Well, people are lazy. That is why we see their trust in exchanges and the storage of their funds on exchanges. Similarly, all cloud storage seems to have been invented for the security of user data, but this is just another convenience that turns people into those who can be managed. You are promised to save everything, calculate everything, and do everything for you. And yes, people are used to convenience. We are unknowingly turning into those who allow machines to control people. Newbies are the first victims of comfort civilization. But bitcoin carried a completely different idea. Be independent in everything. And those who do not want to grow up, study, and trust only themselves, let them learn from their sometimes sad experiences.

Convenience is the enemy of vigilance.

And without vigilance, we are our own enemy. Lost/stolen passwords, seeds, valuables, money and so on are the direct result of becoming too comfortable, too sloppy and too darn convenient.

But then again, people are not robots, we do not want to work. We know we have to, otherwise the consequences will catch up to us in a most negative fashion...

We have to hold ourselve vigilant.

He must not use the cloud storage to keep his recovery seed but keep by himself. No need to rely on that services even they are popular in the cloud storage and offers many things. That is for your safety so nothing bad happens to you so you don't have to worry.

You must keep the secret of all things related to Bitcoin and not use other services even they say they can protect and guarantee. You can protect by yourself so no one can forcing you to use their services.
We are living in an era where people don't want to take responsibility. The mentality that AI can do all things is making people lazy. They value convenience more than safety. I am amazed that the OP's friend trusts a third party because they are big companies. They should be aware that many well-known crypto companies have gone bankrupt or scammed users. The case of FTX is still fresh in my memory.

There is no safe alternative to self-custody.  Giving your seed phrase or recovery phrase to an intermediary might seem convenient, but they should be willing to face the consequences if issues arise.

Being lazy is an option and what we mostly like doing these days since we have AI to make our daily works easier, but do you feel lazy to protect your investment? This is a big question to anyone that wants to invest in Bitcoin, they need to take every responsibility of keeping their Bitcoin safe and being lazy to use any third party platform or exchanges to hold their Bitcoin is not something they should do, and considering to leave it in an exchange if they don’t have knowledge can be accepted for a while because I will expect every serious investors to do their research before investing, and if they truly do the research, they will finds out that exchanges are just like market place to trade, while wallets are the main place we hold our coins.

An investor’s needs to learn how to keep their seed phrase safe in order to avoid losing their investment, keeping the seed phrase offline is far better than allowing it in a device that have internet connection. Not your keys, not your Bitcoin, we should always remember this.

Still doesn't make any sense, why isn't other crypto wallets showing the same thing? Is Trust wallet and Robinhood wallet working with Google? Just because Google drive is preinstall on all android devices doesn't mean they should be showing up in a non-custodial wallet.

If the crypto wallet isn't supportive of this idea the Google drive as backup wouldn't show this way, it's not an option that pops up on screen this shows as something the wallet itself supports.

It's misleading many beginners who have not done alot of research on crypto wallets before, they will think that it's a normal thing to keep their recovery seed this way.

You claimed that Trust wallet had this too, Google drive was existing since Android 2.0, there was never trust wallet then, when Trust wallet came, for like two years they don't have that stupid Google drive option popping up on their wallet, it was after several updates.
The first point of failure is that the Robinson wallet is closed source of which you should never trust in the first place. same as Trust wallet and they are not safe options. A good wallet would not even allow you take screenshots of your seed phrase, not to mention giving options for cloud backups. Another thing is to ensure the wallet he is using isn't a compromised version, you know originals and fake look alike.

Start from advising your friend on a good choice of wallet, being big is no excuse to trust, in the past, big exchanges were hacked and funds were lost, he better chooses good options like Electrum or Blue wallet and back up his seed phrases manually and offline.

Cloud storage is a wrong place for your recovery seed, do not be misleaded by centralised crypto companies who are acting like they know what's best for everyone.

Big or not, when a wallet begins to offer you options of storing your seed on cloud storage, it is already a red flag.

It shouldn't be a matter of how big the wallet is or was, we have seen many like that getting compromised technically because of little complicated features like this which was implemented trying to ease the storage of crypto keys.

It was good you brought the dangers of storing his keys on the cloud to him. Alot would have gone wrong and then he would come crying to you how he lost his coins. Cloud storage is a big no, to anyone that's really ready to be involved in the crypto investment.

Security and privacy are very important and we can maintain good practice for security and privacy while we don't have to lose our convenience or sacrifice convenience. When people are under value importance of security and privacy, they will see it's very inconvenient when doing necessary steps for keeping good security and privacy. In contrast, if people realize importance of security and privacy, they will do necessary steps for their practice quite comfortably, and by this practice and purposes they want to achieve, they no longer see it as inconvenient.

Difference is people's mindset on security, privacy, their importance so that they will have different practice and different feelings when doing steps for better security and privacy.

Like Lopp recommended, start with something, a first step, then improving it with more steps over time, you will feel comfortably when doing this.
Modest privacy protection proposal.
Security and privacy advice.

Beginners need to realize the dangers so they can avoid unwanted problems in the future. The target is clearly not people who have been familiar with crypto for a long time. Beginners who are just starting to invest will be the most vulnerable to becoming victims. Maybe they call it innovation, but we can see it as a bad scheme.

The only problem with this is that no matter how many times we tell some people around us to never touch or give their credentials or seed to this people, they still end up being the victim at the end of the day, maybe we need to show them pictures and videos also , so that they have all the guide in the world.
Schemes are being recycle if they wont work for people they try to change or tweak it a bit until they have the community to be the victim, so please before doing things that would do harm in your funds or wallet, read , watch , and ask people who are already been through a lot.

Wallet security is an individual responsibility, knowing fully well how risky it is o connect our wallet or it backup phrase online, this is just the basic approach to privacy and security of your wallet/assets in the wallet.

Google doc and other cloud storage that people use for conveniences comes with a lot of vulnerabilities, better you keep your wallet offline and also store your seed phrase manually offline.

Only those that don’t value their asset will save their recovery phrase in cloud storage or those that don’t understand how security works in this space . Securing your asset should be among your top , if not your top priority cause when you lose your asset due to carelessness is gone forever , that’s how things work in this space cause is not a friendly you have to equipped yourself with the right knowledge in order to survive this space , if not you will just keep being victim of different circumstances.
Those who are ignorant and naive would also most likely do the same too. Sometimes people become too lazy to manually write out their phrases and so they decide to either screenshot it (for wallets that supports it) or just take another of their device and take a picture of it and just leave it lying around their device, and some would even feel like backing it up on the cloud space would be the best for them, how ignorant people can really be.

Cloud storage is a wrong place for your recovery seed, do not be misleaded by centralised crypto companies who are acting like they know what's best for everyone.

Manual storage of your seed phrase is the best, and it should be in reputable wallets that are open-source wallets, not centralized platforms that disguise themselves as a wallet. They can be a closed-source wallet, and even if they are an open-source wallet, being centralized is a red flag; therefore, investing in the platform is risky because even if you have your seed phrase backed up manually, you might not be in control of the bitcoin.

Using reputable wallets for our bitcoin investment is the best so that we can have full control of our assets; trusting any platform is not advised, the same as leaving our crypto savings in centralized exchanges.

Talking about laziness, I have literally seen people taking screenshots of their seed phrases and keeping them in the gallery of their mobile phones, and it's mostly because of a lack of knowledge, I would say. Such people don't realize the importance of a seed phrase, they believe this is just another random thing they need when they are logging into their account sometime in the future, so they just need to save it so they can use it from there, they don't understand that anyone who sees that or gets access to it can actually access their funds and steal them. This is why we often say that knowledge is the first thing a person needs when they get into financial markets.

These wallet platforms providing the option for saving their seed phrases in cloud are basically making things worse for newbies by providing them with this much convenience, because as you said, some people just want convenience, and for that, they will compromise on their privacy and the safety of their important data, this is why any person who decides to use this option will think that it's more convenient than saving the seed phrase somewhere else because they can easily access the cloud and it will be safe there, but the platforms know everything, and they still do it.

It was popular and possible in the past to make screenshot of your wallet seed phrase but in latest years, with scams reported and developments of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency wallets, making screenshot is no longer allowed by "good" wallets. If people want, they must use their phone or camera to take a photo of their wallet seed phrase. Because they are no longer allowed to take a screenshot of wallet seed phrase directly on either their phone or computer.

It's their proactive security protection for users, so if people as users still want to bypass it with phone or camera, it's user responsibility by doing wrong practice.

It is true that backing up seed phrase in cloud storage is a bad move because cloud storage backup isn't safe. Although the seed phrase is encrypted when backed up through the cloud and no one can access it without a password, according to their information neither Wallet nor Google can access seed phrase without a password.  Even then I do not believe what they say and I think it is a bit of a stretch through which the entire fund can be lost.

Robinhood is now allowing recovery seed backup into their cloud he said, and when I checked I got angry 💢.
It's not even Robinhood owns cloud service.

I had to lecture this guy to never give in to any cloud storage backups, even if Robinhood own the cloud storage this is wrong.
To confuse him I had to tell him about what happened to me in the past storing recovery seed in a cloud account.

He was willing to take the risk simply because it is Robinhood, they are big he said again, but there is no such thing as been big when it comes to your recovery seed I told him, I think this will probably safe one or two beginners on here too.
This is becoming a trend, and it's more reason for us to know that these companies don't care about us but themselves. As if centralised systems have not caused their damage enough, now, those so-called decentralised parts are now being made weak, which is unacceptable.

I've not heard any reports of thefts through this arrangement, but technically, it's wrong, as it makes the theft technically more possible. The only reason why I don't see this as a high immediate threat for your friend is that it is not being stored in Robinhood's server, but the Google cloud in your friend's device. It would have been worse if it were to be Robinhood's server.

Thanks for your reply, I believe that every could storages are all online, right? So it doesn't even matter if he saved the recovery seed in his devices Google cloud or drive, it is still a very unsafe practice.

I don't just like how few popular crypto companies are making it to look like a safer solution to beginners and everyone's recovery seed, it is not a good one.

Some beginners are terrible as doing their own research, it will take a longer time for most of them to figure things out on their own, coming from popular Centralised crypto companies will make them feel safe at first.

The damages would be done before they know what's going on.

Cloud storage is a wrong place for your recovery seed, do not be misleaded by centralised crypto companies who are acting like they know what's best for everyone.
Even if binance creates a non custodial wallet and uses their private cloud as a means of backing up seed phrase it's still not advisable to do that because the chances of a hacker gaining access into that cloud is high and we all know what it means for someone to gain access to your wallet. Name doesn't matter when it comes to doing the right thing and saving yourself a whole lot of drama after wards, some persons only get to learn from their mistakes which is a slow process of learning when you can actually leverage on other people's experience and save yourself all those regrets and resources wasted.

Correct me if im wrong but it seems this feature is allowing you to link with your Google drive and letting you save into your cloud.

Once its related into security of your wallet this requires an offline saving of your seed phrase that you are the only one who knows where it is, but of course because its being a physical copy this now prone to natural occurrence and damages so having a multiple copies is a must to avoid ended up losing your seed phrase and your money.

It's not actually a Robinhood feature. It's simply using Google Drive as an optional backup location. If I remember correctly, TrustWallet also offered a similar option, allowing users to back up their wallet to Google Drive or save it manually.

The feature is mainly for convenience. While some people choose to use cloud backups, it's generally not recommended if your main priority is security. For better protection, it's still safer to store your recovery phrase offline in a secure location, rather than relying solely on cloud storage.

I wouldn't call it convenience over writing the recovery seed down in a book, it takes nothing to grab a book and a pen to write the words down, what those who founds cloud storage as convenience don't know is that recovery seeds need to stay offline and every cloud storage I know operates online all the time, when it comes to the online, breaches are possible, hacks are possible, before a fix will come depending on the cloud company's capabilities it will be already too late. What they need to understand is going offline with recovery seed is more safer than anything else.

It's not only about risk from online or offline status.

The main risk is when you store your wallet backup in cloud storage or any data base like email, chat messages, for example, you no longer the only entity that has information about your wallet seed phrase or private key.

This means even a cloud storage company is closed, their data base is no longer online, the risk still exists against you and your wallet.

It's private key so you must create, back up and store it privately, and only by yourself.
