It is not a thing about hope, buddy. The lottery winner has to sign another declaration promising to settle the worker who found the lost ticket. In this world we live in, it is hard to find a faithful and genuine individual who will return a lost ticket worth millions. Species of men like that are truly rare. A tip wouldn't do justice, but appreciating him with a reasonable amount would do. Although it's not madatory but im literally saying what I'll do if I were the one who won the lottery.

Even before this story told by OP, locally, when printing betslips was still a thing before online gambling became popular, you would see young men and even women with rolls of betslip in the wallets and purses, all because they had fallen victim or had heard stories of their friends who fell victim to losing their wins because they were too quick to throw away their betslips, thinking they already lost.

What captured my heart and attention about this whole story is the fact that  he was able to get back his lost winning if not I just wonder what would have become of him assuming he didn't. That is a whole lot of money that can change his entire story for good if he can give it a perfect planning. Could've been their BIGGEST regret in life if they didn't found the ticket. But good thing they did! The workers also did a great job, not just for finding it, but also for being honest. Other people could've said they didn't find it and claimed the ticket as their own. So they really deserve a big tip for the hard work and for the honesty.

Well, I don't know how it is supposed to work there in the United Kingdom. But here in Venezuela the holder of the ticket is assumed to be the rightful winner of the money, lottery agencies here don't go out their place to check whether the person who bought the ticket is the same who is claiming the prize.
Also, lotteries here do not allow people to play numbers decided by them, numbers are generated randomly and sold as they are, so it would be very unlikely for someone to memorize their numbers if they had decided to discard their ticket.

Either way, We are supposed to be glad the rightful owner actually got his money in the end.

This is indeed how luck work in gambling, you could see the fingerprint in all the process. This also shows that the family have been playing some specific numbers every other time hoping that those numbers were drawn as the story pointed out that it was the family member that made him realise that their lucky numbers were drawn. Secondly, without luck being kn the side of the player, the ticket wouldn't have been found after that long duration of trashing it. It's actually nice to know that the lottery ticket was later discovered by the refuse disposer company and given back to the rightful owner or the ticket, because a million pounds is actually a huge sum of money which if it were some companies, they would have denied ever seeing it and going behind the owners back to cashout the reward anonymously. But instead they decided to be professional and did what was right, and this speaks good about the disposal company. And secondly, this should also serve as a lesson to other gamblers to never be in a haste to discard their tickets early when they have not fully confirmed that they lost their bet, because just as what happened to this gambler can repeat itself any day too. Luck knocked twice on this gambler's door.

I always check at least three times, marking each number when I get one right, which is difficult. But I'm terrified of it happening to me. Something I don't cling to is having "favorite" numbers; another fear I have is that one day I won't bet on them and they'll end up being drawn specifically on this day.
