It is interesting to know that Americans placed around $16 billion in sports betting in 2025; that shows how popular sports betting is. If we compare this with their entire movie industry, music industry, and even books and museum industries combined, that number doesn't match the sports betting industry alone.

Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts???

Perhaps the reason is that Americans have a much higher standard of living and wealth than most countries, and therefore can afford to spend much more money on other things than people in poorer countries. In fact, the figure you cited is enormous, given the large population of the United States, so taking all this into account, you also need to know the number of players to divide it to understand the average amount. There are very wealthy players who can bet millions, and there are less wealthy ones who bet tens of dollars or hundreds of dollars. Therefore, it's difficult to draw conclusions from this figure alone.
The most interesting thing is that despite American gambling regulations and strict adherence to crypto gambling regulations, $166 billion in total bet by American citizen is quite huge and at the same time something to really consider analyzing to actually know how much we're just the total wagered or winning and loses.

This factors must be checked to know the exact amount of money that actually goes into sport betting in the US but then America is one biggest sport market if we even take the just concluded world cup bet statistics it will exceed that current amount.

It doesn't really matter much to the society if Americans wager way more than $166 billion because the society itself benefits from gambling. All gambler pay taxes from their wins as if that is not enough the government also generate revenue from casinos and betting platforms based on some calculated percentages. Besides these casinos also in their capacity create job opportunity for the society so I don't think you're asking the right question because the society is actually benefiting from gamble else the government would have created public concern about gambling that'll not be in the favor of betting platforms or casinos.

gambling as a general habit could not seen as positive. Anyway there is no reason to ban or to keep it illegal.
it could become interesting to see how this could impact bitcoin price in the upcoming years.
there are clearly better options and advantages on using it. probably this could lead to more adopters and also have a positive effect on the network. likewise what happens with most of predictions markets. they had just lead a massive numbers of new users to crypto.

It is interesting to see how sports betting is massively driving crypto adoption. The Americans spending big on bets and using Bitcoin to do it will experience that it is faster, cheaper and more private than traditional payment methods. Whether gambling is good or bad is a different conversation. But from a crypto perspective, this kind of real world use is exactly what brings new people into the space. Once they see how easy it is to deposit and withdraw with Bitcoin, some might stick around for other things like trading or investing. It is not just about betting!! It is more about showing people that crypto can be useful in everyday life. The more people use it, the more the network grows and gains trust. So even if gambling itself is not for everyone, it is playing a big role in getting more eyes on crypto and pushing adoption forward.

I’m sure it won’t be a good thing. As sports betting becomes more widespread, it’s rapidly increasing in frequency and capturing people’s interest. There are underlying reasons why sports betting has become so widespread and generated such a massive economy. I think one of these reasons is, indirectly, social media. Almost everyone either maintains a presence on social media or tries to emulate what they see there. This is one of the underlying reasons people bet. Another reason is that money is losing its value due to inflation. People are turning to betting because they feel they can’t build a future with the money they earn.

90%+ of it has been returned to winning players.
How do you come up with this number, did you do some analysis with data?
Do sports betting also have RTP just like casino games of which you are almost certain of RTP to players?

I don't think the sports-books are only in 10% profits, I believe it is more than that. Only a random sampling we made here in my locality across 2 big physical sports books revealed that only 40% of the total money staked by gamblers have been won by them. I believe the sports-books keep much more than just 10% of the total gamblers stake.

That figure does not really tell the full story, there are lots of sport betting transactions that will go under the radar, not only in America I am just trying to imagine the figure placed on sport betting in my country.
Why sport betting will always be an industry with constant money flow is the there is always something to bet on, they is always that money to win hopefully, there is always that mistake in previous lost ticket that one would wish to correct.
And again the sport event are also making great profits from advertising sport betting companies, giving publicity which drives more customers and the cycle keeps going on.

That is indeed a huge amount and it is just for 2025 I wonder what 2026 will look like with the fact that they played world cup this year, that figure might double
And this is not actually good for The society but the engagement in this sport is actually interesting.
In figures like this it is very obvious that they are a lot of individuals addicted to gambling but trust me though, some of them are not affected in any way at all, the most people that pushed this figures really high are the celebrities likes of Dreak, Bruno Mars etc and what they loose will not really affect them much, as the will make more from their carrier, so they are literally just having fun with the hope to win some cool cash

No, I don't think it would have a positive impact on society.
The only negative impact which I think is going to have is just addiction, which is one of the problem which we facing already. The rate at which people are getting addicted to gambling is just increasing, and the reason why they addicted to gambling is just because they believe they can make an earning from gambling. If everyone is just gambling for fun, then I don’t have any problem with gambling, and I don’t see anything bad in it, but the main problem is addiction.

An increase in the population of gamblers in the united states only suggest that sports is getting more popular in the united states and with the popularity of sports also comes the aspect of an eventual increase in the population of active gamblers in such region.

This is not 100% true. If we judge the population of gambling by the popularity of sports within a region, the Europeans should be the highest by statistics. In other words, the popularity of sports in a country is not the only thing that influences the high rate of gambling in that region.

Two things that should be looked at are the wealth of that nation and the poverty rate. The United States is one of the wealthies nation on earth, with many investors trooping in their market. At the same time, they have many struggling folks over there, trying to meet their bills. Gambling is one way to raise quick money.

Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts???

If there is a way that some of this money is being taken back to society and used to better it, then I would have said that it is good.

The direction of the money is usually unidirectional, from the gambler to the gambling platform, and this metric shows how much people are losing to casinos. I honestly don't think that it is a good thing.

I think this can also be used to indicate the rate of addiction.

Most online casinos are banned in the US.
Land based casinos are very strict with entry requirements.
So, you can infer that most of the people who make these bets are either;
- employed
- retired
- above the age of 18 or whatever is the legal age to start betting

You can also infer that the casino industry in the US are highly regulated.

If you ask me at least from the little knowledge I have they do not have a gambling addiction problem so this is neither positive Or negative in general but must continue to be monitored by the revenant agency.

I trust the stated piece of information about the sport bets summary context in the US was just an avenue to give the public hint about how much people are actually betting on the sports and that seems just a common news that shouldn't be expected to encourage addiction.
Addiction is already in the system that anyone who loses control of their emotions at its course will fall victim to it. Instead what I understand here's that the data of the excesses will encourage investors to consider investing in gambling companies. Maybe ss shareholders or CEO.

Gambling and sports betting is actually a big deal in the US because their economy is doing well and it supports such activity. For other smaller countries, even though there might be much more gamblers over there but their turnover will almost always be less than the volume and size of US gamblers at the end of the day. Also sportsbetting being regulated in US is the nod of approval that every US gambler needs.

If they consider gambling as a source of income and go ahead with gambling, then in my opinion and from my perspective, I would say that it can be a negative aspect for them because gambling is not for earning money, gambling is perfect for entertainment only. If they become addicted to gambling, then it will definitely be morally wrong for them, it will never be a good aspect for them.

The rise of gambling as an entertainment is never something new for those developed countries like USA. People are living with high standards and great technologies, and this gaming becomes one of the biggest innovation of technology. So I don't see this as a negative thing, gambling can only turn as a threat if it manifests financial loss, gambling addiction and emotional distress, but if gamblers manage it well, then it remain harmless to the society.

If they spend enormous amount on sports betting, that shows they're capable and financially able because of their high-end jobs and businesses. Note that each gambler bet with various amount, the middle class will surely bet on what they can afford to lose, while the upper class stick with higher bets since they are born as high rollers in gambling.

There are pros and cons even if we say this is gambling. For one, people can have entertainment and that it can help them to unwind from a stressful day. That is, if the person knows his limits. But if not, it can really give him problems not only financially but emotionally as well. This is why if a player wants to spend his time in sportsbetting, he should know his boundaries first and foremost. If he can keep up with his limits, I would say, this game will give him more positive impact rather than negative.

As the influence of sportsbetting depends on the gambler himself, we can say that we can't generalize that there's no positive impact to the society. Just think of the fact that during pandemic, online gambling continued and they gave the income to the government. And a lot of that income have been used to support the people to survive in those days. So I won't say that it has no positive impact to the society, because there's something good it can bring to the community especially in those challenging times.

Despite this news about gambling in the U.S, I still don't think it equates to that of the phillipines or some countries that have reportedly banned gambling activities because of the rise of illegal gambling and addiction cases. Perhaps the American government has a tight leach on the gambling sector and make a lot from it and that's why there's so much gambling activities there.

Thinking on activities which belong to entertainment category, they do spend a lot of money in gambling. It's unproportional to the amount spent on another activities like music and movies industry. Even though they are a rich nation where their citizens can afford gambling as a hobby, it's still too much. I wonder if they are really gambling only as a hobby, or because they expect something else from gambling.

I hope it's because money in US is easily earned, so they can give themselves the luxury of gambling it away...

It's a good statistic, but it could be like that. There are a lot of people here, in all the states. Where I am, a lot of people go into sports betting. In the physical casinos, there must also be a good portion of very large incomes, but it's because of the population. In a population where there are many people, it's obvious that things are like this because there's something for everyone. It's a first-world country; there must be all kinds of addictions. Exercising control is much more difficult.

Why do you think that what happens in the American equates the world entirely? However in America gambling whether sport or not, gambling has been a large industry because of the mere fact that there is no industry that deals with people loosing money than making money, how many times people pay for music and movies compared to how much people lose in gambling?. But that doesn’t mean the people entirely will be facing addiction but increase in gambling as time pass bye.
