That's the work of gambling addiction, it means your friend has soaked with addiction. His addiction has has passed the level 1 stage. A Gambler that is capable of selling his property to gamble, to me has Just crossed the line which means he need attention.

I have always advive those who don't have a source of income to fix the problem first before they turn into a gambler, but I don't even know that someone who is already making good amount of money can get this addicted to gambling.

No one should think gambling can become a source of income, I understand that when someone don't have a job and got family to feed will try anything in their power to get them fed but trying with the luck is not really the best way. You can even try some hard labor jobs and get just a few dollar to get them a meal today is better decision than turning towards gambling to solve the financial problem.

The problem is that we are not satisfied with whatever we have and we want to copy or use the means which someone use in growing forgetting that our destiny's are not the same, seeing your friend making it from gambling does not mean that you will also make it from gambling, that is what a lot of incoming gamblers fails to understand. Yay another thread about addiction!!! Self control is what most people lack, I think most people like to gamble a little, they just aren't good at it. Bottom line, if you have an addictive personality, why try to gamble? You're just gonna lose everything as you won't know when to quit. If you say he was financially okay before this unfortunate incident befell him, then it was his greed for more money that made him lose so much, to the extent of selling his properties. Gambling addiction doesn't choose who gets addicted, rich, poor, old, young, men or women, all of them can get addicted. Even if you are only doing it for entertainment, a casual gambler, or just gambling once in a while, there is still a chance that you can get addicted.
