They are not wrong here, it is risky, bitcoin included. It is sufficiently more secure than other cryptos and even traditional financial systems but is still very volatile. The risk with volatility reduces in the long term as the price is more likely to appreciate, but it's still one to take into account.
On the flip side this is positive news for cryptocurrencies. Even with the small sample size the fact that 26% to some degree favour the offering of crypto in retirement plan is positive news. That is 1 in 5 Americans being positive towards it, which makes up millions of people when we apply the data. I'm sure that number has to be up from what it was before.

That’s probably because no one wants to risk their retirement savings. Retirement age in the US is 67 and above, at that age if you don’t have your mortgage paid, and savings intact then you’re going to have a very hard time. For most people, being financially secure in retirement means keeping your pension safe and avoiding high risk investments.
Also, one thing you have to consider is the age of the people who participated in the survey, I’m guessing they are already in their forties and fifties. If the same survey was conducted on individuals in their twenties - thirties, I believe the result would be significantly different.

I wouldn't expect anything else that this, because of the volatility nature of this market no one will want to completely bet their lives on even Bitcoin itself, maybe BlackRock did, maybe micro strategy did but see what happened to ColdCard?
People who don't understand Bitcoin and the Blockchain very deeply would by now started to have a second thoughts, I will never blame people about this.
I feel crypto isn't completely there yet, do you know why I give Binance a kudos? When something bad happens they take responsibility, every crypto companies need to start doing this to boost people's confidence.

Ask the same questions 30 to 40 years from now when people in their 20s to 30s of today will reach the point of retirement. This research is interesting but it is a lot like asking the current United States Congress about Quantum technology. They would have NO idea what that even is.

From what I can see, the information provided in the table is vague. The sample size was not mentioned. Even age range was not specified. What was the methodology used to obtain the data? Just data out of thin air. If I were you I won't rely on such data.
If at all the numbers are true, then there are factors I believe may have influenced their view on crypto as risky investment:
- Security flaws by exchanges and wallets: This has resulted to so many crypto and bitcoin related scams, which has made users to loss coins (Example: Coldcard attack). The psychological effect of such events can prompt potential investors to think otherwise. I'd say they are ignorant and have failed to understand that these exchanges are just custodians and not bitcoin itself.
- Too many scam projects are created yearly in the crypto space just to enrich their creator. So after seeing this repeated pattern of rug pull and pump and dump schemes, it is quite understandable to see individuals view crypto as a high risk investment. Maybe if bitcoin was evaluated only on its own merit, the numbers would have been different (ie. Not generalising it to other crypto).

Well it's understandable that the majority of people see cryptocurrency as risky investments, even Bitcoin included. And while they aren't wrong it would be good to understand why the majority thinks that way.To my understanding people who see the risks in an asset may have had severe experiences with other cryptocurrencies. And while Bitcoin is also volatile, we can all agree that it has proven its worth as a store of value, and no amount of views or rates can change that. Even if it says 67% in 2022, and in 2026 it has increased instead, it's easy to say people will always have their opinions. That's why I like to bring out the fact that real adoption will still occur even within those who find it risky. It's just a figure it certainly doesn't determine people's motive towards cryptocurrency...
So perhaps this isn't really something new. Even if folks say it's risky for a retirement plan, those who understand the assets will certainly understand its risks and benefits that come along with it. Still I don't know for other altcoins, but compared to the rest, I too think Bitcoin should be differentiated from the word cryptocurrency so it wouldn't get mixed up with most shitcoins .That's all.....

It's not risky, it's volatile. If we compare Bitcoin to Gold, we can say that Bitcoin is more volatile than gold but that's because Gold's market cap is significantly higher than Bitcoin's market cap. It's like 1.5 trillion against 32 trillion. If gold loses 1 trillion dollars, it won't be significantly affected by if Bitcoin loses 1 trillion dollar, it will significantly be affected. If Bitcoin becomes an investment option for millions of people, it will only make Bitcoin less risky because it will result in flow of lots of money into its market cap, which will increase the price and stabilize Bitcoin further.

I do see Bitcoin as more of a new generation kind of currency that the older folks do not understand as much as the younger folks do, hence the confusion and categorization as cryptocurrency among other altcoins and shitcoins in the market. There's also the concern of how volatility and price swings affect the Bitcoin price and I understand the fear of having to keep retirement funds in Bitcoin only to find out that the price has dropped and of lesser value upon retirement. It's just fear though because I don't think Bitcoin would drop so much that the price would crash.
Another reason I see is the fact that scammers are hackers have done so much to make holding Bitcoin a serious task because a small mistake by a holder can mean loss of retirement benefits that has been laboured for over the years and there won't be anyone to hold responsible but oneself, so it's safer to assume the responsibility of holding retirement benefits in a safe place with third party that can be held responsible Incase of loss or foul play.

These are just raw stats but still favours cryptocurrency. I do see where you are coming from though since they just specified cryptocurrency in general and failed to separate BTC it would be easy for people to consider it risky as well. Crypto in general comes with high volatility risk, those who make use of it as a retirement plan normally would have a long term plan up ahead because they expect price to be volatile on a short term. If they had narrowed it down to a few lost of coins to pick from, I have no doubt Bitcoin would have more votes than any other coin.

There are two things I want to say. The first one is that I agree with those who are saying that the survey must have been conducted among people who are not very far from their retirement, which automatically makes it difficult for them to choose cryptocurrencies as an investment plan for their retirement because considering they understand everything about them or even the market itself, they would think that there is actually no guarantee that by the time they retire, their assets will have a significant value and they can simply sell them and use the money for the rest of their lives.
The second thing is that the survey doesn't talk specifically about Bitcoin, it's asking about all of them, including altcoins, and technically, even meme coins and shit coins are cryptocurrencies as well, so saying that cryptocurrencies are risky as an investment or savings plan for one's retirement is not a wrong statement, because they are, but if the survey had specifically asked about Bitcoin, and if the answerers had enough knowledge about it, the results would surely have been different.

Thats the thing 'crypto' really does have a bad image in the eyes of the general public - thanks to the thousands of $hitcoins which have been viewed upon as similar the the "wild west" on the 19th century America. There are still many people who cannot get past the negativity of crypto and see Bitcoin as something different. In terms of offering Bitcoin as a part of a pension plan of sorts, they need to realise that they can just go ahead and do it themselves, they dont need someone administering the scheme

The Americans prefer the stock market over the crypto market. It is Trump who has decided to preach about the crypto market to most of them. Some typical Americans don't really know what Bitcoin is all about. It's like a mystery to them lol . To them, investing in numbers is risky when the stock market is booming with profit. In addition, the rate at which Americans are victims of crypto scams has also affected their choice of investment for retirement.

NIRS survey is mainly focused on retirement security which put risk of retirement savings at the centre of it concern, current survey has it 77% record from the previous results of %67 which means a %10 increase from the previous year's survey, what I know is that such survey results will definitely end in negative since their thesis is crypto and not bitcoin, when cryptocurrency is the main thesis it will definitely be broader categorization bitcoin among other altcoins being grouped as one, but a more clearer response will come if bitcoin is mentioned as the main asset for retirement, there will receive more positive responses. What we should agree with also is that most of the working class in America that chooses bitcoin as retirement savings are already accumulating bitcoin in an informal way of investment against retirement.

The biggest challenge here and why most of them voted against it will be its volatility, which is true nobody will actually want to put their years of retirement savings on that kind of risky investment. And I’m sure even if they survey was done amongst the people aged between 20-30 years it wouldn’t also make much difference as some people here have thought.
Bitcoin will actually be less risky though compared to other cryptocurrencies but it’s always being generalised when issues like this are being discussed. and it will be better if the distinction is made Clear, bitcoin volatility has reduced compared to its earlier days.

I do not know the reason bitcoin is not separated from cryptocurrencies, because many people see cryptocurrencies to be very risky and not have store of value characteristics.
Bitcoin is also risky; we can't say that it is risk-free. It is a digital currency that needs you to have a good understanding of it before you can have a good and successful investment with Bitcoin. That is why it is risky also, but it is far less risky than altcoins, and in this context, I think it should be separated so that they will not take it as the same thing because there is always a difference between Bitcoin and altcoins. In terms of retirement plans, Bitcoin investment is better than fiat or any altcoin due to its store of value that is always against inflation.

You're right there. Young adults are more tech-savvy and would likely to embrace the risk investing in crypto rather than adults who are almost on their retirement age. Their different views will definitely affect their decisions, that's why I'm not surprised why majority still end up seeing investing in crypto or let's say bitcoin if that's what they mean is risky. Yes, its clearly risky especially if you don't know how to play the game well, if you don't know how to invest well and apply proper risk management.

This survey does not surprise me. I wasn't expecting everyone to choose investing in Bitcoin over something more stable for retirement. Apart from the fact that those who are strongly against Bitcoin may not fully understand Bitcoin, another major reason behind their decision is that they believe that pension savings or investments should be less risky and not as volatile as cryptocurrencies (they must have pictured cryptocurrencies as shitcoins that can crash at any time). Well, there are still 26% who believe in Bitcoin; it is not entirely a bad report.
If they want to truly make these people happy, they can just give them the option of choosing how they want to invest their retirement funds: crypto or other options.

If you also ask me if crypto or bitcoin investment is risky, indeed it is. But I love it seeing that people are now slowly realizing the potentials of investing in bitcoin or crypto for retirement, 20% those who favor on bitcoin or crypto as a retirement is already huge, that simply means that in the years to come, more people will be hooked into bitcoin most especially if they have seen or heard successful stories about bitcoin as a retirement investment.
This survey simply tells the truth, bitcoin or crypto investment has definitely its own risk. In fact, they are actually more risky than other retirement investments in the market, but its also undeniable that bitcoin investment comes with bigger potential profits especially if you invest in bitcoin with high knowledge and discipline, and with good risk management.

I think the biggest reason why the nation is facing a retirement crisis because majority of these people are staying on their safe zone, as if avoiding taking risk will make them profitable either, but it only made them lose more and face bigger retirement crisis in the long run.
But if they apply risk management in every risky investment like bitcoin, they will gain a good and profitable retirement. I honestly believe its actually a matter of old mindset over risk taking. I understand that these people are fearful to lose their hard-earned money, but as they say, no risk no gain. So at least they should know how to balance their decisions in life.
