Gold isn't the safest safe haven that people always thought, there were times when it goes up so high and dumping so hard. This time around it won't be different.
If gold isn't the safest haven, then what is? Bitcoin? LOL. A safe haven asset doesn't have to hold its value at all time or never decline during periods of uncertainty or crisis. Because, ultimately, it's still an asset traded on the financial market. Its price is influenced by market sentiment, capital flow, speculation and even manipulation. At time, it may behave differently from what we have been taught to expect. Financial market don't follow any fixed pattern, and at time they can become incredibly irrational. We shouldn't rush to conclude that gold has lost its essence or is no longer a reliable safe haven simply because it has behaved contrary to our expectation.

The Central Bankof Russia sold approximately 44 metric tons of gold (about 43.5 metric tons) from its reserves during the first six months of 2026, raising about $5.6 billion. This marks the largest sale of gold in the past 25 years.
As we know, the Russian economy is stable, faces no problems, and is outpacing the EU in terms of growth, while Russia’s oil and gas revenues are breaking all records! This analysis can be found in official Russian sources and in statements by Russian President Putin.
I’m interested in the opinion of this esteemed community-is this an indicator that the gold market is poised for a decline? After all, there are no other logical explanations for why a stable and growing economy would “dump” such large volumes of gold without being certain that gold prices won’t fall in the near future! What do you think?
I think 44 tons for Russia with their around 2,300 +/- tons gold reserve is only a drop in the bucket and its not reserve depletion but only shifting money from one pocket to another and Russia not lost their gold strategic function. On war mode situation, Russia has limited financial policy option for its fiscal and liquidity needed. Beside selling gold reserve, Rusia can choose, printing more rubbel with possibility of uncontrolled inflation. Taking domestic debt with issue bonds with consequence, increase interest rate and increase future interest expenses. Russia can take option of selling its foreign exchange reserves due to Ukraine invasion freezing. Selling country asset also almost impossible because take long process, value decrease when there are economic shock and government control inevitable. The last choice is increasing tax but i think not wise in war mode because it can lowered economic growth when industry is facing pressure, with low public consumption and investment needs to be maintained. Selling goold is the best choice i think from Putin perspective because sells when the price of gold is much higher than when they were accumulated are relatively profitable. Russia get fast liquidity with low impact on inflation. I think Putin acted consistently, he see gold as tools to defend country sovereignty. Beside that one of my thinking, maybe Russia do an asset rotation by selling some of their gold reserves(which we actually don't know who the real ultimate beneficial buyer) for buying other asset such as yuan, domestic bond, making defense and security investment or for energy project which i think will add significant deterrence for Russia https://www.ceicdata.com/en/indicator/russia/gold-reserves

I'm not saying gold lost its essence, not being safest safe haven isn't equal to not safe, I'm just explaining that commodity or an asset is all the same, there is demand and supply that will make the price and there is always risk of dumping when price getting irrational which caused by several factors you mentioned. In financial context the word safehaven is an asset that maintain its value during economic downturn, in short-term Swiss Franc (CHF) wins in that regard but Gold is still good for long term though as it happens, the chart looking not so different with bitcoin.

Russia selling this huge quantity of gold does not necessarily mean that the gold market is ready to decline, but it could be a sale to make profits or to provide liquidity for the general budget and to confront the budget deficit, the very high costs of the Ukrainian war and Western sanctions, and not a complete abandonment of the precious metal.
Don't forget that the sale was made internally, i.e., to local Russian banks. This makes the impact, if it occurs, limited to Russia only and does not extend to become a global impact on gold.

Russia has 200 times more gold now then post Soviet era when they went broke in 98 and defaulted on the debt. Relative to that they are doing great. The then Rouble exchange rate from old to new was 10,000 to 1. They aren't at that point but they are suffering a pullback in their reserves surely.
China would like all their oil exports if that were possible but I don't think they have either a great excess or ability to produce and pay for the export of oil to China, the infrastructure is far more on the west side then east side of the country perhaps for terrain reasons but also legacy. For decades Russia has needed investment and development, technology to maximize their resources instead they went the easier route of intimidation to wage war and are now currently reaping the benefits of such policies.

Indeed, the market isolation is exceptionally high as an analysis of the circulations of the commodity reserves in the domestic banking system shows. The presentation of ownership to the national banks is just a capital conversion system to facilitate the functioning of the state budgets. This is not adding in any way to the supply of commodities in the world markets and speculations of the fall in the value of gold in the world economy with the domestic monetary policy are totally baseless.

Safe havens are a long-term thing. Within the short-term, some ups and downs are expected. Gold is beginning to suffer dearly for the first time (if I'm not mistaken) thanks to the on-going uncertainty surrounding Trump's actions. The war, higher oil prices (which contributes to a stronger USD), and sticky inflation is what's preventing Gold from reaching new highs. It's even worse with Silver. By all means, the Gold market is headed for a decline. This will be quite a lengthy one, considering that oil prices don't come down immediately after the war's end. This might be the biggest buying opportunity in a lifetime. Gold would surely increase towards $6k and beyond once everything settles. Better be prepared for anything, just in case.

The ratio is always key to value because we can determine which is stronger of the two and every price to me boils down to this contrast of strength in two values or a ratio. So many prices are denominated in Dollars, thats normal and a legacy of the global reserve system.
Today the Dollar index or DXY was down nearly 1% or about 1.5% in 5 days, its a notable move for trillions in value. The presumption would be it follows a Federal reserve meeting and a press conference; no interest rate change was given. Bond yields rose even with no official change. All this is lower dollar value not higher, on average thats the pattern I expect to see repeated across years. Gold price pulling back in the market is fair but we have to consider its higher on the year also, the standard time frame for gold should be a decade because it can take that long to start production on a mine hence supply is constricted.
Are we headed for a decline in gold pricing in $ on that time frame, no its unlikely for gold as dollar has serious problems returning or maintaining its value vs excess debt obligations. Every bond issuance and reissuance is excess supply, the price is implied. I do see gold will be sold by those affected by war, oil is black gold or money to many states and this war is destructive to say the least on all levels of the economy.

The gold reserve of Russia is very large. Selling around 44 metric tons was only a small amount from their total holdings. So, I don't think that selling this mount of gold means that Russia is expecting the market to fall. There should be a valid reason for this action, for example, Russia might want to rebalance its reserves toward the foreign currencies or some other assets, and so on. Even if we see that the economy is stable, the government might still be needing the cash to fund their fiscal obligations, spending for military equipments, managing the debts, or possibly for importation of products that needs large amount of cash.

That Russia sold some of their Gold reserves doesn't mean that Gold is on the decline, no I don't think so. You should not forget that Russia is one country that has been on war and the effects of war on the Russian economy is enormous and devastating. This has negatively impacted on the economy hence Russia is trying to sell off some of their Gold reserves and try and out back that money into the economy. Don't forget Russia is under international sanctions including their oil and gas , Any asset that is known to be belonging to the Russian federation in the international sector has been frozen and seized. Do Russia is somehow stranded and is been short out in the international sector. War is costly and any country who has been able to waged this type of war and is still showing signs of continuing with this war, needs money to fund it and is natural to look for funding. This has nothing to do with the price of Gold decline the forces that controls the price of Gold is universal, and is not only limited to Russia.

I do believe that russia just need hard cash or simply taking profit because in the middle of war like this they need lot of cash to fueled their war. they need liquid cash immediately to cover a massive budget deficit.
According to the news that Russia’s federal budget deficit ballooned to nearly 6 trillion rubles in the first half of 2026, driven by staggering military expenditures, Western sanctions, and squeezed hydrocarbon tax margins. Unlike fiat assets (USD/EUR) that were frozen by Western sanctions, physical gold sitting inside domestic Russian vaults carries zero counterparty or jurisdictional risk. gold serves as the ultimate un-censorable liquidity of last resort. Russia didn't sell gold because they lost faith in it; they sold it because it was the only liquid asset that worked.

Historically, there have been years when gold has suffered losses. In 1980 and 1985, gold investors experienced very significant real losses. Furthermore, there have been periods when returns fell well below inflation. Until the 2000s, gold’s returns remained below the rate of inflation. It’s important to remember that gold is also a speculative investment vehicle...
Some central banks viewed the recent rally as an opportunity to sell and took profits, but given global uncertainty and risk, I believe the upward trend in gold has not ended. In my view, gold and silver will continue to be preferred under current conditions...

Gold remains subject to cyclical volatility when there is a pump but a country like Russia accumulating it even after selling off a large quantity for whatever reasons they deem fit, shows that gold still remains valued and maintain its structural support from time past till date. Russia may act cool after selling off their gold deposits but we know that the war they are still fighting and the heavy international sanctions they face, occasioned this sale. So I don't believe gold would start to face a decline after this large sale because other countries still own large supply in stock and the price of gold remains almost steady than even Bitcoin itself, if am not mistaken.

Gold was like under 1.5k only a couple of years ago; just because it peaked above 5k doesn't mean that it will stay there. Of course, it had a drop. Right now it is reaching 4k levels, and there is a good chance it is going under that price as well. You have to realise that when a market goes up that much, then there is a saturation; everyone and their grandmother bought gold for a while to make it go up that much; otherwise it wouldn't go up that quickly. And gold isn't famous for making people rich quickly; you weren't supposed to see it go up that much. It is something that appreciates long term, and that is why it was a very weird thing to see it reach those highs.
We should realise that the best thing we can do right now is to wait for gold to go down, so we should wait for it to go down. I am not sure how low it will get, but I know that even 2k is a possibility, not saying that is where it will go down; maybe it won't or at least not now, but it "may", and that is the point. We should instead focus on other things. The next 3 years are obvious to me: bitcoin will go down a bit more for the next few months, but then we are going to have a recovery, and by 2029 or so we are going to have something that is quite high, so focus on bitcoin.

What do you think?
I think the gold market is huge and it is almost impossible for one country to dump the price of a gold may be there are other reasons for russian government behind this selling and also without any government confirmation i don't want to say anything from my side . I just want to say that 44 metric tons of gold selling is huge but infront of larger gold market like 216000 metric tons of gold is mined till now so in front of that this is just a small fraction. For gold prices in the future we have to look at the bigger picture like central bank activities and interest rates and inflation and most important the overall market demand.

Ironically gold surged upwards recently and the coincidental clue which is really key and actually structural is the recent Federal Reserve meeting and lack of rate rise. Bond prices adjusted and yields up with dollar weakening some, apparently we are now supporting Yen because its beneficial to do so.
My summary is all the doubts on gold are misplaced, its quite a simple elemental metal and doesnt really change much at all. When the price of gold alters, its the dollar which has moved not that gold became any different to what it was yesterday and every other day; that is its worth to be inert.

I'm actually waiting for it to go down until now. Although it has gone down of more than $1k already since its ATH, the $4k support seems strong. I'm wondering if it will ever go below $3k again, but considering gold is different from crypto, it seems it has little chance of happening. The moves of Russia, I believe, are because they are short on funds for their war or crisis and not because they foresee the gold will decline even more, no other reason.

Russia might have been selling Gold to help sustain its operations. After the large-scale war with Ukraine, its economy has been severely-affected by sanctions. Selling Gold for cash, might be the wisest decision to make right now. That doesn't mean Russia will completely abandon Gold or that it's expecting market prices to fall like you've said. It's just doing what's best for its own economy. Rest assured, Russia will continue to expand its Gold reserves over time. Just like how China is doing these days. At the time of this writing, Gold prices appear to be on the rise. Is the bear market finally over? Until Gold hits almost $6k again, we won't know for sure.

Ah!!! This is far from the reality of the situation. I urge you guys to be conducting, at least, a little research before boldly writing in public spaces. Russian economy is facing numerous issues from multiple fronts to the point that economists considered it as "slowly sinking" in many interviews. As a matter of fact, it is alarming! This is not hidden if you are watching dedicated Russian news and documentaries. Is it the way Putin takes billions of dollars to war monthly and Ukraine bombing their energy Infrastructures that would make the Russian energy market stable?

Am I dumb or you are just being ironic about "the great Russian economy"? Russia sells gold because it has no other choice. I can't tell what would happen to the global gold market in the next several years. If the AI bubble pops and the global economy enters a phase of recession, a "safe heaven" asset like gold would most likely grow in terms of price. For some reason, the global economy is still not entering a stage of recession, despite having high oil prices and geopolitical tensions. On the other hand, if the geopolitical tensions end, the AI bubble doesn't pop and the oil price drops, the global economy would start growing faster and the appetite of risk among the investors would grow, which means the "safe heaven" assets like gold would face enter a bear market. My prediction is the gold price will remain high in the next 3 years.
