Little things you can do as citizens without waiting for government

We always want change, well, that's a good thing. But I want you to understand that change doesn't always start with the government or the president. So many huge improvements and development happens because ordinary people decided to fix small things right where they live. We can't leave all the work for the government, as citizens we should be able to contribute to our country and society in the little way we can. People hate me saying this, but government doesn't really necessarily need to do everything for you..

Here are some little things that we can do without the government.
Picking up some trash at your doorstep or your compound.. you don't expect the government to come your house to clean it for you. You should make it a routine, at least every weekend, observe a sanitation, pick up the trash and clear the Grasses. If everyone does this, the neighborhood will be really clean.

Clear small drainage/gutter covers near your house before it rains so that when it begins to rain, water won't flood the road with dirty, trash cans and rubbers.

Share extra food and clothes with people on your street that have less, government doesn't need to come from door to door to check up on people to know if they have eaten or not. But you can, there is always a poor hungry neighbor, instead of calling him a lazy folks, try to take out some of your food and give it to them to eat, they are humans like you, life has just been unfortunate to them. So you should be able to help them a little.

Check on older neighbors when they haven't been seen for a while. This are simple things that you can do, you don't have to spend hours with them, we all have old woman and men in our neighborhood, check up on them, ask them how they are doing, try to make them smile a little, these little kind gesture never goes unnoticed.

Teach little kids in your area some little skills, when you see them playing around and walking about, you can call them, organized a class to teach them how to read, spell and write, you can teach them how to repair little things like a bicycle tire or how to play sports.

Fill small porthole in your area, we don't need to wait until the road is totally demaged and we start calling and insulting the government, so when you notice that there is a small porthole, you just need to fill it, let's come together collectively and fix little problems like this.

Organized a neighborhood watch group where neighbors exchange contact to be in touch with each other and keep an eye on each other. Because sometimes when there is an urgent incident that requires the presence of the police, we all know how long it takes them to arrive at the scene, so we should always be security conscious towards each other. To prevent any unforseen situations.

Resolving quite dispute with neighbors face to face before involving the authorities, some small conflicts can be resolved within ourselves, not all issues requires us to go the the authorities to start writing statements or petitions.

Aside from the forementioned things we can do, there is this bond in my former neighborhood that extended to the whole street that I loved, like you said, they formed a group of landlords for each respective houses in the estates through out the streets and when issues like road development happens, we make contributions weekly until we got the money needed that we make the necessary repairs. That made the street easier for vehicles to navigate. I think that's one way we can help ourselves instead of waiting for the government

You are not the voice of the masses and so as you speak your mind, everyone is also entitled of their own opinion and when you try to persuade others believe your own, then you must be hated for that. Don't let yourself appear like one of the government agencies who covers up the incompetence of the government other wise, you will get hated again.

Hence, it is the duty of the government to take responsibilities of the welfare of the masses but as it stands, the government is a failure politicizing every sectors that the masses was supposed to be beneficiaries.
The truth is that since the government has lost its responsibilities, the masses should not fold their hands and perish out of incompetence of the leaders. So, there is every necessity for everyone to buckle up and prioritizes on providing for yourselves and make the society a comfortable place for ourselves. This is the reason why it is also said that security is a duty for everyone after the security agencies had aldo failed to protect us.

Perhaps even as an individual who struggles to create amenities for ourselves, the government does still have the power to decide for us which is why even as a private business sectors you still need approval of the authorities and so on, we get extorted by the taxes we are deemed to pay to the authorities.

Relying on the authorities is just a waste of time because they don't make you and the societies a priority as it was supposed to be.

If the citizens do all you mentioned it means that the Government don't have any work to do again because everything you just mentioned is the Government responsibility.

You don't expect people to use their money to fix up the roads when the government already have budget for it, doing it is telling the Government to embezzled the money allocated for such projects, the money the Government keeps borrowing what are they using it for i believe this is what you should asked.

It's the Government responsibility to ensure basic amenities to the citizens and also make sure they have the interest of the citizens comes first.

Bro you should understand that there is what we call corporate social responsibility of individuals in a community, individuals in their own benevolence can decide to give back to their community, however in doing so they are not compelled or under any law that they must do this things, is out of show of charity that they do some of these things. Also you must understand that the government has its own responsibility, so you cannot tell the citizens to start doing what government is supposed to do because the citizens pay tax to the government, so for things that the government is supposed to do like providing electricity, good infrastructure and healthcare, so for such situations you don't tell the citizens not to wait for the government because these are their own responsibility.

Keep the street clear from trash and check the other people is good but it is not going to help the country to grow in any way and people want their government to provide for themlike create job opportunities, create the corrupt free system and collect fair tax rare and as individual we can't so many things that is why we formed something called government and paying taxes for it.

I agree that citizens should try to contribute to the community but I think this idea should not be used as excuse for government to avoid their own responsibilities. It is good to be a responsible citizen by keeping your surroundings neat and clean but fixing public roads, cleaning the drainage system, providing security and managing waste is not the responsibility of an individual; it is government that is responsible for all of these thing because citizens have paid their taxes to them for these services. These types of things require proper planning and equipment. Sometimes when citizens try to repair public infrastructure they can create bigger problems if they do not have necessary amount of authority and knowledge.
The best way is to have cooperation citizens should take care of their responsibilities while they can also demand that government institutions perform their duties.

Those are minor changes and individual impact to the society. Major changes start from those in power. Those in power have access to government funds, revenue, budget, and other finances. That money should be used to create major changes in society. In return, everyone has to contribute to society in the little way they can.

President Kennedy talked about this in his Inaugural speech, he said 'ask not what your country can do for you, ask what can you do for you country. Citizens who agree or think alongside what President Kennedy said are the Innovators and stewards, those who create new things and those who do tasks like the Op shared. It will be highly disappointing when you decide to place your life in the government to be successful in life. There are things we can also take steps to do, and if we don't limit ourselves, the future is always promising to make us proud of every step taken. One thing people don't understand is that they can also be employers of laborers; if they make the required sacrifice, there is no limit to how far we can go in life or to pursue an ambition as long as we are determined to do it.

Every government with the interest of citizens at heart never forget to carry out there constitutional duties and some of this duties are to take care of there environments, create employment opportunities to help put food in the table of all citizens and so on. But because the government fails to carry the interest of citizens at heart they always neglect there duties leaving the citizens with no option than to keep extending hands so all can be carried along.

Looking out for our environment and people around us is a very good move to help create a conducive environment for ourselves  but should not be considered a reason for our government not to  take up there duties as it is meant to be. Yes citizens had the right to contribute in anyway they can at their environment but the major job goes to the government when we talked about transformation but why those duties are neglected is what i don't know.

I have a habit of picking sharp objects off the road. Sometimes, when you walk on the street, there are sharp objects like broken bottle pieces, nails, and sharp iron. I am aware that children are not careful and could step on these sharp objects, which can harm them. 

Motor vehicle tires also pick up these sharp objects, which could damage them. Most of the time I have issues with vehicles tire, its always nails.

So I am contributing to society by ensuring that I remove any of these objects I see when I am walking on the road.

There are some things you can do as citizens without even waiting for the government, but it's not a must. Checking on the elderly in your neighbourhood is a good one, but when it comes to amenities, it's the responsibility of the government to provide for the citizens because if we do most of the things, the money they took for such projects will go to their personal use. Even though we don't do most of these things, they still embezzle money and talk more about doing what is supposed to be the government's responsibility. I don't have a problem when responsibilities are shared in neighboring areas. I am the type that loves contributing to the environment and sees that things are properly taken care of. But the more we are allowed to keep doing all these things it is the more freedom we are giving the government to do as they like. That's not how things were programmed to be.

The right of every citizen is to have access to the basic amenities left in the hands of the government to provide. To maintain those amenities and see that they are well taken care of is where the citizens can come in to help. We all have our roles to play in society. The government has theirs. When one is not doing their job, the other feels cheated.

It's a personal choice and that wouldn't change anything because how much do you have to repair road feed the poor and the rest. Just do what you can and don't take it as a burden upon yourself. It's good to care for people but not to the point of repairing pot holes. It's only someone working that comfortably donate funds but when there is a high level of unemployment and inflation, you will have little to survive with.

I have a speaker magnet with a belt run through it, that I periodically swing over alleyway (less traffic, more negligent contractors). There are wheeled magnet sweepers, but you gotta make sure you get one that's low enough to the ground & with a powerful magnet block, so things can't resist being zapped onto it & stay zapped until you wipe it clean.

Many if these things you mentioned are things you are meant to do even in a functional government society, these are just what is expected of your especially the not leaving your trash around, you can use a bin and set it out where it would be taken away to be disposed.
Honestly I don't understand what you think a functional government looks like, for sure it does not take away our social responsibilities so yes that will still be there for us.

It is just a mentality problem among citizens to think that a government has all the responsibility to make the country better. I'm also aware of what President Kennedy said, and of course every citizens of a country needs to understand that the changes they're seeking for starts with them because the President cannot solve all the problems of the country but if individuals begins to offer solutions to problems or innovate things that will help the country to grow, then that is what a united nation should be. There are individuals who have made their country proud by their innovations or by holding a prominent office in the world which shows that something good has been able to come out of that country so people with such mentality are great people.

The local community or group of people who have the mindset to take it upon themselves to fix certain things within their locality always wield that local power because fixing your own neighborhood is not just about helping the government it is more about taking full ownership and 100 percent control of your own community. When all community members come together to either secure their streets, fix potholes and clear their gutters themselves, then they stop being overdependent on the government to always come to their aid and it gives them a powerful voice over the politicians. When the community doesn't need much from the politicians, then they can't come around to make empty promises during election periods and get away with it.
