Personally I don't think that leadership can automatically turn someone into corrupt person. But you see power without strong accountability can make corruption easier. Even those that go into office with good intentions can change when the system allows the people to misuse pubic funds without any serious consequences. If Nigeria really wants to fight corruption, they are not supposed to depend only on the character of individual leaders. Nigeria needs strong institution, independent investigation, transparency and a real punishment for offenders, all these things need to work together to reduce corruption. Corruption will become more harder to practice if nobody is above the law.

I agree with you, power does not make anyone bad but when there is no accountability, the path for evil is opened. It often happens that people who come to office with good thinking also change with time. The reason is simple there is no barrier in the system. It is easy to get carried away in such a system. Trusting in character is risky. The most important thing is to make the system work properly and fix it. For this, there are strong institutions in which there is no pressure because if the institutions are weak, people will easily escape.
In Pakistan, we have seen this pattern play out again and again. Cases against public officials get stuck in accountability courts for years sometimes so long that people just stop paying attention Everything should be transparent, where the budget was spent, who got the tender and how much was spent on the project, so that tomorrow this data is in front of everyone. The most important thing is sure punishment. As long as there is no fear of punishment, the law will have no status and the law applies to everyone. When there is a principle that is not above the law, then corruption will not be so easy.

Electing out bad government is the only way out from corruption but Nigeria case is different because elections are been rigged which makes the voice of the people silent and their votes useless. The judiciary that's the hope of the common man has been a weapon that is used to fight these common citizens that their interest should be protected. Corruption seems to be seen as a necessity for those entrusted with public office. Instead of carrying out their duties properly and responsibly, they engage in misconduct—even as they present themselves to the public as if they were doing something good for the people’s interests.

A country with a corrupt system can be seen in the lives of its people. This is most evident from an economic perspective. If the people are struggling economically and burdened by various regulations, then it is highly likely that the country is not doing well.
The elites will certainly try to infiltrate the system so they can gain advantages, even though they are fully aware that what they are doing is not right; however, circumstances have forced them to engage in lobbying and become part of the system.

There is no doubt about that. There are people who would be victims of the oppression themselves, will always say bad things about those who are in power and abusing their powers, they will always be against corruption because they are also a victim of it, but as soon as they manage to reach that position themselves, they will forget everything, and they start doing corruption themselves without thinking about those who are going to suffer because of their actions, and to be honest, such people were never actually good from nature, but they were just acting good when they didn't have any opportunities to do bad, and as soon as they got the opportunity, they showed their real face and nature, and such people are a curse to a nation.

This doesn't happen only in Africa or one region, this happens in a lot of countries, mostly the third-world countries where those in power neglect the needs of their people and society and just care about themselves and those related to them. They keep stealing the funds that are supposed to be used for the country and the people, instead of doing development work and giving the nation what it should get, they keep filling their own pockets, and then when the time comes for retirement, they go and live a luxurious life in a country where they won't be questioned about anything.

It is not only the duty of the leaders(politicians) to fight corruption, everyone is meant to put hands together to fight corruption because to be honest you don't only get to see corruption in high places, corruption can also be found in the lowest of places and if we all can fight corruption at least individually it will go along way.
There are people with the barest minimum office that are super corrupt now imagine those people when they ever get to have a significant position.

Everyone has an individual's obligation to save the nation from corruption. It is us the people who will be the eyes and ears, and let our leaders or politicians set the rules for everyone to follow.

However, most of the corruption cases now, its our leaders that are highly involved, so how can we expect justice if they themselves are the ones stealing our government funds. That's why if possible there should be an election from time to time so that those corrupt leaders will be out in their position and will be replaced by those who are true to their service and true to the public.

The thing is, the leaders are the one bending the laws, the reason why every country hardly get rid of corruption.

In my country, corruption is also deeply rooted in politics, unfortunately. Politicians who don't sell out, who don't follow the "system," are rare; those are the ones who are persecuted. Our current president was convicted and imprisoned for passive corruption and other crimes. Miraculously, his convictions were overturned by some Supreme Court justices, and he was able to run for election in 2022. I don't know what's worse, that or the fact that people voted for him.

There is corruption in public but it will make sense if there is a bigger word I can use to describe politics. There is political games in most countries but when election process is undermine, trust me that does not represent the will of the people, that's the will of some people that want to grap power by all means and when you do this against people, everything under your government will be trash because it lack integrity and no honour in the process.

You know what's so bad in accepting this, we are helpless and can't fight it. The people that are going to effect the change are lost, they have sold their soul for common commodities and food that will not even be able to feed them for 1 week. Well I don't have much to say till leadership knocks on your door, everyone claim not to be corrupt till power is given to them. This case of corruption is not specifically only in Nigeria, I wonder why Nigeria is always put in for front when it comes to corruption. To me almost every country is corrupt, in every 10 person you must see 2 corrupt person. they only need opportunity to exercise it. Crime does not occur merely because of criminal intent, but because opportunity exists, Prof Romli Atmasasmita (anti corruption activist). So i think, being a leader or has a political position can not turn people become corrupt automaticcally, its only reveal the true nature of human with all their bad and good side, while weak institution or bad governance create fraud and corruption possibilities. Lets imagine when supervision is weak, low transparency and accountability, small possibility of punishment which mean corruption incentive is bigger than doing fraud consequence, that corruption become a rational choice for some official.

We can start this change by not normalize petty fraud because when society tolerates it, they unwittingly build a culture that facilitates major corruption. Use your vote right critically, who buy votes often view campaign expenses as an investment that must be returned. I completely agree with that, and very well said. A lot of people in a lot of countries who are in power actually manage to do corruption but they do it in a manner that it doesn't become visible and they don't leave marks for others to question them for what they are doing. So many countries rank very low in the world corruption index but in reality, those countries are some of the most corrupt countries when it comes to the government and how they are managing everything within the country.

I also want to talk about the point you made about those who are good when they are not yet in power but then they change like a chameleon once they get power. This can be clearly seen during election campaigns of multiple politicians who go around and fool people by making fake promises of what they will do once they are elected, and once they get the votes, they wouldn't even visit the same places again.

I used to think people can't change like that. They have been so honest all their lives, never took a penny of anyone's money, never scammed anyone, never forced anyone even when they were in power. Then how come when they are given a seat powerful enough to make them rich if they choose the wrong path, they show their true colors?

I am not referring to the African nations because this curse is all over the world. Imagine you got 18 years of education, then prepared for the exams for a government job, and once you get that, you start taking bribes in your first week!

Yep, there have been many cases reported where government employees have done it in their first week and got caught. The reason is that they were so greedy when they saw the potential in their position that could make them a lot of money.

I have not seen a perfect way to do it, but anyway to attempt at it should be welcomed with open arms. I understand that if you are doing it only to your rivals, then you are making a mistake, but at least it is a start, and if the rivals get in power, they will do it to you, and that way it will lower. For example, if the USA had a republican period like right now, where you jail or stop every corrupt democrat, and then in 2028 we see a democrat win, and they do it to all republicans, and that becomes the norm.

You know what will happen? Next time someone gets in power, they will not be corrupt, because every corrupt person will be stopped before they get too big, because it would be in turn. How do we achieve this? By making sure we elect people in turns, instead of just one party. I don't understand why you are using Nigeria to cite example here, what happened to those countries that corruption is their bedrock? Nigeria is not even on the top ten list of corrupt countries in the world. However, Every nation is corrupt with corrupt leaders Nigeria is not the only corrupt country with corrupt leaders in the world.

This is not just happening in Nigeria, it is happening outside Nigeria and in different countries now, there are many leaders and activists with political personalities who are embezzling government money. In my country, Bangladesh, politics is now a high-quality business where when a leader is elected, he changes the situation overnight by using government funds and corruption. Moreover, most of the political leaders and activists in our country are corrupt and they are not accepted by the people. Yet they get big political positions with government sponsorship and get involved in corruption and embezzle the country's money. The biggest question is, why do the people of this country elect them even though these people are corrupt? It is a cycle that keeps repeating itself. People come into power with big promises, but once they settle in, they forget about the people who put them there. The system seems to reward selfishness more than service. The sad thing is, the same people who cry about corruption while in opposition usually become part of it once they get into office. The problem of Nigeria is that they are lousy, I will tell you with a fact that Nigeria is not even among top 3 most corrupted countries but because they speak ill to bad of their countries even things does not go like they want.
