A lot of people hear and say things like “Bitcoin is anonymous”.  There is this widespread assumption that Bitcoin wallet addresses can't be traced back to a real person. But is this actually true?
Let's look at it this way, Bitcoin addresses don't contain your name, phone number, home address or social security number. However, a vast majority of Bitcoin transactions involving an address are recorded on a public blockchain.
Let's not forget the part of the off-chain network. In this regard, it is important to note that exchanges usually ask for KYC registration. So yes, someone definitely knows who you are.
Like we may all know, Bitcoin is said to be pseudonymous rather than anonymous. Your name might not appear on the block chain but things can be traced back to you.
This topic is a lot deeper than meets the eyes. Let's hear your thoughts on it

Bitcoin transactions on the blockchain are pseudonymous rather than anonymous, but that does not mean that bitcoin reveals the personal identity of users on the blockchain. A public transaction on the blockchain shows:
1. Receiver address
2. Sender address
3. Amount
4. Transaction time
5. Transaction history of the addresses.

A few number of ways where an address could be linked to a person outside the blockchain
1. Publicly admitting that a posted address belongs to you.
2. Giving out an address to someone who already knows your identity.
3. Blockchain analysis/ cases of data leak.

In my own opinion, Bitcoin wallet addresses are trackable because every Bitcoin transaction is publicly and permanently recorded on the blockchain. Bitcoin addresses involved in transactions are visible and can be viewed by anyone. But the only thing that is not revealed is the identity behind Bitcoin address.

A decentralized wallet address is pseudonymous, not anonymous. Every transaction made through the address can be tracked very easily, if your identity is revealed with the address then it is no longer pseudonymous.

However, you can easily keep yourself free from the tracking system, use a different address for each transaction, then no one can track you.

If you use a centralized exchange address then it is very easy to associate your name with the transactions, because with KYC you are not pseudonymous, but your identity is revealed with that address.

A lot of people hear and say things like “Bitcoin is anonymous”.  There is this widespread assumption that Bitcoin wallet addresses can't be traced back to a real person. But is this actually true?

The first question we should also ask ourselves about cryptocurrency assets is which wallet we are using: a custodial or non-custodial wallet. This will ultimately determine whether we can be traced from our wallet address to our personal identity.

Second, the transaction must be well defined: is it on-chain or off-chain? Privacy is not something we can joke with, and that is why we must know all about this before we go into performing any form of transaction with Bitcoin or any other assets in cryptocurrency

No be only newbies deh make this mistake oh, some member weh done pass newbie rank deh make this mistake join.

If na by anonymity the addresses for bitcoin Blockchain weh show the transactions for no deh traceable and public, na deh why them call Bitcoin addresses pseudonymous and,

Na only when the person use CEX address do transactions na there eim identity fit deh exposed later, cause CEX get all their customers details through kyc and any leak na identity exposure wahala be that.

If your address has been exposed, then people can figure out it's you. It's common knowledge. Everybody knows that if there is something that links an address to you, then it can be traced back to you. If you use an address from an exchange that requires KYC, people who don't have access to the exchange won't know it's yours when they see it on the blockchain. Exposing your address doesn't mean you're compromised, but it can mean people can monitor the address and keep tabs on you. That is why it is advisable to change your address and have more than one. Some people even advise that you shouldn't reuse an address, but that is not possible in my opinion.

The other way people can trace you is by tracing your IP address on a public node when you make a transaction. But even this won't lead them to you directly.  I know that with your IP they can trace you, but this is for people who have resources and means.

Bitcoin wallets you created on your own cannot be traced to you as long as it is a non-custodial wallet. If it is an exchange wallet, it can be traced back to you because exchanges demand KYC mostly before you can access the exchange wallet; therefore, despite the fact that blockchain is public and all transactions are visible, using non-custodial wallet is safe, but with exchange wallets, they can be traced to you directly.
Privacy is important, let’s avoid the use of exchanges if we can, because transactions can be traced to you through your KYC.

There's a difference between Bitcoin being traceable and it being trackable. While Bitcoin being traceable means to look at where the coins originated from, Bitcoin being trackable is knowing where the coins go live.

This being said shows that as on a public ledger isn't some sort of secret network that can't be linked to the owner because so many tools exist these days to track and trace coins and transactions back to the owner and that's how most scammers and hackers are caught.
Still, it depends on individual privacy practice to evade or be as exposed as a tail light when transacting with Bitcoin on the network.

I put it to you that there are people who have been using Bitcoin for a long time and still think Bitcoin is anonymous.  Still it depends on what your definition of newbie is. Person fit don dey use Bitcoin for long even invest in it and get some for exchange but go think say them nor fit trace him transaction. Them fit get the idea say exchange dey risky because of KYC but them nor go still reason say even decentralized wallets and exchange too dey traceable.  And many of them sef nor know about mixers. The thing be say you only fit talk about yourself because you get the necessary knowledge many people still nor know. Them still think say them dey covered and nobody go fit trace transaction back to them

Traceable because you allowed it so, someone who do not want to leave any trace to his identity wouldn’t interact with centralized exchanges, there are also DEX for P2P, only that majority don’t value the full concept behind a completely decentralized system.

There is no identity behind an address, coins can be traced from the sender to receiver and could also be identified to which exchange the coin was sent to, the difficulty in retrieving personal informations behind the address is that it is nearly impossible to do, only in few exceptions, an insider from the exchange, or customers details were hacked, centralized exchanges are not permitted to relay customers identity for the public.

Bitcoin address can only be said to be traceable to an individual only when you use a centralized exchange for all your transactions, because inasmuch as you keep using a decentralized exchange where your KYC details is not submitted anywhere with the transaction, it will definitely not be easy for anybody to know who owns a particular Bitcoin address or trace it to your true identity. So Bitcoin can true be said to be anonymous, most especially when you earn it online without showing your face or personal details.

Someone has answered you very well. But I just want to throw more light to that. Bitcoin address is visible. Everyone can see it. You can trace transactions as the Blockchain is accessible to everyone. What can't be done is trace the address to the owner. That's partially impossible. The question is how or why? Now it all depends on the information about the person that is online or data leak also. That's just the important cases of them linking an address to it's original owner.

I still try to prioritize my privacy and to my power make me anonymous during transactions to some extent even if it's not totally but I try.
For those who still prioritize their privacy should Avoid unnecessary chain transactions and reuse of one particular address, that will make linking of ID and address more difficult.

Na only newbies dey think say bitcoin is anonymous. Any person way don tay for the bitcoin space know say bitcoin dey pseudonymous and them fit trace am down to exchange address. Na why government authorities fit dey track down criminals way dey scam with crypto.

Until bitcoin is spent as a currency and the two parties are ready to send and accept payment through their personal wallets, bitcoin can then be untraceable. As long as one of the parties is using an exchange wallet, funds can be traced to that address and the person behind the account will no longer be anonymous. The government can easily track you by that because they have the authority to ask for your details through the exchange wallet you’ve submitted your KYC too.

Well this all depends on how you used the address because you can decide to stay anonymous and you achieved that without any obstacle. All you need to do is avoid linking your identity to your wallet address and we have DEX that can help you achieve that purposes. CEX aren't all that unorganized as most people will think, we do have DEX that don't need kyc to allow you trade and exchanging all transactions that you want while being anonymous. Sure Bitcoin addresses can be traces to you but if you know how to play the game, you can stay anonymous without anyone being able to track a transaction to you. We got mixers that can make trucking your address more difficult or Impossible and all this contributes to making Bitcoin more decentralized. Sure our address can be traced but you can still make yours untraceable and stay hidden as much as you want.

I'm quite surprised to see that some users don't even know what it means when they say bitcoin is pseudoanonymous. It simply means transactions are tied to your wallet addresses instead of your real name. We are using bitcoin the wrong way and that is why we can be easily traced.

Centralised exchanges were not inclusive in the ideal world Satoshi envisioned with bitcoin but some whales saw the creation of bitcoin as a business opportunity, thus, they developed exchanges that require you to do the exact opposite of what bitcoin was meant for (KYC shit and custodial services). Let's assume every users do not make use of exchanges and use only wallet such as electrum. Tell me how exactly your identity can be revealed and connected to your bitcoin address?  Yes, blockchain analysts might be able to connect some addresses to one owner, but they can't figure out the name of the owner because they don't have access to information from your real world identity.
