this gimmick anyway, knowing it adds almost nothing to security. I have YubiKey but would never set up it to authorize my action on software wallet. Just imagine I lost my Yibikey.

wait, i'm confused... i understand what the network fee is for, but what's the additional fees for?

this is supposed to be a self-custodial and open source wallet, so why is there an extra 0.5% fee + 192 sats on bitcoin transactions? other supported coins have similar fees too.

Good question, I've never heard of a self-custodial wallet that charges a percentage in addition to the fee based on the amount transferred, aren't these fees for the swap function? I'm also confused.

Also, does this wallet has coin_control?

Wait, we're talking about support pairing software wallets like ours with hardware wallets like Ledger and Trezor right? But the sources only show overall sales growth - that doesn't really tell us anything. What we need to understand is specifically who uses both at the same time (software and hardware). And on top of that, hardware wallet advertising is allowed almost everywhere from Google, FB to marketplaces.

honestly, in terms of development effort these are completely different things - YubiKey support costs N resources, hardware wallet support costs N x 100 or more.

It does tell. All hardware wallets need software companions because they are only capable of signing transactions, not building or broadcasting them. Sure, most HW manufacturers build such software apps themselves, like Trezor Suite for the Trezor HW line, Ledger Wallet for the Ledger line, etc., but the problem is that all those apps are not ideal for many reasons, and HW owners seek better alternatives. For example, I have Passport Core from Foundation, which also produces an accompanying app called Envoy, but I don't use it; I prefer to pair my Passport device with Sparrow.
