It was Venezuela in June that earthquake of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 hit that killed over 6000 people, but now it happened in Colombia. The earthquake that hit Venezuela was felt in Colombia but now it happened in Colombia. You can see that both countries are neighbors.



20 people have died already after the magnitude-7.4 earthquake hit Colombia. I wish the number of people that died will not increase but when earthquake occur, the number of death that will be on the news will be increasing.

You're right, @OP; the number has now increased to 47. Many buildings collapsed, and people would be trapped under rubble. Rescue workers would have to keep searching for both the living and the dead. Many people have family members and friends. The country needs all the support it can get.

We are very lucky in my location that we don't experience natural disasters like earthquakes. We also have our own challenges that we face.

The collapsing of buildings indicate that earth quake was very powerful. We are helpless in front of natural disasters but the world must come forward at this crucial hour and help Colombian government to come out of this disaster. These strength earthquakes are very rare in Columbia. These major events all around the world are either a bad omen or there is some major underlying factor at play. My sympathies to all the poor people in Columbia and hope those missing can be found under the rubble in a timely manner.

Not even the strongest building close to the epicenter would survive an earthquake of that magnitude. The survivors were lucky to have survived because they were a distance away from the epicenter. An area where the damage is felt more.

I also heard about this disaster and it is disheartening, many people lost their lives unexpectedly and I watched the moment a story building collapsed helplessly while people are still inside, it was such a magnitude range of earthquake experience, if you are in a country that never something like this before, then always have everything takes to appreciate nature because some of these natural disasters uh unpredictable and cannot be prevented as well, condolence all lives s that were lost as a result of this natural disaster.

You are right the number of death has increased a lot from when it was recording 20 person because this link has already listed up to 110 confirm persons who died, although I don't no if is even more than that because with this magnitude it could actually caused a lot of disaster and already so many high capacity buildings are down considering how many persons that might be leaving there. Actually is unfortunate that earthquakes are not stop able because it has been the problem of a lot of countries in the world because of the life it always claimed whenever it happens, is sad to see what had befallen on Colombia.

This is really a very sad news for the Colombian people at this critical time of the year, because I just saw on BBC and CNN that the death has been raised to over 132 confirmed dead at 12hours ago, which means between this 12hours, I'm sure the number might have increased more. However, it's just sad that earthquake seems to be very common in Columbia, because 3years ago, most especially by this time August 17th 2023 in North Andes side of Columbia, and now August 10th 2026, another big earthquake have been reported to have hit Columbia again, which is really sad. And at this moment, this is the right time the rest American need to come to the aid of the Columbians people, because natural disaster of this magnitude is not what anybody planned or could run away from it. So my deepest condolences goes to the families of the people who lost their loved ones during this earthquake.

This is not the time to blame the government at all, there is no government in the world (including the US) that can know when earthquake is a about to happen. They can only know if earthquake can happen in a country but they can not know when the earthquake will happen.

Most countries natural disaster are not new, so they should know in Colombia that another earthquake that is of high magnitude will come one day. I do not know the reason such countries are having storey buildings unless the building is constructed to be very strong and withstand earthquake. Those people that are in no storey building can easily goo outside and stay safe.

Earthquake is one of the worst natural disaster to happen in a country. I just wished there was a lasting solution to this earthquake. This disaster has killed millions of people for the past few years and it keep encroaching and number increasing. Who knows where nest it will hit. I can't just emagine someone sleeping peacefully and he is buried together with his building trapped Benet the earth. What more can be worst than that. It's very rare for an earthquake of such magnitude to hit without lots of casualties following it's wake. My heart goes out to those families who have lost their loved ones. It was just June that Venezuela got hit by twin earthquakes and even though there were no serious damages felt by Colombia, it's still enough to put fear in the hearts of people then this has to happen.

We can also manage somehow to control this threats if it has been noted that the texture of the earth plate in the location could be harmed if the ground is overloaded with too much heavyweight structures.
Some countries that are vulnerable to this disaster sanctions individuals through urban plans so that the rocks beneath does not get stuck which in the circumstances causes outbreaks.
It should be possible that the both affected countries of the earthquake shares same continental crust that is why when it happened to one, it affects the neighbors.

The magnitude of that which happened in Venezuela was higher than that in Colombia which is why the disastrous rate was also higher because they shares common boundaries.
And in cases like this in the news,other neighboring countries could be a threat because the vibrations of the rock as it cracks of slips could affect others but we hope it ends their because earthquake is never a thing that is wished to happen to anyone because the damage and victims will always be expected.

These are natural disasters that take the life of people, sometimes I ask myself why is all this happening?
My heart is heavy for those that have lost a family member because of this earthquake, losing a family member or a friend is not actually easy. It is always heartbroken.
I thought they have discovered what usually prevent earthquake from happening or a detector that usually alert people to move out immediately before an earthquake happens.
is it that they are use it or it does not work in all occasions or they are not using it in Colombia?

It is rather painful that earthquake is a natural occurrence and cannot be stopped no matter how much damage it causes. But there are a few steps that could be taken to reduce the impact of earthquakes:

1. Preparing emergency escape route and evacuation plan in dire situations.
2. Monitoring seismic activities to understand the gravity of a possible earthquake.
3. The use of earthquake warning systems.

This is not a solution to earthquake but a little measure that could be implemented to reduce the impact of earthquakes. Countries prone to earthquakes attack should make preparations before it happens to reduce the number of casualties and save more lives.

There was just an earthquake in Venezuela where so many people lost their lives, people haven’t gotten over that one, and something of this magnitude is happening again in Columbia, I saw the Video on the internet it was so scary, I don’t know what is happening with this natural disasters that keeps hitting the South Americans, there must be a reason why this keeps happening in that region, there would be rescuers searching for both dead and alive people that are trapped under the rubble, I sympathize with everyone affected, and may the souls of those killed rest in peace.

Just like you said earthquakes are natural so even if they no what is causing it or why is happening they will not be able to stop it from occurring because if it was possible a country that lost many people from their first experience will never allow it it to destroy again, however based on different scientists that studies all the natural disasters we have but I think Seismologists are the scientists who focus on earthquake and still they wouldn't no when an earthquake will happen so actually there are nature that is above human understanding even if there are many technology in the world.
