ReSatoshi
An independent Proof-of-Work blockchain with UTXO recycling

ReSatoshi is an independent SHA-256d blockchain based on Bitcoin Core 31.0. It starts from its own genesis block, with no inherited Bitcoin balances.

Its main feature is simple: unspent outputs eventually expire, and their value returns to circulation through mining.

ReSatoshi is not affiliated with Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin, or the Bitcoin Core project.

How recycling works

A transaction output is a piece of your balance that you can spend. These unspent outputs are called UTXOs.

  • Each output expires 5,256,000 blocks after its creation—about 100 years at the 10-minute target block time.
  • Expired value moves into the Recycle Pool.
  • Miners can receive up to 1 extra coin per block from that pool, limited by its available balance.

An output can still be spent in its expiration block. Spending it creates new outputs with new lifetimes. Sending coins to yourself works the same way once the transaction is confirmed.

Expiration applies to individual outputs, not your whole wallet. Opening your wallet does not reset it. Time is measured in blocks, not calendar years.

Recycling does not issue new coins. It redistributes previously issued value. This reward is separate from the normal block subsidy and transaction fees.

Network basics

  • Mining algorithm: SHA-256d
  • Target block time: 10 minutes
  • Difficulty adjustment: ASERT, with a 2-day half-life
  • Initial block subsidy: 50 coins, halving every 210,000 blocks
  • Recycle reward: up to 1 coin per block when the pool has funds; this limit does not halve
  • No premine or spendable genesis allocation
  • P2P port: 19333

Development

The goal is clear rules, reliable software, and code that people can inspect.

ReSatoshi aims to stay close to Bitcoin Core while maintaining its own network and recycling rules. Relevant upstream fixes are reviewed and tested before integration.

The source code is public. Anyone can run a full node to check the blockchain against the network’s rules.

Get started

The Windows wallet runs a full node and downloads and validates the blockchain.

Separate mining tools support solo CPU mining and pool connections, including TLS. Mining starts only when you choose to start it. Solo mining requires a synchronized local node.

SHA-256d is not ASIC-resistant. CPU mining may become uncompetitive as more efficient hardware joins the network.

Before you start

ReSatoshi is experimental software. There is no guarantee of value, liquidity, security, or mining profitability. Keep secure wallet backups.

Windows executables are unsigned and may trigger SmartScreen warnings. Verify downloads against the supplied SHA-256 checksums. A matching checksum confirms file integrity, not software safety.

BTC and sat labels inside the software refer to ReSatoshi units. ReSatoshi coins cannot be sent through the Bitcoin network.

About this thread

This post will be edited to keep the information clear and current; a short change log is kept at the bottom. Replies stay as a historical record. When an earlier reply becomes outdated, I will mark it with a correction note rather than delete it.

Anyone is welcome to run a node, mine, review the code, report issues, or contribute.

CPU solo mining is still possible, but finding a block is difficult when competing with ASIC miners. You may mine for a long time without finding one.

I run a small ReSatoshi community pool for anyone who wants to participate. When the pool finds a block, miners share the rewards based on their contributed work.

Pool details
    -Address: stratum+ssl://resatoshi-seed.duckdns.org:3338
-Fee: 2%, which also helps cover payout transaction fees
-Payouts: Automatic when your balance reaches the payout threshold

How to join

In the mining tool’s Mining Pool tab, enter the pool address and your ReSatoshi receiving address, then start mining.

Rewards may be small and may not cover electricity costs. Joining a pool does not guarantee earnings.

This is an independently operated community pool. Solo miners and other pools are welcome too!

Hey,
can i get a addnode? I´m still @ blockheight 0 and only connected to an outgoing full relais @ 58.123.125.154:19333... Thanks in advance!

What interests me is that, over the very long term, ReSatoshi wouldn’t need to keep tracking centuries-old unspent outputs as part of its active ledger state.
Once outputs expire after roughly 100 years, they no longer need to be maintained as spendable balances.
That could be a meaningful long-term advantage, even though storing and verifying historical blocks are separate issues.

The original block mode has been added to the main source code. It uses only components used by Bitcoin and is designed to validate UTXOs using the most recent 100 years of ledger history. While Bitcoin verifies records from the genesis block when validating the ledger from scratch, Resatoshi aims to limit the required history to the most recent 100 years. This allows older records to be deleted, reducing long-term storage requirements and the burden of verifying historical records.

The index mode periodically cross-checks the index against the UTXO set to detect inconsistencies. Comparing validation results between the two modes can help uncover errors that one implementation might miss and improve the reliability of network validation.

The main source has received a substantial update, including cleaner recycle-state storage, explicit pool balance and expiry undo records, stronger rollback and crash recovery, and expanded regression tests.

The network’s consensus rules remain unchanged, but the local storage format has changed. Existing node users need to back up their wallets and synchronize using a new data directory.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit (Oct 17): To be clear about timing — nodes running the previous version remain fully compatible with the network: they continue to sync, validate and mine normally, and there is no deadline to upgrade. Move to the new version whenever it is convenient for you; the new format is simply where future fixes and improvements will land. Whenever you do upgrade, back up your wallets first.

Thanks for setting up a pool, solarsurfer — an independently operated pool is exactly what the network needs, and I’m glad to see one.
