Many Bitcoin users focus heavily on keeping their Bitcoin safe from hackers, scammers and losing their seed phrase. But there is another question I think we should also ask ourselves:
What happens to our Bitcoin if we are suddenly unable to access it?
For someone using self-custody, having the seed phrase is extremely important. But simply having the seed phrase does not always mean that your family or someone you trust will know what to do with it if something happens to you.
Some people may never tell anyone that they own Bitcoin. Others may keep their seed phrase somewhere safe but never explain how their loved ones can access the funds if they are no longer around.
I think Bitcoin security should not only be about protecting our coins while we are here. We should also think about how to make sure our Bitcoin does not become permanently inaccessible.
At the same time, sharing too much information about your Bitcoin or seed phrase can create another security risk.
So I would like to hear from the community:
How should a Bitcoin holder balance privacy and security with making sure their Bitcoin can still be recovered by the right person if they are no longer able to access it?

It has being discussed around here in different threads I guess, the issue with this kind of situation is highly centred around trust, there should be be atleast one person from your family that you can’t atleast entrust the information about the security of your holding with. In the case of death, they should be able to recover your coins and not just allow it to be on the network without anyone being able to access them. It’s also advisable to have an inheritance planned drafted which every detail necessary to access your bitcoin should be included and sealed just between you and your trusted spouse or even family member that you can’t atleast entrust trust with you life. It’s also been said that you should not just keep the details with them without putting them through on how they the system actually works, I mean they should also atleast have a fair knowledge of the bitcoin also, so that the plan for the recovery can be actualised successfully even after your demise. As for the question you ask from your title, it will just be there as lost or abandoned bitcoin if you nobody can claim them.

If you are someone who owns a small family, a spouse, a child or children, I did not include your siblings; it’s very easy for you to safe-keep your seed phrase in your home, and no one will have full details of what’s actually theirs or how to access the place where the seed is stored.
Even if you are no longer there, you have planted an idea in them that you have something worth saving, and they will have to put their heads together to figure out a way and crack it. There are a lot of ways; this is just one of them, and what’s most important is balancing the security and trust.

I think you need to change your topic, because after reading the topic I believe that you meant what happens to your Bitcoin if you actually lose your seed phrase or can't personally access your wallet but in contrast to what the title meant you then went ahead to talk about how will others access your Bitcoin if you are no more.
I not think the title is in line with the post itself. Regardless I think this particular discussion has been discussed here before, ad got me I think it's a personal decision to make, I will not tell you who to give your seed phrase to or who to trust, if you ever worry about something happening to you then you need to find someone you trust, that's a personal problem.

This has been discussed in various threads. Still, I think it's good to have a discussion on such a topic.
Most of the time we talk about strengthening the security of the wallet, the purpose of which is to keep everyone safe from fraudsters and theft. But along with ensuring this security, we also need to ensure that our hard-earned Bitcoins do not remain unclaimed on the network.
Along with security planning, we should also be aware of our succession planning. First, we need to have a trusted person whom you can trust to protect the assets, and then make him a qualified person to use Bitcoin. Then, choose a safe place to store the seed phrase and passphrase where no one can access it without your permission while you are alive, even if someone finds the place. But after your death, only the person you identify can access the wallet from that place.
Everyone has different strategies, and since this is a security strategy, no one will share their personal strategy with you. You will have to use your creativity to find the best strategy for the situation.

It's important and if you're married both your spouse and kids know about bitcoin and how to access it from a wallet. If possible, open a wallet for them to be conversant with and send them little bitcoin once in a while. When they understand the basics of a wallet and how important it is to keep the seed phrase safe. You can use a time lock for them to have access to your bitcoin when you are gone.
You can give the seed phrase to someone trustworthy among them and the passphrase to another . However, you can still use a multisig wallet with two different cosigners.

The truth is most of us usually focus on "don't share your seed phrase" without even considering the other side of the problem. If well checked, we'll be shocked by the number of early Bitcoin holders who are no more and didn't give anyone the access to their Bitcoin. Seed phrase should be private, yes we agree, but we should have plans on how to let our loved ones access our Bitcoin should anything happen to us. Security is not only protecting our asset from everyone, it also includes making sure that we give access to the right person or persons when it becomes necessary.

This topic has been discussed many times and it is really a food for thought because we do not own our lives and since if nobody has access to your seed phrase, the bitcoins in your wallets will be lost forever since that wallet will be inaccessible upon the demise of the holder if they do not share the secret keys with someone they trust. This is the area that many people have been asking questions about privacy associated with bitcoin investment. I have read stories of how a wife stole the bitcoins of her husband after they were separated, a son can also betray his father or is it family members? Unfortunately, nobody can be trusted when it comes to money especially the one you kept secretly. What will happen is that if you hold a huge amount of bitcoin, create different wallets and give the secret keys of one of the wallets to someone you trust then keep the seed phrases of the other wallets to yourself incase if the person you trust pass through your back and betray you. That will be a smart way instead of giving them the seed phrase of all your wallets.

I think this topic have been discussed by several people on different threads, anyways the security of your bitcoin is very important, as well as having a privacy, you can store your bitcoins somewhere that is more safer, let me assume that you have some bitcoin assets since isn’t good to share your seed phrase, it’s better you keep it somewhere like a safe place in a will where you can also afford to keep it safe with your lawyer, I think this are the best ways to do your things that would be more safer to keep your bitcoin assets, as a Bitcoin investor it’ would be more better to have a good privacy and security with your bitcoin investments.

The person you are going to give access to your bitcoin should be someone you can trust and not just anybody. You as a person know better who you can trust and tell where your seed phrase is and can be accessible when you’re no more. One thing about bitcoin investment is to profit from the investment and also your people benefiting from the investment. So there is no point in your investment remaining inaccessible when you’re no more. There should always be a clue to help your loved ones have access to the investment. For me, there is no point in holding for a very long term and end up not benefiting from the investment. I believe in taking partials from my investments timely and reinvest back as a good market condition to invest.

Your title Re: What Happens to Your Bitcoin If You Can No Longer Access It speaks differently from your post. Preparing a good plan for your Bitcoin inheritance is the best choice. We can't trust no one with our seeds, but there should be someone you trust enough to let them know how to access them or even the slightly knowledge of what to do if the case may arise. You might choose to protect your privacy from the public, but from your loved ones, there is some level to it. It will be sad to see that all your years of working and investment goes to waste when you are no longer here.

A lot of people feel comfortable with this suggestion of sharing the information of our holding to our love ones, but honestly to me it's never a good Idea. Let me use bank details as an example, I have seen several times how some spouses and their children's joke around with this informations like ATM pin. you'll see some family where maybe the father gives the ATM pin to his wife and before you know it, almost the children have memorized that pins. Who else knows who they will discuss it with outside? I know death is inevitable but my opinion is that, instead of sharing your bitcoin holdings information with someone you think you trust, it's advisable to open a business for them and support them. That way even if death occur, they can still do well on their own. But If try to trust anyone with this kind of information, honestly you may likely lose your funds.

For someone using self-custody, having the seed phrase is extremely important. But simply having the seed phrase does not always mean that your family or someone you trust will know what to do with it if something happens to you.
One of the best ways to handle such a thing is by telling someone you truly trust in your family about your crypto assets so that if anything happens to you in the future, wealth will not be wasted. There are many people whose family members had a lot of crypto assets, but they couldn't access them because the original owner is no longer alive due to an unexpected incident that occurred. It's important to keep your seed phrase secure not just from hackers, but from family and friends, too, because there are people you should trust with your crypto assets, maybe your wife or mom, even dad if possible. Telling them about your crypto assets will help. Even though you don't tell them how much you have stored in your wallet, at least tell them that if anything should happen to you, they should use it to access your crypto wallet and take care of themselves.

I have read almost all the replies to this post, even though it is quite a repetition of older post, I keep giving sane answer and that's centered on activation of the 'dead man's switch'.
The dead mans switch is more automated and a fail safe mechanism that helps transfer ownership of Bitcoin from the deceased owner to someone else already pre-chosen. No need for lawyers or trusted family members to know about this, it automatically happens after being setup.

Did you mean setting the time a signed transaction should get into the memory pool? That is one of the best approach, but no approach is fully good. What if you set the time but when it happened, the people to inherit the con is not more using the wallet? What if the the person to inherit the coins know about the coin and kill the person if the time lock set is not really long, expecting the coin later? No one want this to happen but anything is possible. What about multisig?

This scenario is what I am aware of as well and I also think it's wrong sharing your ATM pin with your kids that way but someone definitely needs to know your details or they should be written down somewhere it can be accessible on case of any sudden thing. I think you're getting the idea of sharing your Bitcoin holding information wrongly. The idea is not to share it with them as support alone but also it is necessary for someone to inherit your investment when you are no more. Opening a business for them to support their lives is good but sharing your Bitcoin holdings with a family is necessity, someone must inherit it or would you rather not share it with anyone and you lose your assets completely when you are no more? It's ridiculous to not share it. Your assets will be lost completely without no one being able to recover it.

I believe one thing that is so easily overlooked is actually practicing the inheritance plan BEFORE it is needed.
It's good to leave instructions as to where the seed is stored, but when the recipient isn't familiar with Bitcoin, they may still make a mistake at the last moment. They may not know if there is a passphrase they need or how to restore the wallet or even which wallet software to use.
I believe that an inheritance plan should be like a backup plan, don't make something and hope it works, make sure the person who is counting on it will be able to do the job without revealing the seed any more than it needs to be.

Wetin go do your crypto, if anything happen to you ?Re: Topic title : who knows the pass phrase to your Bitcoin asset or investmentThese are similar topic that looks like your's. You would have just continue from there instead of creating a separate thread on that regard. How should a Bitcoin holder balance privacy and security with making sure their Bitcoin can still be recovered by the right person if they are no longer able to access it?
Is not as If we shouldn't be careful when dealing with our investment portfolio, yea it's important. But it's cool entrusting it to one of a family member mostly our kids, get them to know more of our investment stuff, perhaps they can make continuity when we are no more. But failure in doing that can jeopardize our investment holdings since no one can really recall we were in an investment before passing on. So it's important we make concrete arrangements cuz we can barely predict the future.
