It really fascinates me how can a person do such thing to an extent just because of gambling. He not only wasted the time and effort of the police, but he also lied to his parents big time. He is still young and still has a long future ahead of him yet he is already in such situation. For the parents, it’s so hard to accept how can your child do that to you for money.
Some kids do not understand the extent of their actions; this is why they choose to engage in certain activities without considering how big a repercussion can come out from such. I feel this is something common for Gen Z and children of the newer generation who may be quicker to act on their impulses than millenials and older people who have the understanding that actions have consequences.

Proper parenting will put children in a position where they understand that their actions have consequences, and if such a child has been properly parented by their parents and kept under a watchful eye, I doubt that they'll be able to pull up such an action without first considering the consequences and knowing that what they're about to do is totally not worth it.

I just watch this on our local news where a college student allegedly got kidnapped and the kidnappers were asking for P300,000 or around $4,700
It was also stated by the news report that the alleged kidnapper only gave them 2 hours to give them the ransom money so his parents immediately asked the police help. Fortunately the police were able to locate him immediately in a hotel alone. After the police tracked the cctv, they found out that the student went to the hotel alone and there was no kidnapping that happened.

The Phillipine government mandated all establishment to set up a CCTV and every baranngays have CCTV's install so the police works made easy by just back and forward tracking, you must be so addicted to gambling to do such foolish thing to your parents.

If we thought that it can happen in movies it can also happen to real life all because of gambling addiction.
The parents should rehabilitate their son he is sick and immature to do this and after that maybe let him spend in jail to learn a lesson.

He is still young and still has a long future ahead of him yet he is already in such situation. For the parents, it’s so hard to accept how can your child do that to you for money.

Gambling and online lending apps are really a great combo to destroy your life. With OLA, it’s easy to keep borrowing money which can tempt you to gamble more and more, thinking it’s easy to get money. But the more you do it, the more your digging yourself deeper with gambling addiction and debts.

Normally, gambling with all the money one has to the point of getting broke is dangerous. Getting a loan to gamble is even more extremely dangerous, but I'm not surprised by this story because gamblers who are addicted can do everything to meet their urges.

If a gambler can go to the extent of borrowing money to gamble and then fabricating a kidnapping story to get money from his family, it means this particular addiction is very severe and dangerous. People should learn to gamble with the amount they can afford and also have a threshold for gambling because addiction is very dangerous.

He is a college student, so I also wonder how he was able to borrow from a lending app without a stable source of income. If he was approved, I doubt it was a very huge amount. That’s why I think the bigger issue is not really the debt itself. If he already reached the point of staging a fake kidnapping just to get money from his parents, then his gambling problem may already be very serious.

At that point, it looks less like he is simply trying to pay a loan and more like he is desperate to keep feeding the gambling habit.
I am from Nigeria. Lending apps are a very common thing in my country. Majority of these lending apps offer non-collateral loans to their customers. There are also student loans available to interested applicants. Getting these kinds of loans are not something difficult to do, there are very little verification processes and no hindrances at all. It is even bad that your phone can be stolen and the thieves can use your mobile to borrow huge amount of money from your loan app registered in your name. I am just letting you know that it is possible to get a loan even if you do not have a stable source of income.

This news is not new, irresponsible gamblers can do anything all for gambling. Faking their own kidnap, being in debt and others are  just the few things irresponsible gamblers can do to gamble.

When someone faces extreme financial pressure, they might do something foolish. Especially if they are young and don't fully consider the consequences. This is no longer a rare occurrence; in just the last three years, I have easily come across several cases involving fabricated crime scenarios designed to elicit sympathy, where the targets were people close to the perpetrators, including their superiors at work.

The world never stop surprising us, I had seen a similar one in the past like a grandpa kidnapping a kid and seeking ransom from the kid but here the kid himself did that, we are progressing in the worst way. Smiley

It is not just gambling, but lack of accountability and we can do anything as long as we get what we want, this is the mindset of the new kids who are growing and parents have a big role in it, they can shape the kids in the right way or we are in shithole already.

Entangled in online loans because of gambling --- deceiving parents by pretending to be kidnapped just because of gambling? What kind of news is this, a very stupid act of the student.

He may think his parents will redeem him directly without thinking about reporting to the police, this kind of news is already a lot due to gambling addiction, they will do crazy things to get money any way, it's very sad what the student did.

I saw this news earlier and it's just sad that he can do this kind of modus to his parents. The suspect took the evil path and tricked his parents but was discovered, good thing that his parent was smart enough to contact the authorities that has the power to locate the suspect. This is how far he can get with his gambling addiction. Imagine, he took loans from lending application that are know to collect high interest just to sustain his gambling addiction.

This is just dumb and absolute evil. I hope his parents wont bail him out of the prison or at least make him realize what he just had done.

Because of what he did, he got arrested because the police used their time and put effort to finding them but it’s just all fake.
Sure, intentionally raising a false alarm is a crime, especially when it has the potential to affect someone negatively, imagine the trauma he had to put his own parents through because he wanted to get money from them, chances are that even if he had succeeded something like this would have happened again in the future, maybe no longer a kidnapping case but something else to steal money with.
We should make sure to limit our gambling to what we can afford to lose, if it goes beyond that then it becomes a real problem like this case where someone just tried to rob their own parents because of gambling and debt.

It really fascinates me how can a person do such thing to an extent just because of gambling. He not only wasted the time and effort of the police, but he also lied to his parents big time. He is still young and still has a long future ahead of him yet he is already in such situation.
Based on how you feel fascinated by what the person did, I believe you're not gambling addicted, and I'm happy for you because what the young man did is something everyone who's gambling addicted can do without having any remorse once they achieve whatever they wanted to fuel their addiction.

For the parents, it’s so hard to accept how can your child do that to you for money.
I know this is hard for the parents but I think they should be happy they know this now so that they can work towards the boy getting the needed solutions to be free from gambling addiction.

Gambling and online lending apps are really a great combo to destroy your life. With OLA, it’s easy to keep borrowing money which can tempt you to gamble more and more, thinking it’s easy to get money. But the more you do it, the more your digging yourself deeper with gambling addiction and debts.
Whatever has an advantage will also have disadvantage.
We can't blame gambling being the game that gives people a chance for someone whose greed is their major problem.
For the loan apps, I think the Phillipines government needs to check their model of service and look into their interest rate maybe they loan sharks.

That's gambling addiction on the highest level. If a person can go that far just to satisfy his or her addiction, it means it will be difficult to recover from it.

Debts and committing fraud just to get more money. Worse, you do it to your loved ones and won't even feel anything after you do it. This is a criminal mind and not something a normal person can do easily. It gets easier for them as they do it over and over again, and I bet they do not even feel a thing anymore when they gamble. Even winning won't be that much fun anymore, unlike those who are just gambling just to feel the excitement of risking some money.

Not the first time that we have heard absurd news of someone doing stupid things because they are drown in gambling debts. We seen news about a lady bank teller who deceived a elderly women's saving because of her gambling addiction.

The worst thing about this news is that the individual involved is just a minor. And yet, he has been in gambling debts, meaning and I don't mean it in the bad way as the Philippines could be one of the worst proliferation of casinos and even if the government is doing something about the issue, it's hard to stop now.

Seems like something that has been going on for a long time. Desperation leads people to desperate measures. It’s sad really, somebody who resorts to something like that involving their own parents really needs help and likely a form of punishment too. He’s not the first and he won’t be the last.

A person is responsible for his actions. The student who did such a thing is responsible for himself and should be punished. He lost money in gambling but he cheated the law enforcement agencies and his family. A cheater should definitely be punished. In gambling, there will only be wins and no losses that can not be, it is normal for those who gamble only to win. In this case, I do not blame the gambling platform, but the one who is addicted and the one who is cheating is responsible for all this. It may be that he is not gambling or may be spending that money on drugs or some other activity but gambling is being blamed. Therefore, the matter should be carefully monitored and brought to the public.

This is not a new thing, as far as I remember, 2-3 years ago, there was an incident in my area where a few friends planned a plan where a boy tried to extort money from his father by pretending to be kidnapped. Later, when the matter was exposed, the reason why they wanted to extort money came to the fore. They themselves confessed that they had planned such kidnappings to raise money for drugs and gambling. This is a really sad incident and if every addicted gambler has this kind of tendency, then the matter will become more serious in the near future.

It really fascinates me how can a person do such thing to an extent just because of gambling.

People in situations of gambling addiction and being in debt only think about ways to make money quickly, either to pay off debts or to fund their gambling accounts. Usually, people with addictions start by borrowing money from friends and family. But when the reason for borrowing money no longer works because everyone knows about the addiction, the addict will think of other ways to make money. It's just that I also can't imagine how that person could think of staging their own kidnapping.

I agree that using all sorts of lending apps to fund your gambling habits/addiction is a recipe for disaster, but I equally blame the parents for their failure to identify such issues in their early stages [SMH]!
- FWIW, those OLAs should also be blamed for not implementing stringent rules on their platforms (they're indirectly contributing to such issues)!

This news made me remember how a lady faked her own kidnap in my country just to get money to fund her fake lifestyle. Incidents of this nature are nothing new in my country as people now fake their own kidnap just to collect ransome from their parents, friends and relatives. They don't care but some of them gets bursted and arrested by the security operatives for faking their own kidnap just to extort money from the public.
As for the boy who faked his own kidnap just to get money to gamble, it is true he is kind of addicted otherwise I see no reason for him to have done such just to cornly get money Ron his parents. Addiction is real gamble responsible for fun and with funds you can afford to lose.

Most of the stories you will ever come across that has to do with gambling ruining peoples lives in a way or the other, you will end up seeing that the problem isn't with gambling but with their habits, these people cultivate very reckless and indiscipline habits towards gambling and expect some magic, then at the end of the day they blame it on gambling that they go ruined. I will say it over and again, gambling is most often neutral in most of the situations, the gamblers are most times the problem on a second check. if you have the discipline and control enough to quit when you find out you are not getting lucky as expected again, you most likely will not get to the point of ruin, but holding onto some sort of delusion gets you to ruin.

Gambling to the point of getting a loan to continue funding the habit is an obvious sign that the person was already an addict, Before getting to the point of addiction, it is clear this person has indulged in this for quiet some time, so i can say for a fact that Gambling obviously is not the problem but the personality of these individuals will most times lead to their ruin as gamblers.
