I actually got lost at some point while reading through the writeup. First thing I would like to point out is that it's almost difficult to identify the number of lost coins. Of course, 3-4 million is a decent guess, but it can be more of even less than that. All coins with long term inactivity should not be treated as lost coins. And that's why dormant is often used because they stand a chance of making a move someday.

and technically, there is no guarantee they are gone forever.

Now, How can we create the difference between a long term holder and a lost wallet?

Of course, an inactive address doesn't necessarily mean that it's inaccessible or the coins are completely lost.
And creating a difference between long term holders and a lost wallet is not possible either. A long term holder who is not longer stacking can also be considered as one of those lost coins due to long term inactivity. I think there's no point of trying to force a difference because it's not necessarily and likely not possible.

While this lost bitcoin was a tragedy to the holders, other holders found it favorable, as it tends to increase the scarcity, (according to what I’ve read here in this forum and I quote “Lost coins only make everyone else's coins worth slightly more.  Think of it as a donation to everyone”)

We need to consider whether this statement is (always) true or not.

Sometimes it is good to go to extremes to understand something. Let's imagine that all other owners lost their Bitcoins – except for you! How does this affect the value of Bitcoin?

Or, to put the same problem another way... What do you think – why didn't Satoshi mine all the Bitcoins himself?

I don't think there will be a big drop in price, because not everyone will recover their Bitcoin at the same time. Everyone will recover it according to their different needs and at different times, which is why this recovery will not have as much panic and impact on the market, because not everyone feels the need at the same time or at the same moment.
We can't tell for now and the amount of Bitcoin being moved will also determine the kind of effect it will cause on the market. I have read before that the market was highly being influenced by such wallet movement of large numbers of Bitcoin without it being sold, but currently the market panic less compared to that time, even if some old wallet which remain inactive awake and move those coins maybe one persons owns coins across different inactive wallet their might still be no effect in the market until he decided to offload it which the effect won't also stay long.
In fact, real data supports this. According to Checkonchain, total amount of inactive BTC that was moved in 2026 alone, which is 5-15 years old, is $7.6 billion, but Bitcoin did not crash due to it. Biggest part of that is explained by security improvements or moving to cold storage, not panic selling.

The Yahoo Finance article about this states the same thing @Hazink is saying, 78% of the inactive coins that moved in 2024-2025 were not from a single planned event, but rather came out slowly over time just as @arzuo predicted. Now, Market has actually become better at taking these moves without any major surprises.

There's a difference between lost, dormant and inactive coins. Let me explain. A coins can be lost if the owner forgot the keys or the hardware wallet has being destroyed. A dormant coin can be that the owner has locked it for inheritance or maybe it hasn't been moved for a long time and lastly inactive coins can come as a result of lost, forgotten or locked. So they are intertwined. Blockchain cannot prove a coin that is lost. It cannot tell us whether the owner is dead or alive, whether he key is lost or the owner is just waiting, or maybe the coin is locked for inheritance. Those are the observations.

People will always panick for uncertain things. For example, if large sum of Bitcoin is moved - there will be panick even when it is not being sold. Funny enough, the 21 million supply won't reduce just because someone lost his coin.

So the main point is, the Blockchain cannot tell whether this coin is lost or being held as  long term investment. That is why the news will always call it estimates and never a fact as regards lost coins.

We always talk about bitcoin’s scarcity and aswell the 21 million hard cap and the idea is to increase scarcity. Record has it that the estimate of bitcoin that has been lost so far is 3 to 4 million i.e we can never have the 21 million because the lost ones are not available in supply but counted as already mined. A Bitcoin is speculated lost by longterm inactivity of longterm holders.
The thing is that the lost Bitcoin has been mined and counted toward the total supply cap.
The information or number of lost BTC provided may not be accurate because most lost BTC is calculated using on-chain forensics to analyze inactivity and statistical models, with no direct measurement.
Which i believe researchers see as BTC addresses with no activity for 5-10+ years as lost.

if 1 million coins from already considered lost hits the blockchain, will it trigger a short-term panic that will result in market dips and uncertainties in the mind of holders?
No.

Now, How can we create the difference between a long term holder and a lost wallet?
There's no way to differentiate the longterm holder wallet, which is seen as dormant now and lost wallet unless the wallet owner comes to claim ownership through a signature message.

If the recovery result in a drastic dip, what is the tendency of bitcoin bouncing back to the original price.
The tendency is already created through the concept implemented by Satoshi to maintain BTC market inflation.

You don’t!

If a supposedly inactive wallet suddenly becomes active and decides to liquidate on all of it’s assets, then that’s on them and the market would be able to manage all of it, worst case scenario, the market would dump for a period and then it bounces right back with pace. Who really would be left without a coin would be the one who sold and it would be better for everyone as we would have more coins in circulation too.

Now, How can we create the difference between a long term holder and a lost wallet?

So far, people have only speculated about these dormant wallets. No one knows whether they are long-term holders or simply lost Bitcoin. However, it's clear that the possibility of dormant wallets becoming active remains, but the number likely won't be significant --- perhaps a few will become active. Certainly, this could cause short-term market reactions, especially if some of those wallets contain a large amount of Bitcoin, but the market will likely return to normal afterward.

Those 3 to 4 million were once in circulation, so saying we can never have the 21 million is like saying the earth never had 8 billion people because some of them have already died, haha.

So, bro, the supply is still 21 million, the supply released from the start till now, of which 3 to 4 million is considered dead or lost, is still part of the 21 million, and we should not consider it lost because there are always chances for these coins to show activity on the chain.

These dormant coins should not be considered lost unless they have been sent to the burning address, the rest can still be accessed or might not be, but we should not consider them lost. But it is true that their long-term inactivity has proved to be a better financial decision for the rest of the Bitcoiners, and they are doing the same for the upcoming ones.

Well, when you put it like that it makes one actually wonder what would happen in such scenario, while lost coins increases scarcity which in turn adds value to bitcoin, when such a significant portion is lost and only one person still has bitcoin, it would probably lose much of the network effect abd liquidity that gave it value in first place.
The statement still holds but true within reasonable limits, I also think that’s probably why satoshi didn’t mine all 21million coins cause bitcoin was designed to be distributed and adopted by many.

Now my question here is; Have you ever wondered that some of this losses could just be an illusion and can someday show up in the blockchain? It being moved from those dormant addresses deposited in an exchange or another address?
Ever since those coins have been mined, they're recorded in the blockchain regardless of how long they become dormant. But the possibility of those wallets that have held it for so long can wake up someday, and that's why the discussions about satoshi waking up and moving his est. 1M bitcoin is putting that scare to many although IMO it's unlikely to happen if it's him/her.

will it trigger a short-term panic that will result in market dips and uncertainties in the mind of holders?
Yes, usually that's the reaction of the holders but I think that most of us are becoming mature and we're starting to have diamond hands. You get the clue from what you've said, it won't be all of those dormant wallets could be opened all at once. The numbers of the permanently lost coins forever is huge to consider and that's why there's no need to panic and we know that every mbtc we hold becomes more valuable and rare if the supply is limited.

This “lost coins showing up” situation has happened in the past. In 2023 a wallet sleeping since 2010 moved 1,000 BTC and briefly scared the market. Price was down but bounced back in days. So, yes, it is possible to be panicking in short term, but Bitcoin has shown it can take these shocks pretty well.
Actual problem would be if the wallets that Satoshi is known to have moved, that is about 1.1 million BTC and that would be different story completely. Regular sleeping wallets moving in smaller amounts? Market will likely ignore it after initial shock.
I quite agree with you, lost coins might actually not be lost forever and many cases abound for sudden recoveries and those are no longer strange in the Bitcoin community, but on any day the wallet holding Satoshi's  1 million BTC is moved, the panic would be profound and long lasting. Let's hope that doesn't happen because that wallet is more or less a custodian account that builds confidence and trust in the system.

Not "all" lost coins are lost, that is true, but not all lost coins are found either. Some are actually lost for good. In fact, satoshi coins are forever gone for sure, and on top of that, some people are literally sending bitcoin for "burning" at the Genesis Satoshi wallet as well, the one that mined the first block. So long story short, yes it is possible that "some" of these lost coins are found in the future when it wakes up and someone sends it somewhere, just like it happened in 2023. But there are also cases where most of them are forever gone.

We have not seen most of them move an inch, millions of coins, and I do not think that we are going to see most of them move either, they will stay the same. The biggest trust I have in this is that, if it was possible for all of them to withdraw, then they would have. Some of them reached billion dollar level and still did not move, if someone reached a billion dollar level and did not sell even a single cent? That means it is probably forever gone. As I said, I am saying probably because some of these people will wake up and sell there is no doubt about that, but the majority won't and we are going to feel free about it.

The biggest positive for us is that there will only ever be 21 million bitcoins at max, nothing more, unless we all get together and make a new branch of bitcoin and decide to use one that has more, but I doubt that will happen. For that reason, I think we should all realise that, the more bitcoins are forever gone, the less we have that can be bought or traded, and that means the value increases.

So whenever a bitcoin is gone forever, that is equal to whatever bitcoins are left valued higher as well. This is what we should be looking at, and for that reason we need to make sure that we should be profiting from this by making sure that we are not losing any of our coins and holding long term while more and more of them are gone.

In this decentralized system, it is difficult to identify whether a coin is lost or held. So even if those coins wake up, it will not cause panic, unless it is Satoshi coins. It is not yet possible to say exactly how many lost or dormant coins, if those coins all wake up and are sold together, then there will definitely be panic and a short-term decline in the market. If the coins wake up and are held again in another decentralized wallet, then the impact on the market may not be felt.

The biggest thing is that only the Satoshi address is tracked regularly, if that address wakes up again and starts suspicious transactions, then there may be a possibility of a long-term decline in the market. But for now, I do not see that possibility.

[We have not seen most of them move an inch, millions of coins, and I do not think that we are going to see most of them move either, they will stay the same.

Why are you making assumptions on another person's wealth? If everyone you expect them to move their Bitcoin or spend it like you expected then I don't think you will have believed on Bitcoin. Some people that are in Bitcoin today were motivated in the fact that people that bought early still believes in Bitcoin that's why they have never moved them and who knows that's what they have left and decided to hold after spending some in the early days, you can't say about any unmoved wallet until it's moved but not moved doesn't mean they are loss.

Quote

Supply does not stop a coin from having it's value, I'm not saying Bitcoin cap is wrong but I'm saying if you have a coin more than that supply, it does not inherently stop the price from growing. The coins that are assumed to be loss, if they are in circulating supply it will not stop Bitcoin from growing. The worst is they might affect the price at that point in time but they can't affect the price in a long term when the demands comes.

Now, How can we create the difference between a long term holder and a lost wallet?
Technically, no bitcoin is lost since we just have the idea that there are lost bitcoins through dormant addresses. Of course, some persons have come online to say that they lost their seed phrases and secret keys to their wallets, but we can't just say that every information we see on the internet is true. Even Satoshi's bitcoins are not lost because we do not know if he will appear someday and access those coins again.
About differentiating long term hodlers and a lost wallet otherwise a lost bitcoin, there is actually no difference because so far as a wallet has stayed untouched for many numbers of years, two things must be in play. It's either a long term hodler just did a lump sum and kept the wallet inactive or the owner of the bitcoins lost custody of their secret keys which is to say that those coins are lost forever. Maybe we should stop using the word ''lost bitcoins'', we should say they are ''unclaimed bitcoins''.

Maybe we should stop using the word ''lost bitcoins'', we should say they are ''unclaimed bitcoins''.
That is true just as you have rightly said the right word that should be used when describing bitcoins that has not moved for a long time should be unclaimed Bitcoin. Because there is little or no difference when it comes to knowing which Bitcoin that is sitting on a wall address for years without actually moving as either lost Bitcoin or is for long term investment plan, so is kept there without spending it.

To me we should not even take anyone who will come online to claiming that they have lost their seed phrase and secret codes to their Bitcoin wallet address . The Internet is full of drama and anything is possible, we should not generalize dormant Wall address as lost Bitcoin because even those who have truly lost access to their wall address can still get it back if they can be careful in searching.

At this present point in time we should expect that more Bitcoin wall addresses should become more dormant this is because, over time people has come to the realization that the key to Bitcoin success lies in long term holding. This means that more and more wallet addresses will become more dormant going forward, so don't mistake that for lost coins.

I guess i understand what you’re pointing at and it seem like an extreme analysis. Switching a whole concept to an extreme hypothesis didn’t disprove the principles but took another form of economic model.

In a market with good functionality, lost or dormant coins actually reduces the rate of supply while demand is constant, adding value to the other holders while fostering scarcity. Actually, you may be thinking the principle was just a forum accord, but was actually from Satoshi Nakamoto (2010: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=198.msg1647#msg1647).

The illustration you gave pictured a collapse in networking and utility, which could actually make a talk of another day as it is totally different from the idea. Stating how dormant network looses its value doesn’t nullify the demand and supply mechanics or dynamic of scarcity in active coins.

'3 to 4 Million Lost Bitcoin' is an illusion only to the people who really believe this is factual and not only a very inaccurate speculation.  A long time of dormancy does not equal permanently stuck in that Address or a lack of owner ship.  So I never consider the Bitcoin total supply being around 17 to 18 million Bitcoin but 21 for that particular reason.  A movement on the chain or a lack of it can only provoke speculation and nothing more.

Yes, as time will pass and people will lose their Bitcoin there will be less coins on the Market but it will never be possible to actually count how many of it is still under the owner ship of someone or gone for ever.  Even 70 years from now, some Bitcoin that has not moved since today could wake up for many reasons.  One being that a 20 year old dormant Bitcoin owner may die that year and their heirs will take owner ship and sell.  Who in the World knows.
