Why do so many people prefer starting a business over getting a degree?
Because a successful business can bring much higher income, while a job after a degree usually has a fixed salary. A degree takes about 4 years and costs a lot. A business can start with small capital and might grow 4 times in those same 4 years. Plus, many graduates still struggle to find good jobs.

•Do you think a degree is important to run a business, or can skills and experience replace it?
•What would you choose: start a small business without a degree, or get a degree first and then start a business?
Not everyone prefers business over degree. Those who prefer business probably have weak family financial capacity. Or some may have a family business from childhood where they gain experience and earn money. Those guys prefer business over degree.

In my country, many middle class families have working householders who have financial capacity and encourage their children to pursue degree. Many boys from poor communities also earn money by doing part-time jobs and earn degree and make themselves skilled. By pursuing degree, one can expect good jobs or can run business well by applying various business strategies.

I am not against taking a degree if you can afford it. Then rather than start a job, it’s always better to focus on a business. A degree is necessary, although not mandatory; the smarter you become, the smarter business you can do as well. But unfortunately everyone can’t think the same way; they usually start a job, and from there some people start a business later.

We also need some skill besides knowledge. You can be educated by getting a degree, but you also need to develop skills. It would be either joining a job or starting a small business and then growing slowly. Everything can’t happen so fast at all; need patience.

People prefer business over degree because there are a lot of graduates that has failed to secure a job in the area of their specialty after acquiring a degree, which have make some of them to regret why they didn't use the money they used in acquiring a degree to start up a business instead. If there's no enough job to accommodate more graduates people might be discourage to even acquire a degree in the future because they can't spend four or five years in the university and they can't use what they studied to pay their bills and put food on their table.
The growth of many people succeeding without using their degree is really mind blowing. The thing is if you look at it people are now seeing degree as a risk investment with a very low guarantee return. The thing is when you put in the years you’ve invested in school and at the end it can’t even get you a middle life. But in business when you’ve invest these much time, you will see at the end you will have a business that yours.

These days you will look at your community and you will see graduates Turing to bus drivers, POS owners, and so much more, jobs that don’t even require their degree. So today I will say degree don’t guarantee you a job and bills need to be paid.

So maybe we are now getting in a world where degree are no longer seen as the end goal. These days a lot people are now combining educational knowledge and hustle to meet ends needs.
People don’t just set up businesses to make money. They are forced to do so because they haven’t been able to find a good job despite their education. But they set up businesses rather than attend poor-quality schools and struggle to find work, or end up unhappy in a job that pays very little. Of course, almost everyone would prefer to study, reach senior positions and earn high salaries, but this is by no means easy. Instead, they find it easier to set up a business or do manual labour rather than face those difficulties. Furthermore, they tend to prefer businesses that are riskier but offer higher returns, rather than a steady, low-to-medium-level salary.

Just to chip, I don't think we can set aside degree, it doesn't mean you went to school to get a degree, you won't make it in business. Aside from professional courses where you have to work with a fixed salary range, there are some economic and business courses you can get a degree on that can boost your overall thinking and knowledge of the area of business you won't to start. Some of this big business men went to school and studied for there degree in business and overall they applied that knowledge to their business and saw the result.

Having a successful business first is the best approach to defeat poverty, business can be study in th shop or market without seeing the four walls of the university. Going to school for a degree after building businesses is a choice. Not a must and it will only help you to add more experience.

You should know that it's not everybody that will want a job where they will be working under some one to get paid at the end of the month or week while some also sees more value in business than job. All together there are higher paid job and also low budget business which also there are good business that also generate more money than some kind of job, all together both are important and good degree is good business also is good, if a man can't afford education he should start up a small business.

•What would you choose: start a small business without a degree, or get a degree first and then start a business?

I wouldn't say that a degree is important to run a business, and at the same time, I wouldn't also say that it is not important. Skills and experience can replace a degree fully, but it all depends on the kind of business someone wants to pursue. There are some businesses where having a university education would be a great advantage. So, a degree also plays a role in some businesses, but it is not a requirement for someone to be successful in business. If possible, I would like to combine the two. I would start a small business while going to school at the same time. I think that is the smartest approach. However, if I had only one option, I would choose to get a degree first and then start a business because opportunities can come at any time. Despite the fact that many people complain about the lack of jobs, there are some professional courses that, if someone studies them, can greatly increase their chances of getting a job

How can someone establish a business before going to a business school, it doesn't make any sense to me because it's supposed to be going into a business school and after which you can start up a business and not the other way round. There is one thing with starting a business when you have not gotten a degree, you might likely not get the degree anymore after starting a business because you will be occupied with the thought that you will be wasting your time in the learning environment when you can just use that time to concentrate on your business, and again, you will see it that the money you will spend to get a degree is a waste of money since most people study for a degree with the mentality that it will make them successful.

I agree with you but also know that not everyone who chooses business over a degree became successful. Getting a degree is still important if you have the money because even if you own a business and it fails, you can still use your certificate to look for a job that you will use the income to start another business so let's not say that getting a degree is irrelevant.

After getting a degree, you may get a job. Which will never give you freedom. You will always be under mental stress. Whatever hard work you do will benefit others, you will only get a salary. That is why many people now prefer business because here the hard work is done for themselves. If you can take risks and have the ability to accept some losses in the beginning, then you can go a long way in business. That is why people are more interested in doing business even after studying and passing their degree.

•What would you choose: start a small business without a degree, or get a degree first and then start a business?
The fact still remains that degree is very important, so people should ensure they to get a degree if they have the opportunity.  And to answer your question OP, degree is not important to run a business, what you need to run a business are business skills, experience and the ability to learn and adopt.

And if I'm in position to chose between owning a business and going to school I will gladly chose owning a business, because there is no age limit for school.  Someone who chose to open a business over going to school can still go to school any time if he or she wants.

That’s just the bitter truth, people are graduating from the university and still looking forward for an alternative like learning a skill but I would encourage if they learn a skill before entering into the university because right there in the university your skills would help you get some money. The rate of unemployment in the society has made a lot of people underrate education, education can never be underestimated despite the high rate of unemployed graduates in the society. This mess(unemployment)has also made a lot youths become digitally skilled and become active in the crypto space. The goal is to become financially independent and whatever genuine means that can be done to achieve success I would encourage people to participate.

If there's no enough job to accommodate more graduates people might be discourage to even acquire a degree in the future because they can't spend four or five years in the university and they can't use what they studied to pay their bills and put food on their table.

In our society, there are both these professions, either you work or you do business, there is no better source of income than this. Now it depends on everyone. There are some who work very hard to get a job, they could have easily run a good business but even after that they are always desperate for a job.
Then there are some who leave their studies after completing high school and go into business, I see this in our society.
You are right, if you do not have the means to continue your studies, then you should definitely do business, because without financial solvency, it is not possible to take your studies very far, and apart from that, nowadays we have to face another reality in getting a job, which is bribery, without bribery you will not get a job, this kind of situation has made it even more difficult.
That is why if you have the financial means, it is better to continue your studies, it is very necessary, but if your financial situation is not very good, start a business without delay, it will create a very good foundation in the future, because business is something through which most people can put themselves in a much better position, much better than a job.

•Do you think a degree is important to run a business, or can skills and experience replace it?

Only a degree takes four years but if u want to get a decent job you usually need around 16 years of education. I think degree is not important to run a business i personally know many businessmen who does not have a degree and still they run a successful businesses because when you were in a market you learn majority of the things in practical . Also if u have a good capital u can hire a person with a degree he/she will works for you. There are many businessmen who runs a hospital while they were not a doctors but a MBBS works for them.

•What would you choose: start a small business without a degree, or get a degree first and then start a business?
I will start a small business without a degree because i know i will learn through experience as no degree can beat a practical experience.

With the current economic system and situation that we have across the world, many has come to the realization that having a degree is no longer necessary for you to be successful in life. I have come across many graduates who believes that going to school at the first place was a waste of time because after graduating from school, there is no place to work and even when the job is there the salary is nothing to write home about.
Degrees were never really needed to be successful, so to state that it only is showing now is false. Maybe there was a period where people were getting good results from earning degrees that gave a temporary perception that this is the best path, but other than that there is nothing to support this claim. Many people in history got rich without degrees, and many of those that do have degrees just went to have them to appear educated or to defend their pride and not because it was needed to get rich.

Personally speaking I am of the opinion that not everyone supposed to even go to school to the point of getting a degree, what is most important is your ability to read and write. If someone is literate know to read and write , then there is no need chasing over a degree that will take your time, efforts and even youths away.
This is a very strange claim to be made because knowing to read and write is considered basic literacy and in the western world this has been completely solved. It is not considered to be any kind of achievement and does not give you anything, it is like knowing how to walk. You can't compare getting a degree to knowing how to read and write, a degree gives you a lot compared to that because it is a higher level activity.

Use the time that you have in settings up s business venture. This will be more profitable than just pursuing a degree, if you put in four to five years of your time to building a business the results of that business will be massive. In conclusion in as much as attending school and getting a degree is important we should know that, what gives you power in life is financial security which only business can guarantee.
This is also not true. Most businesses fail and data shows that in some cases the fail rate is 95% or even more, so to claim that starting a business will earn you more in a guaranteed way is just false and may lead to people losing a lot of money. The way of the business is very hard, ruthless and in many cases it will not work out. A careful planned try of some kind of business can be good, but we must be careful not to tell people dreams instead of reality.

No one knows when an opportunity may come in a person's life, so if we do not use it properly when the opportunity comes, we will regret it in the future. It is very important for us to acquire knowledge, only knowledge helps people to follow the right way.

Degree is definitely necessary for a person, but it is not at all the case that one cannot do business without a degree. If we earn a degree with the right plan, then it can play a big role in a person's life in the future. Education helps a person to choose the right way in his profession and can also show a businessman the way to success. To achieve success in business, a right plan is needed and education helps a person in various ways to take that right plan, by implementing it in practice, a person can gradually achieve success. Therefore, I think it is important to take a education in a person's life.

People choose business for the feeling that it is the agency. However, to feel like agency and having agency are not the same.

The degree vs business debate continues because we are not willing to look at what we are comparing. A degree is a signal. A business is a bet. Signals decrease the friction in Bureaucratic systems. The bets can skyrocket or plummet. They are tools that are different in structure to different games.

For two reasons, the shift away from degrees is really a combination of credential inflation and tuition inflation. As the signal becomes more and more costly in comparison to the value it unlocks, people find other ways. That is just economics. No philosophical reason for it.

The solution to your sequencing question is: "No single path is always better". But if anyone has told you these two are opposites, then he was selling you a degree or selling you a course about entrepreneurship.

It all depends on what the individual priorities or goals are, one can obtain a degree in business administration and still succeed in business by engaging the principles and skills obtained during his  time in business school.

On the other hand, another individual may decide to dedicate his time in going into full scale business, learning a trade and after a long period of time and adequate training may begin to do exploits in business as well and can later to for university education if for any reason he's interested in school degrees.
Individual priorities in what aspect, buddy? In business, individual priorities are not necessary. To succeed in business, effort and dedication are needed to make the business work. Education from school does not play a major role in handling a business. Business education is open for whoever to learn if that is what they are interested in.

All my years in school are to find a job in a company, not for business purposes. Tell me a good reason why I have to study medicine for 7 years, only to use the knowledge for business purposes  Grin

A degree is not a requisite to start a business except for some exceptional kind of business that a degree becomes paramount. To say, it might not be a good idea to face a teenager with a question of choosing between a degree and a capital to start a business, there natural ability should say it all before personal decision under parental guidance but as an adult it can be understandable to choose between starting a business and a capital for business. Not being negative here but being realistic, it's not a guarantee that before the end of at least four years or so a degree will last that a business might be already flourishing.

In as much as a degree is not mandatory for all businesses people can decide which is best for them between starting a business or a degree depending on personal drive and abilities. However, teenagers should be save from the stress associated with this matter through proper guidance.
People sometimes push back against degrees because they see that there are many graduates who are struggling to get job. Despite fact that they have spent year of life in getting those degree, spending times in school to learn the knowledge. That doesn't mean the degree has no value, but it also does not mean that it is always an advantage.

There are multiple industries where employers care more about the certification that you hold than about the person. Someone who has strong practical skills and experience out perform than someone with the degree.

In case of business, I agree that success is not determined by whether someone has a degree or not. However,  I would not say that planning alone is enough; discipline, customer service and continuous learning are also important.

I did not understand the issue in the context of other countries. In the context of our country, the issue is very important where currently many unemployed youth with higher degrees are roaming the streets just to get a job. They have to study extensively for six to ten years and go through a long time just to get a job. They have to move forward in such a hostile and competitive environment where it is impossible for ordinary students to get a job. Moreover, due to the political influence and nepotism of our country, if ordinary students cannot get a job, they remain unemployed for a large part of their lives. But instead of getting a job, if they start a business on their own initiative, then if they can establish the business properly, it is certainly much better than working. An independent business with an unspecified profit is much better than a fixed salary.
