I listened to some people having a conversation and complaining about their employer's attitude being too strict and not complimenting them whenever they complete a task or job. This had me thinking about the importance of such compliments and encouragement, even aside from the salary that the employer pays for the job. Do you see this as also important because some people will prefer, as bosses, to be feared rather than to be loved? For you, what do you prefer? will you like to be loved as a boss or feared? And do you see compliments as important from an employer?

The truth is that competency doesn't require compliments, you are at your job to work and get paid and the only thing that your employer owes you is your basic agreed salary, complement is somewhat not necessary as long as you play your part of the agreement and your employer pays you your wages, so for me is not need at all and employee's shouldn't look forward to who praisethem or not because sometimes as much as complement is a good motivation it can also create and unfriendly and unhealthy competitions within the work space among employees.

Better to be respected. To be loved and to be feared belong to two extremes which are never good. And to say the truth, I don't believe you, as a boss, can be loved. What can happen is that you will neglect your job, allowing employees to do things they want to do, but shouldn't, so they will understand you as a permissive and weak leader. It will reflect on the quality of their work and on the results delivered by the company in a negative way.

On the other hand, if you seek to be feared, it means you will be extremely punitive and strict with the workforce, creating an environment of unhappy employees, what will also affect their productivity negatively, besides discouraging creativity and adoptiong of new ideas, concepts which could be benefical for the business.

Compliments from an employer surely goes a long way. It is not about praising people for everything!!! Obviously that would be fake. But when you do something well and nobody says a word, it can make you feel like just another number. There are bosses who only shout and point out mistakes to their employees not minding the hard work and dedications they put into a task. Of course people obey, but they also resent it silently and in due time, they stop caring. But a simple good job every now and then can keep people motivated without spending a dime.It doesn't have to be something over the top. Just honest recognition. That's more than enough to make people feel like their work actually matters.

Truth be told we humans like to be appreciated; it’s not just the salary. The salary can make you overlook things most times, but no one wants a working environment where it appears to be too strict on them. You don’t know when your employer is happy or not.

When we want to look at the things which motivate workers the most to put effort and be more productive, compliments are one of them; at least it’s a means for you to know you are doing the right thing. And when the company is not impressed by what you are offering, in the same way you have seen people complain about these things, that’s how I have seen someone reject a job offer which pays higher than his current one because he considers himself more valued in his current job than the new one.

Some employees focus mainly on what they are paid, which is exactly why they are there, but some of us look beyond that. That's why, in most cases, if it's easy for you to get a job in a field you are fond of, go for it; it’s easier to enjoy your work in those areas and neglect the attitude of your employer even when they don’t want to notice you.

That's not important, your work or job has already been assigned to you, seeking complements to me is totally unnecessary. I would articulate it like we are hired by an employer for a certain work, its our job as an employee to do the necessary and collect the pay check. If your employer is appreciating your work then take it as compliment but if there is no such thing then don't get disappointed because your work is not your family, where members do care about you. I want a good working relationship between us so we can discuss and be open to suggestions on how to make the company grow because both of us will succeed if the company's condition improves, so it's important for the employer to always compliment their employee if there is a need to praise them so he is motivated to work because your company will benefit if you have a motivated employee.

Compliments are good, it helps keep people motivated and encourage them to do more, but compliment shouldn't me only about what we receive from our employers. When you deliver good standard of job, I mean when you notice improvement in your job, do well to compliment yourself, it keys your mind positive and you don't depend on external validation to thrive. You didn't know the kind of boss you'll have next and even though you don't get regular compliment from him, be sure that you're doing your job to perfection so you don't get criticism either.

Sometimes, people expect validation for their jobs from their bosses and when they don't get it, they feel demoralized, sometimes this is emotional immaturity and an indication that they're working to please the boss and not to do their work diligently.

Some people are more sensitive than others. I don't have a boss right now, but if I had, I wouldn't care if he/she complimented me or not.
If I ever had my own employees, I would at least be respectable to them and I wouldn't act like a douchebag. If I had a normal nine-to-five job, I would care way more about the salary, bonuses, work conditions and the chances of getting promoted. Being self-employed has it's own advantages, but it has drawbacks as well. Every client is my boss and I want my clients to leave more positive reviews about my online services and to recommend me to other people. Recommendations and positive reviews are way better as feedback than compliments.

Out of goodwill, some bosses or employers may decide to compliment their employees, but it is not the employees' right to take it as a demand that their boss must always compliment them. The business employees have with whatever job they were employed to do is to do their work perfectly and let their dedication and contributions to the company speak for them. If there are lapses in your role, the employer can quickly sack the person. However, compliments can actually be helpful because they boost motivation and job satisfaction, but if compliments are not given appropriately, they can also create some issues.

Just as anything with advantages can also have disadvantages, I would say compliments from employers can have their disadvantages too. They could make some employees underperform in their duties because they might always expect compliments as motivation before they can put effort into what they are doing. Secondly, which is what is happening in some departments of the company I work with, excessive compliments have made some employees less willing to improve. Lastly, compliments could even encourage mediocrity.

I prefer boss not to get interfered into my job. If boss gets involved into employees routine, that isnt going to go well. The boss must focus on how to develop business, how to attract partners and investors. He only needs to look into departments general reports, monthly, quarterly and annually. Instead of monitoring how 1 employee work for later to compliment or punish him. I would not say that the boss should be strict or friendly, loved or feared. The boss must be reputed and trusted. The best compliment employer can do is to financially reward their employees for perfect performance, than telling them how masterful they have completed task and do their job. If employees to their task well, company gain more profit. Profit and money should be measurement of success, than verbal compliment how good I work, how cool I look and how clean is my desk.

Its really nice to hear such praises, since that somehow means our boss acknowledge those achievement done, but its not necessary to look forward on their feedbacks. Since maybe it might result to something bad and they might always look for validation.

Well the attitude of employer is quiet normal, because for sure in working hours they don't want their employees feel comfortable on them. Then those workers will relax and try to do unnecessary things which not helpful on their workplace or the company itself.

I don't care much about the attitude shown by the boss to me, what matter more is he respect my rights and will show good communication to us.

Compliments coming from an employer is something that they aren't obliged to do with their employees, but that could have a positive effect towards them as well.

For me, complimenting your employees could be an inspiration for them and that could affect their performance moving forward, and better performance leads to better results and better results means better for the company. On the other hand, this is something that workers should not be finding with their employer because not all of them are giving compliments to them. It all depends on the person. Compliments and encouragements are important to the company, but it's not a requirement at all.

Now as for the employer being strict, I believe that there's a limitation between being strict and being the type of employer that gives compliments. It's also bad for the company that you're too strict with your workers, but it's also bad if you're too lenient to them as well. There's kind of like a gray area on the two, and that's what an employer needs to learn. As for your question though, it's too hard to have a single answer because both of them have pros and cons, and it all depends on the company, but most for sure will pick the boss that they "love". As for the compliments, it's an important thing, but it's not a must-do.

It is wrong for an employee to be expectant of receiving compliments from his employer, because he's been paid to do what he is doing, and the only compliment he should always anticipate receiving is the salary: you work, and you get paid, and that's all.

Now let's come from the aspect of the employer as well, getting people around you to work for you does not mean they are slave to you or have no choice, hence we are expected to encourage and appreciate our workers to be able to put in more efforts towards what they are doing for us to achieve more better result, having the understanding of the mentality from both ends will make things work perfectly as everyone should not see it a right to be appreciated, but instead a privilege.

There is nothing wrong in complimenting someone if the person did a good work or job because it is what will motivate that worker or employee to do more or better next time but sometimes the reason why some employer don't motivate their employee is because it can also get into their head and they will behave anyhow or sometime even try to rub shoulder with the employer. Compliment is different from being loved or feared by a boss and every employee should have a level at Wich they want to be strict.
