I joined the forum in 2023, sometime in the middle or early part of the year, after becoming interested in crypto especially Bitcoin. At the time I was surprised to find an online forum filled with so much data, information and knowledgeable people who were willing to share their knowledge about crypto technology for free.It was a place where everyone could share their opinions, ideas, thoughts and contributions helping to build what felt like a great community without being afraid of being censored by those in power. Everyone had the opportunity to grow from the lowest rank to the highest, as long as they continued to make meaningful contributions to the forum. Years have passed and in such a short time this wonderful place I once considered a home now seems almost deserted with fewer contributions, more low quality posts and repetitive replies. It feels like the walls that were never there before are now being built faster than anyone could have imagined. Since the first official mixer ban was introduced, we have seen that it did not only cause mixers, sponsors, and related businesses to leave the forum. Many important visitors who used to contribute useful information about privacy also gradually disappeared. It is easy to understand why. They no longer had much reason to stay or perhaps they simply moved on to other things where there were fewer restrictions on the areas they were interested in.Fast forward to today, and the forum seems to have moved on. The walls built around mixers were created to protect the forum, but now it feels like similar walls are being built around other interesting parts of the community. The most recent reimplementation of the signature ban was meant to help filter out users who had little real engagement or were repeatedly making low quality and repetitive posts. So far, it seems that nutildah has been doing a good job with the implementation and I am not in anyway against it. However, we have mostly focused on the positive side of this implementation without giving enough thought to its possible negative effects. So far, it seems that many of the targeted users are those who mainly post in the gambling section and have little engagement with other boards. They may not earn many merits, but that does not necessarily mean they make no valuable contribution. Some of them may contribute to the gambling industry and its community in other ways that are not easily measured by merits or post counts. This makes me wonder whether while trying to remove low quality activity, we might also be pushing away some users whose contributions simply do not fit the usual definition of valuable participation on the forum. I'll quote buwaytress because he gave a very nice perspective that I think we just haven't thought about. Hey nutildah, we probably have not interacted properly before. I know I'm absent in Meta unless tagged (doesn't happen much) and tend not to because I don't know enough to say things fairly but I'm here to say a word for a couple of people who've been sigbanned. I'll try to keep it short!
Firstly, good job on the effort (I understand it's focused on gambling sub); long overdue. Used to report users all the time. Saw it didn't do much. Had to self-moderate threads just to keep things legible. If this helps, I'm all for it.
I do feel there has to be an adjustment in the initial screening -- I'm making a big assumption here, I realise, that the screening is what caught them in the net, based on the two users I know who've been sigbanned. Looking up their profiles on your tool, their main weakness seems to be a lack of post diversity and lack of merit.
I'm going to offer my take. I see the gambling sub housing an important part of the 'economy': the paid pools and events, in particular, where people actually pay money for sports related events, which can and usually does include gambling on sponsor sites. Some of the most active users there actually only use the forum for these events. And so, can appear to be posting only in the same megathreads daily. I'm assuming this is what causes them to have their content deemed repetitive or not in diverse topics enough.
This also partially explains the merit... or lack of. I've always struggled with merit. I generally want to reward well-thought out posts and Bitcoin-centric ones, I suppose most people do. But perhaps it is also okay to view highly-engaged genuine accounts with financial skin staked in the forum economy favourably, without a mandatory bias on merits... why?
Becase they are valuable. They keep the events going with fees. They're a part of the forum economy. They may wear sigs from different casinos, and if so, are seen in these threads by actual gamblers, serving the sig sponsors well. If I were a campaign manager, these accounts would be the first I'd seek out, so my product gets the eyes I want the most. These threads they post in also tend to be self-moderated or heavily (manually) reported when there are shitposters who clearly don't gamble. Almost like a self-governed subset.
Of these accounts, I've known one for years, he's in my group team in a gambling event, and joins my annual Champions League pool. I was really surprised to learn he was sigbanned. Perhaps it was deserved, under the current parameters of your tool and designs of this effort.
But I would ask to think about these users in gambling. I might consider that asking such accounts to diversify their content would actually direct them to change their behaviour artificially, posting in subs they aren't actually interested in. To achieve content diveristy and perhaps gain merits.
If this is indeed the desired outcome... should it be?
So, What's My Point? With so many restrictions being introduced, I believe the forum could have less engagement, traffic, and discussion in the years to come. Also, I was also going through the Beginners & Help board and honestly what I saw was quite concerning. I know the moderator is doing his job and I am not saying he is doing a bad job. But what is the long term effect of locking threads so quickly? The first many pages of the Beginners & Help board are filled with locked threads, many of which did not even have the opportunity to develop into meaningful discussions. If this continues, the board could become less useful over time. New users or visitors of the forum may look at the board and feel that it is a place where they cannot freely ask questions or discuss things that concern them about cryptocurrency. I believe the beginning of these kinds of walls can eventually become the downfall of an otherwise great community. The Beginners & Help board should be a place where newcomers can comfortably ask questions, learn, and express themselves.. When people constantly feel restricted or attacked in a place they believe should allow open discussion, they may simply stop participating and move on. If these restrictions continue without considering their long term effects, there is a possibility that over the years some valuable members may lose interest in the forum and leave. And yes, I know some people will say that it doesn't matter because the real members will stay . Who exactly are the real members? People with alot of earned trust? People with a lot of earned merits? Or those on the technical discussion boards? Let's not be ridiculous.. I always like to use Bitcoin as an example because we are in a Bitcoin community. Bitcoin itself gives us an interesting example of why openness matters. Its growth was not based on constantly restricting who could participate or what they could build. The permissionless nature of the network allowed people to experiment, contribute, and find their own ways to participate.. Before major decisions that can significantly affect the community are implemented i think there should be more public discussion, polls, or some form of community feedback. A decision that affects everyone should where possible involve the people who make up the community. That approach would make more sense to alot of people especially because Satoshi created a system that showed us the value of decentralization, participation, and allowing people to contribute without unnecessary restrictions. Apologies for the long read, just Airing my view of these things. The earlier we look at it from a different perspective, the better for the forum.

Things were fairly okay in the beginners and help board, until this post in quote below was made, which made the moderator - Mitchel became more aggressive in moderation. - Firstly the begginers and help board is a major board on the forum and as a result it can be spammed most times due to the multiple posts being created in it.
imo, the Beginners and help board does not need super moderation. It is a board where all sorts of help are been sought, it is a board for beginners and a learning ground for new comers. So it should be the board with the highest level of tolerance. In some forums they restrict newbies to a certain board for some times for them to learn. I support Op here, the moderation there should be lenient.

So, What's My Point? With so many restrictions being introduced, I believe the forum could have less engagement, traffic, and discussion in the years to come.
I believe Theymos considered this as a possibility and decided the pros outweigh the cons. Over the years that I have been a member of the forum, there have been several threads about whether forum members would continue to post as much if campaigns were banned from the forum. And the recent development has shown that most accounts that received a signature ban either reduced their posting or stopped posting altogether. But what is the long term effect of locking threads so quickly? The first many pages of the Beginners & Help board are filled with locked threads, many of which did not even have the opportunity to develop into meaningful discussions. If this continues, the board could become less useful over time.
I understand your points, however, in my experience I find that many newbies do not bother to read the pinned threads before creating new topics. I am yet to see a thread that was prematurely locked by the mod. If the OP has got his answer, is there any need of keeping the thread open for users to repeat what’s been said before? Thanks for the answers, friends, I think I'll buy a Samsung s24, because I think the iPhone is too restrictive for the owner of this smartphone. And you are very right to note that we need to be vigilant. Thank you for taking the time to discuss my topic.
OP was satisfied, we are now a few pages further, so locking it

I feel like I'm actually pretty lenient. There are a few more topics I would like to lock right now, but I feel the topics are still somewhat relevant (and the posts in them aren't complete nonsense for signature payment yet). A lot of topics that get created are just rehashes of things that have already been discussed multiple times, so once the question is answered, it is only fair to lock it (either by OP or me/the staff). Lots of the topics you highlighted were moved due to being in the wrong place/low quality/etc. I did make a general thread for crypto scams, attacks and malware to actually make it easier to find relevant information, which did mean that a lot of topics in the last few pages got locked, since they were already older and no longer relevant (which always happens when general topics get created). Some of these topics I didn't even close, but the OPs did. Normally I do clean up MOVED topics after a while, since they do clutter the view, so I'll do another sweep right now. I could also move all the topics that are listed in [General] Crypto scams, attacks and malware to Archival, but that also feels like a waste right now. You might disagree with me, that's fine, but when nobody was moderating the subsection, it was a account farm/signature spamfest. I can tell you that if Lauda were still here, B&H would've been moderated much more harshly and strictly. EDIT: Next time, just mention my name. Not sure why you didn't? EDIT2: Just cleaned up a bunch of the MOVED topics and most of them are either low quality ( mistakes all newbies make part IIII) and just legit in the wrong section (altcoin/technical/wallet/etc).

What I think was that there was a plan for another moderator to come out from the same local board, but the plan was unsuccessful. [Solved] Add a Moderator or Description to Beginners & Help boardThese were what I posted about beginners and help but the opportunity some people saw will not let them think the way I was thinking about the situation at the time: As I strongly believe most of the "new" accounts posting on that board are alt accounts of more established users, I would moderate the shit out of that board but I might not be as fair minded and welcoming as those who have more experience posting & reporting there. Maybe your orientation will change if you become a moderator because moderators are giving guidelines on how to moderate. If I should not be self-centered, the board is still having some good posts. But just that some people do not visit the board, thinking it is full of shit or probably because of what they know already and thinking it is no more new. Do not forget it is existing for beginners and help. Have you made a lot of reports in the Beginners & Help section and they were left unhandled?
If I should be the one to answer your question as I do report often, most reports are handled and this board is one of them. Moderators are doing a good work as they also handle the report as fast as possible. What I think about this is that Churchillvv is not reporting unwanted posts which makes him not know how the reports are handled. But it has a moderator now and it is more moderated. You people should blend. I think I like the board more now despite that it is more moderated. You are doing a great work. The number of reports that I have on the board significantly reduced when you started moderating the board. I mean before I report, you would have probably done what is right.

Most important lines has also been highlighted and so on I trust you've also expressed about the experience of many on this platform. This forum is one genuine online forum that serves as educative means for enthusiasts to learn about bitcoin and crypto and feel the learning processes very interactive for easy going while it's a privilege to be a user because you'll have users and enthusiasts with highly professional knowledge to share their ideals with the public including you as a newbie for free. At some point, when i was a newbie stage, I used to describe the platform as a decentralized network because the officials and admins doesn't have to be too tough on members. The forum is a place where some people find worth to build carries in but your relevance depends of the qualities of what you offers.

As I previously said in the other Topic that suggested a full ban of signature campaigns ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5586934.msg66901294#msg66901294), there is no action theymos could have taken with out having consequences. Even not taking any action would have had its own consequences too. I do not know if this has to do any thing at all with the recent more aggressive moderation but I did suggest this in the same reply, I would start by advising Staff to start cleaning up Topics. As in. It happens a lot that I see a Topic such as 'Is Bitcoin centralized?' where at least 10 percent of the replies are the definition of Bitcoin or some thing that is clearly not a real answer to the Topic that was started. I would get these out as they clearly do not even offer any useful resource or opinion to the subject discussed. If these people got their posts removed, it would become WAY harder to reach post counts so less people will be motivated to run 10 spamming alternative accounts for campaigns considering it would take a lot more time to try and reach the minimum count, and in consequence managers will kick out those not being able to hit the quota and even select people based on how many posts they had deleted by Staff.
And I personally believe Bitcoin Talk IS more clean after the more aggressive moderation in combination with the signature bans. Anyway. I opened the moved, deleted and locked Topics on the first page of that Board and I do not see why you see them being locked, deleted or moved as a problem. For example, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5590813.0 has been moved to the Trashcan for low quality. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5590790.0 has been deleted for duplicating a subject discussion Mitchell made a 'General Thread' for one week ago. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5584141.0 has been locked. It discusses the eternal 'do not purchase scam Cryptocurrencies' subject since May. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5588522.0 has been locked. It discusses since a Telegram scam since almost one month ago. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5589711.0 has been locked. It discusses how Newbies should use the Search function of Bitcoin Talk. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5583805.0 has been locked. It discusses an investment strategy around Dollar Cost Averaging since May. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5588707.0 has been locked. It was someone who asked for help about one month ago. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5589106.0 has been locked. It had four pages of discussions about Android versus iPhones. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5582275.0 has been locked. It discusses how dangerous it is to mention your worth or interest in Bitcoin since May. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5589707.0 has been locked. It discusses why self custody is important. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5589016.0 has been locked. It discusses preventing scams. All the discussions locked in the first page of the 'Beginners & Help' Board are discussions that I have seen one month ago, half an year ago, an year ago or more. Again and again. They are repetitive and for no real reason. I even suggested 'Mega Topics' before which would run in pretty much the same way the 'General Thread' Mitchell made for scam Topics. I still believe they are the best solution, How about introducing Bitcoin Talk mega Topics. All existing and new Topics created on overly discussed subjects such as Gold versus Bitcoin, Bitcoin centralization, will Bitcoin replace Fiat et cetera should be locked down and archived except one, preferably the largest one. This solves multiple issues in one. We will not have 100 Topics on the same subject every month, replies made in that mega Topic would not be counted for signature campaigns and it forces only real, productive discussion around Bitcoin Talk.
Bitcoin Talk is a lot more clean. It is a lot more difficult to burst post, spam et cetera when you can not post the same opinion for the hundredth time on the same subject that has been discussed ever since Bitcoin Talk exists. And that is good. And it will be a good incentive for more useful discussions to start.

They should bring valid topics, their post will not be deleted. Also about the threads that are locked, most threads on the board supposed to be locked. After few posts others are repetitions.

I didn't see the need to since the idea behind the topic wasn't about you. I just pointed out the beginners and help board so something should be done about the many locked topics on those front pages.
Understood. I can see the point you're trying to make. I think Mia Chloe made the same point about the moved topics I left behind in the past. It is a bit sad right now, but it will slowly fade to the background, since I really don't want to move the topics that got locked because of the new general thread. The warnings were good to have and Google will index them in B&H and not in Archival (IIRC). All we need now are newbies asking real questions.

It’s quite unfortunate that what you are describing isn’t just a day decision by the Admin or any of the staff but an accumulated reaction from all the misconduct of so many of us in the forum. Perhaps in recent times I have been able to observe that the admin might not have it in mind to set some restrictions but some of the forum members who are dissatisfied come up every now and then with a new regulation suggestion here in meta board, to be implemented by the admin, at the end of the day I think that we did it, whatever we see here today we did it to ourselves. I mean how can we force the administration to keep implementing rules that satisfy us without considering the affect effects and when it starts hitting we are still the one to complain.
However, I admit that some of the threads I see moderated (moved, deleted, archived etc) are seriously worth being moderated, how can someone who previously contributed to a thread that said bitcoin is this and that, start a new thread saying this and that is bitcoin!!! Of what use is that?
However op you have a serious concern in terms of the futuristic effect of all this tightening regulations coming up gradually, it may not be obvious that we are going in to a stage of decline in participation but if it persist then the freedom what allows for traffic might be reduced and hence the attraction to the forum might become lesser as time passes by.
Although having reasonable conversation or discussion is priority over traffic but however I am pretty sure admin knows the impact of the gambling industry in the forum traffic which is why it’s allowed to house some kind of discussion even though it’s slightly clean sometimes but still given the room to allow for growth, however the sig ban is what threatens the idea but I’m sure admin knows this always and when it’s due time he will figure out how to manage the situation.
Edit: I did suggest moderation and specific merit source for B&H back in time without the knowledge that the board had one but the name wasn’t written like it is now and I believe after that thread Mitchell became more aggressive with the moderation which is a good one and I loved it more.

I don't think there'd be a need for the moderator to lock those threads if there was valuable content in them, but if we keep complaining that there is too spam in the forum, the mod would have to step up and if I'm being honest, the Beginners &Help board contains lots of spam. I know how painful and discouraging it can be to see that your thread got locked especially if it was opened by a newbie but if we're being fair, some of them don't bother to use the search button or read more than they post, cause that way they can know if the topic they want to talk about has been discussed before.

I still believe they are the best solution,
For the same reason you aren't encouraged to wake up very old thread and when you want to post on them you're advised to start a new topic, it's important that some important topics gets revisited since it helps real newbies learn when they visit the board. In some of the topics that are currently locked, there's a possibility that a genuine newbie wants to ask a question in line with that discussion, but cannot since it's locked already and when they go ahead to create new threads, it might be seen as repetition and discarded. I feel a better way is deleting those replies that seems as spam and just completion of post count and allow some of these threads to attempt entertaining the curiosity of real newbies. When spammers see that their posts are always deleted and doesn't count, they'll be less encouraged to continue spamming. I don't like a lot of topics locked in the B&H section, it's very discouraging to a genuine newbie. This is where I agree with Hatchy. I'm suggesting Mitchell should find a way to allow threads that he feels questions have been answered to live a bit longer, while he moderates spam on them.

If you carefully read most of the locked threads in B&H you will notice a lot of similarities in most of the threads...sometimes I do ask if the genuine newbies are the one asking a similar questions...or they have another motive that's unknown to us why they're making a similar thread...
I'm of the opinion that a thread that looks similar should be locked in order to avoid repetition of answers or suggestions, but anyone that's innovative should be allow to be running until we get good response before it will be locked...

BitMixList was created because of the mixer ban and it's doing just fine.

In some of the topics that are currently locked, there's a possibility that a genuine newbie wants to ask a question in line with that discussion, but cannot since it's locked already and when they go ahead to create new threads, it might be seen as repetition and discarded. There's just a thin line between not bumping old threads and creating a new topic instead of searching the forum. If a user wants to create a new post, they search and finds a similar post, read through the thread, they'll see an answer, because before a thread is locked, it should have exhausted its value. But if the user does not receive an answer, they are free to bump the thread if not locked, or create a new one if locked. The newly created one will be quickly locked if the user receives an answer because it is already a duplicate thread. I feel a better way is deleting those replies that seems as spam and just completion of post count and allow some of these threads to attempt entertaining the curiosity of real newbies. Bruv, did you consider the moderator here? It takes a lot to read all the replies in a thread to determine and delete individual spam posts. The mods have life outside the forum, they don't have to read all the threads even the ones of no interest just because they want to spot and discover spam replies. We help by reporting.

But what is the long term effect of locking threads so quickly? The first many pages of the Beginners & Help board are filled with locked threads, many of which did not even have the opportunity to develop into meaningful discussions. If this continues, the board could become less useful over time.
Threads with malwares can be deleted very quickly whenever admins, moderators see such threads by themselves or whenever they receive reports from community members. With threads that are pointless, they can be trashed immediately. If threads are not too useless but only repeating other threads without nothing new or extra helpful information, they can be locked. I don't know why locking or deleting such threads can receive complaints, it's actually good moderation. Q: How do I delete/lock my own thread(s) when I no longer need them? A: On the top right of your post is a delete button. You can delete threads if nobody has seen them. Otherwise, just click "Lock topic" link at the bottom left.
It's for topic starter but if moderator see a thread is no longer helpful or need further discussion, the moderator can lock it.

Real beginners will first of all read, go through the sections, and read again, and only then will they find out why there is such an assessment of posts as merit on the forum and, in general, why they need to raise an account here. Would anyone object to this saying if I put emphasis on the word "real beginner"? But what is happening in reality? People come to earn money; this is what distinguishes the "real" from the fake newcomer. Again, you🫵, who are against deleting recurring topics or topics that were allegedly not fully discussed, can deceive us, but you cannot deceive yourself. Let me quote the former "beginner" and his explanation of why people write when creating new topics in the beginner section. Do you know that some new users do not actually create a thread because they want to pass and information, ask questions or learn. They actually create threads to make their username popular or known. Someone in this category will create a thread in any slight given opportunity.
Now all newbies from Nigeria are starting their "work experience" in the politics section in order to gain activity. Another section is the gambling section, again, to get statistics on future company signatures. It is very easy to track these "newbies" who are not even close to "real", and creating empty and repetitive answers in the beginner section is not a way for them to study but a way to raise their already over a dozen alternative accounts. Therefore, OP, once again, all your "new" people are visible in the politics section, in the buy-sell topic and, of course, in the local section. Explain to them the importance of reading, not expressing your opinion, and creating topics (recurring regularly) that are not new, not once.

I will respond to some posts here without quoting them because it is useless to make several quotes in the same reply. First at OP, welcome to sicily. I have a reason to call the forum like that Second, locking useless and repetitive topics is something that should be taken aside from making the life difficult here. Third, please remove your paid signature when you want to see all signature campaign being banned. Myself want to see a temporarily ban on signature for like 6 months and see where this forum is heading to.

Instead of believing and depending on your feelings, you should provide quantitative data for better comparison and actual data that would help analyze whether that is really the case.
I suggest that you get the pre- and post-signature banning, as well as the mixer banning.
In that way, the results can be more objective, not just based on opinions, but on facts.
