I don't agree with your colleague, OP. Investment for me is not like this; investing for me is putting your money where you expect real value over time, like a business or an asset that produces something along the way..
As I believe (others too) Gambling always built to favor the house, so the longer you play, the more you lose on average.
As much as gambling has made a lot of people who gamble wisely millionaires and billionaires, I still do not consider it to be investment. Gambling is gambling and investment is investment. Investment will definitely give you enough time to get back whatever funds utilised but gambling? All of your staking power will be gone in a flash and there's absolutely, nothing you can do to get back the money unlike properly dome investments. You make so much sense from your statement, but there is quite some difference between gambling and investment, but we shouldn’t neglect the fact that some people who gamble puts a lot of efforts into gambling, because some of this people who gamble have to study some certain types of numbers to make predictions, and checking of previous statistics, you can’t totally neglect their efforts as well, which I think gambling would just be gambling, even after doing all that, there is no guarantee winning while gambling, I think the best way to approach gambling is just seeing it as entertainment and having fun. Talking about investment, you can’t compare investment with gambling it’s totally different things entirely, when making investments I think you have some sort of guarantee if you do the right things with your investment, there is definitely some percentage of guarantee when you make a physical investment like putting your money into something that has value, and it actually depends on what type of investment you put your money into, Ponzi scheme which is more like a get rich quick is different from proper investment. Entertainment is the right framing. Studying odds or stats still does not make it investment, house edge is still there. I gamble only with extra money for fun; investing for me is still holding something like Bitcoin over time. Only small disagree = investment also no real guarantee for me, Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrencies or not crypto market can dump hard too, but at least you still own the asset after, unlike a lost bet.

I wish to disagree with you on your statement saying both a Gambler and an Investor are the same. Saying they can be both irrational and addictive and lunatic. I would hardly compare an investor with a gambler for whatever reasons because I still see them in different light. Gambling is something you do for fun, it is not supposed to be done for just financial gains rather than for fun and enjoyment then the reward which comes with it which is where the money comes in. As for investment, it is a different thing entirely. It is when you safeguard your money for the future, it can be in few months or even several years depending on how mature you have capped your investments to be.
It seems to me that the author of the post confused investors with traders, because investors don’t have any of that gambling spirit; they simply invest money and then wait for a very long time without taking any action. And traders, especially short‑term ones or scalpers, are often almost indistinguishable from gamblers, since both want quick opportunities to make money. Scalpers make quick trades based on their abstract thinking as traders, and in essence, this can be compared to the dopamine spikes a gambler experiences when they play slots or constantly roll the ball on roulette.

I wouldn’t even compare traders to gamblers, because a trader - if they’re not trading in some kind of options but are trading exclusively on the spot - knows how to manage their trading position, whereas in gambling you won’t find a single game where you can manage your position. Unless, of course, you count poker. So, trading is much more reliable than poker, and I believe it doesn’t attract the kind of reckless people who are found in all types of gambling. Overall, I believe it’s somewhat inaccurate to compare traders to gamblers, let alone investors.

The linguistic differences between investors and traders also exist in terms of operational differences. A long-term investor will be able to balance himself with the market situation in a way that is not easy for traders. Their objective differences with the market situation may make or break them. Long term investors always reap the fruits of their actions and their patience, but a trader likes to make decisions very quickly and the only objective is to make a profit. They often make mistakes in their decisions, just like gamblers and suffer the consequences of their impatience.

Gambling is an investment. If you are not a gambler you won't know this until you start gambling. And also in gambling, we have long term investment and short time investments. It can be referred to as long term when you play the games, extending it to stay for some weeks or months before they will finish playing all of them, on the other hand, short term gambling is one that you have to bet on only the games they are playing for that day or the next day without the games being extended more than two or three days.
Gamblers will be able to relate more to this. People who gamble see it as an investment because it is an investment, the same way you expect money in return in trading is how you also expect money in return in gambling. The same way you can lose your money bin gambling, that's same way you are liable to lose in trading too that's why people say they are almost alike in their modus Operandi.

Have a colleague at work place who keeps saying that gambling is also investment that in gambling whatever amount you use to gamble can actually yield back the results, he emphasize on that if you are gambling you should do the best to use a better amount to place your bet so that if you win then you gonna have good pay out.
On this statement, having a positive mindset from his statement is what's working for him, but taking it on a neutral ground, he forgot that using large sum of money for gambling is as equal to risking that same amount on something that has no assurance of positive returns, when it's lost, it's gone. I paused a bit, while something was ringing in my head that if this dude was joking or if he truly understand what Gambling is. Of course I didn't agreed with him because I know gambling is never investment but a game of entertainment and having fun. Whatever above this is never regarded as an investment rather being too open to be deceived.
There could be a strong sense of seriousness in what he is saying, and what gives him such beliefs is that he must have made wins on different occasions, that's what makes him feel it could work the same for others if he shares the idea, but this idea is 100% successful in our wildest imaginations. In other hands, investment is different from gambling, let say if uses specific amount to buy Bitcoin worth of 100$ and if market drops the investment decreases by dollar equivalent but the fractions of my Bitcoin remains the same till the market took back its place or even move above expected price and I could likely sell to have my profit whereas, I can also hold for longer time as I wishes. But on the contrary, if you uses same amount to gamble when you lose it there is no way to get it back and there is no possibility of winning, in fact the chances are 50/50 base.
Is he right from what you think?
There is no chances whereby gambling and investment can be said to be similar or called the same. They are in all ways opposite to each other. Not everyone can win their gambling games, but it is very possible for everyone who takes investment decisions on the right asset to make profit over a considerable period of time.

I respect other people's perspective. However, I still can't understand the part of investment in gambling, whether for a short term or a long term. What I know, gambling tends to spend money because we more lose money than earning money in any gambling game. Gamblers will be able to relate more to this. People who gamble see it as an investment because it is an investment, the same way you expect money in return in trading is how you also expect money in return in gambling. I'm not sure that all gamblers think the same way. There must be also the gamblers who think it isn't a kind of investment. TBH, I rarely hear that gamblers claim gambling is the way of investment. Some of them mostly say gambling for fun. Meanwhile for some serious gamblers, they may claim gambling is a way for earning money.

I think that most of the people who see gambling as investment are those who see gambling as their source of income and not a fun. There are folks who believe they're good at gambling and see it as their source of income and in that case, it's an investment for them. However, in the actual sense, gambling is not an investment because investment is known to have a higher chances of being productive, as in, investment is a longer term exercise where a person intentionally saves for the future based on knowledge and understanding whereas gambling takes a shorter duration and less reliable because it is based on luck. Gambling has higher chances of loosing your part or entire money and even though nothing is certain anywhere, but gambling is more risky than investment.

Gambling remains gambling and there’s no way you will twist the narrative to make people believe that gambling is an investment. I’m a gambler and I’ve seen the difference between gambling and investment. Even if you may assume something like long term gambling which i doubt if something of such nature exists in gambling. It’s only in investment you can talk of long term and anything other than that is a gamble, for example those traders who trade for short term gains what they’re doing is gambling with their investment. Even if you gamble for long term, it does not move in a sustainable direction because the loses are more guaranteed than winning over time.

No offense, but I think only people who are addicted to gambling or don't have much basic financial knowledge would think gambling is also investing. If you don't understand the difference between the two, go back and read some of the previous comment. I think people have already explained it pretty clearly. Just because both gambling and investing can make you lose money does not mean they are the same thing. Risk is the only thing they have in common. How you make money, what you're actually putting your money into, and what determines your returns are all different.

Gambling can be considered an investment if you are running a casino or you are managing a casino for someone and you are getting big paycheck for doing so, but if what you are saying is been a gambler qualified as investment that's a wting thought because gambling is not even close to an investment, gambling is a game of luck that doesn't require you to invest in any products or assets, so what are you investing into here? Nothing, you are only fueling addiction not investing.

You are probably a newbie and are criticizing too much because you have lost money through trading. In fact, many people are making profits from trading. Many experienced traders make profits even in bear markets. There is risk in gambling and there is a high possibility of losing money there, but a patient and experienced trader does not use his funds like gambling. Gambling and trading are almost at the same level in terms of risk. Patient traders always use stop lose and can maintain their holdings for a long time without losing if they want. The risk of gamblers in gambling is 100%. Most of the time gamblers aim to win but they lose most of the time.

The main difference is that trading let you use analysis and risk management, while gambling relies more on luck. But that does not mean trading is auto less risky. Almost nobody makes money from gambling. But the percentage of trader who actually stay profitable is pretty damn low too. A lot of studies suggest only around 3 - 5% can remain profitable in the long run. So trading is not pure gambling, but I don't think it's wrong to call it a variation of gambling, especially with day trading.

We all have different experiences from gambling. If you are one of those who consistently make profits from gambling, either through luck or your irresistible skills, then let's assume that you are seeing an investment with gambling.
What you just pointed is one of the problems facing developing and undeveloped countries, that is citizens saying otherwise or telling lies or supporting something that's not supposed to be(ills) just because they're being favored. Even if you are always at profit as a gambler, that doesn't make gambling an investment. Gambling as investment is true for the gambling companies and her partners. But these can't be for gamblers. So our experience has nothing to do with this at all because an individual taking gambling as investment doesn't make gambling an investment on a general ground.

Sorry but what kind of nonsense is that? Gambling is only an investment when you run a casino or you invest in a bankroll, it's not an investment when you gamble with your money, especially when you know that games have house edge and casino has every mathematical advantage over you. You are basically, mathematically, losing money every time you place a bet and how can you call that an investment? Gambling is a form of entertainment, not a form of investment and no one can convince me otherwise.

Haha honestly I also want to laugh reading the post from the person you replied to that bro, how can we possibly say that gambling is an investment, an activity that depends entirely on luck that can never be categorized as an investment, the only thing that makes sense is as you said that is when we put money in a casino with a record of cooperation with the bookie on a profit sharing agreement within a certain period of time, it does not mean you play like a gambler in general.

I guess you don’t fully understand what an investment is for you to say this. I won’t dispute the fact that there are so many persons that has profited through gambling but not because of any perfect strategy or any skill but because it was simply luck. Gambling has a very uncertain outcome and on the long run being consistent with it can make you lose all what you have, become irresponsible or even end up with regrets because you chose to use it as an investment. Meanwhile investment actually can appreciate overtime when being consistent and held for a long time, that is safeguarding the future for you, which actually makes this two entirely different.

I think that most of the people who see gambling as investment are those who see gambling as their source of income and not a fun. There are folks who believe they're good at gambling and see it as their source of income and in that case, it's an investment for them.
Indeed. Those gamblers who assume it is a kind of investment, they should have the mindset that gambling is a place to gain an income (not for fun/entertainment). However, I don't see it is the right mindset. Almost all people who assume gambling in that way, they will gamble in an excessive way. Then, they experience severe losses because they try too hard to win the prizes. However, in the actual sense, gambling is not an investment because investment is known to have a higher chances of being productive, as in, investment is a longer term exercise where a person intentionally saves for the future based on knowledge and understanding whereas gambling takes a shorter duration and less reliable because it is based on luck.
True. Investment will never be similar as gambling. In investment, people rely on their knowledge and skills. Meanwhile in gambling, people rely on the luck factor. So, they are actually quite different if we consider the key factors to succeed in them. Sure, gambling is about short goal and investment should be for a long term. Gambling has higher chances of loosing your part or entire money and even though nothing is certain anywhere, but gambling is more risky than investment.
In gambling, we tend to lose money only. It is quite different with investment, some investment can be called quite safe and not so difficult to gain profits as long as we can hold it for a long time.

If they gamble every day and rely on it to make money, then it’s more like a job than an investment. Because at the end of the day, they don't actually own anything. But either way, that’s still a wrong way to look at it. However, in the actual sense, gambling is not an investment because investment is known to have a higher chances of being productive, as in, investment is a longer term exercise where a person intentionally saves for the future based on knowledge and understanding whereas gambling takes a shorter duration and less reliable because it is based on luck. Gambling definitely isn't investing, but Im a bit doubtful about saying that investing has a higher chance of making money. Not every investment is gonna make money. You can still lose money, even your entire capital, if you pick the wrong asset or get timing wrong. I think the main difference between 2 isnt really the chance of making profits but how the profit is generated.

I really don't understand how something where you lose most of the time, the risk is much higher than the potential, it depends on luck and in reality you lose 90% of the time, and most importantly, where we have no control, how can it be an investment? Gambling can never be an investment. Losing is the main reality in these, winning is very rare. Someone can win in the short term, but if you turn it into an investment and start playing here with everything you have for big success, then it can bring you a lot of losses. In fact, gambling has destroyed most of the people who considered gambling as an investment and were excessively involved in gambling.
