I was watching a video about public keys, private keys, and Bitcoin addresses, and it made me wonder how often this actually happens. Since Bitcoin transactions usually can’t be reversed, we should always double-check the address before sending Bitcoin.

Has anyone here ever accidentally sent Bitcoin to the wrong address? Or has anyone ever received Bitcoin from an unknown address and suspected that someone had sent it by mistake?

I guess this happens quite often with banks, people sometimes send large amounts of money to the wrong account by accident. I’m just wondering how common it is with Bitcoin and whether anyone here has experienced it.

While it is possible to send bitcoin to a wrong person accidentally, the address you sent the bitcoin to has to be a valid address if not it will not create or broadcast the transaction because most of the modern wallet and exchanges automatically validate addresses before broadcasting the transaction using the checksum inbuilt feature. the common mistake is actually sending to a wrong address and not incorrect address. and i think that is what OP is asking.

personally i have never sent bitcoin to a wrong address before but i have a couple of friends that have made such mistake. it is always when copying and reusing address without proper checking and identifying who it belongs to. Once it is sent and you cant trace the address anybody then that coin is as good as gone.

In the past, as a newbie, I used to wish I got Bitcoin mistakenly sent to me. Knowing what I know now, I don't want that to happen. It could be a trap. If it happens, I will be scared to touch it. We know how things can be traced onchain and I don't want to be linked to any criminal enterprises. Nobody should wish that.

On mistakenly sending Bitcoin to an unknown address, it nearly happened to me once. I escaped that because I've this "bad habit" of running through addresses, character by character before sending out coins. That was why I discovered I had copied a wrong address.

One thing you need to know is that Bitcoin wallet addresses are uniquely generated, unlike our traditional bank account whereby if you happens to mistakenly replace 2 or more numbers, it will be sent to a totally different user. But when it comes to Bitcoin, it doesn't work that way, because the moment you mistakenly miss a single letter or number that was on the wallet address, and tries to send it, the Bitcoin address mechanism will automatically detect if the address is valid or invalid, and if the address is invalid, the transaction will be rejected as error and the Bitcoin won't be sent. But only in scenario whereby you misplaced the letters and it matches a totally new valid Bitcoin wallet address. But moreover, such scenarios are usually rare.

In my case, no. Neither one nor the other. But when it comes to sending funds, I’m very aware that I shouldn’t let my guard down just because it’s never happened to me. What I do is be much more careful as the amount I’m sending gets larger, but even if it’s just $100, I make sure that what I’m sending matches what the USB (HW) asks me to confirm. The thing is, for an amount like that, I don’t check the characters in the address one by one just like between a third and a half of the total. If the amount and the fee is the same I put, I just send it.

Well you can received something by mistake thru Dust Attack, what it is, why it is dangerous and how to prevent falling to it. But this method is being used by scammers, so be careful with it.

But accidentally sending it to someone just because you mistaken a letter or a character? Unless you are infected by a malware.

That’s what I thought too. I don’t understand why you’re making it sound so bad. I mean, of course, no one wants to be linked to any criminal activity, but if it was a mistake, it’s not something you did, right? I’m sure there’s an easy way to prove that it was a mistake and that you have no connection to that activity.

To be honest, I have no idea how the process works. It would be helpful if someone could explain what would happen in a situation like this. Although I’m sure this is an extremely rare situation that would hardly ever happen.

Unless it's a malware clipboard attack i very much doubt whether it would be possible to send to the wrong address. The lenght and the format of the transaction would most likely result in an invalid public address.

​Well stuff like this happens, but it's certainly not common except from dusting attacks, which is how scammers can hack a person's wallet just by sending a tiny Bitcoin that's used to track their victims' wallet and figure out their identity the moment the person makes use of the dust. Still when you are making a transaction in crypto it's advised to check the last 3 or 4 digits and the first 4 digits of the address you're sending to. Either way it's better you just cross check the entire address because anything can happen especially when you, as a crypto enthusiast, are trying to make quick transactions in either a situation of emergency or panic. It might actually cause an event where you send it to a wrong address. So considering the possibility that anything can happen, I believe we should be more vigilant with our transactions........

Addresses have a built-in checksum. Mistype a character and your wallet just refuses to make the transaction, so the "wrong account number" scenario basically can't happen. (It'd have to have a valid checksum, which is just too improbable.)

What does happen is people pasting an address from the wrong place, often due to a clipboard malware swapping it silently while you copy. Only checking the first and last few characters won't save you there, since that malware generates lookalikes on purpose.

I have not had this experience with bitcoin but I have been a victim of address poisoning in BSC token. Then I was not too experienced so I copied my wallet address from my transaction history and unfortunately copied the wrong address injected into my recent transaction. It was after I did not receive the funds after network confirmation that it dawn on me that I had been scammed. I think those were part of the learning process.

Mistakes like that are going to be rare because most times what people do is for them to copy and paste an address, and that way they will be able to do the right thing by not sending to the wrong address because that is the mistake people make,  and the only common mistake is that people send through a wrong transfer chain, that even more common than sending to a wrong address. Nothing make any sense in what you just said. Bitcoin transaction are not paid to address, they paid to the script but you don't see them because the addressesare encoded into base58 and Bech32 form. So you can send transaction of any script that is consensus valid on Bitcoin transaction, even if the miners don't relay it, you relay it to a miner to be included in a block and if it's valid, it will be confirmed and added to the block but the miner may charge extra fee.

You made mention of other chain mistake, most chains not just Bitcoin also has error check for wallet address. The wallet helps check if the address is valid or not. So you can't enter Bitcoin recipient address and think send to Ethereum address, it's not possible. The common mistake that I think people do is they send tokens to wrong evm chain but this is not Bitcoin chain, people send transaction to different chain and if you have the private key to change, it's not an issue at all, just switch between the chains and you will see your coins there.

You know before you make any transaction you should check well for the Bitcoin address to make sure that it is the right one, because I do not think that anyone who receives some amount of Bitcoin will be willing to send it back except that person will be kind hearted enough.
 
But I don't think anybody will just make such a mistake although they do but it is in rear cases,
Some things that can cause these mistakes can be, scammers, copy and past errors, regular sending to different addresses and more.
We should try out best to be careful when sending to address especially for, those that sends regularly to different addresses.

I have never sent bitcoin to the wrong address nor received bitcoin that wasn’t supposed to go to me but man I sure wish I would have been mistakenly sent the coins. One thing I would wrestle with in my head is whether or not I should send them back, but by the time I got a six pack in celebration and drank it all in one sitting I would be singing my praises up to God looking it as a blessing hahahaha. Sigh... why delete a wallet instead of moving it aside and keeping the old copy just in case?  You should never delete a wallet.

It can serve some purposes
If it is a donation to you, like you are a Bitcoin developer and have a public address for receiving donation, it's acceptable to take it.
If it not that case, you need (and should) return such coins to initial address.
If it is dust attack, just leave them in your wallet but if necessary, you can freeze that UTXO.

I don't think satoshi's advice is with bad intention to take bitcoins that don't belong to a person.

Send to wrong address errors and receiving unknown coins are common in the crypto community, most of the errors occur due to incorrect copy-paste due to clipboard hijacker malware interference that changes the destination address text automatically. Once a transaction has been entered into the blockchain, the funds sent cannot be cancelled or withdrawn unless you know the wallet owner and they are willing to return them. Bitcoin addresses have a built-in security checksum that rejects invalid addresses if there is a single letter error when you type them manually, but it cannot detect if you mistakenly paste someone else's active address.

So far I have never experienced the error of sending to the wrong address because I don't always trust copy-paste 100%, even though I do it occasionally, I always check the first 4 letters and the last 4 letters before pressing the send button. When I want to send some Bitcoin, I prefer to use a QR Code because it's less risky than manually typing or copy-pasting.

I have never experienced a transaction—whether incoming or outgoing—to a Bitcoin address due to an error on my part or on the part of the other party.
As for bank errors, I haven’t experienced them myself, but someone I know has. The amounts involved ranged from large sums, as far as I know, to small amounts.
Bank transaction errors caused by an incorrect account number can occur because each account number differs only by a random digit at the end.

It's not uncommon, but it's unlikely you'll receive money in your wallet by mistake. I think making such a small mistake should be quite possible, but it's more likely due to various factors, like forgetting to copy the correct address and then pasting the old one, or simply getting confused and accidentally sending it to one of your frequently used addresses, whether your own or a contact's. In fact, there's a documented case like that here on the forum.

If you always follow simple steps, you should never make a mistake when sending crypto. And as for receiving crypto, it's very unlikely, as I said, unless you happen to be in someone's frequency and they accidentally send you crypto.

For banks, I think it is a common mistake for some users. People can easily mistype the wrong account number, but the thing is, bank transfer can be reversed if it was reported immediately compared to Bitcoin where transactions are irreversible. Some banks are using a method called sequential numbering when they are creating an account number for their users. But afaik, most banks nowadays are using complex numbering systems for much better security and error checking.

While in Bitcoin, it is uncommon for anyone to mistakenly sent Bitcoin to your address. The sender always needs to have the exact Bitcoin address for it to happen. If ever this has happened, the possibilities I can only think of is that they might obtain your address from your old transactions, or maybe from a public post in a specific website, or through exchange. It's possible that you only forgotten that you shared your address to that sender. Or possibly they have incorrectly copied your address and by coincidence, they sent it to you.

When I make my transactions, I check the address I am sending to several times to make sure there are no errors. However, according to my knowledge, one person made such a mistake when he sent a small amount of BTC to another address and made a transaction to a different address by mistake, which he never got back later.
Sometimes when an address is pasted from a wallet, it is seen that the address changes due to some keyboard error, due to which the transaction can go to the wrong address. That is why it is most important for us to carefully check our addresses several times when making Bitcoin transactions.
