I have been longing to ask; it seems that what is regarded as bitcoin adoption have shifted from every day utility to institutional involvement.
If institutions hold billions in bitcoin waiting for the right time to sell, is it a better adoption than widespread every day usage?
By institutional Involvement I meant; Institutional investors, ETFs, companies holding bitcoin, banks in bitcoin; While, By everyday utility I meant; people using bitcoin for payments, casinos accepting bitcoin, remittances, cross-border payments etc. I confess that when I read everything you wrote, the following question came to mind:" in the past, how many people intended to use Bitcoin as a means of payment and not for hodl? "If we go back in time, something like a few years from now, you'll see that for many years the idea of people has always been to buy Bitcoin to hold for many years, and that's why they always wanted more institutional investors to enter the market so that the price would rise significantly. I wonder how many people use Bitcoin only as a means of payment; it probably isn't even 100 people. People look at Bitcoin like they look at gold, something they should buy to hold for many years and profit greatly later. There's nothing wrong with that, and at this point, I highly doubt that someone who has 1 Bitcoin will spend it all on buying things in the real world while they have the same amount in fiat currency in their bank account. Most likely, she will use the money she has in her bank account to buy things in the real world and will continue holding.

Hmm honestly I'm hard to choose about which one is better because both test different theses of Bitcoin, institutions hold that Bitcoin as an asset that will be maintained in the long run to store value while everyday use it means someone uses Bitcoin as money (means of payment), both have different purposes although both forms of adoption. But on the other hand, in general, most people prefer to make Bitcoin as a store of value in the long term and has proven to be profitable. Do we really need to choose? I have never differentiated between the two forms of adoption. Whether one chooses to buy and hodl bitcoin for a very long time or see bitcoin more as money, it is because they saw value in it and used it how they value bitcoin. Institutional investors may be seen as a group of people just using bitcoin for profits, but we cannot deny they have been a very useful tool in driving acceptance among people who look up to them and in turn drive more adoption in different areas. Instead of trying to separate them, I would rather say that a combination of the two is what makes bitcoin adoption beautiful; you keep some as a store of value and use some for everyday utility. None is more important than the other.

I don't think that bitcoin adoption means just using it normally through regular transactions. And even if you buy bitcoin through ETF, you don't directly own bitcoin or get direct ownership. In terms of bitcoin adoption, the most important role is played by the common people. Some of them are trading, some are holding it for long-term investment purposes. If someone receives payment for an online job in BTC, later they buy it directly from their BTC wallet through Bitcoin to buy something they need daily. Some are trying to keep their assets safe through Bitcoin holding for security and freedom. All these things are part of bitcoin adoption. But when a big institution starts holding bitcoin or they approve it, an additional trust is created among people. And for this reason, such institutions or public figures or government's positive thoughts or approval about bitcoin act as a positive influencer in bitcoin adoption. And if they keep spreading negative things, then the opposite can also happen. Although it has become difficult to influence bitcoin now.

Either way can be said of good adoption and that's to be expected when they are going to sell. And just like them, there's also us that at a right time we have to sell when it's needed to be done. By institutional Involvement I meant; Institutional investors, ETFs, companies holding bitcoin, banks in bitcoin; While, By everyday utility I meant; people using bitcoin for payments, casinos accepting bitcoin, remittances, cross-border payments etc.
Why not just have them both? we've seen both of this type of ownership and adoption. But the longer one is with the casinos. They're one of the first enterprises that have adopted it. That's why if it's there's one industry that have contributed that much to its growth, those are the early casinos that adopted BTC.

For me it’s daily use of Bitcoin if you want to consider it as real adoption. But it’s not going to be easy adaptation due to various reasons, like transaction fees and the duration being a very important fact. Nowadays merchants allow making payments through various crypto, including stablecoins, and users seem to be using other cryptocurrencies instead of Bitcoin. Right now institutions seem strongly involved with Bitcoin and accumulating as well. More likely people start considering Bitcoin as an investment asset more than daily use. That’s why Bitcoin starts moving up when institutional investors start accumulating Bitcoin.

Both buying and hodling contributes to Bitcoin's value and adoption. We don't really have to choose and you are right about that. Because, someone can decide to buy and hodl at a time, which can serve different purposes for them. That is what entices people to invest in Bitcoin. But, it's still important for one to understand how it works, so they can be able to do the right thing and make an informed decision in their own interest, rather than making a decision based on other people's points of view, which can negatively affect their plans and mindset towards investing in Bitcoin.

People can choose whatever use case they want either a store if value, inflation hedge or daily peer-to-peer transactions, all these options have their roles to play in the progress of Bitcoin so there shouldn't be any need to choose which is better. Although i value buying and holding cause of the future benefits but then anyone can decide to use their coin for whatever purpose they wish to use it for.

Adoption doesn't define itself or differentiate based on what people do with Bitcoin. Adoption simply means that people are choosing to use or invest in Bitcoin in the first place. Banks, ETFs, governments, institutions, and ordinary people like you and me all play a role in Bitcoin adoption. So it isn't necessarily about who is adopting it, but whether they are adopting it at all. That said, the type of adoption matters. When most institutional players are primarily investing in Bitcoin for long term returns rather than using it for everyday transactions, it can push Bitcoin more toward being viewed as a store of value and less as a medium of exchange. But it won't matter much, as long as a significant number of people continue to use Bitcoin for actual transactions, circulation will still take place. So investment driven adoption and transactional adoption can exist at the same time, even if they contribute to different aspects of Bitcoin's role in the economy.

If institutions hold billions in bitcoin waiting for the right time to sell, is it a better adoption than widespread every day usage? ~ After many years in this space, I have learned that "adoption" was never an either-or choice. Institutions buying in gives Bitcoin the bulletproof legitimacy it needs to stay unbanable, while real-world remittances and Layer 2 payments keep it borderless and usable. Money has to prove itself as a store of value first before anyone is going to spend it on daily coffee, so Wall Street capital is just step one of the process.

This made me ro remember Metaolanet thread, many people were disappointed that an institution that bought Bitcoin want to sell, some comments are funny and some sounds like bait to hear other people's opinion. Institutionals are not your friend, maybe institution that are within crypto tech can be consider as very long term but you see all these companies, they are profit mandate. They are the profit makers of Bitcoin, they only care about the profit they can from Bitcoin. By institutional Involvement I meant; Institutional investors, ETFs, companies holding bitcoin, banks in bitcoin; While, By everyday utility I meant; people using bitcoin for payments, casinos accepting bitcoin, remittances, cross-border payments etc.
You know what Bitcoin need, lets have governments approval that they have recognize Bitcoin as legal tender and watch the market cap between now and the end of the month, we will have 10 times of this price approach before the but it's not and for that you can't force adoption to people that are not interested in Bitcoin. There are some parents even in 2026 that have not heard of Bitcoin, it's because we lack adoption to ha e awareness for everyone.

Institutions holds bitcoin for their betterment, and they primary objectives to hold bitcoin for long-term is to sell and make profit, so, it's obvious that the Institutions always think of what they will benefit in future...And the process of holding bitcoin for long run, it's also an adoption, at the moment they hold bitcoin, neither directly and indirectly, they have adopted bitcoin in one way to the other....
Someone who's transacting with bitcoin daily or weekly, can also be said that it has adopted a bitcoin, because, once it summon the courage to accept bitcoin on his daily transactions, it means it have value on bitcoin, so I will prefer someone who is transacting with bitcoin daily as the real person that adopted bitcoin.....

It depends on what people want on a larger scale. If the majority wants Bitcoin to just grow in value so that they can make money from its movements, then institutions or whales buying and holding large numbers of coins can do good because that will reduce the available supply in the markets, and as the demand increases, the value will increase automatically. This basically what is happening right now, because mainstream utility is way lower than institutional adoption or people buying and holding bitcoins for profits. On the other side, if the majority would want that Bitcoin should be used more as a currency for making payments than an investment asset, then I guess that will automatically happen over time, because it's not that if institutions are involved, there won't be enough bitcoins for people to use for making payments, there will always be enough in the mainstream market for utility and there will also be enough for institutions or people to buy and hold, so both things can happen simultaneously without any problems.

Years ago, it was in the discussion of the forum about asking what if the government and institutions start to adopt Bitcoin. Now, that question has been answered and became a reality for most. So, as long as there's an adoption that's happening, we should recognize and be happy with it. Satoshi's main goal is to have an alternative that there's no central authority for our money and it has also happened. But the variety of Bitcoin's usage has naturally grown and from being a currency, to becoming an asset and a store of value and now an important part of these big financial companies portfolios.

Bitcoin is a currency whose use you cannot confine to a specific frame, especially now people are using Bitcoin as a strategic reserve in various institutions, even ETFs, personal holdings, etc. I like it the most that Bitcoin will be used as a strategic reserve of a country like gold in the future and it will become the center of a competition. The country that can hold as many Bitcoins as possible will be one of the countries in terms of power and abundance. However, the purpose for which Bitcoin was created will no longer be limited to borderless transactions. It will be used in various ways in the future and with the popularity of Bitcoin, this usefulness of use will someday take Bitcoin to unique heights.

I don’t think by any definition, institutional involvement has being seen to be the benchmark for adoption. What happens here is, building in the mind of potential investors the need to trust in the experience and expertise of institutional investors to never go wrong on their investment choices and taking a note from their page, they can go about making their own individual investments. It’s a place of trust in a project that has no securities. That’s what is derived from institutional involvement.

The idea of Bitcoin was to gives financial freedom, but I think on investment aspect is better than daily use. If we use Bitcoin daily, it will bring more adoption, but holding for long will defines Bitcoin for its purpose which is store of value and financial freedom.
Yes bitcoin holding defines the store of value advantage but that was still not the only core reason why it was created. Written on the whitepaper we can clearly see that it was for peer to peer transaction and this well defines the process of daily usage and holding bitcoin and selling just at once is not peer to peer transaction, so this particular reason for bitcoin will easily die off if bitcoin is looked at as an investment tool for holding only. But the reason why we cannot also fault holders is that bitcoin wasn’t defined as a currency but rather as money and in this aspect means that bitcoin can either be a for investment or for daily transactions and it bows down to the users choice of use and that’s where I think part of its financial freedom comes in. As for institutional involvement, I will still say it’s part of the adoption, because we all know that the big players wouldn’t see this features with bitcoin as still back off, safe to say that same thing happen to gold and for its long time existence this hasn’t killed it.

If institutions hold billions in bitcoin waiting for the right time to sell, is it a better adoption than widespread every day usage?
It depends. Not only on the type of investor, but also what you'd consider "better". You probably use "better" in the sense of "higher price". Everyday usage mainly increases liquidity. This means that as long as demand grows faster than supply, a stable but slower-feeling uptrend. If the institutions try to ride waves of bull and bear markets, even if it's a relatively long term wave (let's say some institution hodling from 2020 to 2030), they will exaggerate volatility. This means: You may have a higher price spike every now and then, but also will fall deeper in the moments many of these institutions sell. The recent treasury companies who invested in the middle of the 2025 bull and now went bankrupt having to sell at a loss are a good example of this. If the institutions however have a "contrarian" investment plan - buying when there's blood in the streets and selling at spike - they contribute in the same way than everyday usage. This means they're boosting liquidity too. And thus they also act in a "stabilizing" way. I think that for the long term trend a stable uptrend has more potential. Only if Bitcoin stabilizes a bit (but still preserves its uptrend) we will see it conquer the spheres of gold and become viable as an international currency. And thus only then I expect really prices of several hundreds of thousands, or even a million USD per BTC.

Hehehehe certainly the better type of adoption for bitcoin is to be used as a medium of exchange. These bitcoin maximalists in the forum who tell you that this is a store of value and that you should buy this as an investment are using this as a speculative investment. I am not arguing that using bitcoin as a speculative investment this is bad. However, you are asking what is better for adoption and this is certainly to use bitcoin as a medium of exchange.

In my opinion, the true adoption of Bitcoin is through its use in daily payments as an alternative to the current banking system and not just holding it in the long term to make profits when the price rises.
But at the same time, we cannot ignore the fact that the use of Bitcoin in large quantities by institutions to hedge against inflation and as a strategic reserve can be considered part of the adoption because it keeps Bitcoin somewhat stable and makes volatility less and manipulation more difficult.

I think it's up to the individual preferences of both individual and institutional users. Every user who adopts Bitcoin has their own plans and goals, and they don't necessarily have to dictate what they should do with their adopted Bitcoin. I don't blame individual and institutional Bitcoin adopters for not using it as a means of payment in transactions; they adopt it to profit when the selling price reaches a certain percentage of their purchase price. I believe Bitcoin is free to use, and the freedom afforded to Bitcoin users is a positive factor.
