Are Bitcoin miners, along with developers, generally the most knowledgeable group in the Bitcoin ecosystem? Do most of them actually care about Bitcoin’s philosophy, or are they mostly just in it to make money?

I was thinking about gold miners. They’re basically just people mining gold, maybe it doesn’t make sense to compare the two. I’m just trying to understand. Bitcoin mining seems different. Running a mining operation requires at least some technical knowledge, right? Does that mean Bitcoin miners tend to understand Bitcoin much better than the average holder, or am I looking at it the wrong way?

In the beginning, I believed that those who mined early are true believers on the technology. However, as time goes by, specially when the difficulty was adjusted and you can no longer mined with just ordinary machine, comes those business minded people who see that this could be the future and they can make a lot of money.

So later own, it becomes a business to this entity although you can say that they have become one of the biggest holders too. Of course they understand Bitcoin, in any business you can just enter without understand the ins and outs of it. So somewhat this CEO might have technical knowledge of it. But definitely, they are in for the money.

All of our ideas begin with the belief that what we're doing will succeed. I think the people who became bitcoin miners were those who truly believed in bitcoin. One certainly doesn't exclude the other, belief and business often go hand in hand. It's unlikely that someone would invest their own money in a business they don't believe in from the start. In this case, those two factors came together, and that's what made it work.

Bitcoin mining is a big Business nowadays where heavy players are dictating market rules.

From big data centrums, mining is done as a large business where large farms are competing against each other. It is a big business where private players almost have no Chance to find a block in competition of mining.

When I see in the news in my country that someone was using electricity illegally because he had a mining farm set up somewhere in an enterprise with which he was somehow connected, I understand that these people had only one goal, and that was profit. I think that in such cases, there are those who know how to set up (hired people), and there are those who will simply collect profits. Just like the fact that there are probably enthusiasts who perfectly understand all the technical aspects of Bitcoin and are miners, they also pursue the goal of profit. Today's life is quite expensive in order to have some kind of hobby and not want to benefit from your hobby, if you can say so.

Since I do not have data to support that fact, I cannot answer with 100% accuracy. However, I observe a significant difference in knowledge among those directly involved in the ecosystem (such as miners & developers) & people who simply hold BTC. I do not know whether that simple observation can serve as a reference or not.

Holding will likely have more ideology based Bitcoin enthusiasts or so called believers than mining due to low barrier to entry and higher chance to be profitable regardless of investment size. This means that mining will have less of such enthusiasts and even knowledgeable Bitcoiners than holding.
By the way, most developers and miners are possibly holders themselves but most holders are unlikely to be both or either one.

This question is like asking if most people who buy or hodl Bitcoin are all believers of decentralized financial sovereignty ideology. The answer will be no because the majority of these players in the Bitcoin industry are profit-oriented. The transition of most Bitcoin mining firms to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) data centers business is an indication that they are in the business for profit. I wouldn't blame most of them for diversifying because power is becoming more expensive and modern mining machines are not cheap.

In the early days of Bitcoin I want to believe that the early miners and holders were true believers in the ideology of Satoshi when he created it because Bitcoin has not become a store of value then, they were probably very much interested in it's decentralization and finite supply. But I wouldn't say the same thing for present day miners and holders, I think that more people are into Bitcoin now for profit purposes, a business for miners and an asset to holders.

I know that there are business minded people that are looking for legit and lucrative businesses that would give them money, they wouldn't care about what the product stands for, they are more focused on giving excellent services, getting paid and making turnover. Likewise a lot of Bitcoin investors might not care so much about privacy, they just want to hold an asset that will give them profit on the long term and wouldn't mind doing KYC on a centralized platform to hold their Bitcoin. But no matter what anybody thinks about Bitcoin it doesn't take anything away from what it is.

In early days, months of Bitcoin project and blockchain operation, there were different people joined with different technical, financial backgrounds and with different purposes too.

There were Cypherpunks who possibly understood about Bitcoin protocol better than people who are not technical expertise. There were people who already realized problems from governments, central banks, fiat currencies, inflation and decrease of purchasing power of fiat currencies so that they felt something interesting and potentially better from Bitcoin. Those people perhaps joined with well purposes to explore something that they felt like having potential of solving something and growing well in the future.

But there are other people who saw Bitcoin like a chance for them to gamble with chance of getting rich. Some others only wanted to test Bitcoin for fun, and forgot about their coins, their wallets.

Not all joined because they saw Bitcoin as "a store of value".

Mining Bitcoin requires that you have a good technical knowledge of Bitcoin, that's not the same thing with gold. So for you to be a Bitcoiner miner, you must have a technical knowledge of Bitcoin.

That said, it's also important to note that one can have the technical knowledge of Bitcoin and still not care much about Bitcoin's philosophy. There are miners who mine because they believe in the Bitcoin network while there are others who are mining because of the rewards.

That’s a good question. Having been involved in Bitcoin mining since 2013, I believe that most Bitcoin miners prior to 2017 were true believers, whereas the majority thereafter were businesspeople. However, this does not prevent both groups from generating positive spillover effects for the Bitcoin ecosystem.

I don't know about today because things have seem to not be the same again, there was a time where every crypto discussion is all about people mining Bitcoin and saving them up in a bitcoin wallet.

Today the majority are mining to make instant money, meaning once the Bitcoin is rolling into their wallet they are selling them on exchanges instantly.

There are still some who want to be long term holder though, but this whole thing is common sense, because miners who hold their Bitcoin will surely be the biggest winners over all others.

Not all Bitcoin miners are businesspeople, some miners don't see Bitcoin purely as a business, many miners are driven by their beliefs in Bitcoin. But if we were to say the majority, they likely come here for the money. At the end of the day, mining can still generate profits for its miners, but they also need to spend money on hardware investments, electricity costs, etc., and it would be hypocritical not to expect financial returns.
We are not talking about those starting a small in door mining, I think he meant large scale miners, of course they belief in Bitcoin, but perform an estimated costing in setting up a mining operation. It is hard to see people go solo when setting up a large mining operation, managing the cost is a real weight on them, anybody going into mining has a clear mindset to be profitable.

It is a business setup, nobody spends heavily on costs without expecting to get back return on investment.

Miners have stronger mindset than people who just want to buy some Bitcoin and make money off it, Bitcoin miners believe in the future and some of them are presently running their miners at loss because they can't cover for electricity bill.

The one thing that keeps them going is the future value of Bitcoin, today they might have mined 0.5 BTC and pay hefty amount of money for electricity, they believe that Bitcoin value is low now, it's why they feel like they haven't make alot.

They have this plan of selling at the top to recovery their mining expenses, so what happens when Bitcoin gets to 250 in 2028 or 2029? They made a lot more money, this is why I said that miners have stronger mindset.

I would say that most of people that have been in mining industry have beeing mostly people making as "business".
Thats why we talk about "industry mining". But individual people that are maintaining their operations are mostly really passionate.
You can have your hashrate (completely produced with renewal energy) and produce a nice profit.
This would not make you a businessman - but bring some of bitcoin economy in a circular way!

The things that could appear different from the classic western approach could be... the limit of scale.
Even the best business mining should have some limits, from the network, from the hardware, even from the algorithm!
The "honey badger" even if he doesn't cares he has strictly rules on the token production...

The majority of Bitcoin miners today are business-first, after Bitcoin believers. The reason is very reasonable because they need large capital to mine Bitcoin. Most "institutional" miners do not hold Bitcoin for a long time because they have to sell some Bitcoin to pay for electricity and pay installments on the equipment used for mining, if they are Bitcoin believers, usually they will hold Bitcoin for the long term. In my opinion, Bitcoin needs both. If all miners were Bitcoin believers, the network would likely be small and insecure. However, if all miners were businessmen who didn't care about Bitcoin reputation, they could flee during a bear market.
While today's miners do not necessarily share the ideological beliefs of early Bitcoin proponents, they are part of the ecosystem, and the viability and security of the Bitcoin network depends heavily on miners financial investment in securing the Bitcoin network.

There is no way to be accurate on this one, some people will surely be business people when it comes to running bitcoin miners and some will do it because they believe in Bitcoin and they have a strong liking to it, it's a hobby to some.
I got into Bitcoin mining for the liking, today it's still more than a hobby to me, I just love doing it, but electricity bill haven't been easy like in the past, today you will have to shut some miners down and make sure that no nonprofitable miner is running.

I wouldn't say that all Bitcoin miners understand Bitcoin better than others but that's a possibility, because learning about Bitcoin mining and being able to do it makes you better at understanding Bitcoin, but there are some who cares only about what they can make every 24hours.
