Your dream was for your son to grow up and become a doctor, you've talked about it and he agreed but somewhere down the line he started a Esport Career, he started playing video games on live.

Like what the likes of Cai And other popular YouTubers are doing, what will you do? Force in to stop or disown him? Or generally just feel sad about it?

This is the case of a family member right now, his only son out of 4 children choose to abandon doctor for online gaming streamer/ Esport Career, and the mother and father had so much hope in him until now, what would you do in this case?
One thing I discovered is that as technology advances, so does human understanding and the opportunities it offers. The concept of working from home was not widely accepted a few years ago, but it is now among the most common. My dream is for the boy to become a doctor because I love it; it's not the boy's dream. I will let the boy be if, once he reaches adulthood, he decides to pursue a different career path that he finds fulfilling.

I've tried my best, telling them how Esport is so big today but they don't just get it,  simply because they don't believe that anyone who sit and play games has no future.
Due to their lack of knowledge, they are unaware of how popular esports are in the 21st century, and children who are constantly discouraged by their parents from pursuing their dreams frequently flee their homes to chase their dreams.

If the parents try to control the kid they are going to just be disappointed. Support the kid and let him make his own life choices. Would the parents like to be told what they could or couldn't do?
Especially in today’s world, where everyone is exposed and things no longer work in the old ways where there are only limited and known things that one can get involved in that can earn them an honest living, some parents are still reflecting life back to the days of their own fathers.

I don't think anyone can tell other people what to do, even if they're 18 or 20 years old. They might start studying to be a doctor, but at some point, they might realize they're completely uninterested and switch to other specialties or interests, like esports or streaming. I understand that there are successful cases, and that successful streamers earn more than good doctors, but no one knows who will turn out to be better, so we should let them try to become who they want to be, not hinder them. Because they might simply be dissatisfied with their lives, and while they might appear happy, they might scream at night about the pain of not being able to fulfill the things they originally dreamed of.

It's not just anyone. It's the parents we are talking about. Parents have the right to train a child in the way they want them to grow. Suggestions for a better career can be made to the child. It becomes the child's choice to choose what they want. Some will take the parents advice while others will follow their own path. How we plan life is not how life turns out for us most of the time. Furthermore, I disapprove of parents who force a life they wanted to live on their child. Everyone had their chance to live a life. Once your time elapse it is evil to force your child to become who you wanted to be.

Has he himself ever proclaimed to have an interest in becoming a doctor or is this a dream you impose upon him?

My personal opinion is that dreams can change, interests can change, anything can change. If you are going to do something in this life then make sure you enjoy doing it in the first place.

But becoming a doctor just to have the title dr. behind your name because your parents convinced you that this is the best way to go? The parents are the ones who want to feel achievement through you because they themselves never achieved anything. You should not become a doctor if you are not actually interested in actually being one. Not only will this make you a bad, incompetent and disinterested doctor, it will make you an unhappy person.

Being a doctor is a huge responsibility, not a social trophy to flaunt in front of your neighbors.  Angry

I've tried my best, telling them how Esport is so big today but they don't just get it,  simply because they don't believe that anyone who sit and play games has no future.

I think you need to let him make his own mistakes. The harder you push, the more he will resist.

Sometimes it is hard to make our parents happy because of our choice on what we chose to become in life. The problem our society face today is that Parents care only how or what they want their children to become without the concent of the child, or they don't care if their children are interested in what they want them to become or not. They are just concerned about how they feel or what they want, but when the child is grown up and decide to take decision and stand by it,  it becomes like a slap to their face. My uncle Also wanted his son to become a medical doctor but he ended up to become an artist and he was angry but later he latter realize that he didn't look closely at his son to know his passion. He had no choice than to respect the childs decition.

Not only esports, but any content creator on any network is the new art form. While the term "art" might carry a lot of weight for some, let's not forget that it doesn't mean mediocrity doesn't exist. In short, some creators are true artists.

Then those involved in esports, online poker, etc. They represent a new source of income, and in some cases, a real source of income. It's like your child wanting to be a singer, painter, dancer, etc.

In conclusion, they're these changing times...

The problem is actually from the parents because it is not up to the parents in the first to decide for him the profession he should go for. The fact that there son decided to choose a different career doesn't mean he is useless. There is not wrong in the career the parents choose which is to be a doctor, but this doesn't mean that he must be a doctor because that's what the parents want.
However, it is not a good idea for him to leave school because of gaming. The best thing is for his parents to ask him to choose whatever career he wants and support him in whatever way they can. It must not be doctor or whatever career the parents want, but what he wants and can excel at.
What drives people people to do well in a particular field is passion and this why parents shouldn't be forcing their children in to a particular field that the child is not passionate or interested in, becoming a doctor is good just as you said but the truth is that the child may likely not do well in it since he has zero interest in it. What every child needs is a good support system in whatever that is their own choice, do you know that up till now most parents even get to the extend of choosing a life partner for their children? This has destroyed so many parents and their children relationship when the child refuses to do as the parents wanted.

I believe, parents do have hope or wish for their kids, but they are here to guide them and not forced them to follow the path they want. It is their kids' future, so who will live such life for the rest of their life? It is their kids. So if they are not happy and struggling that parents' dream, they will become a failure. Because their kids will be unhappy for what he's doing and that's not living the life.

As someone who has been in that position, I understand how difficult it is to guide someone towards the right path. However, sometimes a firm approach is needed to steer the child towards something better. I'm not saying that e-sports is a bad industry, but lets consider what percentage of people succeed in that industry. Realistically, its better for him to become a doctor compared to becoming a streamer, where the chances of success are not very high. But, if he cannot be advised, what can we say, the best way is to cut off all his access to it. It seems harsh, but for his own good, that approach can be taken.

This is just the simple truth, parents can give advice to their children, and their children will listen, but in the future, the same child that ones listened to the advice of his parents will later turn to follow his own path. Every parent should know that their children can make their own choices when they are of a certain age.

Even in my local area, I see that a lot of families plan the lives of their children very well, but as the children grow, they follow their own path, not all of the children actually end up becoming what their parents expected them to become. We are all human (no matter how a might be small he will not remain small forever), and things can change at anytime.

The question I have for the parents are:
Was their son performing well as a student doctor or a doctor if he was already practicing before quitting to pursue a career in Esport?
How is their son's life now after fully starting up an Esport career?

I understand that every parent wants what is best for their children, but some parents act ignorantly to the needs of their children. Such behaviour by parents is very common in Nigeria where parents will want their children to pursue certain careers just for selfish reasons. The reasons can be as selfish as wanting to be addressed as parents of a doctor, lawyer, pilot  etc. Very little parents pay attention to who their child truly is and the best career they should go into that will align with their personalities and bring out the best in them as well.

Esports is not something irrelevant. People are cashing our real time. I will advice the parents to read and understand what Esport is so they will appreciate what their child does for s living.

I've tried my best, telling them how Esport is so big today but they don't just get it,  simply because they don't believe that anyone who sit and play games has no future.
Parents feels honoured and fulfilled when they see they children picking careers that are professionally inclined like doctor, pilots etc, but society have it ways of shaping and changing desires into another reality.

The reason the father of such kids will be disappointed in his eSports career is because of the stereotypes around gambling and the activities around it, but if the son is able to meet his financial obligations, with time the parent will find a balance ground to accept his new found career.

It's up to the son to decide what he wants for his life. What parents can do is to show the potential outcomes of his decision, so he can make a more aware judgement when making his choice. The current to make a living from videogames is like the old mindset of becoming a soccer player. I don't know if that has been common in your countries, but where I live it is, and there are parents who encourage their children to do so, instead of encouraging to study and become a doctor, for an example.

If the person is skilled in videogames, I think they should give it a try, although they should keep in mind the popularity of such games is quite volatile and doesn't last for a very long time. Once popularity is gone, they must adapt themselves to a new game immediately, otherwise, the source of income is over.

Sometimes parent just wants the best for their children.. It’s not like  the son won’t make it if he study to become a Doctor, unless he just feel the pressure is quite too much and he can’t handle moving forward in such line. Quitting a career for a popular..just because everyone is doing it may not work for him.

He’s already switched but did he talked to the parents before doing it? If yes then he’s done the right thing, it left to the parent to show some support. If he doesn’t work out at the end, he’s going to learn his lesson the hardway.

With parents support, he’s likely to succeed or recover from his mistakes early.

I have been hearing of Esport career before but I haven’t ever settled down to read about it or know how they work not until last year. A friend of mine younger brother is dip into that and after he explained for me how the Esport works, I think the game is even underrated as regards to how we hear about it. Common if your son is good in that, he can build a big and sustainable career just through participatory in those games. I have seen how my friends younger brother is making money through this and I can’t just imagine one having an opportunity in it and not leverage on it.

They have a future and with the way technology is advancing and people are getting more interested in tech stuffs, that line may even get more saturated if people don’t leverage on that field of hustle too. Esport is a very big career path. Doctors do make money too, but that doesn’t mean you should limit your child from what they’re good at and has expertise on becoming.

Parents are free to desire something for their children and want them to be the better and best version of themselves, but they are not supposed to force them into a career path they did not choose.

In Nigeria we have many such cases where parents can easily push their children to go to school and study what they think is best without even minding what the child actually cares about.

If the son in question is making an honest living and building up a career online, that’s not something the parent should be disappointed about. As long as he’s not coming back to ask them for financial support, they should allow the guy to be himself.

What some parents have not realised is that the child has a right to decide his own destiny and that involves career trajectory. As a parent, forcing your child to study a discipline he does not wish to is just another way of stepping on the child's right to freedom of choice.

Some parents wants their children to live and fulfil their own dreams that they were unable to fulfil. Meanwhile they did not stop to ask if the child has his own dream he is passionate for.

Ex: the popular Nigerian artiste known as Falz was ones in this shoe. Parent sent him to study law so he could be a barrister, that was the parents dream for him. The young man kindly studied the law came back home presented his achievement to parents and went on doing music. Today he is a popular successful star, a dream his parents were against from the beginning.

We all want the best for our son, but I'm an open-minded person, and I believe he will carve out his own destiny, so I will just let him choose the best path for his life, because it's his own life, and he should be the author of his own life.
The only way a person can succeed in life is to do the things he enjoys and prefers.
Even parents can't impose their will on their children; they will just rebel. We are in a generation where we have the freedom to do what we want to do to better our lives, so parents should let their child shape their destiny

The parents are not wrong for protecting their kids future. But we all are exposed to the information that is available. That's what is causing those parents not to believe in that. Information she was given is few so she know nothing about a sport like that. The parents at the end of the day can only give advise and guidance. Whatever they do, the kid will Always go for what they want.

Well, I am not sure whether this has something directly to do with gambling, but keeping in mind how eSports are very prominent within the world of betting, I assume it would be okey to have this thread here on the gambling session of the forum.

It is normal to have parents and grand-parents to worry about us if we decide to take a path they don't actually understand, in their times there was no such a thing like ESports and gambling on the internet, so they probably think the son is throwing his life away.

If it was my son, I would convince him to finish his education and one he has the title, then decide what to do with his life.

I've tried my best, telling them how Esport is so big today but they don't just get it,  simply because they don't believe that anyone who sit and play games has no future.
If children are moving in the wrong direction, then of course it will be the responsibility of parents like us to explain them well because children will move in the wrong direction at this age and at this time our biggest responsibility will be to give them more time. There is a high possibility of a child going in the wrong direction from school life to college life and if we can slow down the speed of going in the wrong direction by caring for them, loving them and disciplining them during this time, then we will definitely be able to create a beautiful future for our children. Every parent cares for their child, has love and hope and if children can be raised with care and discipline, then I think it is possible to develop children as human beings. However, if children move in the wrong direction, they should be brought from the wrong path to the good path with love without being harsh. If it is not possible to bring them, then perhaps a harsh decision can be reached.
