Parents are to serve as guides are not decision maker to their children's future career ambitions. Just as I have said earlier, we can try to advise on what is necessary for them to know, but it is late for them to decide whether to choose a particular career path or not.

We could even be wrong sometimes as parents; every potential should be left for those involved to discover it by themselves, and our own rule has parent is to only put them through the right way to take in being successful in whatever thing they have decided to go for.

The most important thing for me here is whether the boy has actually made this decision of his own free will. However if he wants to make esports a career, he should not just see it as gaming, but as a real plan.  Another thing is that esports has really grown, but a professional gaming career is very uncertain and there is a risk of burnout and early retirement. And it is natural to feel sad, because parents imagined a certain future for their child. But instead of ruining the relationship, you can give a time limit to see if he is really able to earn money or make professional progress with his skills. At the same time if he continues his studies, he will have other options even if he has to leave esports in the future.

I've always had a question, why are they considered sports? you don't struggle physically.

The first thing that I don't understand is why do parents dream of their children getting into a specific line of profession right after they are born? I mean, it shouldn't really matter as long as they are doing something which isn't illegal or immoral, and being an esport athlete is not a bad thing at all, and if it's about the money, then I must say that a person who becomes an esport athlete or even a gaming streamer or content creator, they can eventually make more money than someone who is a doctor.

So for me, I would never have a dream about my child or children becoming a specific thing such as a doctor or an engineer when they grow up, all I would want is for them to succeed in their lives, and as long as they achieve that in their lives, I will be happy and I would never think of disowning my children just because they didn't choose the line of profession that I wanted them to choose, after all, it's their life and it should be their choice based on their interests.

It is not an uncommon thing, especially in Asian countries where parents dictate most part of their children's lives in the way their parents want it to be. And a parent knows what is good for their kids but they can't decide the ultimate factor they can be a good educator and let the kid choose what is best for them.

Esport Athlete? That's a new term for me. Roll Eyes

Well for me I would say that the parent should allow the child to decide for him or herself, I know they agreed that the child will become a doctor when he grow up but they should know that there's always a change of mind. moreover the child was still small when they made this agreement so he may or may not stick to it because as at that time they may not have the ability to make the right choice so whatever the parents says will be 100% correct in their own view. Of course I have seen a lot of parents dreaming of thier children getting into a specific line of profession but when they grow up you will see them doing a different thing, I frequently advice parents never to dream of anything for thier children, let them grow up and find what they think is best for them to do.

Your dream was for your son to grow up and become a doctor, you've talked about it and he agreed but somewhere down the line he started a Esport Career, he started playing video games on live.

Like what the likes of Cai And other popular YouTubers are doing, what will you do? Force in to stop or disown him? Or generally just feel sad about it?

This is the case of a family member right now, his only son out of 4 children choose to abandon doctor for online gaming streamer/ Esport Career, and the mother and father had so much hope in him until now, what would you do in this case?

I've tried my best, telling them how Esport is so big today but they don't just get it,  simply because they don't believe that anyone who sit and play games has no future.

Basically, both of them feel they’ve made the right decision. His parents believe that a career as a doctor is the best choice, he’ll have it all, from a good income to respect in the eyes of his family and the community. It’s a very noble profession because it helps so many people, that’s more or less what his parents think.

Meanwhile, he is convinced that a career in esports is the better choice. The only thing he can do is convince his parents by speaking very persuasively, explaining why they should support him and painting a picture of his future so that they will understand. After all, parents just want their children to have a good life.

Parents of to be more careful in deciding for their children, instead, they should serve as a guide and mentor them in the right way to know between various choices to make in career, while the final decision should come from the children, because they all have right to decide for themselves once the attain a particular stage in life, it will get to a certain stage whereby you can only advise them but they will only have to decide what to do after considering for the alternatives.

Every parent wants their child to live a much better life than them and achieve great success in life. It is very natural for parents to have demands on their children. However, I think it is the responsibility of parents to help their children in the direction they want to take their career. I think if a child wants to choose their own career and move forward with that goal, then it is very important for parents to support and encourage their children.

Of course, if he is capable of a good career for the future, then it is very important to guide him in that direction. Parents certainly want the best for their child, but sometimes while doing good, it turns out to be bad for the child, the parents do not understand that. According to OP, the duty of the parents is to help the son organize his career, but of course there must be a future in a logical real life.

There are persons who dropped out of school because they were forced to study a certain course. After their parents had spent a huge amount of money to put them in school, buy books, and all that, they dropped out without looking back.

So, is it not better they give him the support he needs to chase his Esports career, now that it's not late? As a streamer, he may not be as rich as a doctor, but he will be happy. His happiness should be all that matters.

This is no longer a new case: kids abandoning the professional course their parents want them to study for something different, not in line with what their parents would want them to have as a career.

I have seen and noticed that those children who took such a career part of their own, not the one their parents chose for them, succeeding at the end of the day.  For those children who obey and go on with the career path their parents want them to end up not getting the real joy of the career they are in because that's not the career path they want for themselves. Some even abandoned their career for something they have been longing to go into as a career.

On that note, Parents should allow their children to go into the career path they choose. What they should do for them is to direct, support, and encourage them.

The world is evolving and a lot of things that were once considered to be the best are nothing compared to what people are getting involved in currently. People's interests are changing and you cannot compare the earnings of a medical doctor and a streamer, it doesn't matter what country the medical doctor is in, gamers and streamers are now considered to be the latest careers that pays in millions.

Although the only downside to streaming is that there are no guarantees that you are ever going to make it on time or probably even make it at all because the industry is crowed and it's almost like a gamble to abandon your profession for it because this is not something that just works overnight it actually takes time and a lot of consistency.

Some parents should understand that just because you gave birth to me doesn't automatically mean you have to decide my future. What if I grow up and don't like that career? Wanting or hoping for your child to become a doctor is not a bad idea, because you mean well for them. But he's the one that will have to live with that career for the rest of his life.

But that does not actually mean that parents should just accept everything without asking some few questions. If your child want to go for another different career different from what you had planned for them, then I think you as a parents should sit them down to understand their reason, know their goals in life and if they have a realistic plan. Having a quiet conversation with your child to understand the reason why they chose their career, and know what steps they are taking to make things workout, and if they actually have a backup plan if thing doesn't go as they plan.

So as a parent all you have to do is guide them through, give them some advice and help them make a responsible decision.

I know that the parents sponsored his tuition to be a doctor and fulfill their dream of having a son who's a doctor but they should allow him leave his dream, what if he only agreed to make them happy and atleast give him education but he's realised that wasn't the path we wants to follow.

Moreover what he's currently doing is earning him good money so they should be happy he didn't end up doing fraud or go into drugs like some kids do when they into college, it's either the parents are self centered or ignorant of his career choice

That's pretty normal for conventional parents not to believe that there's a huge industry sitting in the esports.

They think that people would only do it for fun but try to give them more examples that it's very profitable if someone gets a successful organization to make them as their professional player. Because they're modern athletes too but the title's different for being in e-sports.

It's not just only about playing but it also has guarantees about signing contracts.

But that's a different case, if he's already a doctor I would be also feeling different with that. However, you do you and it's all about the passion. We've got limited time on this world and let them enjoy their son and give him maybe a couple of years.

If he succeeds continue, if he fails then go back to being a doctor.

Parents are free to desire something for their children and want them to be the better and best version of themselves, but they are not supposed to force them into a career path they did not choose.

In Nigeria we have many such cases where parents can easily push their children to go to school and study what they think is best without even minding what the child actually cares about.

If the son in question is making an honest living and building up a career online, that’s not something the parent should be disappointed about. As long as he’s not coming back to ask them for financial support, they should allow the guy to be himself.

Just like you’ve said it parent have the right to guide their children to a particular career part, but this should only be if the child is interested in that aspect. Have we not also seen a scenario where a child was forced to get a degree in a particular field that wasn’t his own interest but the parent’s, and after they finished the program they started another degree that interests them? Parent should also understand that it has to do with what the child also want. The best you should do as a parent is to let the child know about opportunities from each field and let them pick the one of their choice and give them the full support.

If my child says he’s interested in being a streamer today, I’ll support him because it’s even more profitable than the medical degree as long as he can do it why not?

Parents always have dreams for their child. It is hard when that dream don't match what the child wants but at some point you have to accept that it's their life to live. In this modern stage, Esports is not longer a joke. People are seriously cashing out from it. It might not be the traditional path, but it's a real career that pays good money. So instead of fighting him, they should try to understand what he is doing. He might actually be onto something.

But watching games and playing them can not deprive someone who's target is to become doctor, you can be gambling and be studying, but it depend on the IQ of the person, that is why i said gambling can only make someone who is not serious in what is doing to be worst, but someone who is serious will maintain it lane to continue to be serious, but i notice that people see gamblers like people who will not succeed in anything they do, but I disagree with that feeling, but in this scenario, who wants to be what God destined it be, will also be

It's a very difficult situation where his father wants a secure future for him and chose the medical field as a good and respectful path for him. However, they belong to the old generation, thinking that a child's future can only be secure by making him a doctor or an engineer. Both are the best and good options, but today's time is totally different, and those eSports professionals can make millions in a month, more than a doctor's salary.

So, in this case, I will neither disown him nor pressure him. I will sit with him, ask about his interests, and observe him to understand his future goals, as well as his backup plan and the plan to be successful in this field. When I get a satisfactory answer, I will let him know to pursue what he wants and support him in it. If I pressure him, he will not be a doctor as he has no interest in it, and he cannot be a good streamer and player as I stop him from it. In the end, he will just be a useless person.
