Three new sotries on ChainQuery, each built around the actual blocks and transactions with the RPC calls shown so you can rerun them on your own node.

The Inflation Bug (2010). Block 74,638: a transaction minted 184.4 billion BTC through an integer overflow. Satoshi's fix shipped in five hours and the patched chain overtook the bad one.

https://chainquery.com/stories/value-overflow

The Halvings. All four halvings walked through their coinbase transactions, plus the arithmetic that lands the series on 21 million around 2140. Halving five is at height 1,050,000, roughly April 2028.

https://chainquery.com/stories/the-halvings

The Mt. Gox Collapse (2014). About 70% of global volume at the time; 850,000 BTC announced missing, 200,000 found in a forgotten wallet weeks later, payouts finally starting in 2024. The on-chain trail from the cold wallets to the trustee's escrow.

If you were around for any of these and we got a detail wrong, say so in the thread. We fix same day and credit the correction in the story.

Between two Bitcoin block subsidy halving, there are 210,000 Bitcoin blocks. With the Bitcoin average block time is 10 minutes, 210,000 blocks take about 4 years to be mined by Bitcoin miners.

There are many Bitcoin halving count down timers with different estimating times for a next halving.

I prefer our own (obviously I'm bias, but hey, it's the best one by far!)

Is it because of the UI? I'm kinda surprised you have no dark mode option. As a dark lover myself it would be nice if I can look at the numbers in a dark background. I can see my it looks nicer compared to others, especially because there's no analog clock that jumps around wildly whenever a new block is mined too fast (or too slow) compared to the average.

Really like how you show the RPC calls so we can rerun it on our own nodes instead of just taking your word for it. The halving one is my fav. I've a few things with that schedule in my art.. 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.125. Seeing it through the actual coinbase transactions is very cool. Any plans to do one on block 170?

It's great. There are many websites telling history of Bitcoin, but your idea stand out.

If you were around for any of these and we got a detail wrong, say so in the thread. We fix same day and credit the correction in the story.

How about mentioning some sources you used? For example, AFAIK earlier researcah about Patoshi pattern is from either https://bitslog.wordpress.com/2013/04/17/the-well-deserved-fortune-of-satoshi-nakamoto/ or https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=175996.0.

Mostly because it counts blocks instead of running a clock. The date is an estimate from the recent measured block interval and is labelled as one, so a fast or slow block doesn't move it. The same page has the completed halvings, the supply curve and the fee share of miner revenue. Fair point on dark mode, we don't have one. It's on the list.

Thanks. Block 170 is on the list now. It suits the format: one getblock call shows the first payment between two people, 10 BTC to Hal Finney with 40 BTC change, spending the block 9 coinbase on January 12, 2009. I'll post here when it's up. Is the halving art online anywhere?

How about mentioning some sources you used? For example, AFAIK earlier researcah about Patoshi pattern is from either https://bitslog.wordpress.com/2013/04/17/the-well-deserved-fortune-of-satoshi-nakamoto/ or https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=175996.0.

Good call, and overdue. Every story now ends with a Sources list. For Patoshi that is Lerner's thread here from April 13, 2013 (topic 175996), his bitslog posts of April 17 and 24, 2013, and the April 2019 post where the name Patoshi first appears.

Going back to those sources showed our Patoshi story had errors. We said the miner produced about 22% of early blocks. Lerner's figure is about 22,000 blocks, roughly 40% of the first 50,000. We also had the ExtraNonce fingerprint backwards, and misdated block 50,000 and the end of the pattern. All fixed, with a dated correction note at the bottom of the story that credits you.

We then ran the same check on the other five stories and fixed what we found. Each one lists its corrections at the bottom.

Do you still keep a list of previous versions? What if in the correction section shows before and after the correction so people can see the changes and verify it? I think it'll help with tracking changes and make everything feels more transparent.

As for the dark mode, good to hear that. More accessibility options are always good imo.

It is an interesting concept.

Here is an idea.  I remember a website from many years ago where you could scroll down 'to the bottom of the ocean' and if you scrolled up or down you would see which kind of fish living at that depth.  A scrollable Bitcoin Blockchain from Genesis to this moment where you could see 'check points' every time a notable event happened is what I thought this website will be.  It would be an interesting scroll.

Very interesting, and nicely put to actually see the events in the blockchain.
I have a suggestion of events to add:
  • The first transaction in the blockchain.
  • The first transaction with an economic value: ask Sirius about this one.
  • Errors in the mining process, or rather block constructions, that led to lost bitcoins.
