Should workers always look forward to being complimented or encouraged by their employers?

I listened to some people have a conversation and were complaining about the attitude of their employer being too strict and not complimenting them whenever they do a task or complete a job.

Encouragement has some importance it plays on employees but however it doesn't mean they should feel entitled of a compliment from there employer because is not a must that they would appreciate you all the time after accomplishing a job, however as an employee we could actually no if your employer is not happy with your job through there reaction and expressions because there is no how a bad job would be done and the employer did not question his employees so actually when there is no complain from the employer means that it was a nice job and that should also be something to make the employees happy because depending so much on a compliment could get someone fired as we no that most employers lacks the affection of complimenting people.

That's not necessarily but being complimented or encouraged by their employers gives them more spirits to gives more to their company. Employers don't realize and just force their workers to work hard without giving appreciation. They thinks workers doing their jobs and achieving the goals. Employers can't work alone and they need workers and if employers could build a good relationship with their workers, the company will running smoothly and achieve its goals. Workers will gets their bonus once the company achieves its goals which will motivate them to work.

Responding to the topic I'd say yes! Both positive, negative and constructive compliments.

I do not live my life with fear, I'm to respect my boss or employer, do what I was employed for and give it a hundred percent every time.
The same way I don't expect greetings from younger people is the same way I do not expect compliments. Mine is to execute the role and task I was brought in to perform. But then, if I get feedbacks and compliments  I may act nonchalant but I'm willing to work on these feedbacks intensively.

That's not important, your work or job has already been assigned to you, seeking complements to me is totally unnecessary. If your employer encourages you when you least expect it but I don't think that's something that you should look forward to. Humans like to know that they are doing their job perfectly but you can't just expect this from everyone.

Compliments from an employer can make you feel better but you need to just focus more on doing your job and not the comment of the employer.
What is the need for any employee to look for compliments from his or her employer, as an employee, your employment is for a purpose, if a role is been assigned to you, your concern is to do your part and it should worth what you're been paid for, having in mind or waiting to be complemented might make you feel unappreciated which is something that's not suppose to happen in the first place.
It is the decision of an employer to compliment his worker or workers, it is not mandatory, as long as an employer pays his workers the agreed salary when due with good treatment without complaints , then importance should not be attached to complements.

When you employ someone to do a particular job for you and you pay them for that job, it is still very important to compliment them when ever they do the job you employed them for very well because that compliment will give them the motivation to do it more better next time, as for me when I employ someone for a particular job and his doing it very well I always compliment them and give them some little extra money for job well done, since I have been doing it the results I get from those I employ has been excellent.
Some people may say when you compliment your employees too much they will start misbehaving, this is true that is why you have to do everything orderly.

Should workers always look forward to being complimented or encouraged by their employers?

I listened to some people have a conversation and were complaining about the attitude of their employer being too strict and not complimenting them whenever they do a task or complete a job. This had me thinking about the importance of such compliments and encouragements even asides the salary that the employer pays them for the job. Do you see this as also important because some people will prefer as bosses to be feared than to be loved. For you, what do you prefer? will you like to be loved as a boss or feared? , and do you see see compliments as important from an employer.

Every employee does not need to expect praise from his boss because it is a mandatory duty of a boss, if you are an employee avoid that thought, in the world of work there is an award that needs to be done by every boss to his subordinates so that the working relationship can be harmonious, therefore in some companies there is always an additional salary bonus or annual Best Employee/team Certificate, this is a form of appreciation and also a compliment.

Praise is just a string of sentences that are actually not necessary, when the boss does this very often it will just be nonsense in front of employees.

Giving praise is okay, but don't do it too often. If you are a boss, don't want to be feared by your employees, being respected is better than that,I don't want to be loved, I just want them to listen to what I order. That can be done even without love.

Complimenting your employee are just like a basic thing to show your appreciation towards them with no expenses at all. An employer can still be strict while still giving compliments especially when their staff did a great job. Because as a human, we also need to feel that we are being appreciated for all the effort and work we do. Compliment is also a steppingstone in building relationship with your people. Even employers also feel the need to be appreciated from time to time. And compliments are just one thing you can give to the people around them to motivate them even more.

Although getting praise from the boss for the work we do is a good thing, which of course will keep you motivated and make you more active to work or make you more comfortable in the company, but personally, I do not attach much importance to praise, more important is how the boss is responsible, giving the right rights to its employees. Praise is appreciated, but by itself, praise has little value if it is not supported by fair treatment and sincere responsibility towards employees.

It is good if the employees try to get praise or encouragement but to get to that stage they have to please the employer. Remember it is not that easy to please an employer. You have to work hard and be responsible because the boss always likes honest employees and gives them promotions by encouraging them.

Don't always expect encouragement from the boss, be aware of your responsibilities because if you want to get excessive praise, the boss will not like you. You should express such an attitude in front of your boss that he will understand that you are afraid of him. And always respect the bosses and don't treat them like friends because they have reached this stage after enduring a lot of hardships.

If I can be the boss in the future, I will encourage the hardworking employees instead of taking praise from the employees. I want the employees to be afraid of me and focus on their work.

In one of my past jobs, there's the employee of the month award and only two from so many of us were eligible to receive it. I'm discouraged about it because I know myself better and I can't be one of it because it required to have no any absences.

As an employee, a compliment from the boss is helpful and encouraging because you're recognized.

In the perspective of boss, it could be tricky that you'll praise an employee just for them to work harder and to make them believe they're appreciated.

IMHO, words of compliment are not enough to recognize if they're good. Well, we can be proud of that but I think it should also be compensated like a little bonus.
I respectfully disagree, because I believe you can't expect your boss or your manager to give you a bonus for every task or work you complete as an employee because one might do multiple tasks on a daily basis within a month, but that doesn't mean the boss has to compensate them with bonuses for all of that. However, general appreciation can surely boost their confidence and give them a positive attitude and motivate them to work harder and give their best every single time because they know that they are appreciated. When you know that your work is appreciated, even if it's just verbal or gestural appreciation, that becomes enough reason for you to try and do better every single time.

An employee who works extremely hard and does everything with almost perfection but never receives any appreciation for it will eventually start feeling that there is a lack of appreciation and importance for them in the workplace, and this often becomes the reason for employees leaving. A boss is supposed to keep a positive environment for every employee if they want to see actual growth because if you stay appreciative even if it's just done verbally, your employees will make sure that your company always does well because they will start considering the company their own and they won't then just work for money, they will enjoy working under you and for you.

There is nothing bad about being strict; it only means one has good principles, and this shouldn't be a reason why a boss should be feared. If a boss is feared, it means the boss has attitude problems, which I think makes such a working environment not good for anyone because it can affect one's mental health after going through a stressful day at work.

An employer appreciating the work effort of employees is a good thing because it makes the job more interesting and encourages workers to put in more effort. However, when the boss is not friendly, it limits the workers' performance, which is not good for the growth of the organization.

Neither of the two. I will like to be respected as a boss, not loved or feared. It's a business I'm running and as such ethics of business should dominate. Sentiments of emotion shouldn't come into play there. I expect all employees to dutifully discharge their duties while I also do my part of providing conducive environment and salaries. It's that simple.

Quote
...and do you see see compliments as important from an employer.
As an employee, I won't fish for compliments but I won't feel bad if it's splashed on me. I like to compliment people. I've come to understand that it brings out the best in people, and it also helps generate smiles and happiness at work places. A work place isn't a slave plantation farm. Bossing people around creates panic and tension. It doesn't help people relax and be at the ultimate capacity.

This has caught my attention out of most of the replies to the topic, and it has been really enlightening to me that I am quoting it so others can see it for learning too,

Better to be respected. To be loved and to be feared belong to two extremes which are never good. And to say the truth, I don't believe you, as a boss, can be loved.
Your clear distinction between respect and love just made me understand that somebody like a boss can be respected and at the same time not loved.

I agree with respect over love and fear. But now to earn the respect of your staffs, I believe it requires that you be quick to compliment them as much as you criticize them when they do wrong. Or is earning respect still possible without compliments or healthy criticism?

Workers do not always have to expect praise, because their main motivation to work is purely because of responsibility and professionalism. Praise from your boss can help increase morale and a sense of appreciation, but should not be the only incentive to work well. The main duty of the worker is to complete the work according to the contract and professional standards, regardless of whether or not there is praise from the superior.
A boss's strict attitude is often aimed at maintaining work quality, not simply because they want to be feared or dislike their employees. If I were a boss, I wouldn't choose either, but would be fair, firm, and supportive so that work could run smoothly and the work atmosphere would remain healthy.

Should workers always look forward to being complimented or encouraged by their employers?

For me, it's important. Receiving praise from superiors at work re-motivates us, increases our engagement, and makes us more productive. It's fair to say that praise isn't just words it's recognition that fulfills our psychological needs as employees. Believe me, without praise from superiors, many employees end up feeling unappreciated and ultimately resigning.

However, as workers we shouldn't always expect it. Expecting too much praise for every task can be dangerous, leading to emotional dependence. In the real world of work, many superiors focus on results, not routine praise. My point is that both superiors and employees should be self aware. While praise from superiors is important resilient workers are those who can persevere and perform well even without it.

It's very difficult to stay motivated for work if your boss is grumpy and just points out your mistakes instead of appreciating your efforts for achieving targets. Normally, employees are so aware of the behavior of their boss that they don't expect any good response from him, but if management makes friendly relations with employees and says just good work to their employees it's gives a good response.

If someone is treated like that, then why doesn't he feel valued after putting in effort? Salary just fulfills your daily needs, but respect keeps your efforts energetic, and under any management, you have two responses: the first is fear of the boss, and the second is appreciation. Successful bosses remain fair in every matter; along with maintaining discipline, they focus on appreciating their employees.

I would say that the efforts of employees depend on the response of management, and for me, respect is on top. So the real question is, would you stay motivated working under a boss who only criticizes and never appreciates?

Should workers always look forward to being complimented or encouraged by their employers?

An employee should also understand that his work is being valued. Yes salary is definitely main motivation. However recognition also play big role in increasing loyalty.

I think boss's job is not to keep everyone happy. If you wanna be a good leader then you should give constructive criticism when needed. You also should point out mistake and create opportuny for improvement. Most of the time people will not understand their weaknesses if you are only praised them. Again, if you are only strict to them then motivation will not be right.

I can't say that praise is essential, but it can actually help improve a person's performance and productivity at work. Especially if there's a best employee award at the end of each month, which can certainly motivate all employees to perform at their best.
Personally, as an employee, when my boss praises me for my work, I honestly feel very happy and recognized, regardless of the salary I'll receive.

It's not about every task that you get a bonus, it's about when you're recognized. Employees are paid for the task they do which is the salary.

As for the recognition and praise from the boss, a little bonus means also appreciation. But words do help to boost an employee's ego to become more hardworking.

Well, we have different pov on it. And being an employee will give us that sentiment that when there's a recognition, we'd just be happy about it but for the boss' side, it won't take their wealth for recognizing by giving small bonus to the ones who's helping the business operation.

As far as workers are being paid for their jobs, I don't think compliments are that necessary. However, if a boss can do that sometimes, I think it is good because it may encourage some workers to do more next time, as their efforts are being noticed. But I don't think it is always necessary for a boss to always compliment their work, even for small tasks, because that can make some workers think they are overdoing the tasks.Being a strict boss doesn't necessarily mean being a bad boss if it is combined with fairness and respect, because that is what every worker deserves. So, I would prefer to be a boss who is respected and be love by employee
