I havent lost bitcoins, but I have lost altcoins due to being careless. I have sent several times altcoin to unsupported networks and wrong addresses. Only once I had this situation solved after months, when exchange finally added network I needed. Rest of the cases - altcoins are still on the addresses untouched for years. With Bitcoin I have only lost its dollar equivalent when I sent it with low transaction fee, fees went up and I waited for weeks to have transaction confirmed.

Yup, was sending from my cold wallet to my hot wallet.
Big red text that I put in the hot wallet to remind myself about one address.

DO NOT USE THIS ADDRESS

But I clicked on it anyway and sent BTC to an address that getting the PK for would take more time and effort then it was worth.
Even now it's still only worth about $150 when I sent it, it was $50. Going to cost more to get to the PK. Long story, I know where it is and how to get it but it involves dealing with people I had a falling out with.

Bang head on desk.

I have never lost Bitcoin due to negligence because I know that when I send Bitcoin to the wrong address, the error will result in the money being permanently forfeited because in Bitcoin there is no Customer Service and refunds. I always think of every click of "Send" as sending cash to someone that can't be resent, once sent it's done. So it's better to waste 15 seconds to double-check the destination address because it can eliminate years of regret.

What are you most conscious about before clicking the 'pay' button?
Bitcoin addresses are long, it is impossible to memorize them all, let alone random combinations, so I always check the First 3 Letters + Last 3 Letters, usually 90% of malware is caught if this check is done, for example bc1qxxxx..x9f3 must be exactly the same. Instead of copy-pasting, I also often rely on QR Scanning when meeting the recipient in person, the reason I do this is because malware cannot replace the QR on the PC or smartphone screen.

There are some exchanges now that will request users to please confirm and re-confirm information especially the addresses, and I don’t think I’ve had any such problems of losing BTC through sending to wrong address because I’m always careful with my address just the same way I never made mistake with my local fiat account number. I’ve once made lose BTC as a result of not backing up my email address where by I couldn’t have access to my email account and password, I eventually ended up misplacing my phone in the process and lost everything entirely but that was some years back.

I remembered this incident because sometimes, I do not cross-check addresses when I send small funds. Have you lost some bitcoins because of carelessness?
What are you most conscious about before clicking the 'pay' button?
On a few occasions I've made some mistakes that almost cost me my bitcoins but I later had to figure it out before it was too late. One thing about the crypto space is that anything you do shouldn't be in a rush. When you are too busy, in a rush you most likely end up making mistakes. Before you run a transaction be sure you have the right details and not just jumping off to send to an old used address. The recipient might have switched or lost access to that address and you would have to send twice if such mistakes were to happen. Over time we know that many new investors would still make mistakes as they are in avoidable. But everyone learns from their mistakes at some point..

It's possible to lost bitcoin out of carelessness, people i have known have loss their bitcoin out of ignorant...one of my friend has complained to me that he has lost his bitcoin in exchange, by not checked the minimum the exchanges can be deposited in exchanges..so when it deposit a bitcoin in the exchange address, what it deposited was not up to the minimum deposit the exchanges accept...so till now the now the bitcoin has not reflected and exchanges that they can not refund a coin that is not up to the minimum deposit requirements of their platform...

People do make a mistake by depositing in wrong address and also lost their seed phrase, so their's different way you can mistakenly lost your bitcoin, especially the time people have not known bitcoin too well...

Before I click on the pay button, the first thing I do is to always check my wallet address. Because one single mistake can make the transaction go into a wrong address, and since bitcoin transactions can’t be reversed, recovery your funds can become impossible if the address doesn’t belong to the right person.  I don’t do that mistake of copy and paste blindly because malware may have replaced the address that i must have copied without me noticing. That’s why it’s very essential to compare the first few characters and the last few characters of your address and that of the receiver before sending. The last thing I always check is the network. I always make sure that the address and the network matches with the one the receiver expects, because sending your coins through a wrong network can lead to more problems.

Someone needed to send some bitcoins to another person they had a deal with and so asked for their address. The fellow sent an address and he sent the coins. Almost immediately, they sent a chat and was like "Have you sent it?" He responded in the affirmative and they exclaimed "Oh no." Even though they didn't give me details of the problem, I think it could be a wrong address or an inaccessible one.

I remembered this incident because sometimes, I do not cross-check addresses when I send small funds. Have you lost some bitcoins because of carelessness?

What are you most conscious about before clicking the 'pay' button?
The possibility of losing your coin due to such mistakes is really low though it happens at times, it has never happened to me but i know that some people can be a bit careless, personally before i make any bitcoin transactions i ensure am in a relaxed mood so i can properly verify the address before sending, the example you gave is clearly a mistake from the receiver, he should have verified his address before sending it, if you send a wrong address to someone for funding i don’t feel the person will take responsibility for any loss, just ensure that you double check every address properly before transacting so that you won’t lose your coin out of carelessness.

No, I have never made such a careless mistake, and I will always be careful never to make such a mistake. Bitcoin transactions aren't something anyone should carry out without being mindful of every detail. They are also not the kind of transactions to be done under pressure or in haste. I have tried my best to take note of all the lapses that lead people to send their bitcoins to the wrong addresses, and I am really benefiting from my safety consciousness. I do not need to be a victim before I can take precautionary measures to prevent the loss of my coins.

I did many things wrong when I was new to crypto, starting from choosing a bad crypto wallet that result in loss of many Bitcoin and Altcoins combined and also crypto exchange exiting scam on me after I left some coins on the platform.

I was also in rush and I got distracted which leads to loss of some Bitcoin, because I sent it to a address and the person isn't someone I can reach maybe they can send it back, that's when I learn to be in a relax state if you want to make transfer of Bitcoin or others.

Always be in a calm state before approving any transactions on your wallet, I've lost handful amount to free wallet too, a old custodial wallet where you have no access to your recovery seed, just a email and password signing.

I'm grateful I've never had a problem with sending the wrong funds or making other careless mistakes while transacting in crypto. Because when I first started learning about crypto, I was introduced to the risks involved, especially since I'm on this forum, which has made me more cautious and always double-check addresses before making transactions. Furthermore, in this forum we often hear advice in the crypto world that even the smallest mistake can have immediate, fatal consequences and that sent assets are usually irreversible. This is very different from bank transfers which can be recovered or tracked by the bank, but on the blockchain once you send you're done because there's no undo button.

Crypto does offer extraordinary financial freedom for the future but that freedom comes with full responsibility. In crypto there's no 24-hour customer service to refund your funds, unless the recipient happens to be a kind person and returns them, which is extremely rare. So, being careful isn't an option, it's a necessity.

This is a serious problem, once a transaction is made, it can never be undone. It happens all the time that many people send their Bitcoin to the wrong address. I don't remember the last time this happened to me, but I have also had such an incident where I sent Bitcoin to the wrong address.

During Bitcoin transactions, you should definitely check your wallet multiple times and then make sure before making a Bitcoin transaction. No matter how small the amount is, it should be taken care of because Bitcoin is Bitcoin and it definitely has enough value, so if you transact it carelessly, there will definitely be a risk. Because it is completely under your control, once a transaction is made, it is completely lost.

I think it could be a wrong address or an inaccessible one.
It is probably an address that the recipient doesn't control the private keys and so does not belong to them. Take note that if you make a mistake in one of the characters of a BTC address, it becomes an invalid address and your wallet would flag it. You would be unable to fund such an address.

It is important to cross-check your destination address to ensure you aren't sending funds to the wrong party, or that your clipboard has not be hijacked. If you also copy addresses from your wallets tx history, then you are also at risk of falling for address poisoning scams.

What are you most conscious about before clicking the 'pay' button?
This is a typical experience of most newbies and OGs that have started their Bitcoin journey and have some few transactions in their hands, I have personally lost some amount in Bitcoin to wrong address usage.

Most of the time we are either victims of abandoned Bitcoin address reuse or a victim of clickbord malware that trick you into sending money to a scammers address instead your copied address.

I doubt I have ever lost my coins to wrong address or something of that nature because I try to be extra cautious. The only time I remember losing some funds was when Eloncoin was a thing and where the mix up happened was when they had to upgrade and asked users to follow suit. Till date I didn't know what happened because I never saw the funds nor have access to it again.

Risk management practices helps a Bitcoiner practice some basic tips before sending coins with an address and that's to recheck and double check the address mostly being familiar with your first four letters and last four letters of your address could be helpful, because we know some addresses could be saved on our clipboard and trying to paste most times could paste a wrong address.

Carelessness is a big threat because once a coin is lost it is lost, there is no customer support or office to run to for assistance in recovery, so it's better to be extra cautious before sending coins than to be sorry after making a wrong transaction.

I have not lost Bitcoin to anyone, but I know this happens, and is mostly common among newbies. People do loose their bitcoin asset because of inexperience. A novis in Bitcoin investing once told me he mistakingly sent Bitcoin to a wrong address, now instead of copying the bitcoin address, and pasting it in the appropriate place, he used pen to write down the bitcoin address, he made a mistake in the process of writing down the Bitcoin address, and when he eventually sent the bitcoin , he sent the bitcoin to the wrong address. But besides, you need good security to keep your bitcoin protected, and prevent your bitcoin from missing. It is possible that someone can transfer your Bitcoin to another wallet address if you compromise the security of your bitcoin wallet.

Fortunately, no.

I used to check the address' receiver before doing it and not just once but several times before doing it. Because in my opinion, that's the right thing to do before doing a transaction.

We're quite scared of making a wrong transaction due to the clipboard malware that changes the address that we copy and that's why it's important to do it as a protocol.

Such things are really very complicated (especially for newbies), and I really always recommend to double-check before proceeding any payment on any address, and if you are the one who is sending an address to get paid, then you should double-check your address so that you can get paid without any inconvenience or problem. Well, the answer to your question is that I have never lost any bitcoin in this way, but I also have my early days story which is relatable to this matter, haha.

Once I received CRP from a campaign on BTT in their supported app and i wanted to sent that amount to binance so that i can convert that amount in fiate. Due to a little mistake i lost all amount. Then i contact to the team of that app from where i sent my amount which was lost in the hope they will help me to recover my amount but they did not help me regarding this matter. That is why it is always best to keep checking double before seding it to the next.

The funny thing is, I have zero problems with "careless" BTC transactions, but I have had some experiences with "careless" bank transfers. It happened because my real name is a common name, so people carelessly sent the money without even reading the full name displayed on the screen.

Another experience I had was because the admin of a website whose service I used wrongly copy-pasted my bank account number with someone else's. I needed to contact the owner of that bank account number and ask for a refund Grin

What are you most conscious about before clicking the 'pay' button?

Just make sure you transfer a small amount of BTC first before sending the full amount.
I also make sure by pressing CTRL+F to find my address. If it's highlighted correctly, then it's all good.

BTW, related experiences...

Many people have reported experiencing the same situation as you mentioned.

In other cases, some people and institutions sent BTC by mistake to a valid address, which means the recipient received BTC by accident.

I hope I will never have such bad experiences.

I haven't made such a mistake before, and I don't think I will make it because anything that regards money, I always take my time in doing it, not to be in a rush to do it because it will pain me if I should send Bitcoin to the wrong address due to my negligence of not cross-checking the Bitcoin address before tapping send.

In fact, how will I even explain it, that the fault is on my own side? You know, there are things you would do, your explanation won't be considered, instead, you would like to think of a means to send the Bitcoin to the address given to you because it's not the person's business that you send the Bitcoin to the wrong address. However, the person has to do the needful because it is not the receiver's fault
