College student? isn't He old enough to know the risks of gambling? His actions already include offenses or criminal. He is already an adult and knowingly committed fraud. I don't think there's anything to defend him for.gambling addiction is a risk. But with this case should be a warning to the government to be more assertive in combating gambling. Because the impact of addiction has harmed many parties, namely parents,campus and also the police.
He deserves to be punished, because his fraudulent actions have consequences to be accounted for by himself.
Let's hope the college student in question isn't one of those spoiled brats that the parents give everything to and care little about their warfare because of their busy schedules chasing after money or promotions in their work place or business.

Am not surprised at such an incident because this ain't the first time I have read something similar and is just a warning to parents and guardians to be mindful of the activities their wards or children engage in and try as much as possible to restrict their privacy to some degree, so as to keep tabs on the children so they don't become victims to wayward life as is this case.

It really fascinates me how can a person do such thing to an extent just because of gambling. He not only wasted the time and effort of the police, but he also lied to his parents big time. He is still young and still has a long future ahead of him yet he is already in such situation. For the parents, it’s so hard to accept how can your child do that to you for money.
It is nothing but a classic hallmark of someone leading a psychopathic double life. If you look at the news, you will find children murdering their parents for money, so these kinds of stories are not surprising. He elaborated a hoax and thought he was smart enough to evade everyone—just like all criminals—but got caught in the end.

When i was still in college and still couldn’t control my gambling addictions i told a lot of lies to my parents just to get money for my upkeep because most of the money they sent to me back then for upkeep i lost to gambling, mostly on cards, cheese and sports gambling, then i didn’t have self control over my gambling urge and it made me go through hell back then in college because i was mostly looking unkept after spending all my upkeep money on gambling, there were times when i even had to give out my cell phone as a collateral to collect loan from my friends and continue gambling, so i know how addictive gambling can be and am not surprised hearing different instances my only concern is that faking once kidnap just to get money to gamble or money to upset gambling debts is the height addiction, what if the student gets hurt in the process? What if the police gets involved only to find out that he faked his kidnap just to get ransom from parents? What if their parents gets to know about the faking? Sincerely gambling addiction is difficult to control and can pressure one into taken steps that they would mostly regret in the future.

It's  not irectly because of gambling. He's in debt and there're  ways to get into debt, Gambling is just one out of hundred .

Let's  assume it was a student loan debt instead of direct gambling (as he/she has mentioned), would it have changed anything if they  did same trick to payback  their debt? No.

At the end, most debt are as a result of gambling,you don't have to necessarily use a Casino or Betting platform to gamble, there are so many way to gamble including taking loans to start a business

They watched way too many Hollywood movies to get this idea,,, but obviously not enough IQ and common sense to pull it off. Kids always think they are smarter than parents  Grin

Actually with Bitcoin I am also surprised the younger generation seem to know even less than the oldies about security and seedphrase etc,,, at least on my experience like not a single young guy who had BTC in my small circle knew about these terms. All using apps.

This kind of story is not strange because gambling is making so many people to fumble, get indebted, and looking for a way of setting themselves free, and when it comes to student who depends on parents to get money the form all sorts of false stories just to extort money from their parents, love ones, and relations. Several times I heard stories of false kidnapping just to get money from parents, however I have also heard personal experience where a student living in the same compound with me called the parents he was locked in the police when there was nothing of such, and all was just to extort money from parents
Parents should be very careful with students, because they can even gamble with the money given to them for their up keep, and look cool lies just to recover that money.

Gambling and online lending apps are really a great combo to destroy your life.
It seems I have to correct your statement here.

Sometimes, in certain regions, there are arrangements between online gambling platforms and online lending companies. It is as if the online gambling platforms provide their users' data, along with their phone numbers, to the online lending companies. After that, the lending companies send messages to those phone numbers offering loans. Young people who do not think things through may then start borrowing money from these lending apps. They ignore the high interest rates they will have to pay.

Eventually, they become frustrated and trapped in debt, not knowing what to do to repay the loans. Some may even take desperate measures to cover all of their debts. This is one of the worst mindsets a gambler can have.

Loan apps can put you into a big debt if you don't have any source of paying back your loan because the interest rate is high. It's not about how much you borrow but the compounding interest to service the loan is always outrageous. I wouldn't advise anyone to take a loan from them.
Some of those apps are worse than street loan sharks; their policy is something else, which if you are not calm enough to read through it, you will end up falling into their trap, and aside from their interest being atrocious, it’s never advisable for someone to take a loan to gamble with since there is no guarantee for that money to come back, and when such money is lost to gambling, it will even be hard for the person to source money out to pay back while the interest will keep on growing, nonstop.

I just watch this on our local news where a college student allegedly got kidnapped and the kidnappers were asking for P300,000 or around $4,700
This is just one of those cases and reason why the government of many country is fighting so hard to regulate gambling. Young ones are not able to control themselves while gambling and this could create alot of problems for their future. His story only shows that a gambler can do anything to make sure he funds his gambling addict when he's very desperate. He didn't only deceive his parents, but also wasted the time of the authorities. Gambling like I will always say is not something that will elevate you from poverty so if you choose to gamble, it's either you do it for fun or just by choice and not put the idea of making profits first because that's the reason why many gamblers end up being din dept.

Through the OP information, it became clear to me that an addicted gambler can do all kinds of horrible or heinous things to raise money for gambling. The addicted person did not additional his parents to raise money for gambling, he created a story of kidnapping with himself through which his parents would quickly fall into his trap and save him from the hands of criminals by raising a big ransom money, which would make his plan successful, so he would get the money he gave, pay off the debt and gamble.

Gambling addiction is very dangerous and can destroy a person financially and mentally, which can ruin a gambler's beautiful life. Therefore, gambling is only for entertainment and within your means, not gambling with excessive risks and giving up aggressive mentality, which can help you control yourself and avoid gambling addiction.

~~~
I think the worse one I have seen was the case where a man staged the kidnapping of his own daughter and then contacted the wife and both of them had to look for the ransom in panic and at the end of the day it was discovered that the man faked the kidnapping and was simply just looking for money that he would use to sponsor his gambling habit and since he had no other way to generate it he went with the kidnapping plan, I can't recall what gave it away that the man was behind the whole kidnapping.
It is actually very scary to be honest, because to be able to do something like this, it means that they would be able to do other things that are way worse than this as long as it is able to get them the money needed to fund their account.
Back to the topic. It's a pity that addicted gamblers can go at any length just to feed their addiction. I wouldn't be surprised that assuming this boy succeeded in getting the money from his parents, he might not pay his debt but use the money to gamble. It's bad to fake your kidnap and put your parents under a lot of pressure.
Gambling can be the root cause of chid of that age faking his own kidnap therefore Puting his parents in unnecessary tension.
This sounds wired.
Pear group also is another reasons why such thought is nursed in the mind of a teenager of his age, it is an agreement between his friends and he must have initiated it with background information that the parents are either expecting money some where or has people who could help at the hearing of such information.
I read the news and I see he is a 19 year old, that makes him an adult and he is mature enough to gamble. The problem here is not gambling, rather it is ADDICTION.
Addiction spams across so many activities including gambling. It can make you do the unthinkable. The funny part is that one can be addicted to a particular activity without even knowing until it's too late. The best thing one can do for himself is to always reflect on their daily activities to watch out for any activity he or she is abusing because addiction will make you lose alot, if not discovered on time.
Although the situation created by the student is really a mess, it is much better than taking his own life.  I do not condone what the student did, but being pressured by the thought of the lending company coming after him can make this student paranoid.  Thinking the scenario where the kid decided to kill himself and the pretend to be kidnapped, the latter will give his parent lesser grief, although it makes them obviously nervous about the news of their kid being kidnapped.
Anyway, gambling addiction really makes any person's life a mess.  Coupled with debt and without any source of income, there is no way for this kid to pay for his debt unless he pulls a trick.  But sadly, he chooses this dirty trick rather than being honest with his parents about his problem and asking them for help.  Now the student, aside from gambling addiction and debt, is facing a lawsuit from the authority making his parents worry more.
Lesson in here is that, if we ever get into a messy situation, beng a student and has limited source of income to pay for debt, we should eat our pride, be humble, and be honest with our parents about our situation and genuinely ask them for help.
Anyway, gambling addiction really makes any person's life a mess.  Coupled with debt and without any source of income, there is no way for this kid to pay for his debt unless he pulls a trick.
The truth is even if you have a source or multiple sources of income and you become addicted to gambling, sorry for you, because all your income will likely go into it, there is no way around it.
Addicted gamblers do not view gambling as fun, they view it as a "get rich quick" scheme. Lets assume they earn 500 bucks in a month, they will tend to spend all they've got and possibly taking loans just for the sake of gambling. From this point of view you would agree with me that having a means of income will not save you so long as you are addicted to gambling. Personally, the best way around gambling is to set out a certain amount for it which I will never exceed for the month. It helps me prevent addiction alot.
It isn't common yet, but I can't say it's a rare situation today. Children always want money and have plenty of ideas on how to spend it, yet they lack honest ways to earn it. As a result, we see stories like this.
The main issue is that children don't know how to spend money wisely, so we need to teach them this useful skill.
which is the young adult who even conceived such a thought in his head and gathered up the courage to try to pull it out. Of course, it did not work; according to how he planned it, he could have possibly used that money not to repay loans taken because of gambling but could have used it to do other activities, and when that money is finished, they will plan another one, but as long as his statement has gambling in it, people will say his action is due to his addiction to gambling, which is wrong.
In our country, it's only an adult that can carry out this kind of plan and not some college kids. When I hear this kind of incidents, I first blame the parents, because how can a kid have the heavy mind to even think of such a plot. If parents teach their children good moral, it will be difficult for the child to even think about this because they already know that such attempt will hurt their parents and they won't want that to happen. Even if the idea was introduced by their friend, they will report it to their parents and what you said is true, if they had succeeded in this plot, they would have still repeated it again after spending the money.
