Many of the economy in the world today are tough, and in this kind of situation working hard to maintain the same lifestyle you have have when the economy was okay seems to be meaningless, I feel one should be flexible, and try to adjust to the changing economy more especially as you are still struggling to meet up with some of your responsibilities. In fact, there was a time when we lived a respectable life mentally and socially with comparatively less effort than we do today, but now both income and effort have increased, but due to the decrease in purchasing power, we are not able to enjoy its benefits. To be honest with you alot of youths are in the situation especially in my country where the economy isnt stable enough for you to even adjust to two jobs for survival, like alot of people are just maintaining their lives, basically anything to survive. People lack the concept of inflation, they just assume that they are better when they get 5 or 10% increase in their salary while their nation is having a 20% inflation rate.

Let's have a look at this from another perspective that,  One mistake most people usually make is that, the moment their earnings starts increasing, they maybe intentionally or unintentionally start increasing their expenses.
For example, for someone who was earning $500 monthly, and then suddenly his earnings increased to $1k, he then feels because he can afford a generator immediately, he then without any thought went and bought a generator and because there is now a sound and working generator, there is always these tendency of buying fuel to on the generator when there is no light which automatically means you're burning fuel which is money, people just start adding unnecessary expenses to themselves which is one of the reasons I believe makes feel same even after an increment.
