It's a nice feel good story and actually surprising that they even bothered to talk about it later, because usually we wouldn't give a second thought to it - maybe it's the type of person who has fixed numbers that they've played for a lifetime. It's extremely lucky that they were able to find it as well, because after two days it could have ended up anywhere and become completely lost, even blown away by the wind. If winning the lottery is a one in a hundred million chance, then winning the lottery + throwing it away only to find it again is a one in a billion chance. I think the person who found it could not cash it out anyway because there would still be verification, so he had no choice but to return it. He would probably be rewarded as well.
The chance of the ticket still being intact and readable was very low, so the winner was extremely lucky.  

It does not need verification. The ticket is the proof that whoever has it is the owner. But I think the reason it was returned is because the refuge worker is a good person and was okay with the money he was promised, or he did not know the office where the original owner played the lottery to cash out the money.

This story should have the follow up reported too.
I want to know if he fulfilled his part of the promise or if he became greedy and failed to do so.
Secondly, I wonder if the lesson to learn here is one of patience or one of belief in good luck.
Thirdly, I am wondering if this lottery winner will end up being a statistic like the other in the past who became suddenly rich and squandered it on clubbing , women, and other wasteful pleasures or if they used it well.

I think there's a major problem with this story, if he bought a ticket with his lucky numbers, why did he throw it away without checking whether it was a winner? So he buys a ticket, marks his lucky numbers, and throws it away. This seems a little strange. And his family knows all his lucky numbers and keeps track of the lottery better than he does. That's also a bit dubious. But in any case, the story is beautiful and makes for a catchy headline. One more thing, if a garbage man found a winning ticket with a million euros, would he return the ticket to the player or keep it for himself?

This is why I don't immediately trash lottery tickets I bought before double or tripple checking it, I know the chance of winning from it is basically close to zero, but it wouldn't hurt to be sure whether your ticket actually lost or not.

Out of curiosity, I checked if Italy taxes lottery winnings, and they do a 20% tax on winnings above 500 euros, so the guy will take home 800k euros after taxes.

Yes, the person that found the ticket will be compensated. I do not know the reason some people like to throw away tickets, there have been many news like this that I have read about. Or they are making up to story for people to believe? But congrats to them that won such huge amount of money.

Sadly, how much the tip has not yet disclosed. It should be no less than 10% of total win after tax i guess. If it's less than it, how disrespectful the winner towards the workers who searched his 1m reward overnight.
The interesting part is that these workers celebrated their found by bought tickets, then they also won 50 bucks reward. What an inspirational story, and this deserves to be filmed.

Definitely, that guy owes those waste workers, giving them a share is not too much. He owns his money though and he's entitled to do all he want with the money but I hope he realise that without those people putting in some effort to recover the ticket, he could have missed his chance to.claim those money.

This is a man with his trademark where one person is happy then all will feel it and that's what the garbage management worker who found the ticket did.

With a large number of wins, of course there must be feedback given even though it may be the right of the winning owner but looking for a ticket for 2 days from a pile of garbage is not easy so if the winner thinks logically he will definitely give it as a form of appreciation to the person who helped find it especially he has signed an agreement to bear the cost of the search.

Better to fact check than to assume it's over. People make such decisions frequently at the end realising the mistake. It's better we develop the habit of verifying the facts before making any decisions. One thing I like is the system of how things are run. The waste company was ready to render help. In my country, that's the end. Even if they find it, they won't tell the family. They will keep it for themselves. That's the highest level of integrity. That's good.
