This is actually a right approach because it would help to eliminate or eradicate addiction amount individuals across that particular country. Honestly this should be the best thing any government should be doing for her citizens to make sure they don't entirely rely on gambling to make end meet, the reason why many people are falling into gambling addiction could be as a course of lack of employment opportunities or lack of jobs around them where many of them do find it difficult to make a living for themselves, where there is no work they wouldn't have any choices than to gamble and the more they kept gambling the more possible and likely for them to be addicted to gambling. Those established countries or a 1st world countries do care about their citizens and would never want to lose any life in their country, these are countries that has good plans for everyone as long as you belong and from there or having a citizenship card you are free to participate and partake of everything that is solidly coming from that country. If a charity organization takes advantage of people's empathy to render help by using the funding for their personal gain, I wont be surprised if the foundation authorized to carry out this operation will do the same.

I pray it doesn't come to our country because this service is going to be abused. A country where normal citizens without any history of being handicapped will claim they are blind, deaf, and can't speak to beg for help on the streets. Some countries don't deserve this service. The level of self-entitlement is high. Take a look at what VDM is doing in the country, yet many people come there with entitlement for help. I recently watched a video where a woman purposely asked for help with the audacity that she deserves it. It will be what this service will turn into if brought into the country.

This is interesting to hear about and a good news to the citizens and those that will be a beneficiary under this category, I often see less attention over addicted gamblers either by individual or government putting them in consideration, until I came across this to have more conviction that such is possible and there are people that have the interest of addicted fellows in mind to ensure the gate back on track, that I'm seeing this coming from the government is also another surprising thing and I hope other countries will also see and emulate something similar to this or even do better.

It is very frowning but there are certainly people are intentionally going to subscribe to be fake victims so that they can have means to benefit from the vision of the organization.

Honestly, the news of the funding alone can encourage addiction.
Watch to see reports from the country about how gambling adoption is rising with increase of addicted victims.
I also doubt if there is ever going to be an institutions that can truly carry on this funding project and keep it up for the long time.
It usually turns out active in the start and the systems reputation crashes.

This is a good initiative; at least we have a body that cares about addicted gamblers. If this will be abused or not will depend on how strong the structure is and how far they can go to make sure the system is not abused much, as we have some gamblers who will want to take advantage of such an offer, and the payment maximum, I believe, will also be on physical verification of what they believe the damage cost.

I would welcome these kind of programs here in my country, even if gambling addiction is not such huge problem here as it is in other countries of Africa and Asia.
As I read the article, it seems this is being done in a manner so it is very difficult for a gambling addict to abuse and pocket money.

In the end, nobody wants to become addicted to anything, everyone wants to be in control of their actions and money.
As long as these funds are well-managed and they don't represent and serious load to the average tax payer, they are good.

It would be nice to see some study on the effectiveness of these programs, though.

I don’t  think this would be abused unless the agents  in charge of handling the funds being distributed involve themselves in such act.

From the quote OP posted ,  it seems they are considering those with history of such addictions so anyone trying to get addicted can use a recent case after launch [unless that’s allowed then I would say the whole grant thing is not well considered for all sorts of manipulation].

The funding and this initiative has a genuine concern for those badly affected and want to change their lives. They need a helping hand to change the course that they've taken because that's a path that did them bad. So, this is going to be several organizations which are into this philantropic work of helping who have been addicted to gambling. The government just transfers the funds to these organizations and they'll be the one to manage it, I think they've got enough ways of determining who are the needy ones or those who are already in their care and shelter. Our country needs something like this but sadly, corruption is too rampant in our government and the funding might not go to these orgs.

Humans can have a change of mind when no one is watching. I honestly do not think the help should be done this way. Let the affected individuals be taken to an asylum for further care. If, in the end, they pass the test, part of the amount should be given to the individual while the rest should be given to the family.

I do not think so, no one will be addicted for the money that can not fully replace back the money that has lost. Prevention is better than cure is what most people know. It will not encourage addiction the way I see it.

Obviously the money can not be given to the person that is addicted. I believe the money will be given to the family of the addicted person and the addicted person will be under their rehabilitation program. Part of the money will be used to set up rehabilitation services for gambling addiction victims.

I feel those addicted should be left to tackle the process of recovery themselves without financial aiding, help are giving to those who are willing to help themselves. Most of them, after knowing this, won't take any prevention, since there is a provision for them not facing consequences.

Not to be surprised, some of them will use the aided funds to continue gambling, recovery is not all about recovering resources, but mental wellness.

You misunderstood the news. It does not say that gambling addicts will receive the grant directly. If you read it carefully, the grants  " will be given to community groups, charities and social enterprises that help people deal with gambling addiction and debt." So its already wrong to assume that addicts themselves will receive the money. The government is not stupid enough to simply hand grants directly to gamblers.

But I understand your concern because this type of grant may have weak liquidation or monitoring. So it can easily be misused if the people receiving or handling the funds are corrupt. If this happened in our country, I would not be surprised if 50% went to government officials, then the remaining funds were also misused by some community leaders.

These are funds allocated by the state for the social needs of people, because it is the people who pay taxes so that the state can take care of them. I am more than 100% sure that the majority of this money will be plundered through money laundering schemes, but still some part will go to the work of charitable organizations and foundations that are engaged specifically in supporting and helping vulnerable people.

My concern lies with the person who has access to the money. What if he or she has an urge to gamble too?

I'd love to share a brief story from 2 years back within my community. I guess it's because of that experince I still have doubts about who the money should be given to. So back to the story. A young guy stole some properties for sale in my hostel and was caught. He claimed he wanted to pay back the tuition fee he lost during gambling. Out of pity, a few of us contributed money for his fees and told him to return the property. Because we never wanted him to gamble with the money we prmosed we gave it to his older brother, who is in his final year. Days went by; the fees weren't paid because his elder brother had already gambled with it. It caused a fight between the two brothers. What's your take on this?

Yeah, that wouldn't make sense, especially on a large scale. I'd lose a million pounds just to hopefully get a grant of 75,000 pounds a year—and who knows what the conditions would be.

I wouldn't mind if part of the taxes the state collects from gambling were allocated to a fund like that. They should be earmarked taxes. We can’t rule out the possibility that someone might try to game the system, but since most betting today takes place online—where everything is recorded, including the affected person’s financial situation (bank account transactions show how much they had, how much they lost, whether they took out loans to gamble, etc.)—it’s likely that the funds will ultimately go to the people who need them. But we’ll have to wait and see over time whether this program actually works well.
