Suspicious PM from a newbie

I got this PM from a newbie, ElectrumwalletTeamAssist, and it causes me to suspect he's trying to pose as a representative of the official Electrum team.  He's not.  The subject shares similarity with the title of a thread pinned in the Electrum board, and the username itself is an obvious attempt to mislead those who may not know any better.  The official representatives of Electrum on the forum are ThomasV and ghost43.

We have seen numerous attempts like this in the past years, especially when we are in a disoriented state like this.  Every petty thief wants to take advantage of the recent hacks and we all need to be careful. You wouldn't fall for something like this, neither would I but I get it, that's exactly the point of making this post and leaving a tag on that moron.

Hundreds, millions of people's money have been stolen allegedly and the exchange/ casino involved have only given a feedback that assures the protection of the leftover. Years of hard work has been lost. The scars are still fresh and then another shows up with this. I wonder how many people they have reached out to already.

It’s an old scam method on Discord, Telegram, and Reddit. I guess they are now trying it here, but I doubt they will have much success because people are generally more experienced here. This kind of phishing attempt is most likely to succeed only against a complete newcomer to cryptocurrency. This forum also shows user activity, which for these accounts is much lower than you would expect from a customer support representative. If that’s not enough, there’s a giant red warning message.

I wonder why they are targeting old and experienced members. Newbies, jr members and member ranks should be their target because it's simply impossible for a legendary member to fall for this.

How about sparing a few minutes to reply them, and say that you are having an issue to see their next steps. Possibly they'll send you a link to download the real version of Electrum lol.

He isn’t just impersonating Eletectrum, but also he is a scammer. He hasn't posted anything on the forum yet, but he is sending PMs to the forum users. So it’s pretty clear his intention is to scam and hack the Electrum wallet. Otherwise it doesn’t make sense to create such a username and then PM forum users.

I have tagged him from my end as an impersonator. Other forum users are should also aware of this scammer and shouldn’t fall into the trap. He will act as an official representative, and then he might want to help you. At the end of the day he will try to get access to the wallet.

They target members who post or ask questions about a specific issue. I don't think they care about account rank. It's probably just a bot. Like FinneysTrueVision mentioned, this is a pretty well-known scam method on Discord and Reddit.

Probably. Or they will point you to some phishing site, or they will try to get your seed phrase or private key in some other way to "fix" the issue.

Exactly. It's a low-effort method that very likely won't yield any results, but on the other hand, it costs them nothing.

This kind of PM is why i've disabled accepting PM from newbies. Most of them are spam or scam attempt, that i don't even even feel like to report.

My bet is they already have proxy or VPN with IP address that isn't included on evil list yet.

My guess is most of them are proxybanned. We can't know for sure until they post or PM someone.

This is honestly the type of PMs i would expect from newbie accounts, anyone who wants to scam people on here would use new accounts instead of risking high ranking account, it's very obvious that this person is a scammer.

Unlike someone on the forum saying people should be careful with old accounts sending PM, I've never received such from old accounts on this forum, but new accounts? Sure, something similar to what OP posted.

I don't even bother creating anything about it like OP did here, I ignored because I know it's scam out right and they will PM others who will eventually report them.

It is good to create a topic like this after reporting the PM to the admin. Because these scammers could send this PM to other users who aren't so vigilant, and may have started a topic about a certain subject, were they need some kind of help or solution.

It could be a quick way for the scammer to deceive the unsuspecting victim. So better to create some kind of awareness about this.
