This comes to the situation if the person referring has profit or not.  If one is selling with a profit, this can't be considered selfless at all.  It is all business.  Now if one tried and tested the products before he sells it and make sure there is no underlying issue, this is call responsible selling where one is making sure that the product quality is top notch.

Now if the person is not selling with profit and just referring good products, then this can be called selfless responsible recommendation.  

I believe people should be ready to consume what they sell, promote or give to others otherwise it's likely they dislike them because they are bad/harmful, money is just their top priority or they just don't care about others.

Yes people should be responsible to their client.  They should have tested the products first or if not be able to test the products due to the nature of the products could have done an intensive research and have full documentation of what the products can do and how it affects the customer together with possible harmful effect if taken.

This must be laid out to customer especially if we are profiting from the transaction.

Aren't you being too biased here OP..The fact that folks is profit oriented dosen't always mean that the person dosen't care about his or her customers, just as caring for customers dosen't automatically translate into folks running a business for selfless reasons... I have a family to feed, worker to pay, children to train in the university, do you expect me to start operating a charitable business? Definitely not.. Business needs profit for it to be able to survive and even grow..And that why you dint have to always seen Profits and Customers wellbeing as opposites...

Also consider folks who happens to be vegetarian and let's say they venture into the sales of meat and other things of that nature.. Since.the business owner is a vegetarian, of course you wouldn't expect him/or her to start using or eating what they sell, just because they are trying to prove to their customers that they care about them, where is the logic in that? We also could have cases of folks selling baby products, and this merchant may even be unmarried without any child.. of course you don't expect them to start also wearing baby clothes just to prove a point...So there could be millions of reason why merchants don't use the product that they sell to others...

What your attention should be is the quality of the product been sold... Of course, any merchant that sells counterfeit products to its customers definitely dosen't have the interest of their customers at heart and that is when you can conclude that the merchant does not care about her own customer's well being..

If you don't trust your own business and you don't use them personally, then what's the essence of building it and promoting it to others?  That could only create doubt and confusion to your future customers, and worst is they will never bite your business, the same way you don't promote your business not even to your family and loved ones.

So its really a big key for business owners to create a business that is first beneficial on their own, on their family and friends before it will be introduced to other people. When we sell or promote something to others, first think that needs to strike is the benefits we experienced. In simple, I sell insurance and I'll explain how I've benefitted through it. We share our experience and the rest is left to the person sitting in front. Here being selfish is trying to convert his mind to accept and buy the insurance, but the selfless side is just the briefing about the product along with the experience. Whether they want it or not is left to them without any compulsion. Somehow if the person has purchased an insurance and benefitted surely, he is going to share his experience with someone else and this promotion is really helpful. In reality selfless business might take a long time to profit, but once we've got successful it never gets broken.

Why not? They should be our first target as consumers because they aren't biased in giving feedbacks. At least you will know if its something that could hit the market or you have to make additional changes so that it will be a hit to the desired market.

Once it will be approved to them, then we'll be confident enough to promote it to the rest of the people. Having a good support system can go a long way, especially in business where there is tight competition in the market. You need those people that will truly believe in your business first.

I don't agree with this in any way because business is about profit making and whosoever is doing a business can't be doing it not for profit sake. If he was that benevolent he would have just opened a charity organisation. Offering quality is what shouldn't be negotiated for a business man because he understands that quality entrenches high demand because no customer in their right thinking sense would leave quality for inferior.

There's this popular statement in economics, that  "it's not in the benevolence of the baker that we have our bread, neither that of the butcher that we have meat or the brewers that we have wine", but it's all in their endeavours to make profit" end of quote.

Why not make such a recommendation, once I have the assurance of what I am doing is legitimate and I am not taking much risk in doing it compared to the benefits it's going to serve, I will only ensure that I don't give them the 100% assurance of full delivery, so that they will all understand the risk that is associated with anything that has to do with investment.

It is better you do not mix business with family and do not involve your friends or relation with  the business that you are doing. There is a reason why this is advice as it makes you a professional and prevents you from abusing your privilege which many people do because they want to make their family members happy. If you're working in the lottery house and your family wins then you will be investigated or any for any help from you to them and that should tell you how you should handle other businesses that is not lottery so as to prevent similar things from happening.

My business does not follow me home when I am done doing it during the work hours and it does not matter what type of business that I am doing and this has worked for me so far. There is always some hidden side effect of our works be it in promotion or other things and knowing how this can be dangerous it is better my family members do not partake in this or try to take advantage of my position that is why I will not involve them in anything that has to do with my business.

Well that's a nice contribution, but for me I know where I buy goods from. When I buy something from a selfish person I know by their actions/reaction, mostly awkward response or they are always aggressive and no manner of approach and don't Care or bother to know if you are offended or not. I don't need to confirm their products because they display their products by their characteristics. Selfless people are easy to identify by the good sense of humor and respect, always polite and respectful not always fast to response but calm to listen slow to speak.

Not everything I promote I would recommend to my loved ones, neither to the public in general. I guess every promoted products and services are focused on determined niches of people. Take casinos, for an example. We promote them here on this forum, but I don't recommend that everyone starts gambling deliberately. I don't consider gambling to be for everyone, so I always make sure to let it clear on my views, while also explaining what people can expect from gambling, when they should gamble and when they should avoid it.

The final decision is always up to the another person, though. I'm not here to manipulate the audience to consume something they may not need and may not be interested at all.

I must be willing to consume whatever I sell to others, especially to those closest to me or my family, for when building a healthy business, this is the only approach that is both logically and ethically consistent. In business, honesty must be the top priority, not money. If a businessperson deliberately trades integrity for money, their reputation will be ruined in the long run.

I will implement the same standard system (a business based on selflessness), because honesty ensures the business's long-term sustainability. If we do not dare to offer our product to friends and family, it means that, deep down, we already know there is a flaw in the product being promoted.

They might not use it because it is harmful or substandard. And the reason why they are marketing or selling the product is solely to make money. While growing up, there were drug dealers who never used these hard drugs. Some of them wouldn't also allow their moved ones to use these illegal substances. They are just driven by money and nothing more.

This can be related to international trade. There are some products they are produced mainly for a particular country or continent. Some of the goods sold in my location are not used by the producing nations. Many of them have caused harm to citizens and the producers don't care since their citizens are not using them.

I do not think making profit simple means that someone is being selfish because that is the main point of having a business in the first place. For me the real deal is what happens when there is a problem with what you are selling. Do you fix it because you care about the people buying from you or do you keep selling because you do not want to lose money?

Anyone can claim their product is good when everything is going in smoothly but what is exactly is it you do when making the right decision will cost you money.

Well, I really do not agree with you that a selfless business man or woman is  not usually more desirous of profits the way a selfish business man or woman would  be, both of them are so much in need of the profit but what differentiate them is the fact that one is selfish and doesn't care about the quality of what they are selling while the other person is very much concern about the quality of what they are selling and won't compromise quality for more profit the way the other person might probably do.

Most people that engage in the kind of retail trade that you are talking about are doing so primarily to make profit and it is more common in some developing countries where anyone can easily go into a small scale business of buying and selling of daily needed of most homes without having to worry about too many regulations.

I'm in business to make money, make a living - call that "selfish" and that's fine. Making profit and providing value are not mutually exclusive, they are exactly the same objective. I fail by cutting corners, sell junk, mistreating people and I lose reputation, lose repeat customers and go out of business. Looking out for my customers is not saint-like self-sacrifice, it's basic long-term self-interest.

And as for using the "loved ones" test to prove whether someone is ethical? It breaks down fast depending on what you actually sell.

If you cant recommend what you sell yo your loved ones or consume what you sell it means what you sell is not good for public consumption and this can be considered as a crime. This is a kind of business that customers are not considered but the main interests is just to make money and any business that can be recommended to loved one or used by the owner it means if the public should know what is behind the business no one will patronise the business any more. The first thing in a business is to render a good service to customers because customers always comes first and not the interest of the owner of business.  When interest is considered first it can affect attention of giving the customers the best service.

To me I don’t think these are reasons why people actually go into business, so long as it’s business we are talking about, I can agree that some people go into some kind of businesses because they have passion for it, but profit making is the sole purpose whether we like it or not. Any one going it business because they actually like what they do always stand out to produce one of the best products.

Where I think your argument is the alignment between what the business owners want to sell, and what they are willing to use or recommend personally.
If someone sell or produce a product and doesn’t allow his family’s and friends to use it will automatically tell if the product is substandard and along the line that business will cripple because no matter long it will take it will be discovered by outsiders too.
The best selling product most time have the best quality and patronised by everyone, but at the same time there could be also be legitimate reason for not personally  using a product you sell or produce in the case of maybe allergy or something.

If I can’t sell it to my love ones then I don’t see any reasons to sell it to others . Because my love ones will be my first target they are the ones that will give their honest review first before I will start selling it to others , as an entrepreneur your product should be something that’s solving a particular problem that’s why it’s always advice for one to do their feasibility study first before venturing in to any business, in order to know the market gabs . Where customers need are not met and stuff so make sure your product is worth the effort and should be a solution to a problem .

I think the social media influencers needs to answer this question, I'm sure they don't allow their loved ones to use the counterfeit products or advertise and the pump and dump coins they shill online. Most of these guys don't have conscience at all and I agree they only care about their money.

I like quality and I can recommend to my family members what I recommend to my clients, but my only problem is that family members tend to undermine recommendations from who they know. Most of them might think I'm trying to extort from them when they hear of the prices, but same people would get fake at higher prices from outsiders. I've had this experience a good number of times and that's why I refrain from dealing with certain family members whenever their finances are involved.

Yes I can actually recommend my loved ones to do the kind of business am into expecially if the business is lucrative. One thing is that as a business man, you will not always be available, so if nobody knows about your business, when you are not there, the business will possibly crash, but by the time you recommend someone to that business, even when you are not there the business grows.
While doing any business the quality of services rendered to your customers also matters a lot, when you render good services, and possibly give good product to your customers, so your business will likely to flourish, but those who only want to make profit , and does not care about how the customers feel are likely to loose their business. Greed in business is very bad because it will never help to promote your business or make it progressive, and that is the main reason we should avoid it, end embrace selfless services to people we sell our product to.

In our country, there are usually many marketing people who usually market bad products, but the quality of their products is very, very bad. In our country, microplastics are found in most foods, but during marketing, only the positive aspects of the product are presented the most. Unscrupulous businessmen mainly prepare food in unhealthy environments to earn more profit, and during marketing, they mainly present the good aspects and hide the bad aspects. However, those who do marketing do not sell these products to their own relatives. Restaurant businessmen in my country do not mainly invite their relatives to eat at the restaurant, but they are always busy advertising the delicious food of the restaurant.
