It is doubtful that national self‑identification is sufficient for economic growth and development. This is more related to culture than to the economy. On the contrary, one should take from another civilization (even from the colonizers) what is useful and use it for the benefit.

However, the colonizers deliberately fostered corruption among the local elite. This is the problem for development. This is characteristic not only of Africa. And it seems that it is impossible to change this. Well, this is just one of the reasons for economic backwardness. The main reason is that the Third World is poor only so that the First World can thrive. Even Wallerstein wrote something along the lines that the First World exists only because there is a Third World. That’s just how the world‑system is structured.

However, I would disagree with one of your points. According to me, just by going back into the past age culture of our forefathers cannot really help in improving a nation. If you look at America, where they are not founded on any definite original culture however, due to being mixed up with every other part of the globe they stand well today. Backwardness of third world countries lies not only in foreign cultures' influences but lies in corruption, poor educational systems and lack of capable leaders.

Going to our root isn't about going back to dark age medieval practices of the forefathers but about working out our own developing from within and not depending on imported western ideology of development that worked for them. There are different parts towards development and when a nation borrows that which isn't working for them after years of experimenting. The relationship of Africa nations to the outside world of the West and Europe is uniquely unequal, domineering and dictating, it doesn't leave Africa nations to dictate and determine their own future even after colonial era is said to have been abolished these African nations still suffers from neocolonialism a worst form of colonialism that is being propagated and sustained through the local puppets installed in power.

What African nations need is a total delinking from all forms of relations that doesn't serve their self determination and actualisation economically and technologically, just as what the burkinabe political leader Ibrahim Traore has done by delinking from France that have been pillaging their gold and other resources for decades while no meaningful development has being recorded aside from multiple corrupt leaders that serves the French government interest while leaving the locals in abject poverty and suffering. Today we can see and witness how the transformation of Burkina Faso has become since the delinking and a focus on development from within and not depending on external aids that comes with conditions that doesn't promote real development.

Self realization is very important for even personal development, but then when this self realization is lacking nationally, that's when a nation and surrounding nations lacks self realization, personal realization becomes absolutely difficult and sometimes a fairy tales and individuals at the local or national level who has realized themselves and proposes for local or national realization usually leaves their family too early in these Nations.

What you have dropped about colonizers and their present time neocolonialism can be one hundred percent true but that's not without questions that requires deep look and reasoning. You pointed how these unrealistic nations are dieing, killing themselves, that's correct. But who is actually forcing all that? The colonizers or themselves?

Then saying these nations don't know themselves is like a joke because the most horrible things going on that's actually leading to all the tireless undevelopment or even  underdevelopment is their so called selfish unfuturistic shameless entities called leaders who has internally colonized their nation causing more room for foreign neocolonialism. Just trying not to put the whole blame or all the blame of their unrealistic self on the foreign colonizers and not defending them either.

OP, you should study the history of the United States and understand that this country consists of many nationalities, whose character has been shaped over centuries of immigration. This is exactly what forms the basis of American culture and economy. The same can be said about Russia, where dozens of nationalities also live, and this in no way contradicts the fact that these states are successful.
You should reconsider your views on nationalities and accept the idea of a single nation - humanity. The problems in the development of countries have nothing to do with race: people are the same everywhere. However, those who lead these countries sometimes forget about this, believing that someone should be one step higher, and someone should be content with little.

But i won’t say progress requires completely returning to the beliefs or culture of our ancestors. While still having to learn from other countries a we can preserve its culture and adopting of ideas that work. Being able to examine those idea decides on what fits. Is what matters instead of copying everything  blindly.things like education, accountability and technology can help to play a big role in development. So personally self realization should mean that we knowing who we and still open to useful ideas from others.

Self realization has to do with who we are, who we want to be and who we are becoming. Before we start to discuss on self realization the thought of personal improvement must be the first thing that burns in our minds never comfortable  with who, where and what we are becoming should be our heart beat.
As a leader of a country, there should be a drive to make it better that we met it. Rather than just occupying the position for formality sake or other reasons.

Self Realization is the first step towards greatness in life which includes nation's and continents.

Countries like China, the United States of America, the United kingdom, Russia, China, Singapore, Qater, United Arab Emirates etc has all understand this fact that, the only way to make reasonable progress is self Realization. You can't see a Chinese, American, United States of America, French, Singapore, Russia and Chinese citizens claiming belonging to other races.

All the nation's that are leading has come to the fact that they can't make any reasonable progress without thinking inward. Today if you look at third world nation's such as Africa you will find out that they don't think and do things like their ancestors .

For some reason, the way you draw conclusions feels very superficial and overlooks many factors. People or nations change due to awareness. Identity awareness does not automatically lead to development awareness, sometimes society begin to realize the need for change from crisis, external pressure, economic necessity and recognition on their limitation. Frankly speaking, awareness alone even for a great nations can not create development if it can't be translated in to real aplicable vision by eddective leadership, supported by capable institution, STEM based education and productive human capital and many factor.

So, i surely said catalyst of personal and national development are the ability to recognize what actually we lack, the wisdom and  strong desire to learn from other and strong institutional capacity to turn knowledge in to well targeted change. Self realization only show who we are. But awareness can show what wrong with us and what we supposed to be. We know the word of adaptability which making us realize that sometimes, old ways are no longer sufficient to face the future.

Your perspective makes me want to expansiate on it because I think what I had in mind has already been started by you.
So, in addition to what you said, self realization for the leaders or leadership is the first step to creating a better and developed country because individual self realization isn't enough to cause a country wide change unless such a one is in leadership position with followers who buy into their ideology.

Self realization might not cause a change of language or culture or religious beliefs, but could cause a new kind of thinking pattern that align with being better, being independent, being self sufficient, being our brothers keeper, being goal and vision oriented, abandonment of  old ways that serve no good or greater good and this is where and how the real change begins in earnest.

If you don't understand your problems, it will be very difficult to find solutions to them. The growth and development of every country lies in their hands. You can't expect anything more from someone that doesn't know where he is heading to, the same thing applies to countries. They might be some ideas from our ancestors that might be useful to us, so if there is any, i don't think that we should mind following them, as long as it going to benefial to us and our country at large.
