Yesterday, I get this update about the Bitget hack and the restrictions for withdrawal, and I get small 11$ inside, so today I try to withdraw am but I receive this message

I also try to use different networks, but I get the same message. Well, na small $11; I just dey feel for those wey get millions and some huge amount of money for inside the exchange.

People wey no keep assets for the Bitget exchange no get nothing to worry about because their money no loss, as them understand the saying say not your key, not your coin. The reason why that small $11 dey there sef na because of one easy survey I do for person few days ago.
Me I be one of those people wey dey use Bitcoin exchange coins most of the time, but I never for once keep huge assets for the exchange any day because I also understand say I no get any control over am, and at any moment my asset for loss.
The only thing I dey use Bitcoin do na to exchange coin through P2P trade (either buying or selling nothing else). I just hope say everything later dey alright with the platform.

This is getting more serious by the day to be honest, because I just can't understand why the numerous cases of scam as of recent. Today is this one tomorrow is another. However, those that love keeping their assets on an exchange, I just hope they are seeing what is happening as of recent because they are mostly the target. I will suggest that instead of risking it for nothing, it's better we save our asset on a self custodian wallet, I beleive it's more saved than leaving it completely on an exchange.

It's quite unfortunate that withdrawal have not resumed yet on bitget, and for that reason we can predict the extent of the damage done by this hackers and only can trust that everything returns back to normal with the exchange.

My expectation was that by now everything would be ok with the exchange, but now that withdrawals have not resumed on the exchange, this speaks volumes about what we are expecting.

Nigerians dey use Bybit pass Bitget, no supposed dey compare.

About $300 million but less than $400 million was stolen, and the exchange already has $400+ million available to cover up for the loss while they track the history of the stolen funds with the help of agencies. I'm not sure if those funds will be recovered, as long customer balances are intact and withdrawals will be open soon, it eases the pressure on customers who have their funds held.

I want to know, are P2P also disabled? Can someone deposit and sell their coin for fiat?

Last last na self custody wallets win o, all these exchanges no dey trusted at all. I pity people wey still dey doubt the vulnerability of centralized exchanges because all these exchanges wey dem dey sweep now na major major exchanges wey be say many Nigerians dey make use of. Self-custodial wallet is the best place to store Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, the hack that happened to Bitget yesterday is a wake up call to those who still store Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on centralized exchanges to prioritise self-custodial wallet over centralized exchanges. Binance was once hacked in the past, i will not be surprised if it is hack for the second time since two centralized exchanges which Nigerians mostly use have been hit by hackers.

Bank and centralized exchange is the same thing if you lose your money in any of them you will not get your money back. Instead of me to keep money on centralized exchange or in bank i rather keep the money in my house where i have full custody of the money.

Self custodial wallet is the best place to store bitcoins and cryptocurrencies as nowadays we see exchanges and a hardware wallet get hacked. In fact many of our local board members use Bitget and they use Bitget for P2P and trading even store their Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency assets there, likewise I had some Bitcoin in this exchange but it can't be withdrawn using Bitcoin, Lightning Network and Binance Smart Chain Network at the moment.

However this contented exchange suspects that North Korean hacking group is responsible for the cryptocurrency hack of their nearly $352 million worth of money, and another thing to note is that Bitget has already mentioned that they will announce a withdrawal plan on September 26th, maybe from then on these Bitget exchange users will be able to take full control of their assets.

At the end of the day, some of these centralized exchanges are not better than banks. May be the banks might be better than their so called services. I don't think I remember the last time people get away with robbery offline but the online banking with crypto exchange is terrible. There is nothing safe with this exchanges, sadly many Nigerians have accounts with this exchange and they will have money there stuck.

Since they announced their insurance that covers the money, I pray they resume withdrawals as soon as possible, don't withdraw the funds to another exchange, keep it on your funds in your personal wallet.

I don't know between centralized exchanges and banks which one is better because they perform almost the same services and are vulnerable. Don't paint centralized exchange black just for the sake of making banks look better than centralized exchanges because every blessed day people are losing money in their bank accounts and banks can't trace how the money moved. I saw a news on Facebook of how a woman who stayed abroad but was saving money for years in her Access bank account lost all the money and Access bank can't give her proper account of how his money vanished in her account, the woman was calling on Verydarkblackman to help her recover her lost money from Access bank. Nowhere is safe than putting your money or assets in your custody. If there's any Nigerian who lost his or her funds on Bitget due to the hack, the person his responsible for his or her loss because people in this forum are against keeping assets on centralized exchanges.

All these things wey dey play out for this crypto industry in this year alone show say these scammers don  dey up their games. So if we no wan fall victim for any of them, we need to be very careful on our personal details, especially our emails.

As much as emails are very important to protect against these scammers and hacking activities that are  going around now, as a means of protecting our crypto activities, our phone numbers are other things that carry serious set of data about our internet connectivity. As it stands now, the more you look, the more you see.

If it is possible, making use of a particular line for some sets of our crypto/online activities to separate our normal life from our crypto. It's just getting darker on daily basis how the internet is playing out itself along side these scammers and hackers.

I read somewhere that they’ve found an IP clue linked to the North Korean hackers and they’re the group suspected of this theft. These are the same group that hacked Bybit last year and stole almost $1.5B and now they’re the main suspect for this theft also, meaning this money can probably never be recovered whatsoever.

Next time ease the stress by dropping a source url/link so we can debunk it if it’s actually a false claim .. but there’s  possibility they are truly behind it since they were also behind Bybit hack itself anyway. Just ip doesn’t cut it btw..
“never” is too absolute , the chance is just slim.

Just hope their protection fund can cover this lost and they actually pay all their customers, the SAFU funds is well above the stolen funds currently as per reports.

I read about that in a thread for the discussion about the theft on the Exchange board then I saw another article by TradingView about it, the Bitget CEO said it herself on the livestream earlier so it’s probably not a false claim. You should read the article below for more insights.

Let’s not delve more on KYC because some people are even okay with doing KYC as long as they can get to attain the services they want from these platforms. Exchanges as the name implies is for exchange of tokens, or even to trade on. Asides that, any other thing you’re doing there and thinking of it as a means of saving is already you causing harm to your funds.

You cannot keep all your money in self custody wallets, that's just the truth because you will need money to use as everyday payment which of course crypto assets are not used for everyday transactions in Nigeria. However, even if you keep all your money in crypto asset it will still require you to convert to fiat currency whenever you needed money in your currency. This no be good news in any way at all, cause e de reduce the rate of NGN exchange and top CEX exchanges way no put NGN into the system, the small one way try do am for us, na come be the ones way de face these kind exploits/threats.

We are getting into the stage where both custodial wallets with hardware is not longer safe not to mention CEX or DEXs this means that we are only yet to get a breaking into a cold storage wallet that is completely air-gapped and have to online activity record, once this one is broken we are completely cooked.

But however let’s just not make the mistake to trust exchanges by keeping anything that we can’t afford to loss in those exchanges.
