A friend of mine while we were growing up, made quite a terrible mistake with gambling. The money that was ment for his school fees, he used it to gamble and that really made his family lose interest in supporting anything that concerns his education. Because of the result he got from both sides he vowed never to gamble again because it almost ruined his relationship with his family. Recently I met with this same old friend and he was still in the act of gambling. He is definitely not the only one who has declared not to gamble again but still did it anyway, so my question is: What do you think would have prompted these people to return to gambling?
First what made him to start gambling will be the belief he has towards gambling or because of what people were saying about gambling and it is very wrong to engage into something because of what people are saying about it. Using money that was meant for school to gamble is a high level of irresponsibility especially when the money came from parents though the decision his parents made was good and at same time bad. And like said, what promted him to gamble again maybe the belief he had.

What do you think would have prompted these people to return to gambling?
I was once in your friend's shoes, ruining all the plans I had made & then promising never to gamble again. That promise didn't really hold, because after a few weeks or months, I went back to gambling. Well, one reason why someone returns to gamble again is that they can't accept their losses, not intending to chase loss. It's difficult for someone already involved in gambling to break free, the best course of action is to exercise control & set boundaries to avoid becoming a problem gambler.

People return to gambling after quitting because generally speaking, gambling is a fun hobby. The rush and thrill of the excitement tied in with the potential to earn money make it hard to stop permanently.

Their dire quest for money is usually what propels majority of folks to relapse into gambling after they themselves have vowed never to gamble again.. Gambling as we all know can never be a reliable way of making money due to the level of uncertainty it carries...But in a situation when someone is struggling financially, such an individual may start mistaking gambling as an easier and quicker way out of that their current predicament, especially when they remember those times when they won before... Another reason that bring majority of folks back is the believe that they can control their gambling habits better than they did in the past... They may begin feeding themselves with the notion that they have learnt their lessons from their past gambling habits and so will now only stake small amount at a time .. But what they keep forgetting is that those small bets they plan on doing may even result in loss, which may very well lead into them trying to recover it by any means necessary... The reason that pushed you into gambling in the first place has to be first be fixed, only then can you be able to control your gambling habits..

He is definitely not the only one who has declared not to gamble again but still did it anyway, so my question is: What do you think would have prompted these people to return to gambling?
The question is: are we allowed to change our minds? I guess there are all kinds of examples, but if someone had a bad time, recovered, and decided to give it another shot with a different perspective, what's wrong with that? What I wish to say, we can't judge just because he got back into gambling, before that, we need to consider other factors as well. Most of us have said "goodbye to gambling" too many times, but we were not honest, and we returned with a new plan. But I dare to say it's all ok, don't eat yourself up about it if you didn't spend more than you could afford to lose. There must be priorities... put your loved ones in the first place, take care of other things, and if something is left and you wish to give it a try... no harm in that.

It's almost the same thing that happened to me ,I won huge money one certain time, because of that I had to increase my stake ,which result to me being on a losing streak for A very long time ,to a point I had to use money ment for other stuff to gamble, hoping I'm gonna win because I was having cut one and two ,so I felt I was close to winning, before I could realized ,I have lost a lot ,so I got angry and decided to quit ,after some months, guess what I went back to gambling again but this time it wasn't as before ,I was gradually getting addicted but now I'm mindful on how I gamble,so maybe he has learnt his lesson, and I believe he will not make some mistake he did the last time .

I think the last-ditch mentality is what brings them back to gambling. Because what I've seen is someone who has made a lot of losses through gambling and vowed to quit gambling permanently, but after a few days, he gets involved in gambling again, and later when you ask him why he got involved in gambling again despite his promise, he says that he started with some money as a last-ditch effort to recover his losses, but from that moment on, he got involved in gambling again. So I think that's also one of the reasons where they tried to test their luck or make a last-ditch effort to recover their losses, but from that they get involved in gambling again.

Maybe he later developed more interest for gambling after he decided to quit. He should have follow what his family said. He waste his life for nothing. The mistake that he made from the first place is gambling at the young age, and if he is addicted at that stage, it will be difficult for him to recover. Who knows how far he might have been by now, if he have not waste his life in gambling. Irresponsible can lead to such act, greediness can also lead to such act.

It's just hard to quit gambling when he was addicted before. While there have been success stories that we can read, an individual is going to have a hard time when he's got no willing power to quit wholly. I think if it means going back just to have a pastime, there's no problem with that. But if that former addicted gambler wants to gamble and go back to his former addiction, there's no help on that. Even giving them a lot of advices and scenarios that will make them broke, they're not going to take heed and will follow their desires because "once a gambler, always a gambler".

Why do people quit gambling? One of the main reasons for quitting gambling is that they lose money frequently and do not have enough money to continue gambling, so they quit gambling. When such gamblers get money in their hands, they remember gambling again and then they go back to gambling to recover their lost money. Gambling addiction does not end easily. Most people who are addicted to gambling once return to gambling even after quitting. Basically, these things happen because of emotions. Emotions cannot easily accept gambling losses and force themselves to think that it is very easy to earn money from gambling, so why should I stop gambling with my losses. And this is why gamblers return even after quitting gambling.

It is not always easy for someone to quit gambling for their entire life, especially if they have been seriously involved in it for a long time. Someone may quit for a while, but most of those who are able to quit gambling for life after promising themselves that they will never go back are people who have not been involved in gambling for a very long period of time.Even I went through a period when I promised myself that I would quit gambling and never go back to it again because of the bad experience I had after losing an amount of money that was not meant for gambling. I was lucky that I was able to quit for some period of time, but, seriously, I still came back and started gambling again. However, since I came back, I have only been gambling for fun and nothing more than that. Seriously, I have never gambled with more than I can afford to lose since I started again, because I always set a gambling budget for myself every month.

I guess it has something to do simply with human nature. You can avoid something that gives you dopamine, even if it is unhealthy or bad for you in other ways, such as financial for example. But as human beings we are not perfect, and most of them time we will not have the will-power to stop doing something that gives us a dopamine rush. Our brains are pretty much wired in such a way that we are dopamine-seeking creatures.

The key reason why your friend can’t completely quit is because of the addictive aspect of gambling, once someone gets addicted to gambling to the point of using his fees for gambling then know that it would be very difficult for such a person to quit gambling, someone that is just starting gambling newly won’t have the mind to gamble with his fees, just know that for a gambler to get to the point of using his fees such a gambler is highly addicted, the thing with gambling is that it is enjoyable by the person who is gambling, people predict on what they love like sports etc and the implication is that even if such persons choose to quit gambling it will be difficult especially when such a person finds himself in an environment where that event he likes predicting on is taken place, such person can easily be prompted into returning to gambling.

The question is: are we allowed to change our minds? What I wish to say, we can't judge just because he got back into gambling, before that, we need to consider other factors as well. People are allowed to change their minds and no one will hold it against them. But you should know that a person changing his perspective is one thing, but returning back to something that almost damage your life is a total different thing. It's true that every individual has the freedom to make their choice's in life, but that does not necessarily mean that might be a wise decision or a safe choice to make. Just like the person the OP is talking about, gambling almost destroyed him. He was using money that was meant for school fees to gamble, and that also damage the family trust they had for him. I also know of a person that owns a big boutique before, currently now he's back to square one all because of AVIATOR. So now tell me, when this person later get back on his feet, are you saying he should go back to gambling simply because he eventually recoverd and he changed his mind?

What prompts such people to return to gambling? The same things that made them get into gambling in the first place: greed and the urge to gamble. What could be the reason for a person to use funds that are supposed to be used for something else in gambling? It is greed, which makes them believe that they can make more money with it and then they can keep the extra funds and use the current funds for whatever they are supposed to be used for, but we all know that gambling is brutal, and winning is never guaranteed. I heard a similar story where a guy gambled the funds that he and his fiance had saved for their marriage, and then his partner left him because of this carelessness. Some people just don't get the fact that gambling is not a way for them to make money, even if you have a billion dollars, you are never guaranteed to make money from gambling with that amount.

Gambling decisions are easier said than done, so don't mind people when you discover that the altar some words and later couldn't fulfill them; it is more likely that people react to certain situations based on their emotions without thinking twice about whether they really did say such things or not. This has also happened to me in several situations whereby I will have to say something but later revoke my words because I am being persuaded only by my emotions at that time.

If you look closely you’ll notice that most of this gambler’s decisions are made out of emotion and not really because they’re convinced inside themselves with the decision they want to take at that moment. It happens to almost every gambler, it has happened to me several times I’ve decided that I’ll not gamble again, this decision will usually happen only after one heavy loss, but after a short while I’m back gambling again, I took the decision out of emotion, it’s just natural. I’ve been able to associate with group of gamblers and most of them will say they won’t give up until they make it big in gambling, some of them says they want to recover the money they lost and due to the annoyance of the lost they want take their revenge, and all sorts of reasons. The truth is that it’s not easy for a gambler to quit gambling finally at an instant, it’s a gradual process especially for someone who is an addict, it will take time.

One thing you need to understand is that promising to quit gambling is not enough to stop totally, it takes more than just mere words to quit gambling you need to back it up with action and discipline. There are lots of people that decided to stop gambling a long time ago and till date they keep on making promises that they can't keep to themselves.
Breaking an addiction isn't easy, and the problem is that they aren't going about quitting gambling the right way that's the reason they end up relapsing. Most people fix their mind on getting rich through gambling and as a result of that whenever they stop for a while they go back to it in no time, this is all because of how dependent they have become on it and if that mindset does not change they can't quit gambling.

Everyone makes mistake, There are things that people do that should not be called mistake, cause how is that a mistake using your school fees to gamble. It was a consciously done action and if it had gone successful for the young man it would not have become a mistake. What we know what the consequences of what we are about to do could be when it goes wrong but still goes on doing it, I cannot call it a mistake. It is a stupid decision that was made, and people has to face consequences of their actions. Gamblers quitting gambling dew to a bad outcome that happened to them are more likely to return after a while, this is cause, they quit not by their own choice but by what happened which they were overwhelmed by it at that time.
