This image popped up in a Facebook feed yesterday. I have to save it to hear the community's thoughts on this.

The image is of someone who I believe is in a casino playing slots based on the background and the right-up on the shirt, saying he’s not addicted to gambling but addicted to hope, which is the hope that he can actually win big and change his life, which I don’t even see any difference between.

How can one be addicted to hope and not to gambling, but the same hope is for gambling to give him winnings?

When a gambler says that he is not addicted to gambling but is addicted to hope, it must be assumed that he is addicted to gambling and that he is just changing the language and promoting his addiction to gambling.

Every person lives on hope. But when a gambler is heard to say "I am addicted to hope", he will continue to gamble more to win and will tempt others.

If you are optimistic about anything other than gambling and keep trying, your chances of success will increase greatly. In gambling, optimistic tendencies will only keep you in losses and lead you to addiction.

It's like they are on a self-denying stage where hope is the real drug behind those bets. Sometimes I experience this especially on lose streak, lol. Like that same hope is what keeps pulling me back even after the losses.

This is just wordplay and an attempt to deceive oneself. Even if he is not addicted to gambling but is addicted to the hope of winning a large sum of money through gambling, the result is the same: he is an addict in need of treatment.

Hope is a beautiful and very necessary thing in a person's life, but hope should be for a better life, for stability, happiness, and achieving peace of mind, not for winning a large sum of money through gambling. I think it is just a psychological trick to justify continuing in addiction.

As funny it may look ,he is just trying to let people know he has hope to win big one day ,and not to be seen as an addicted gamblers, people who are addicted always find way to make people feel they actually knows what they doing ,but this same hope has led many into addiction, everyone is earger to win more or a life changing amount,so it's actually normal to see such write up ,hope had made many indulge in so many things which sometime don't work out the way they planned it ,you can have hope of winning a life changing amount and still end up losing all you have .

The guy is a joke; maybe he might probably have been confronted by those close to him about his gambling addiction, and he tries to play defense by saying he’s just too focused on his hope and not necessarily about gambling addictions, which he’s more of a joke to himself with those words if he actually believes in it.
It's all pretty clear. The addict is trying to turn their addiction into a joke. If it's gotten to this point, it's a warning sign that they need help treating this disease. There's no other way to describe it. It's a real illness that requires not only the help of specialists but also the support of loved ones. The sooner this is done, the fewer negative consequences are expected. I certainly wouldn't take it so lightly.

I was such a gambler myself. But I never had the desire to turn this illness into a joke. On the contrary, I took it very seriously.

I think this is more of a joke to let people know he is a gambling addict
It is play on words but truth is he likes to gamble and is hoping to win big

If there is no hope, no dreams then humanity would come to an end pretty quickly. I know I sound dramatic but it is the truth, the shirt on that guy may be as a funny statement yet every single gambler including me have objectives when playing even when someone is fully addicted they still have objectives. This guy just want to be funny in a meaningful way and that statement looks good and also give hope to people feeling hopeless which is a good thing. I like these type of guys honestly finding fun even in the middle of big losing sessions.

It's still the same. The guy only make it sound less shameful than saying he is addicted to gambling.
It's just another term he used, he is hoping to have big winnings in gambling. And despite the risk, he continue to gamble. It is the same concept of when a person wants to escape his financial problems through gambling, which is caused by a psychological effect driven by gambling addiction.

Hope is not a separated situation from gambling addiction, because it is the foundation that keeps an individual gambler to continue gambling.

~How can one be addicted to hope and not to gambling, but the same hope is for gambling to give him winnings?

Poor guy. What can I say? You can call hope, mope, dope ... It's always the same thing: you want to get big money without working for it. Judging by his looks, this guy is in his fifties, and yet he still hasn't realised how stupid it is to have that "hope". And how arrogant is that, either. Millions of people work hard to make their money, and here he is, smarter than everyone!

This guy’s primary goal is to attract attention—and he has succeeded. Even if we don’t know him personally, we’ll end up telling others about his existence.
The reality, however, is that he is deluding himself.
He isn’t addicted to hope; he aims to make a lot of money quickly and hopes to achieve that through gambling. That is why he claims his situation is about hope rather than gambling.
Whatever it is he’s hoping for, I am certain it won’t come from slot machines.

Some gamblers are actually funny, because I see no reason why someone would purposely say he's not addicted to gambling, but addicted to hope, knowing pretty well that gambling depends on luck.

Honestly, I think he's just trying to cover up in the game, because it's pretty obvious that he's going through a lot with gambling, so that people wouldn't have anything to say about his addiction anymore. That's absolutely what he's doing, and it's not advisable for someone to hope on gambling.

Hope is said to be the last to die, gambling in fact continues thanks to people's hope and desires, it is essentially a psychological game.
If you play, you could win a lot of money and "solve" your problems, but the bad part is that you find yourself in a dangerous tunnel.
Psychologically, you follow hope, neglecting everything you're throwing away, time and money.
Unfortunately, the first mistake is always made by the player and not the game.

They are not addicted to hope, it's just an excuse to justify their bad gambling habits/addiction. If you have heard the phrase "gambler's quit right before they hit it big", it's basically the same thing as what was shown on that guy's shirt.
I agree with what you said, but we can’t dispute that fact that the statement are obvious reasons why most people are gambling addicted, if there isn’t hope on every trial nobody will gamble. To me it’s not an excuse, he’s just letting it out just as it is. If you’re a gambler you’ll probably understand me much better.
The hope in the next trial to get a win is what keep the system going, with that we can agree that gambling addict are addicted to hopes that aren’t guaranteed. I do not see anything off in the statement.

Being addicted to hope is very positive, so any gambler will continue to try keep his hope alive. If you analyze the attitude of several gamblers, they often do not expect much from gambling. Most experienced gamblers try to win in gambling but do not give up hope.

Op As you said, that gambler may change his life by winning a large sum of money. I think the person wearing the t-shirt may not be expecting a big win, he may have talked about making small bets and bet hoping to win on each bet. Maybe he analyzes before placing a bet.

A person can be addicted to hope but that does not mean that he will be addicted to gambling. I think literally a gambler should refrain from being addicted to any kind of addiction if he does not want to suffer losses.

What is the driving force behind gambling? That's the hope. The hope of winning. And in a broader sense, the hope of a miracle that will change a person's life for the better, fulfill his dreams, and make him happy. Of course, such an inscription about hope looks better than - "I'm an addicted gambler, don't bother me."

People must learn difference of hope to gambling addiction.

Thank you for been honest, I can see few people debunking this like it's a lie but it's truly not, if someone won a big amount of money from gambling and they showed you, it could trigger that hope in you.

This has happened to many gamblers and they can't even come out and say that this was why they started to gamble in the first place because it will be like a shameful thing to do.

Many gamblers are triggered by someone's else wins, they want to be the next on the line because they failed to accept that the winner got lucky is all..

The point there is just so obvious. The man is only whining (deceiving) himself that is addicted to hope, why deep down he knows he's sinking in addiction. Unless he was only joking about it. But even as that, wearing a t-shirt that is carrying such information has automatically shown him to people's around that his own case of addiction in gamble is beyond repair, perhaps that is just the easiest way he has subjected himself to some kind of public mockery.

Furthermore, some people has failed to control their gamble habits instead they are been controlled by gambling with no specific directions and it's sad.

How can one be addicted to hope and not to gambling, but the same hope is for gambling to give him winnings?

At least he has made peace with the fact that he is already addicted. the fact that he is using hope as a substitute to his current addiction only explains how impossible it is for people to accept certain things especially when it has long been associated with negativity. every gambler both the ones that are addicted and the ones that are not addicted always have this hope that in some ways they are going to win what do you think is the thing that keeps them coming for more even when they have so many times.

Funny fact is that wearing a T shirt that says "i am not addicted" does not mean you are not. even while wearing that shirt, you on your end already knows wether or not you are already addicted. the way out is not to pretend that you are not addicted. it is in accepting your current state and finding a way of escape.

Every gambler hopes to win so the idea of being addicted to that hope is unrealistic, though this is definitely what a gambling addict will say to make themselves feel better, plus it's also like some kind of an acceptable on what is actually happening to them, and to affirm that they don't plan on stopping their gambling addiction anytime soon, as long as they haven't won something big yet, if I meet someone like this I'd probably just let them be.

I think this is just another gambler who's fallen into the gambling trap and can't get out. In fact, I think people who hope to win big or make a lot of money at gambling are missing the point, when it's supposed to be nothing more than entertainment. And if you start chasing riches through gambling, I think you'll lose far more than you win. And that's precisely why it's a trap, all the money this gambler lost chasing hope, they could have saved, invested in say Bitcoin, and earned much, much more over the years while they're addicted to gambling.

Any sensible person that comes accross that writeup already sees the truth from the lie.

He is only deceiving himself, and the fact that he has such printing on his clothes means he's fought against the truth long enough that he's now so proud of living in denial. He has hope that gambling will pay him big which makes him gamble irresponsibility, there's so many rewarding careers paths to place such hope in, but he chose gambling. What a pathetic choice!

Well, let's hope he stops deceiving himself soon enough.
