I actually got lost at some point while reading through the writeup. First thing I would like to point out is that it's almost difficult to identify the number of lost coins. Of course, 3-4 million is a decent guess, but it can be more of even less than that. All coins with long term inactivity should not be treated as lost coins. And that's why dormant is often used because they stand a chance of making a move someday.

and technically, there is no guarantee they are gone forever.

Now, How can we create the difference between a long term holder and a lost wallet?

Of course, an inactive address doesn't necessarily mean that it's inaccessible or the coins are completely lost.
And creating a difference between long term holders and a lost wallet is not possible either. A long term holder who is not longer stacking can also be considered as one of those lost coins due to long term inactivity. I think there's no point of trying to force a difference because it's not necessarily and likely not possible.

While this lost bitcoin was a tragedy to the holders, other holders found it favorable, as it tends to increase the scarcity, (according to what I’ve read here in this forum and I quote “Lost coins only make everyone else's coins worth slightly more.  Think of it as a donation to everyone”)

We need to consider whether this statement is (always) true or not.

Sometimes it is good to go to extremes to understand something. Let's imagine that all other owners lost their Bitcoins – except for you! How does this affect the value of Bitcoin?

Or, to put the same problem another way... What do you think – why didn't Satoshi mine all the Bitcoins himself?

I don't think there will be a big drop in price, because not everyone will recover their Bitcoin at the same time. Everyone will recover it according to their different needs and at different times, which is why this recovery will not have as much panic and impact on the market, because not everyone feels the need at the same time or at the same moment.
We can't tell for now and the amount of Bitcoin being moved will also determine the kind of effect it will cause on the market. I have read before that the market was highly being influenced by such wallet movement of large numbers of Bitcoin without it being sold, but currently the market panic less compared to that time, even if some old wallet which remain inactive awake and move those coins maybe one persons owns coins across different inactive wallet their might still be no effect in the market until he decided to offload it which the effect won't also stay long.
In fact, real data supports this. According to Checkonchain, total amount of inactive BTC that was moved in 2026 alone, which is 5-15 years old, is $7.6 billion, but Bitcoin did not crash due to it. Biggest part of that is explained by security improvements or moving to cold storage, not panic selling.

The Yahoo Finance article about this states the same thing @Hazink is saying, 78% of the inactive coins that moved in 2024-2025 were not from a single planned event, but rather came out slowly over time just as @arzuo predicted. Now, Market has actually become better at taking these moves without any major surprises.

There's a difference between lost, dormant and inactive coins. Let me explain. A coins can be lost if the owner forgot the keys or the hardware wallet has being destroyed. A dormant coin can be that the owner has locked it for inheritance or maybe it hasn't been moved for a long time and lastly inactive coins can come as a result of lost, forgotten or locked. So they are intertwined. Blockchain cannot prove a coin that is lost. It cannot tell us whether the owner is dead or alive, whether he key is lost or the owner is just waiting, or maybe the coin is locked for inheritance. Those are the observations.

People will always panick for uncertain things. For example, if large sum of Bitcoin is moved - there will be panick even when it is not being sold. Funny enough, the 21 million supply won't reduce just because someone lost his coin.

So the main point is, the Blockchain cannot tell whether this coin is lost or being held as  long term investment. That is why the news will always call it estimates and never a fact as regards lost coins.

We always talk about bitcoin’s scarcity and aswell the 21 million hard cap and the idea is to increase scarcity. Record has it that the estimate of bitcoin that has been lost so far is 3 to 4 million i.e we can never have the 21 million because the lost ones are not available in supply but counted as already mined. A Bitcoin is speculated lost by longterm inactivity of longterm holders.
The thing is that the lost Bitcoin has been mined and counted toward the total supply cap.
The information or number of lost BTC provided may not be accurate because most lost BTC is calculated using on-chain forensics to analyze inactivity and statistical models, with no direct measurement.
Which i believe researchers see as BTC addresses with no activity for 5-10+ years as lost.

if 1 million coins from already considered lost hits the blockchain, will it trigger a short-term panic that will result in market dips and uncertainties in the mind of holders?
No.

Now, How can we create the difference between a long term holder and a lost wallet?
There's no way to differentiate the longterm holder wallet, which is seen as dormant now and lost wallet unless the wallet owner comes to claim ownership through a signature message.

If the recovery result in a drastic dip, what is the tendency of bitcoin bouncing back to the original price.
The tendency is already created through the concept implemented by Satoshi to maintain BTC market inflation.

I think that's one of the interesting things about Bitcoin. We can see that coins haven't moved for years, but we can't know why. A wallet that has been inactive for 15 years could belong to someone who lost their keys, or it could belong to someone intentionally holding for the long term. The blockchain doesn't tell us the difference.

Even if a large number of dormant coins were to move someday, I think the market would initially react with uncertainty rather than panic. People would speculate about whether those coins are going to be sold, but a transaction alone doesn't mean they're being dumped on the market. They could simply be moving to a new wallet, improving security, or preparing for inheritance.

In the long run, I don't think it changes Bitcoin's fundamentals. The supply cap remains the same, and markets have historically recovered from much larger shocks than the movement of old coins. The initial reaction might be volatile, but I wouldn't expect it to permanently change Bitcoin's value proposition.

You don’t!

If a supposedly inactive wallet suddenly becomes active and decides to liquidate on all of it’s assets, then that’s on them and the market would be able to manage all of it, worst case scenario, the market would dump for a period and then it bounces right back with pace. Who really would be left without a coin would be the one who sold and it would be better for everyone as we would have more coins in circulation too.
