That why it very risky to store your seed phrase only Inside your device. In a situation were by the device get misplace or faulty/inaccessible you see that you loss access to both backup abd wallet at the same time. Recovery will be much more easier if seed phrase is being kept offline, im a secure place because you could just recover your wallet in another device.
When people use Bitcoin, have Bitcoin wallets, have bitcoins to store, they must not only choose a wallet, create one to use but also have to make wallet backups (not only one backup but some backups), test backups for a test recovery, and fund wallets only wallet recovery test is well.

It's super important principle because funding a wallet without backup, without backup test is very risky. Your devices (like a phone) can be lost, can be broken and be dead technically and if you don't have wallet backups, you will lose that wallet and bitcoin in it.

Making wallet backup is a step many people do, but a next step - testing wallet backup for recovery - is usually ignored by many Bitcoin users. Practically this step is very important because if you test your backup, you will be able to detect any mistake and inaccuracy of your wallet backup. If things are inaccurate, you can throw away that empty wallet, create a new one, create backup, test it before using a wallet with actual bitcoin fund.

The primary issue is not your friend's lack of knowledge about the phone password but his inability to backup the wallet seed/private keys.
Here is my question, suggestion, and warning:
1. He must be sure that he is not letting random wallet recovery services handle the phone. Most of them are scammers, as there is no information provided by you about the person working on the phone.
2. Does the phone still function properly, and has it never been factory reset?
3. Does he remember the wallet app he used for the Bitcoin, such as Mycelium, Blockchain.info, Electrum mobile, etc.?
If he can't come up with the right answer to this question, there is no magic that can recover the Bitcoin without the seed or a way to unlock the old phone (that's if it hasn't been factory reset yet).

The password of the mobile device doesn't have any to do with his Bitcoin, let him use another device get then wallet he used in saving him Bitcoin on the new device get a wallet by imputing the seed phrase of his wallet in the new device.

I don’t think there is any seed phrase stored anywhere, I would have asked how early the bitcoiner bought those bitcoin because in the earliest days of bitcoin like before 2011 there wasn’t any thing like mnemonic phrase then just private key and also the wallet.dat file which was used to recover the wallet back then. Mobile phones though do not have that option of wallet.dat file so I wouldn’t ask of that.

The question should maybe the OP friend actually saved the private key and from the post I strongly doubt that. The recovery from a dead Phone will be seriously hard because it would be able to recover files only and mobile wallet do not have that, so I don’t think OP has any chance of getting any thing from that Kind of recovery.
The possibility of forgetting your phone password is wrong, so if we are checking all possibilities which is what we are doing then we also need to ask the OP if it's actually his friend or are there other boxes we are trying to check.
We would not like to assist someone on something not fully understood.

I believe before someone should be holding such there are possibilities that they had their seed phrase backup somewhere or written down where they can recover it at any given time.
Although, this could be little bit tough because you didn't mention the device he made the investment through from, because back then when you created an address there is always a seed phrase to safeguard, so that when you are inputting it to another wallet it would be that easier for you.

If I'm not mistaken whatever is wrong with the phone
Would require them to clear or flash the phone
Before it would be useable
And these would lead to the datas in the phone getting lost.
Imo I don't think anything can be done if the phone data has to be cleared
And depends on how he saved his seedphrase.

Quote
Why don't we have an application where we can recover our data of BTC
And the app can have access and steal your funds
That's not how bitcoin is supposed to work.

How about the seed phrase? He did not backup the seed phrase somewhere like on paper?

One thing about phone password is that to brute force it is hard. After like 5 attempts, it may keep doubling the times needed to try another password.

He should backup the seed phrase on paper or on metal sheet like stainless steel or titanium next time.
He have his everything saved in that phone but the issue is that the device have some circuitry problem and the shopkeeper told him that we can't recover the phone while saving the data .
Although time has passed and he also doesn't know the password of that phone. He have saved every single detail in the notes on that phone.
Worse mistake anyone can make. This is not a Bitcoin issue, Bitcoin has already made provision for users to recover  their bitcoins  and that is if they still have their seedphrase. We would have been talking about how to recover his bitcoins if your friend backed up his seedphrase properly. But since he has everything in his phone which is now faulty, he should focus on looking at the possibility of having the data in his device recovered (that will be difficult to recover though).

If finally he is unable to recover his bitcoins, this incident should teach him a lesson to backup his seedphrase properly. Storing his seedphrase in his mobile phone is not even adviceable.

Not Your Keys, Not Your Bitcoin

Mobile phones though do not have that option of wallet.dat file so I wouldn’t ask of that.

He said his friend invested in Bitcoin in 2016 and Bip39 seed phrase was already adopted by then. Let's assume he used a private key instead of seed phrase backup, why remember the phone now? If there is no any reason, then this is negligence of investment.

Another thing I don't understand about OP is the replies are not adding up. First he said the phone password, he later said the phone circuit. If the phone is could turn on, what's the business with circuit, that's the part I don't understand in this conversation or perhaps, this is English barrier.

Your friend needs to explain the details as best he can for example, what kind of investment app it was. I’ve encountered relatives in the past who referred to any app related to Bitcoin or investments (including login credentials), simply as "BTC data."

This is also possible. Some people did used centralized services then to keep Bitcoin, they didn't use private keys or seed phrase. If his friend used the same custody, there is nothing to recover here.

I have a friend of mine who used to invest in BTC in 2016. He was using very low end device on that time , and succeeded to make money through the investment. But now he still invest in markets but he forgot the password of that mobile he used to use in 2016. He tried to recover it but everyone around him told him that we can recover the mobile but not the data.
If anyone know anything that could help him, don't forget to share it with us.
He still have that mobile with him but he isn't able to open it.
If it is a very old device they should be able to recover the data without a hard reset. Depending on the technician there are ways to mod the passcode trial limit and brute force the password but I think it's only gonna be practical if it's a pin or passcodeif it's an alphanumeric password I don't think it's possible because of the permutations.

That being said the most important information he needs is the seed phrase. The bitcoins are not tied to a particular device you just use the device to gain access via the seed phrase.

Why the title though ?  I mean your friend clearly can't have access to his BTC because he didn’t backup his seed phrase or backed up his seed through only a medium that can only be accessed by having access to the phone it self (based on assumption since you didn’t  give clear explanation on what is exactly  going on with your friends wallet & the relationship it has with the mobile device).

What application are you asking for again? The one that can help you save(backup) your seed  in just one click?  Even with that , you still need to backup another data either encrypted or not .

As far as I know, there is no way to recover data stored on a locked smartphone.

The only way is to try various password combinations, or try to remember the passwords your friend have used. It should be the best not to try a factory reset, because it will erase all data on the smartphone. Just wait; until he remember the password.

Well, your friend will need patience, because after every few attempts, he will be given a break to try different passwords. Also, keep your phone healthy so it doesn't get damaged, so he can hopefully recover it after remembering everything.

You need to give more information about the details here like what kind of Bitcoin wallet his using, what phone is he using, is it an android or and apple device something like that so we could have a better understanding on it.

Pretty sure some technician could unlock your device without wiping that data you just need to find that person, good thing he still the mobile but this was still a very low chance but since it is an older phone it surely has weak security compared to the new models this days that is basically almost impossible and not worth the time.

But if it was a Bitcoin wallet and it has seed phrase you could open it on other devices, you don't need to recover the old phone, or is he talking like the seed phrase is saved on the phone itself something like that?

[...]

Base on my experience if I tried to fix my phone to technicians is they keep reformat the device so to check if the device does not have a corrupted issues after configured and make a replacement of a parts of the phone. Now the only way to recover the funds to your phone is having the seed phrase and taking down the notes of this seed is one of the very first instruction of the wallet as part once you wanted to access your funds and to make a recovery. If ever none of these I guess feel sorry it will be considered as loss.

Oh, my God. Are you making up information about a friend again? A few days ago, you came up with the story of your awakening after a five-year absence, correcting it several times. Is there a new story now?

Why are you writing without specifics again?  What specific phone model are you referring to?What data is stored in it?  A Bitcoin address and a seed phrase are not something that should be stored directly in a phone. And what happened to your friend is that he trusted you to find a way out of the situation. Doesn't he understand about all the little things, since he is still an investor?. You're making this up again..

I know about your strategy. It is currently being posted in the opening of new topics and answers where there is a possibility of receiving merits. How many of your accounts have been banned? How long until this account meets the same fate as your previous ones?

As a newbie on myownself I also prepared a strategy for myself , I took advices from my cousin because he is very experienced in these kind of stuffs.

And then I started seeking the discussions and created my own strategy and set a goal for myself and now I am focusing on these discussions and will share my own point of view with you people.

As the 1BTC = 83k$ , So I will be pulling up 83 pushups from today. And don't forget to motivate me Wink

If he can't recall the password, then I don't know how he can recover everything. That's why it's very important to write it down, seed phrase, password or even our private key as once we lost it, there is no recovering from that.

Anyhow, I hope that this is not just a made up story, otherwise, we don't know what is the reason for creating it here when everyone is sincere to help and give you advise on your friend's situation.

Maybe it is true. I said this because phones as of that time are not using fingerprint like that. Another thing is that bitcoin at the time has lower price but the price has gone up now which can let him remember that he has bitcoin somewhere.

One is the phone password, another is the wallet password. If he can not remember his phone password, the probability to remember the wallet password is low.

I do not know the reason some people do not like to backup their wallet file or seed phrase but I think he thought the money is not much at the time.

He have his everything saved in that phone but the issue is that the device have some circuitry problem and the shopkeeper told him that we can't recover the phone while saving the data .
Although time has passed and he also doesn't know the password of that phone. He have saved every single detail in the notes on that phone.

I once saw a video about an eMMc memory board that can be transplanted to another similar device. I thought this method could be used to recover data from that phone, but this method is usually done by professionals and the success rate also depends. So if you know a technician you can trust who’s an expert in this, then you could try using this method. But also make sure whether the value of that Bitcoin is worth the effort, because if it’s not that much, then you can just forget about it.

This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYJZkgchfqw

Damn... Was it an airgap device or hardware wallet that is in the question? From the look of things though (mobile) you mean is the internet devices that is not connected online which stores its private keys offline.
If that is so, that of your friend made a really terrible mistake which I see many people does that out of ignorance to make sure they have their private keys backup.
For someone using the airgap device to store their Bitcoins should be undernoted that they accessibility of their crypto wallets basically have to go through the mobile device.

And from the look of things, your friend dumped the device and after a long time he had to send funds in the wallet address stored in the mobile without having to exercise his accessibility with the device.
And the danger of this here is that if you can not longer access the device and you format it, definitely you are going to loose all your datas.

If his seed phrase is written in the notepad of the phone and if he factory resets the phone and starts it again, then everything is deleted and it is almost impossible to recover it. However, if his notepad is synced with Google account/Cloud, then in that case, the data can be recovered by logging in with his old email or that cloud account. Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO/, Vivo etc. have their own cloud sync, if that account was created earlier, then he can log in again and try. If recovery is possible from these, then he can find the Seed phrase of his wallet, otherwise I don't think it is possible to recover it. I don't know of any other way than this.

If your friend is investing regularly, why didn't he physically write down the seed phrase of his wallet for the safety of his wallet? There is no guarantee that an electronic device can cause an accident at any time, so it is very important to write down the private key or seed phrase on a paper note for the security of the wallet.

[...] He tried to recover it but everyone around him told him that we can recover the mobile but not the data.

What is needed for recovery from my own knowledge is the internal wallet files.
If there's any possibility of cloud or external backups being used as at then, it should be checked first.
If it was one of those old models of phones that used MicroSD card, it can be inserted on a PC to ascertain if the wallet or key files are still intact.

There's also the part where technicians who knows their onions can use USB debugging, to extract the data without a password.
This is just about as much as I know and I hope it could be of immerse help if this is truly the case.

Since the phone have some circuit problems, it means the board of the phone will likely be affected, and if the bord has spoiled, there is a high tendency that the data will be lost and if the data is lost, all saved data including seed phrase you claimed was in the device will be lost.

You try to take the device to another engineer because they usually repair circuits especially if it is not too bad since the mistake has been made which saving the security of the wallet in a device that can spoil. Offline saving is better for seed phrase to be saved offline to avoid this type of problems because if the phone couldn’t come on without formatting its data, then the Bitcoin is gone.
