I'm not sure if this is the right section for this topic I'm going to do, please inform me so I can put it in the right section. Now, let's proceed, probably this topic could have a similar discussion but I want to discuss it again to give as a reminder to others who are planning to come here in the crypto space.

Mistake Investment in Cryptocurrency

  • Holding every single
They are thinking that every single coin will make you/us rich in 2026. There is a popular phrase in which is " If you don't hold you wouldn't be rich" That's why we are no longer in the era of 2021 where anything we invest during this period will really kick or pump the price of any crypto coins.

But now in 2026 to be strategist, because even some of the quality and big coins you know back in 2025 did not do so well. So it is not the time to start holding random coins and thinking that your going to make profit. By holding it long-term.

  • Investing in ICO's and IDO's
Just for the knowledge of others, these two are to allow you to invest in a token at the cheapest prices before the token gets listed on the market. Now this was the most persons made money from personally some did over 100x from what they did many of the coins they invested in ico's but back in 2025 most of the ico did not do well, in fact 99.9% of them did not do very well that's the truth and reality happened.

  • Staking tokens to get high APY or airdrops
I remember I saw something on twitter (Xplatform) where in the infospace you can see the picture below that its values just fell.

in which He staked a total of over 10 000$ but in the end all of the money that is left there is not even up to 500$ which if we look at it is the horror of what he experienced. So, basically stake these things just because you want to get airdrops, but I knew some of you know that most of the airdrops they got did not come the equivalent to the losses they are actually incurred. Thereby losing a lot of money just from staking. And there are some persons that are staking due to they want to get high APY like 100%, 1000%, 5000% and many more whenever you see things like that it is time for you to run from it. Due to high APY simple means most likely do its gonna be a scam at the end of the day. So simply run from it or avoid it.

  • Risk Management
Maybe some of us invest all of the money they have into a single token and if it is goes out, it simply means you've lost your money. It is important to start splitting your money on a specific coin you wanna invest in. That's way even if that one goes out you don't get to lose all your money.

So learn to do proper risk management and iits gonna help us for sure in the end.

Disclaimer:
all this is based on what I have studied and observed here and what I have learned regarding the past history that exists here in the crypto space.

I made every of this single mistake in altcoins and get hit badly.

There are still other mistakes
* Believing the strong tokenomics (such as buy-back-and-burn) will keep the crypto price up
* Believing that strong use cases (for the crypto) will keep the price up.

Neither of the above reasons are good enough to keep altcoin prices up.

  • Risk Management
Maybe some of us invest all of the money they have into a single token and if it is goes out, it simply means you've lost your money. It is important to start splitting your money on a specific coin you wanna invest in. That's way even if that one goes out you don't get to lose all your money.
Splitting is also referred to as diversification.
Splitting sometimes good sometimes not because you may not lose all money but can't get profit because after all the final result just even or still lose just not big.
For example, if you hold 5 coins but 3 of them result in a loss, the profit from profitable coins will be reduced by the losses from the others.

Most of the points you raised are very crucial but I want to add a few things to the one of ICO which gas dine more damage to people than anything. I remember iinvesting in several ICOs but I have not been lucky to make profits in any of them. This is why I strongly oppose investing in ICOs because they are only created to enrich the people that created them. Trading and short term investment are far better than investing in ICOs.

Holding every single coin
I know that people have advised diversifying your portfolio and investing but seriously, investing in “all” coins is one of the worst things I have seen on the internet. I understand that diversification works but too much diversification is like giving your money away to the market.

I am also completely against ICOs and IEOs. The only people who actually make a profit from them are the owners themselves.

Moreover, whether it is crypto investing or any other type of investment, we just have to keep one thing in mind that is if the ROI is high, the risk involved is also high. Hence there is a high chance that you might lose your money in these types of investments. Therefore it is advisable to take moderate risks and aim for moderate profits from the market.

I totally agree with all of this, it's from personal experience too.

Holding every single coin. Back in 2021 anything could pump, but not anymore these days. Many of the 2025 "blue chip" coins are still red. It is not a time to pick up just anything, you have to be more selective.
ICO/IDO. Used to be a goldmine, but the success rate keeps getting smaller. Without doing deep research, it's better to just skip it than end up holding a bag right after listing dumps.
Staking for big APY is a classic red flag that still gets a lot of people. The logic is simple: if the APY doesn't make sense, it's usually just crazy token emissions to pay the rewards, and the price crashes on its own.
Risk management. This is what novices tend to underestimate the most (I did, at that time). Don't put all your money in one coin, so you won't lose everything if your prediction turns out wrong.

Great reminder thread particularly for those new to the crypto space.

Is ICO still a thing in 2026? I thought it has re branded itself. But in any case that the structure is still the same, then it might not be a good advise to invest them except maybe you know the person behind that project.

Diversification, yes, it's crucial for every investor but it's tricky as well. As you don't know what altcoins to put your money with, although it might be good in the top 10-20, but there could be some good investment on some new coins but it's going to be very hard to find it and maybe you need to be lucky and a early bird investor.

I was in the era of ICOs, invested, made profits, and made losses. I saw it all, and if there was anyone who was still doing ICOs after 2019, then it was on them. I held bags of coins, thinking that they would moon, but they never did. They just kept going down and down until they had no value at all.

After the ICO lesson, I never made the same mistake with the so-called DeFi, yield farming, or whatever they call it and look at where we are today.

If you hodl the right assets such as Bitcoin, you see the value increase in long term. But if you hodl altcoins, you don't know which coin will increases so that will have risks so should accept.

ICO/IEO were the things that made people comes to crypto. But not many of them know Bitcoin and just leaving when the party is over without considering to invest in Bitcoin.

Remember to use only money you can afford, and pick coins with a good future. You can invest in altcoin but you should know the risk so you don't use too much money if you can't accept the risk.

This isn't only about staking but this is about having the wrong choice of altcoins of what we invest. They are good in paper during the launch and offers good APY but if there's less to no volume, it's worthless as its value and price will eventually drop. I'm done with this type of strategy, staking is good but that is going to depend on the choice of altcoins you have. You choose the usual ones maybe 5% to 15% and max of 20% but more than that, they're too good to be true and your money that's invested into those projects are likely to be gone after a year or even less than that.

Altcoins are very volatile assets which means that they are very risky businesses, the worst is that most of them are scams so if you're putting your money in altcoins you should know that you're risking your funds, you can make profit and exit before it dies or your funds will be buried with the project. You're more or less gambling your funds if you're holding any if the many shitcoins that are being listed in exchanges, if you're buying a memecoin for example you should make sure to use very small amounts for your own peace of mind. If you're not an experienced traders who understands how the market works to make profit over a short time it is better to hold Bitcoin on the long term and wait for it to become bullish because it has the capacity to reach ATH.

I will give one example that I hope most people here can relate to: do you know that there are people who are still actively investing their time in doing what is called mining Pi on their mobile phones, and there is this belief that they have that they are investing in cryptocurrency even without them owning any bitcoin whatsoever?

That is an example of a mistake in investment, focusing on holding a shitcoin or something with very little potential for success tomorrow.

There will definitely be people who would argue that people who are investing in Bitcoin are doing the same, focusing their energy on something that they are not certain has a potential of success tomorrow. But the truth is that investing in Bitcoin and holding it is far different from investing in a shit coin and holding it because there is already a strong reputation and community around Bitcoin, which most of these shit coins do not have because they mostly are surviving on hype.

When some crypto enthusiasts are being advised to invest in Bitcoin, they think it's not wise to do so because they assume that Bitcoin is quite expensive and can not make them to get rich quickly the way an altcoin will do but they don't realize that altcoins investment is like gambling, you are not even sure about the token that will actually pump during the bull run, you could invest in a dozen of token and non might produce a good result. The $10k that he used to buy those tokens, if he had bought Bitcoin with it during that 2022, he would have been happy about his decision as of last year when price got to $126k but instead he learned a lesson from it, so that other who thinks that investing on shitcoins is better that Bitcoin investment.

The first mistake I believe that should be paid more attention is to not have an exit plan. There are people who do decide the time to purchase, but never the time when they would come to the decision of selling. When they can't sell them, they lower their price expectations and dub it long-term holding. Long-term investing doesn't imply that you should purchase an asset even if its fundamentals are shifting. It makes sense to set a scenario that would make the original investment thesis wrong, and when you would exit the position for a profit and when you'd exit for a loss. Otherwise it is easy to fall into the trap of pining for a lack of a decision, which is simply a refusal to accept a bad decision.

In the early years, there were projects that made sense projects designed to solve actual problems. However, copies with minor modifications began to appear; the creators of these projects would invest heavily in marketing, driving people to pour money into them. Typically, the coin would launch at a very high price only to crash shortly after. Over the years, this cycle became the norm: what mattered most was no longer the project's utility, but rather who was behind it and how much was spent on marketing. People would buy in, intending to sell as soon as the price spiked, knowing the coin would eventually die and those who bought in late would lose money. In short, it turned into a form of gambling.

Look at what happened recently just a few days ago, Hunter Biden launched a token named "LAPTOP token"; there were even news reports about it. It was a token that launched at a price of $190, as can be seen on the CoinMarketCap chart And since he is a public figure, many people likely bought it early at high prices; when it was released, it sold out immediately. I believe that while it was widely available, no one was buying it, and as a result, look at the price it’s at now:

source: https://www.kucoin.com/trade/LAPTOP-USDT?rcode=rPH7VCS

The token is currently worth only $0.35; I honestly wonder what must be going through the minds of those who bought in at $5, for instance and what about the guy who bought at $190? What if he used his life savings to buy this token? And bear in mind, the person who created this token isn't just some anonymous major scammer; we’re talking about a well-known public figure doing this sort of thing. The cryptocurrency market has become a dangerous landscape when it comes to new projects.

From what I've seen in the past 12 years in the crypto-world the worst mistake people make is bag-holding altcoins. The reason is usually the same too, they saw bitcoin rise and rise and rise in the long run and they thought (or were told to by the advertisers) that some altcoin is going to do the same so they bought it up and their long wait began. An excruciating wait for a pump that never came and instead they watched their capital melt away.

Clearly, this is a common mistake that happen in the crypto world and it keeps on happening because unexperienced investors keep coming and they are not ready to research more for them not to choose the wrong token and invest in. Just because they witness the pumps of bitcoin and how it keep rising over and over again they thought every other token will do the same without making research and finding out some reliable altcoins to invest in.

Thus, holders that fall for scenarios like this don’t even want to accept that losses are part of crypto and losses are inevitable, they could have sell at loss when they are witnessing dips from the token they are investing in but they don’t want to sell at loss so they watch their money fading away gradually thinking the token will pull back. As an investor we should avoid social hypes because this will lead us into a dark room without a door.

There are more to this and everyone of them could be avoided with the right knowledge.

One problem about newbie investors is, investment-- no knowledge -- risk all-- loss. They don't seek knowledge from people who understands what to do. They are more pleased with knowledge from people who will promise them 100X returns.

I'm sure a good invest on shit coins in hopes to get double in a short term. But they omit one fact which is, nothing that comes too quick last long enough.

Well I like to bring up the fact that beginners shouldn't, on no account be in a rush to invest in any token without proper research and understanding before they can consider buying it or not. Because almost all of new tokens/projects often offer high rewards just to draw attention of new investors or investors who aren't cautious enough, into buying their assets for the sole purpose of allowing the early investors to sell and make quick profit out of them. That's why it's easy to say even if thousands of new coins are being launched every month without them having real value, anything they are offering especially high rewards, would definitely not stop the price from crashing.

That said in the crypto space it's pointless to rush into a new token even after doing your research. Best to say there isn't a competition in holding if an asset has real value like it claims it does, then whenever you decide to buy it wouldn't matter. So that's just how it is. Newbies should do their research not only from the claims of the project, but from different sources as well. That's all...

The person who is best in all that and knows better ways of doing research than the chances become reduced for the failure for that kind of person in the crypto space. The person who is best at doing research knows this better: holding all coins never achieves more profit because he knows that he should only invest in those coins or projects that are in demand and have a good future. And investing in shitcoins makes no value over time.

Also, those who are best at doing research know a better way of managing risk in their investment and if right now if i am at this point of following any risk management strategy, then I will choose a diversification strategy to divide my net portfolio into in-demand projects, and in all that I will invest the major part of my portfolio into the Bitcoin market. DYOR!
