You can never do anything good by copying your competitors' business models. Your competitors are always upgrading their plans and trying to grow their businesses in new ways. At that time, if you follow your competitors without using your unique strategy, you will always be a few steps behind them. You can take some ideas from your competitors, but copying them will not be very good for your own business.

What is happening in other businesses can actually be a clue to personal branding but doing exactly the same thing could mean that your business will fail even before the idea originators business will fail. No doubt copying might help but to stand the test of time is to be idea driven which is usually lacked in copying copying.

Does copying actually make someone to stand test of time? When a person understands the difference between the original and the imitation, how long will the imitation last before the customer gets tired? Sometimes I start emagining how people will turn copy cat just because they see their friend or neighbors growing or doing pretty well, without learning the secret behind it. One thing About business I like is that copying your fellow business person does not make both of you same, there are things that makes the business person spectacular or special that the copy cat can't do.

The question I have about is how many people you know are running failed businesses because they copied another person? Because I've seen people doing things that others are doing and they are progressing pretty well.

I will actually say sometimes it is good to follow the trend in business because customers are very much interested in trend. The most important thing is to deliver good services and quality products to customers. You have bring a very nice suggestion, this is what an entrepreneur do to withdraw people's attention to his product, I think the best thing we should always think of anytime we want to venture into anything, is that we should always prepare ourselves to think above what others are already doing, because doing the same thing as they did we eventually make you below them, because no one will noticed you since they have already seen what you have been doing ever since you started. You’re very correct, most brands are making mistake of copying their competitors because they feel that’s the only way they can grow. The moment you start copying  everything from competitors it will be very difficult for people to even have any reason why they should choose your brand.

As far as I have seen, new business owners just calculate profits in advance but do not calculate losses or risks. A new business owner does not have the huge budget or manpower that established companies have at the very beginning.  For example a big shop may be able to offer discounts or advertisements worth thousands of dollars every day, which is never possible for a new businesses. I think a new business should study about their competitors in the market and try to understand what customers actually want and what type of problems they are solving, and what problems are still unsolved; then they should try to use that information to make their own identity and attract their own clients.
