There is no doubt that big companies have changed the game, but not as most people think. Small investors continue to be the reason for the emotional roller coaster, panic selling, FOMO pumps, social media influenced actions, etc. Lowest price level has been changed. At minimum, when Blackrock and Fidelity have billions dollars in spot ETFs, there is some demand that was not there before 2024.

What is great is the strain of more stable Bitcoin, and in some sense more connected with traditional markets, due to company funds. It has been moving more together with stocks than we have seen in previous cycles, when small investors were the main force.

This is either good or bad, depending which Bitcoin you want. The potential of being fully free from Wall Street is the idea that people do not like, and part of that is being weakened with company adoption. For official trust and greater amount of trading money, big companies provided the very thing that you wanted. As stability has taken center stage, most long term holders are likely to have gained from it anyway.

Retail investors can buy the ETF shares, you should not be confused with this. Treasury companies like Strategy can be different because of their aggressive buying and not selling, unlike the ETF institutions when bitcoin price is falling. But in general, all I know is that bitcoin price volatility has significantly reduced as usual, but I will not just attribute it to institutional influence, it is more of increasing adoption.

about the way bitcoin behaves...there is for sure a "political" pressure to have a bitcoin that seems more like your domestic cat and not like an honey badger Smiley
you can use bitcoin as investement or a speculation instrument but this is not the reason has been invented.
As a permissionless network anyone can join and use it.
The network is enough resilient and has been designed to not rely on this "big" investment / groups.
Unless they can really adopt some change (better to say hard forks! Roll Eyes ) I would not expect any more changes.

We don't have any data that could prove institutional is the driving force of the market, any data with precise enough information will be good to have but I tried to find any valid data, but it's impossible to find the accurate one.

The closest thing would be the ETF outflow and inflow.

Most article only talked about how institutional is driving the market but never showing the chart or comparison between retailer vs institutional buying for some reason Smiley.

Of course. Institutions buy much larger quantities.

about the way bitcoin behaves...there is for sure a "political" pressure to have a bitcoin that seems more like your domestic cat and not like an honey badger Smiley
you can use bitcoin as investement or a speculation instrument but this is not the reason has been invented.

I don't believe in that conspiracy theory—that there's some kind of political agenda behind Bitcoin behaving in a more stable manner. It's something that tends to happen when an asset matures, and the price and market cap grow enough; it's a logical consequence.

As a permissionless network anyone can join and use it.
The network is enough resilient and has been designed to not rely on this "big" investment / groups.
Unless they can really adopt some change (better to say hard forks! Roll Eyes ) I would not expect any more changes.

It’s one thing what it was designed for, and another how it is today. Satoshi didn’t invent Bitcoin for people to use it on CEXs, let alone store it there. Nor did he intend for people to use custodial wallets, or for entities like Strategy to accumulate around 1 million Bitcoins stored in Coinbase Custody and then use them to create derivatives—the kind typically found on Wall Street.

Do large institutional buyers now have more influence on the market than regular investors?

Look, both have a role in Bitcoin holding, because there are a lot of retail investors in the market and various institutions are buying Bitcoin. Notable among them is Strategy, and the governments of many countries such as El Salvador have accepted Bitcoin as a long-term holding and they are constantly buying Bitcoin and holding it for the future.
The governments and institutions of all these countries are at the top by buying Bitcoin extensively, and if I say that there are also retail buyers here, they have also been holding Bitcoin for a long time, so the role of each other in Bitcoin holding is extensive. Both investors have a role in Bitcoin holding, due to which Bitcoin has undergone a slight correction.

Do you think Bitcoin still moves mainly because of ordinary buyers and sellers or have institutions become the biggest force in the market?

Look here both sell Bitcoin, short term Bitcoin holdings and long term Bitcoin holdings and when they need extra then they sell a little Bitcoin from their holdings. For example Strategy sold some Bitcoin a few weeks ago to pay dividends of STRC. And there are also retailers who are selling Bitcoin in the market, but at the moment the amount of Bitcoin buying is more than the amount of Bitcoin selling due to which the market is seen to be in a slightly upward trend.

There are effects from Bitcoin Spot ETFs and other institutional investors but not enough to break the Bitcoin market cycle. Months ago, there was a lot of expectation that capital from Bitcoin Spot ETFs can change the Bitcoin market cycle, and result in something like "Super Cycle" but till now, I believe that it's enough evidence from the market to conclude that there is no super cycle.

The Bitcoin market continues to move with its own market cycle, 4-year, like in previous cycles, nothing considerable changed so far.

It's not about my saying, and you can verify it with market data (corrections from ATHs, to bull market drawdowns).
Bitcoin market cycle.
Bitcoin bull market drawdowns.

just wondering if this has changed the way Bitcoin behaves.
Well it behaves as always: if more miners join the party, difficulty goes up. If people transact a lot, fees go up. And vice versa Tongue

And of course, everybody can broadcast or relay a transaction.

Honestly it would be concerning if Bitcoin behaved in a different way due to institutional investors. For example, we could imagine it to become less censorship resistant (perhaps BIP 110 is an attempt in this direction?), and more prone to political pressure on the developers. But the incentives in both cases would prevent too deep "intrusions" or "behavior manipulation". The best money/concept wins as it will be accepted by holders/users and thus also by miners.

Regarding price, I see not really a change. Institutionals add liquidity and thus tend to reduce volatility as others have already written, but that process is on the way since the first epic bull in 2011.

We could mention though these micro-movements (+- 1-3%) each time there are some news about the US stock market. Bitcoin becan to correlate with stock markets in 2020, and that was the start of (still low) institutional adoption. It's interesting that the 2024 ETFs haven't strengthened the correlation, it behaves still very much like in 2020-2022, with several correlated weeks interrupted by independent bullish or bearish movements (see this chart).

And of course, everybody can broadcast or relay a transaction.
People can use self-custodial wallets to control their bitcoin funds, UTXOs, and freely choose UTXOs and fee rates for broadcasting their transactions. With self-custodial wallets, they also can Bump the fee (Replace-by-Fee, RBF) or use Child Pay For Parents, CPFP.

Surely by control fee rate used, they can make transactions with cheaper transaction fees than relying on centralized exchanges or payment processors to proceed transactions for them.

Bitcoin open source wallets that support replace-by-fee (RBF). Good wallets nowadays even have opt-in RBF for users.
[TUTORIAL] Getting a low-fee transaction unstuck by creating a CPFP with Electrum.

Do you think Bitcoin still moves mainly because of ordinary buyers and sellers or have institutions become the biggest force in the market?
Buyers and sellers still remain the most consistent factors that is responsible for the volatility of bitcoin. Institutions in Thier own way also contribute and still stands as a big influence but in general, bitcoin is bitcoin because of it different aspect and factors and systems that at one point or the other played a vital role in it volatility or extent of bear depending on the buy or sell decision.

Overall, institutions, buyers and sellers both small players and the big players plays different and unique roles in the adoption and growth of bitcoin.

Institutions are the biggest investors in this space and the impact isn't affecting how Bitcoin works, Bitcoin is still the same but what the institutions brought is a centralised way of acquiring Bitcoin, if newest beginners don't have the time. To do their own diligent research they will think that Bitcoin is a centralised project even now that ETFs are a go.

Bitcoin will remain as Bitcoin, but how people now use it is different from many years back where people care about using it the right way, today no one cares about that, it's why everyone don't see anything wrong with KYC verification and also storing their Bitcoin on a crypto exchange instead of their cold storage.

Do you think Bitcoin still moves mainly because of ordinary buyers and sellers or have institutions become the biggest force in the market?

Large corporations and institutions are now slightly changing the game regarding Bitcoin's trajectory in the market, as prices can sometimes rise and fall depending on their involvement.
While not ignoring Bitcoin's fundamentals, I see this influence as quite significant under certain conditions, as sometimes both sellers and buyers experience excessive panic, which can create (FOMO)
The presence of large corporations and institutions often traps retail and small investors because they can exploit their panic to manipulate the price in the short term. The laws of supply and demand still influence Bitcoin's performance, and the presence of large corporations and institutions can also trigger short-term price increases or decreases.

To do their own diligent research they will think that Bitcoin is a centralised project even now that ETFs are a go.
The market is not centralized and they can buy bitcoin from bull market to bear market, have a lot of time for doing this. Moreover, if they actually do their homework to learn fundamentally about Bitcoin, they will know "It's your key, it's your coin" and they will also realize that buying shares from Bitcoin Spot ETFs is different than buying bitcoin.

If people don't do first easy steps before joining Bitcoin market, it's their carelessness, laziness and responsibility for what will happen later with their money.

Additionally, it's not easy for small investors to buy Bitcoin Spot ETF shares, with restrictions from nationality for example.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs: Everything You Need to Know.
Quote
The ETF begins by purchasing Bitcoins from other holders or through authorized cryptocurrency exchanges.

The ETF then issues shares corresponding to the number of Bitcoins it holds. These shares are available on traditional stock exchanges, and prices generally reflect the currency's prevailing market price. Shares track the price of Bitcoin as closely as possible by rebalancing to match the performance of the CME

Buying a spot Bitcoin ETF or a spot Ether ETF is like buying shares in any other ETF or security.

The narrative is quite getting different not because they are taking over the network but we can look it from the angle of each reactions being made over Bitcoin market performance, an institutional investor will decided not to sail when the market plummets and hold, well and individual investor will rather choose to be controlled by fear of missing out and sell at the fall of market in loss, now this is the funny aspect of it, the same institutions will take advantage of this to buy more including the losses made by those that sell and acrue all together and continue holding.

I'm not sure that institutional players are buying Bitcoin with their own money, as retail investors do. While this may be the case in some cases, it's not the case in most cases. 🙋

And if institutional players aren't risking their own money, that means the asset has no value to them. They can't be considered its supporters and protectors. Moreover, we understand that the ideology of free, decentralized money is completely alien to these people.

Some institutional players bought Bitcoin in early 2025 and then completely divested themselves of their investment position (for example, Oxford). But most simply created Bitcoin surrogates in the form of stocks, bonds, etc., and are selling these surrogates to retail investors.

As a result, the overall supply of Bitcoin on the market has increased, the principles of decentralized custody have been violated, and fiat financial systems have been created to suck the liquidity out of Bitcoin. Bitcoin's price is falling.  I don't see much positivity in this, do you?

Do large institutional buyers now have more influence on the market than regular investors?
Basically, with the entry of institutional adoption, it will certainly shift from the basics of the original concept of Bitcoin's independence itself, that previously Bitcoin was only owned by individual retail investors, now with institutional adoption activity it has clearly shifted to a basis for large companies, Of course, Bitcoin assets can be held by third parties or can become centralized assets.

Although Bitcoin basically remains the basic code of Bitcoin on top of the blockchain, but the blockchain concept is not a big problem for institutional adoption, we can see at present, The crypto market will change when the management of companies that own Bitcoin assets or global investment funds from governments are moved which will trigger changes to the way the Bitcoin market works, in that case it is clearly a real change for Bitcoin.

I recently read an article on Satsintel talking about how more institutions are investing in Bitcoin

It talked about spot ETFs and big companies holding BTC, and some governments adding it to their reserves.

few years ago people use to say that retail investors were the main force behind Bitcoin but now it feels like institutions play a much bigger role
Am not saying that it is good or bad, just wondering if this has changed the way Bitcoin behaves.

Do large institutional buyers now have more influence on the market than regular investors?

Do you think Bitcoin still moves mainly because of ordinary buyers and sellers or have institutions become the biggest force in the market?

If over the years you see Bitcoin grow from peenut to something bigger and you are institutional investors, will you listen to propaganda or you will rather invest in Bitcoin? Over the years, Bitcoin was never allowed to go main stream, the government were doing paid campaigns to stop Bitcoin but Bitcoin been a decentralized assets, it fought back and won and the institutional investors have no choice than to buy and hold as well to preserve their wealth.

The same government that never like Bitcoin from day one are holding large amount of Bitcoin in their wallet, they didn't sold any, some are buying like you said and it's because they saw Bitcoin has performed over the last decades, it has succeeded to outperform most of the assets you can think of, Bitcoin has beat all odd which is why institutional investors see it as better alternative than rely on the traditional assets.

Yes, one large institutional buy can influence the market either to a positive side or to a huge crash.

Retail investors also have influence, but their influence will take much time to reflect on the price, while large scale investors purchases and the market immediately change depending on whether they sell or buy.

Know that when large scale investors like Microstrategy announce they will be buying Bitcoin, there is usually a swift price movement, retail investors start to accumulate Bitcoin, making the price move even before the big buy from the whales.

There is something I noticed about bitcoin as the institutional adoption increases. I would say, the the activities of the instructions in Bitcoin is actually fuelling or helping to fuel the growth of bitcoin, despite bitcoin bear market, and volatility. Now, as the price of bitcoin increases in value, so the price volatility has also reduced, and this Bitcoin volatility change is giving institutional investors , even retail investors another level of confidence. For instance, at the young stage of bitcoin, the digital asset can increase many folds during bull season, and depreciate drastically during bear season. But the activities of these institutions which is helping to add value to bitcoin , and increase it's price has also helped in reducing volatility as bitcoin grows in value.
