It's an outdated scamming technique regular crypto users may not fall for this scam but for newbie it's still a powerful scamming technic. Although it's old technic we could say it's a good reminder for newbie. It would be more helpful if you add some details about how newbe could avoid it.
Just my reminder Never share your private key, private phrase or any key types information which can be used for accessing your wallets.

It could be old technic, but it's still a new thing for newbies to the cryptocurrency space who are trying so hard to learn and do everything right to avoid such kind of scams. I haven't seen this kind of message before as this is a first for me and I can say I have learnt from this post on his to tell the difference and in the future, I can detect and avoid such emails.
I also do some settings on my email that enables such kinds of emails to be in a spam folder instead of regular inbox so that i dont get it mixed up and get caught unawares thinking it is the real deal.

What I find really confusing is how they managed to figure out that you were once a user of such type of wallet.
I don't just want to believe that it's a random attempt to scam someone random, but who knows?
Why do you find it hard to believe that it's just a random scam attempt? I mean, it's not like they're sending physical letters, so it cost them money.

He probably used that email address for something crypto related. That information got hacked or sold, and that's how he ended up receiving this scam email.

I am using this to quote Felicity_Tide also.

It is my main email address, I have not used it for anything that has to do with cryptocurrencies before except using it to open exchange accounts like Binance, OKX, but I do not use it to open some exchange accounts later as I started using another email for that purpose. I also used it for bank accounts email and that is all. Just like I have posted before, Coinomi is not demanding for email, but I think it is just a random email. If they think they have found the right person to scam, they are only wasting their time.

Then that's who probably leaked your email address, one of those exchanges. They may be big names, but even they have data leaks and can't be trusted with anything really.

If they think they have found the right person to scam, they are only wasting their time.
They won't scam an experienced people you, but unfortunately they will someone who is brand new in crypto.

Usually, i put cuss words on that textbox at least, to excite or notify (if using email notification) the scammer about its new victim's details lmao.

Then that's who probably leaked your email address, one of those exchanges. They may be big names, but even they have data leaks and can't be trusted with anything really.
Both exchange users' info were leaked from third party platform breaches, usually those third party responsible for email marketings.

You guys are checking emails? Tongue Lol, I barely check mine. In fact, gmail is the most rarely used app on my device.

Well thank you for sharing this. It seems these things are still in play. Those who are used to crypto space would never fall for such scam, meaning these things are mainly designed for new crypto users, those who just entered. They are the most vulnerable to these techniques, as they lack knowledge on how the whole ownsership of crypto works..

Lastly let us remind the famous quote again, "Not your keys not your coins". No legitimate entity would ask for your seed phrases.. Smiley

If you click on the link on the email, it will take you to your browser to update your seed phrase

Only newbies who does not have knowledge about how privacy closed source is will fall victim to this kind of scam considering the preference of the email.
In the first place it is impossible to log into closed source wallet without inputting the recovery phrase and for you that is sure of maintaining your privacy you will have nothing to worry about when you receive this kind of message.

So they tend to play smart in dragging your attention closely by given the provision to consult the team. Maybe if you have moved forth with the communication they would on their own redirect you on how to get the needed informations just to steal your funds while pretending to be genuine.
And the others asking to update your seed phrase with the entry space key in your current seed phrase should also let you know they are scams with the terminology to hack into your wallet to steal your funds.

I just hope newbies learn from this kind of scam because it is very possible that there will be them that will fall victim with this if they are at the target.

This is the logic they operate on, for every 100,000 one hundred thousand emails there is always a 10 people, mostly old men or women who owns some crypto in that wallet who is ignorant and will fall victim of this scam so they keep using the trick even though it is old. However most of use here are aware of this kind of scam so I’m sure even the scammers have not target on people with better knowledge they only spread it mass and hope it returns back.

The most funny thing I saw today is updating recovery phrase. It's like scammer pretending like bank officer call customer to get their card details. The most important thing in a wallet is recovery phrase which can never be updated.

These scammers think that their targets don't know how their wallet works, how uninformed they believe people are is what keeps on amusing me, but some may actually fall for this type of scam because of the fear of the message body they might rush to input their seed phrase on that empty box.

This type cant get to me but what I could have avoided is clicking on the link like the op did especially on a device where I have my wallets connected as I can't tell what length clicking on that link can go and access things on my device without me granting it access.

Exactly. I'm beginning to think that scammers are running out of ideas to be creative so they opt for shabby patterns and hope someone unsuspecting falls for it.
I mean why would they bother with creativity in the first place? Unless you have a dedicated target that you know for sure own a billion $ in crypto, you wouldn't spend a ton of time and money trying to make your scams looks legit, especially with AI these days. They always target users with a lack of knowledge, awareness, and so on. Even if they send some emails to a experienced users they know 99.9% of the time their attempt would go nowhere. That 1% or something is where they made money from.
I don't see this has they running out of idea's because some of these scams style are being updated to work better and the reason you might consider a scam not to be innovative is because it's very much effective.  That means scammers are still making really good amount of money for them not to see a reason to update their means of scam.

No kne should consider scammers as individuals lacking creativity, the don't lack and they are often good with innovative skills.

This happens for most wallets and they'll label that they are that wallet. So, expect that there will be more from these scammers and they'll change into another wallet. So these update scams are just going to cycle their tactics from using your email to send you with another attempt of scamming and hacking you. Once they have your email, they'll continue to send that but with another name of wallet.

If you click on the link on the email, it will take you to your browser to update your seed phrase

I stopped because I know if I put my seed phrase there, the scammers will see it and they will steal all my coins.

This scam is very old already, I do not think people should not know about it by now, but for the sake of our new members, I post this so that they can learn and know about this scam.
To be honest, I even won't bother to click on such links. Once I receive any emails from a non-custodial wallet, I just delete them and mark them as spam as well sometimes. Also, if there is an option for unsubscribing, then I do unsubscribe as well. Because I think it's even risky to click on an unknown link, and it would download malware as well on my device. In case of updates or anything else I need, just browse their official website.

However, it's a common scam nowadays, but still newbies would fall into that. Because newbies are pretty much greedy, and they don't even have proper knowledge about how crypto and wallet systems work. Any legit non-custodial wallet won't ask for a recovery seed phrase through online links or through their website as well. Just need to have proper knowledge to avoid such scams.

As what I know those legitimate non-custodial wallets will not ask the important details of their users. That's why if they have seen an email like that, better for those people to be suspicious and try to ignore it. This is the safest route they could do, since if they choose to click it, their curiosity will put them on danger.

If there's unsubscribe option on email or for them not to receive any future updates better do it, because that kind of mails will not bring anything good to them. Proper education or having knowledge towards those kind of attempt is their real protection. So better be knowledgeable to avoid committing costly mistakes.

I don't trust these centralized platforms. There might be data leaks caused hacks or compromised staff, yet they will not inform customers. Some fraudulent employees might even sell users data to these criminals. I am just surprised how these scammers know that you are using Coinomi wallet even when they don't have any of your personal information. Maybe like you said, its a random email.

I assume you're responding to the quoted post in my post instead of my reply. I'm not sure if I'll call scammers creative or not creative, since they're not a singular entity and some groups behave differently to begin with.

I more or less agree with the point that if their current trick work it's unlikely they'll change it significantly. Another point is I believe most of them know 90% of recipients won't get tricked, so there's no need to spend a money to make every single email personalized.

That's not even coinomi official email address, there is someone impersonating them but that's not even a problem, the problem is people choosing to trust anyone asking them for their recovery seed.

This is not a new trick, I have lost count of how many times I've gotten similar emails from Ledger and others, including this coinomi, it doesn't matter and that's what customers need to understand.

Even your very own crypto wallet company has no right to ask you for your recovery seed, if you give it up this easily it means you don't understand what you are doing, no one has the right to ask you for your recovery seed.

Not your government, not your president, not even Nakamoto himself.

Knowing that scam is real and can be coming in any direction as long as the scammer have a target they are aiming at, I don't expect to receive a mail from a service or app and not subscribed to and this is one of the easiest way to identify any attempt to scam us, you can't mail me about coinomi wallet when I know that I don't have it, I would have already sensed it is come attempt because they sent mails to random users they have on their list.

It's an outdated scamming technique regular crypto users may not fall for this scam but for newbie it's still a powerful scamming technic. Although it's old technic we could say it's a good reminder for newbie. It would be more helpful if you add some details about how newbe could avoid it.
It could be old technic, but it's still a new thing for newbies to the cryptocurrency space who are trying so hard to learn and do everything right to avoid such kind of scams. I
Did you not read everything he said? He also added that newbies can be vulnerable to the attack. Another is that you said newbies that are trying so hard to learn and do everything right to avoid such kind of scams, learning how to avoid crypto scam will take not more than 2 or 3 days to read about.

Knowing that scam is real and can be coming in any direction as long as the scammer have a target they are aiming at
Some scammers may not target someone specifically but randomly target many people that they may not even know while some scammers can target someone.

When I saw this email just some minutes ago, I know it was a scam because I do not expect any team from a noncustodial wallet to send me any email, but scammers did it.

When I noticed the difference between open source wallets and close source wallets few years ago, I stopped using Coinomi as they moved from open source to close source and this has been more than 4 years ago that I have not been using the wallet, but I saw scammers sent me an email today about the wallet.

This is the email:

If you click on the link on the email, it will take you to your browser to update your seed phrase

I stopped because I know if I put my seed phrase there, the scammers will see it and they will steal all my coins.

This scam is very old already, I do not think people should not know about it by now, but for the sake of our new members, I post this so that they can learn and know about this scam.
This is very educative and it would be really helpful to many who are new to the forum and need knowledge on possible scam schemes on their wallet. Many people here on the forum might not know this and it is well appreciated that you share your experiences here on the forum to avoid repeated occurrences.

This is a very tricky strategy that many would eventually fall for, because the level of scam technique keeps getting better as the days go by and the less we feel concerned about security it becomes an issue of regrets in the future. It is important that as much as we are trying to learn more about investment, we should also incorporate learning on security to secure our assets too.

You guys are checking emails? Tongue Lol, I barely check mine. In fact, gmail is the most rarely used app on my device.
I guess you are one of the lucky ones who can go about your day without checking your email every once in a while.  Tongue

Having said that, I don't mix the email address I use for crypto related stuff with anything else (as I see that OP used same email for exchanges and banking, which is not good practice imho).
