I think a  basic approach is like with having metamask on the browser extension that has a phishing detection feature. But don't rely too much on it because there is a potential that it can't detect an actual phishing website. One practice that I do is that if I am not familiar with the website that I've visited due to curiosity, I'm leaving and closing the browser immediately. It's not too technical but it had probably saved me from a lot of trouble. And the common approach that you need to practice OP, "don't trust, verify".

The first thing I do is to look at the "https" and the "connection is secure," with a padlock in front of it.



Then, as anything you are putting your money in deserves enough background checks (because even if the site is secure, what about the integrity of the people behind it?) This makes sense but Bitcointalk archive does not gives you everything about the website, you should use who is domain dot com, this tells you more info about the website, when the domain was registered and when it's going to expire. It will reveal some other info but sometimes are irrelevant because a scammer don't use their real information to register domain but the date of registration is very important, a website domain registered in less than few months are most likely to be scam.

You can add blockers on your list, this helps you get rid of annoying adds. Some websites have way of hiding annoying ads on the website, some can contain malicious links and you wouldn't know anything about them. If you use adblock, it helps you get rid of the annoying ads. You can get browser like Brave, it's good on mobile and pc. Some people use extension for their pc chrome, they are useful.

Lastly, don't entertain links on Dm be it from the forum or outside this place, that's one way you get phished.

Not all scam sites out there or proposed scams are going to happen have targeted Bitcointalk forum for their activities and also suspicion on all the time for their accusations. Scams are not regulated here and you just have to be very careful, check and recheck to confirm that you’re not dealing with an already accused site, others ways are also out their to legitimately select best sites for use. Phishing site attempt is one of the ways victims are lured, don’t fall for it. Not all links are meant to be clicked, especially those that are suspicious, it is already a sign of a red flag, so it is better to avoid them also. When the offers are looking too good to be true, it is better you avoid them because money isn’t made overnight, it is through hard work and sleepless nights.

HTTPS is necessary but through this we cannot say whether a website is a phishing website or an original one. Well, for a newbie, they can't easily verify if the site is safe or not.
For me, as a newbie, I am going to check it first with VirusTotal to make sure the site doesn't contain any malicious code when accessing it and then check the site if it's offering something related to crypto investment or something related to seed; it's better to stop accessing the site.
And the 3rd thing to make sure the site is safe: you can make a thread here on the forum and ask if this site is safe or not. I'm sure everyone here knows more than a newbie.

Mate, Wow you have really reminded me newbie days of mine, haha. Because i still remember the same kind of situation in which i was also stucked. And what you said in your 3rd point i did the same in those days. I discussed about that site with the Bitcoin community and believe me that was a very helpful act of mine. So, what the website was about or offering, that site was offering a really fair amount in Bitcoin that i also was suspected or surprised at that time. I asked about that site from Bitcoin community on this forum and they guide me to the right way. This is why i always think is that it is a very good thing to consult first with experts before tested, trying, using any random crypto service. Because the fact is that your one mistake can lead you to the horrible verge which you have to regret later.

I'm fairly certain you can do the same with uBlock. Even the default ones usually comes with some domain blacklist for well-known phishing sites. You can also import new list focused on crypto if you wanted to add more. There's even a dedicated website for finding those lists.

Then again, most crypto-related extensions these days come with their own custom blocker for malicious sites. Sometimes being too aggressive so it can mislead people if they're not careful.

The most important thing is you have to know what the website is offering you. If there is something high-return or something free offered, then proceed with caution. Most of the people lost funds on such websites.

Other things like SSL, domains, and reputation also matter for crypto users. Have to make sure you are visiting the real and original website; don’t trust Google Search anyway. You just need to avoid being greedy; then probably you will be safe from a lot of scams. Remember, there is nothing free in the world; there is no money-making machine.

Websites like mempool.space and Bitcoin Wiki have been around forever and are established to the point that you wouldn’t think twice when clicking on a link to those sites. For sites that are less established, I don’t worry all that much. I just use common sense and know what to look for to avoid getting phished. You have to be specific, like what kind of sites, exchanges, swaps, mixers, wallets, etc. Either way, the method should be the same. If you are using a site to download something, use some service, etc., you must check if it is real. You don't know code? Don't worry. Famous and mostly used sites already have a lot of data for newbies where they can learn which is real and which is fake.

I won't depend a lot on the TLS security checks, but they are a good factor. I will prefer to check the traffic first to see if the site is real, the domain history, community reviews, and will try to access the site from the real sources, like from their ANNs or from the publicly available directories like Bitlist, etc.

You can also ask AI. It will probably provide a real site link, but still double check it before giving any personal details or attaching your main wallets.

You are on bitcoin forum atleast, so wherever website you plan to visit you can just ask on here, you don't have to check because that's not a good way of verifying, tell us which website you are trying to visit, if it's Bitcoin related you can get the official link from members on here and by the way phishing doesn't just work the way you put it.

A neighbor who after bought his first bitcoin was fond of jumping over any crypto related Internet news due to impulsive and he wasn't knowledgeable enough to understand that it's not all crypto related websites that may be genuined not until he jumped over a spoofed phishing website that requires him to update his wallets seed phrase of which there's nothing as such.
He said to be skeptical about it and had to enquire and was later find out that the web site was cloning a legitimate site he usually gets updates.
So after he checked in the Url, he find out that there was a look alike and a lesson was also learnt therein.

I don't think it make sense for him to ask the forum anytime he want to visit a website, it will looks like spam and it will be like he is not doing research. A basic search of Google search will help him alot, you can't learn everything from this forum, you can learn more from other places. I have seen some information from reddit that I couldn't get from this forum. There is more to explore if you check outside the forum than you will learn if he focus on the forum.

Anything he needs is on the internet, he just need to learn them and update himself. There are some websites that he think he knows that may even be outdated and some may not be going again. I don't think there is anything complicated with searching for website except if it's the one that will involve exchange of coins and by that, we have the popular ones, he just need to watch out for the ones that are the phishing websites.

What kind of sites you want to visit, because sites related to Bitcoin or crypto are very numerous. But for sites that require you to register usually only Exchange sites or trading sites that require KYC. Local Exchange sites are certainly enough to believe.

But if the site you are visiting is another site that requires a list or requires you to connect with your Bitcoin wallet or that requires personal data, it is better to stay away. I would not visit a site that still has to collect user data for no compelling reason such as the trading market.

There are many ways that can be done to check fake sites like that, especially by looking at the Feedback from the site and see how much the domain is made and whether it is not related to other frauds. you can also share it with the forum for analysis by others and will probably provide their analysis.
