Choosing a company job is not a bad Idea because currently, depending on your geographical location, most companies pay better than government jobs and also most companies no longer appear so uncertain as it used to be what a company can wake up and discharge every worker. For me one of the only benefits of having a government job is the retirement benefit or pension, even though it's always a very small amount which cannot sustain life in some cases. Some private companies have also started making arrangements for retirement benefits which means that no matter where you are attached, government or private, you will still have a retirement benefit.
Retirement benefits are usually tagged to insurance companies, it's either the private company cuts some of your salary to save for your pension or you do it yourself, I had to take of the part you said that getting sacked by a government parastatal would stop an employee from getting their pension, it's false, they're life insurance companies that insure that a member access their funds in a case where the person is laid off, the money saved up in their annuity plan would still be sent monthly to their bank account when the time is due, pension payment, especially in my nation, is no longer under the control of the government, but the insurance companies.

Personally I don't think it's about the company being evil, but more about incentives. A company can value an employee but still decide that keeping that employee doesn't make economic sense.
I know about one thing in  terms of employment.
An organized company that follows the due process of recruiting employees during an interview would always employ certified individual that are fit for the job or position they are applying for.

On the interview processes, employees qualities will be considered and if qualified, the company may request to know how much or minimum amount of payout (salary) that the employee would be expected to be paid because, the company also have to consider their own bankrolls before making budgets of amount to pay the employee befort he/she can be hired.

Definitely companies will always retain potential employees who possess values to them when they are running bankrupt while less valuable employees contracts will be cut short for the company to keep sustainability.

Well, the problem lies on the standards our societies view as success today. That is, go to school, then get a job and depend on salary and wages for life. Mind you, I'm not against the idea of the former but the later. Because depending entirely on your wages makes you vulnerable if there is a potential layoffs in your company or retirement knocks at the door.

A smarter approach would be to treat employment as a foundation. Secure a job and divert some part of your earning to other form of businesses/investment as well as valuable skills. This way you will worry less if you eventually loss your job, atleast, you could brag about other means of survival.

Individuals in this current days should learn to have a mindset shift from relying on jobs to survive to relying on their skills and potentials and network of useful and possible investors in order to survive.

We need to prioritize fixed low cost living while trying to build investments that can be of great help when it begins to produce fruit like Investment in digital assets like Bitcoin, business equity, emergency portfolio, all come with great benefits when the job can no longer survive us. Improving our skills and knowledge base is also mandatory because AI seems to make things easier and we have to take advantage of it too as independent investors in our financial future.

If we can make ourselves very efficient, then the company will never want to lose us or underestimate us. All the people I have seen in the queue of layoffs so far are not so responsible and not efficient in the workplace compared to other people. If we can become efficient and work responsibly considering the company as our own, then the company will never decide to lay me off after seeing my work.

However, I personally like business and I tell every person that aim to build a business and now or in the future you can move forward according to your decision. If someone does not have the decision to do business, then having two sources of income will definitely be the best decision for that person.

Any company is forced to make decisions to protect its own interests first, they will first try to benefit themselves economically. Then they will try to prioritize the interests of the employees. If the company has to face losses, then it is natural that they will lay off employees. Because if they themselves face losses, then how will they pay the employees? Through this step, they can reduce the losses or try to profit themselves by reducing costs. Such incidents happen most often in private institutions.

Still, many institutions guarantee a stable source of income. For example, jobs in government institutions and jobs in autonomous institutions. Although autonomous institutions are owned by the government, they are not controlled by the government. There are even more private institutions that have a stable source of income.

You have to accept that at the end of the day, everyone wants to make a profit. No matter where you go, if the company does not improve or make a profit through you, you will be laid off. And for this reason I think that government jobs are more secure than private sector jobs. Because no matter how many AIs come here, the chances of you losing your job are very low. But I am not sure what will happen in the future. However I think that considering the current situation, no matter how skilled you are, you must rely on two income sources and if one goes, you can back up the other.

Volkswagen is also among the company that is laying off workers as the plan to lay off 50,000 workers to bring the total plan lay off to 100,000 by 20230. Anyone that is not worried by this trend is definitely living in denials because traditional jobs are changing due to technological innovation. This new reality should not only been seen from a negative light because it also come with a positive side which is a new opportunity for more people to get rich doing little and such opportunity available for a lot of people. Those who will key into the demand of latest technlogy will definitely benefit from this new technologies.

We are finish though if machines are going to take over the work of common man. I know how efficient it's for a machine to make work easy and faster but the dangers to society is to much. 50k people to become unemployed isn't a joke, the effect on the economy will be felt and not only that, competitors will see the same and will decide to to do the same thing, cut down number of workers which might save labour and cost.

As bad as what OP said is true, I'm afraid we can't do without jobs. The system is designed to work that way, that is how it has been but perhaps it will change in the future.

This is indeed a highly beneficial idea it will improve your financial standing and give you peace of mind regarding future challenges. However problems can arise if we fail to save any portion of our monthly income. Therefore to improve your situation you must eliminate unnecessary expenses and make it a priority to save money each month funds that can be invested in another business or a venture that generates continuous profit. It is true that a job is not permanent it can be lost due to company losses or even oneown errors. That is why it is crucial to pursue additional work to secure your lifestyle and future especially since in today world it is difficult to make ends meet with just a single source of income.

A lot can happen in the future for AI, but one must keep an eye on that issue so that one can manage the future properly. It is also important to create a habit of learning new things along with one's work. As compared to the present, many professions have changed in the past and this will continue in the future. As we see, technology is changing rapidly and the skills needed today may not be there in the future after a few years. Therefore, the types of work in the future will change a lot compared to the present. On the other hand, new types of work will be created in the future. A person who focuses on these issues and learns to work with technology to keep himself updated from the present and will have the ability to stand in front of him no matter what the situation is, will create different opportunities for himself. At the same time, it is better to strengthen his skills without worrying about whether the job will be secure.

For people who don't have capital and are starting out in life, and are in need of a good sum of money to get into business, having a job is a secure way to go to hit the goal of having money to fuel their future business or investment venture.

For other people job is a secure way for their retirement plan.  The effectiveness of the job had never deteriorated. Yes, there may be jobs that are short-lived, but after that, people are still looking for jobs to meet their needs or to fulfill their dreams.

So I disagree that "the Job" is no longer a secure go-to.

Companies will always focus on its own welfare, no matter how long an employee has served them. That won't matter to them because, we as employees are always replaceable to them.

It also depends on the CEO of it. I've heard that there were some of these CEOs that have replaced their employees with AI but, it turns out that was a wrong decision.

And so, they've recalled their fired employees back to work for them once again. I just don't know how many of them obliged.

Multiple companies are laying off their employees in bulk numbers since covid and then the AI hit them hard too. Some of the jobs became obsolete due to this AI development so keeping them make no sense. Also, any company that wants to increase revenue will keep on doing that as long as their employees are not needed for them anymore.

From the employee's perspective, they can't do much when it happens and they should prepare themselves for the next job which might be in entirely differentt sector if they are lucky.

Well in most cases, it's easy to say those who have reputation are the ones who are often spared from losing their jobs. Most folks are considered assets of the company so losing them would probably be worth more than up to five employees out all together so perhaps the best case scenario is to remove those ones who aren't doing their jobs well. It's not because the company leaders are trying to be cruel most times it's often caused by market conditions whereby the company is forced to cut costs when the revenue drops. Still there is a high possibility that every employee is doing their jobs well, but if the company is facing crisis then some folks would have to be removed just to save the company from failing, though it might reduce the speed of production and as well increase the chances of survival. That's all.....

For a long time now, getting into a good company brought about the feeling of finding a home. You work hard, stay loyal, climb the ladder, And then expect the company to reward such a loyalty with stability. Well, in today's reality, that is no longer the case.

Companies often have targets, shareholders obligations to fulfill, competition, and operating costs to all to navigate. If the numbers no longer make sense then drastic actions need to be undertake.

People are built differently, not everyone has the capability to manage a business or be entrepreneurs and for these persons and most persons in society, getting a well paid job in some firm or government body has always offered some securities and promises of stability.
While government agencies might not be affected by these developments, it’s not strange that we find these situations being the other of the time as, their are improvements on aspects to doing things in ways that cits down cost. Laying of workers comes easily, the company would always prioritize profit over the personal feelings of some staff.

Personally I don't think it's about the company being evil, but more about incentives. A company can value an employee but still decide that keeping that employee doesn't make economic sense.
Companies do operate as a separate entity and would always put activities that would maximize profit for them over what each individual staff do think. There isn’t anything evil about that, it’s simply business.

This is true, there's nothing wrong with that and the "job security" is no longer a secured thing and we even realized this when the pandemic has came. And so any layoff that happens right now can happen not only to the tech companies but also for the other companies that we may know of. So the solution for this is to have more skills but it's up to you if you like to be a jack of all trades or focusing onto one skill that's highly in demand and only a few have that skill. What others are forgetting are the soft skills and they're focusing more into technical ones.

Jobs are never forever and at some point you will definitely have to take your leave and retire. I think trying to find a job that lasts forever should not be the aim but finding a sustainable job that can give independence and help build a better future after retirement. Some people try to wait till after retirement before investing and that's the mistake they make. The earlier you start working towards your future the better for you and the less the pressure of relying on your salary. It is even more important for those working in private sector because of the uncertainty in the security of their job and are always at risk of losing their job anytime unexpectedly so building something outside their salary can really make a difference.

I think the most secured jobs are government jobs, although most people believe they don't pay well, compared to the private sector.  I think of most important thing to consider when looking for a job is the security,  which government job gives you. Like someone mentioned in one of the post I read, every job has its advantage and disadvantage, and for government job its the job security,  which you really don't get in the private sector and the private sector provides you more money, but not job security.

Well, do you think those who have been laid off will unemployed now? I don't think so because they are all employees of big giant companies. I mean, it is a person's dream to go here or work there. You have to work hard to get there. So here I will say that those who have been laid off will definitely be able to find their own income source somehow. Because they are all more skilled than us general public. However here is a big advantage of government jobs. Even if the performance is good in a private company, the job can be lost due to business decision or restructuring. At least in government jobs, the risk of such corporate layoffs is much less. So at the beginning of a career, one should not only look at salary but also calculate both stability and one's own skills.
