Should workers always look forward to being complimented or encouraged by their employers?
I listened to some people have a conversation and were complaining about the attitude of their employer being too strict and not complimenting them whenever they do a task or complete a job. This had me thinking about the importance of such compliments and encouragements even asides the salary that the employer pays them for the job. Do you see this as also important because some people will prefer as bosses to be feared than to be loved. For you, what do you prefer? will you like to be loved as a boss or feared? , and do you see see compliments as important from an employer.

I see compliment as a self motivation and sign that my employer loves the work I'm doing but I didn't think it has nothing to do with been strict. If an employer is strict, he or she is probably doing it because they want the work to be properly done, they want to keep it formal and punctual. Some employers understand the sacrifice they have done in their business that's why they don't joke around, so if I see them strict it will not discouraged me to do more work, it will even motivate more. The way people work under pressures are different, if I'm working under someone and I'm being underpaid and yet not been appreciated with words, I will feel bad honestly. Imagine working over time, you were supposed to close by 4pm and you were told to wait to complete some work till 7pm and not paid, no thank you, that's cruelty, some people will leave the work.

Compliments are a form of morale support or motivation to do better, nobody likes to work in a hostile environment where every mistakes seems like the end of the world. There is nobody who does not want to be loved, both at home or at the work place so as a worker, compliments are as important as getting the work done. There are workers that need a form of validation after a work done, not because they doubt their performance but because it makes them feel important and part of something good.

Praising good work is to recognize a good work and this recognition helps to motivate employees. We humans always expect recognition, if you are doing good work but no one is recognizing it, then your motivation and confidence will start to break. If you can do it as a responsibility without changing the quality of the work apart from praise, then I will be forced to call you a great person. I think it is important to get praise from the employer in the job field, but strictness is also a part of employers. Sometimes your work will be praised and sometimes you will have to face his strict behavior. This strict behavior is mainly done to improve the employees and perform the tasks properly. A combination of work praise and strict behavior is needed to keep the morale of the employees in the workplace and create motivation. Excessive praise can make the employees lazy and dishonest, excessive strict behavior breaks the morale of the employees and this can be a cause of loss for the organization.

In one of my past jobs, there's the employee of the month award and only two from so many of us were eligible to receive it. I'm discouraged about it because I know myself better and I can't be one of it because it required to have no any absences.
As an employee, a compliment from the boss is helpful and encouraging because you're recognized.
In the perspective of boss, it could be tricky that you'll praise an employee just for them to work harder and to make them believe they're appreciated.
IMHO, words of compliment are not enough to recognize if they're good. Well, we can be proud of that but I think it should also be compensated like a little bonus.

Compliments may not be necessary for some employers, but it is very important to compliment your employees, the compliment you give them will make them feel happy and believe that you are satisfied with what they are doing for you, and that will make them feel like they have a good relationship with you as a boss. It is not good for you as a boss to be strict with your employees because it will definitely have an impact on your company because they will not say good things about you in public and no one will want to work for you. Fearing you as a boss will cause you more harm than good, which is why every boss should treat his employees like friends in any organization or company because your employees are your pride and without them, you will not be called a boss.

Everyone has aired their views, personally I think compliments shouldn’t be anything personal because even the salary or wages paid for the job already signals a job well done. Many staffs you see them been emotionally attached to this compliment of a thing and thinks that employees that do not send out this compliment are consider strict which is actually false it has nothing absolutely to do with that, The only place I think compliments are necessary from an employer is when your employee actually does an extra for the work, yes even doing the required work expected you can actually compliment them to encourage them but it’s not so necessary that any party will actually take to the heart, but once it’s an extra effort added by the employee to see the success of that business then it is definitely important to reward them or compliment them because that’s beyond their job description, and it’s a favour done to the company

As a boss, I must want to have good relations with those who work under me. I must try to motivate them in their work. I know that if an employee is motivated and works properly with attention, he can do a lot of work in a short time. Moreover, they must be motivated to get the work done well for the accuracy of the work. Being a boss requires not only softness but also strictness. Sometimes, I can create pressure on them on very serious issues, but that is not long-term. I always believe that there is no substitute for good relations in terms of good output. A boss cannot be made in a day. Those who become bosses must come from a lower level. They must be able to gain some insight into the condition of the employees at the lower level.

Well that’s a good way to appreciate good employees that are consistent in delivering their duties, but sadly most organizations or offices don’t have such awards. Seems like your past job’s employee of the month award isn’t monetary right? Because I doubt anyone would feel discouraged if money is involved. As an employee, a compliment from the boss is helpful and encouraging because you're recognized.

Even the words of compliment and appreciation would go a long way in an organization or company, atleast it’s better than where you wouldn’t be recognized for your efforts… the words or compliment shows that your efforts are recognized.

It depends on what kind of compliment you are getting as a worker; is it good or bad? By the way, both matter at any point. Because if you are the kind of person who thinks positively more, then whether you get a bad or a good compliment, you will be going to consider both kinds of compliments positive from my point of view. Because if a manager gives you a bad compliment, you will get the point you need to improve yourself and have to show yourself better than before, right? And on the other hand, if you are getting a positive compliment, you get to know you are really doing a great job; this will encourage you to perform even better. So, we should think more positively no matter where we are working. Well, this is my point of view.

I agree that it will go along way and will give the employees that positive mindset. That's just a suggestion that I think each employee who's too hard working and are punctual deserves some bonus cash for food. It's not too much of an incentive.

Let's look at it this way: a boss would not show you love or compliment your efforts because he believes he pays you to work for him and would even expect you do more because he pays you, but if you work for someone who is a leader and understands that paying workers compliments makes them feel happier and work productively, he won't deny to make you as a worker feel appreciated despite whatever amount he pays to you the employee. That's the difference between a boss and a leader at a workplace and it helps to know this so as to not always expect compliments from the wrong classification of your employer.

Not the obsession with money is the root problem, it's a symptom. We live in a society which has basically taken away most of the means of deriving meaning from the old days. Religion's influence shrank. The fabric of communities was eroded. Extended families scattered. So what was in the void? Consumption. Once all the old ways of responding to the question "Who am I?" and "Do I matter? are removed. The fact that it's the only scorecard that everybody agrees on makes money the default.
We have not created a legitimate system of recognition that works. You speak of both character and sincerity. Yes, those do matter! But where do they get rewarded in any formal manner? No honor roll for being a good person! No quarterly review for emotional maturity. The system literally doesn't have a mechanism to measure those things. People optimize for the metric they can see, and can compare!
I believe that "grind until you make it" people and the "money can't buy happiness" type of people are all escaping from the same fear. Both groups have not taken the time to consider what a good life is without economic production. Some people overcome this by refusing to take money at all; others overcome it by hoarding money. When you really think about it, both are avoidance strategies.
This identity-as-money business has caught on even in the pockets of those who shouldn't have it. Thinking used to be the business of education. Now it's the ROI numbers, which degree makes the best return on investment. Before anything else, relationships go through compatibility with money. Even creativity got absorbed, what you cannot do anymore is create a thing and people will look at you funny if the hobby doesn't have a monetization strategy.
Your intuition is correct: It doesn't feel right. I would just put it differently. There is no infrastructure to value the non-economic contributions. No one wants to rebuild it, as there's no money to be made in it. That's kind of what the whole thing is.

For you, what do you prefer? will you like to be loved as a boss or feared? , and do you see see compliments as important from an employer.
First of all let view it from the angle of the employer. As a business owner who employ people to work for you, you will have to be strict to them, which will improve them to work hard, because they will try the best they could to please you. Which their hard working will be the main reason you will get more profit in your business, which is what you want as a business owner. On the other hand, been free with your employees will just make them joke a lot with you, and even become too friendly with you. Which even if you are serious with them, or you want them to work hard for a better profit they won’t, because they believe you won’t sack them or get agree, because you guys are friendly, and that will definitely affect you because at the end of the day if the business crashes you will be the one to take the pain. So after explaining and giving this facts did you still want to be free and loved by your employees? or you prefer been strict?

Dishing out compliments to those who deserve them is very important.
Some employees are dying just to hear the word from their boss because it tells them that their efforts are well recognized. When their employer hears these sweet words from the boss, the person can even go the extra mile to make sure he maintains such standards, knowing fully well that he is doing the right thing, but when you, as the boss, make the workplace hostile to your workers, they will find it hard to cope because they will be in constant doubt if they are in line with the works and activities of that establishment.
It doesn't take anything to make your workers know that they are doing well, so why hold back on complimenting the work and person that deserves it?

Of course, compliments from an employer is very important. it shows that you are doing your job properly, Because sometimes an employee may feel that they are working hard but they don't get compliment from their boss, that is to show that they didn't meet up the requirements.
But the moment you start getting compliments from your boss or your employer, it means that you meet up the requirements, so compliment is one of the things that shows how hard working we are and if we are doing what is expected from us.

All employers has there own strategic mode of operation that helps generate more profits on daily basis and should not be made to go against that strategy, although at times strategies are adjusted accordingly but it most be a high profile adjustment. Some of the major hatred experienced in a working environment is all because of this same compliment, some feels jealous when others are congratulated while others may not, so to be in a safer side I think this idea of compliment should be erased and instead be shown in other ways different from this constant compliment procedure to avoid putting the lifes of staffs in danger

In between fear and love from employees there is something every owner or employer values which is respect, that is the combination of fear and love at the same time.
I prefer to be respected than fear and or loved, however in a good work environment there is a compliment tip-ship that goes with the best worker that allows for more productivity and efficiency in the work space, so yes compliment is very important.

Complimenting workers are good enough for workers but not all the time, if I'm the boss, I'll compliment my workers if a job is well done and then when fucked up, I'll scold them. If works are going fine for straight 6 months plus, I'll compliment them but not always, like be balancing it because over compliments will make them not work harder. So I'll just know when, how to do about it by balancing it.

I doubt anyone enjoys working with someone they fear. What most people don't know is that there's a massive difference between being feared and being respected. The attitude of feeding fears into your staff is never going to make them work better or smarter. It's neither going to prevent theft or mismanagement. I don't know if everyone actually appreciates compliments, but I don't think fear is a good alternative either. Of course, complimenting your staffs for a job well done is important, but even in a situation where it doesn't come too often, I just don't think fear is needed. I've personally had a few experiences, and I think, based on everything I've said, you should have known which one I prefer.
