The government prefer the exchanges to deduct the tax if possible, but I do not think those exchanges that serve many countries will do that.

Such taxes are collected from the gains that you made and not from all the money you have that the tax will be deducted from, just deducted from the profit. This also answers your first question because if there is not profit, no tax.

Even if someone is losing, it is better the person do not pay tax at all until he is in profit, but the person may be using P2P which has its own separate tax that has to be paid regardless, but I think it has to be automatic because it is stamp duty and not personal income tax.

Exchanges will be the ones taking the tax, knowing it would come this way, i am not surprised.

To your question, it is already written there that there would be a task on profit made from the sell of Crypto-currency asset and also stamp duty on all transactions made.
I am expecting the stamp duty to be very small, with this type of development it is time we start to encourage more people to begin to accept Bitcoin as a means of exchange.
This tax is effective when you convert your Crypto-currency into fiat because that's when your profit would be calculated.
To your other question, I don't think there would be any tax on loses.

Government will not take any further  step about improving the community, but we always look for different means to generate income in form of tax from the people, this is unfair.

Since this is what is happening now, we all should be careful of the exchange with use that supports government regulations, especially to those that are nearly reinstated back to the use of the OKX exchange among others, government will be using them to sneak out profit from us in an unsuspecting manner, show me even go to the length of freezing user accounts.

That is just part of the tax which is stamp duty, the tax is more than that, it is up to 30% in some areas.

You can see penalties, which means exchanges can not do all the work. But if you are referring to stamp duty, it has to be the work of the exchanges and not paid manually.

There is more clarification of the tax but crypto tax in Nigeria has taken effect since January 1 2026.

I tried to understand and read through the pdf and it seems the tax guidelines is trying to separate gains from investing in crypto and gains caused Naira inflation. Another thing is whether it can actually work. But is seems it has a clear understanding that if really applied is a good thing. The government is trying now to tax visual assets.

The Nigerian government "thing" is playing out again. We've seen the announcement but the details of the plans I think aren't explicit enough for everyone to understand. Also, I want to know how this will affect Nigerians who mostly use P2P and non custodial wallets instead of local exchanges.

The government should try make the rules simple enough for everyone to understand, that is if they really want everyone in the crypto sector to comply. The losses and how the tax will be calculated seem to not be clear enough.

It can’t be simpler than that though..  you have to take your time to go through the relevant aspect that fits what you do.

Check the category section to easily identify that, if it doesn’t make any sense then try to do more research on what you didn’t understand..

They did that before with Kucoin and it simply require sending memo to the exchanges via Nigerian SEC and the exchanges will be obligated to implement that. I know that people will find ways of evading the taxes especially when it becomes too big like 20% or more as we are paying already in other sectors.

At the end of the day, it's wise to agree that we as Nigerians now literally get taxed for every means of income we get and that's why most unbanked prefer to receive payments in cash and save money in their homes instead of putting it in the bank or leaving it on exchanges.

Am also sure we would not even know whe the tax deduction happens because the exchange we use would do so automatically and pay it in bulk to the government inorder to remain in business.

The Nigerian government is one of the most foolish leaders when it comes to crypto round table conclusions. I don't know the people guiding this government with tips on how to make moves, they don't even know the people they are dealing with. The proposed tax on the economy went silent but we knew it's because election is in the corner, they are waiting for the election to be concluded so they can use it as advantage to be implement it and I'm sure it will come along with crypto tax.

I know for a fact that the tax system is not going to work, crypto or not. We have alot of pending issues, the exchanges are not functioning as it should be, there is no p2p to support traders, so who is going to use them when I can look for a vendor and make a trade without an exchange. Kucoin was making alot of VATs back then but as they no longer serve p2p service many lefts, same with Binance. They think it's airdrop participants that are making noise on X that are in crypto? This government understand nothing but we will shall see.
