I do not really understand this because if I understand it and it was what that happened, definitely two people can not claim a single winning, only one person can claim it. If another person went their to claim the bet that has already been settled, definitely the betting shop will know about that.

I do not know the reason why it will lead to a felony. It is very possible that the woman want to outsmart the man that won the bet and that happened. The woman is a thief, but why felony charges like she did something that is very bad like she as stolen the money or the money has been given her and not giving the money back.

I was a bit confused, bit I have read the news over and over again, and I think I understand the scenario better now.

The thing is, a man won a bet, knowing that he won, and then went to the betting shop to claim his win, he went with someone else, but they didn't get to the counter together. On reaching the counter, he didn't hand over the winning slip to the workers, but he claimed that he has lost his slip, but he knows he won, and so, they had a way to track and know that he was the actual owner of the slip that was lost according to his claim. So with these verifications done(maybe name and ID cards or something), they paid out the winning to him and he left.

The he went out and called in the person he came with, and they went aside to somewhere else, it's now an agreement between them, and the man handed the betting slip to her now, and according to the story, they spent some time discussing, probably, reaching some agreement on what to be done. So after agreement, the lady went with the soposed slip that was missing to cash out the same game that has been cashed out by the previous man. At the counter, she claimed that the owner who is his friend had asked him to help him cash out. Knowing that the same game has been cashed out, she has to receive plenty of interrogations, and upon interrogations, she couldn't stand firm in defense, then they suspected her and held her as a criminal. Now she had to call the real man that has the slip, and guess what, the man denied ever giving her nay slip for anything.

Thats why she is been charged.. it's just too bad of them both.

In my opinion, the woman in this situation committed classic theft. 🙋

She didn't know the online casino had a system for verifying lost tickets. She also didn't take into account that the casino records the identities of all players (via video recording and other means). Initially, she was stealing money from her companion, not from the casino. She didn't consider that she would have to deal with casino security.

People prone to theft are usually not particularly intelligent... This woman couldn't distinguish winning tickets from cash. I don't think this was her first theft. She'd probably stolen cash from drunk men before. However, this time, she stole not cash, but a financial document. After the man collected his winnings, her actions effectively amounted to stealing money from the online casino (with all the ensuing consequences). Because an online casino isn't a helpless victim, it's not a drunk man who might not even remember what happened to him the night before.  🤷

P.S.

At least that's how I understood the whole story.

I think them catching on on her ploy is a no brainer, I think she is like 2 centuries too late to pull of that theft as i think the first thing any casino should look out and prepare solutions to when planning a security system because it's the most common ploy and one people will argue that this scam goes on In local bet agents shops but system are put in place to flag any won tickets.

The moral of the story here is don't steal a winning ticket, because some casinos can confirm who owns the ticket, and there are CCTVs to monitor everything in the vicinity, and you cannot fool the casino just because you have the ticket.
In the past, you could do it because casinos had a " has ticket can claim" policy.

Quote
An Indiana woman is facing felony charges for allegedly trying to cheat casino staff by cashing in a winning sports betting ticket despite knowing the winnings were already taken. Luckily, surveillance footage was enough to detect the attempt and prevent the alleged theft.

According to staff, the suspect claimed her earlier companion had given her the ticket to cash, which the winner denied.

Blue Chip Customer Suspected of Fraud Attempt

Do you have this kind of story in your local casinos?

I think the casino got lucky...
As much as technology today helps to prevent these types of scams, an authentic ticket is enough proof that a prize could be claimed with it.

The luck that I mean is the casino managed to prove the fraud through the security cameras. But imagine how they would prove the fraud without that!? The woman had an authentic and valid ticket, and the casino only had a system to say that prize had already been claimed, but nothing beyond that.
Who would be right? Can you trust only on a system’s records and not a piece of paper that is valid in principle?

I think that no matter how much security systems advance technologically, nothing replaces physical evidence.

The closest to this story I've witnessed in a local casino closest to where I once residing a case of a guy who wanted to claim some else's ticket because then the casino does operates on "has ticket can claim policy " , so while he was at it, someone in the casino spotted it and said this doesn't look like it belongs to the person attempting to claim it because he witnessed the original owner placing the bet and was given that ticket, from which he actually requested the owner allow him get some picks from there and place a bet on a new ticket he has made his own selections,  so seeing another person coming to cash out on that ticket gave him the impression that something was wrong,  so he called the attention of the cashier who does cash the ticket for them and while they were still deliberating on it,  the original owner walked in and did mentioned that the person who was attempting to cash out the ticket did stole it from him, he further mentioned that he owed him some money and he knew about  the ticket,  so seeing that it is a won ticket,  he then forcefully obtained the ticket and rushed to cash it so he can recover the money owed him, even as the won amount was morethan the money owed him.

I think Casinos should begin to look into to that policy,  because it can cause some people their money in situations where they get similar incident as this, the CCTV footage in the story of OP may sometimes not really save the day, or maybe as much as possible,  tickets should get customised identifiers such that only original owners could get access to such and other who get access to the ticket at any point will not be able to cash out  the ticket.

I don't really understand how these things are done in other countries but there's been no case of someone trying to Cash out a ticket that has already been claimed, this can only happen if the casino is disorganized and doesn't have a proper system to detect this. When someone wins a bet before giving out any money to the person the details of the ticket which is the Id Is being checked and cleared for cashout first.

When this process is done and the funds are being given to the winner it's already recorded and it's impossible to use that same id to cashout again. This is why I said that I don't really understand how things are done in other countries. This is actually something very simple and for casinos that know what they are doing this isn't something that should cause a problem.

Entering the number of that ticket will show the results in the database that it's already claimed. Aside from the cameras even without that, that is enough already to prove that person is trying to fool around.

Maybe she's so desperate that she's in need of money and thought to get away with it later but no.

Casinos are strict and in a serious business even the real winner and first claimant of it will take time to wait and verify the authenticity of the winning numbers.

But could this not have been prevented if the casino simply took the winning ticket from the original winner after giving them their winnings? or mark it in a manner that it is not reusable?
Casinos can see recent cash outs and can search their database for ticket number. I don’t know which she thought this could work. According to the source link OP shared, the winner cashed out his winnings without the ticket - claiming that he lost his ticket.

How did you know that the woman knew that the money won has already be claimed? She may know or she may not know. But one thing that is certain is that the betting slip is not belonging to her. So what she was doing by trying to claim what does not belong to her is thievery.

Do not mind the news, at least they can call it gambling platform or a place like sport betting shop.
According to the story, it seems she is connected to the original owner of the ticket. I believe they both planned it and he changed his story after she got caught.

This story was even wilder!

Afaik that guy had already cashed out almost $1400 using casino's Lost Ticket Process and pocketed the money!

Meanwhile that woman thought she could swoop in and claim that lost ticket while the guy was away, like when he went to restroom.

But CCTV camera spotted her. later when she was confronted by police, a meth pipe actually fell right out of her car! WTF!

Now facing Level 6 felony charge and discovery of drug paraphernalia her whole life is ruined.

Honestly, one person must be really stupid if they think they can get away with something like this. Obviously, the casino and bookies and lotteries have systems which allow them to know if a ticket was already used to claim money.

That woman was really stupid if she thought she could take the money and even if the casino or the lottery gave her """"""her"""""money, they will find out what happened eventually and the police will be after her in order to reclaim the money and throw her into jail.

Is there something to learn from this? It is that one is not supposed to try to commit fraud with lotteries.

According to the story, it seems she is connected to the original owner of the ticket. I believe they both planned it and he changed his story after she got caught.
Yes, that is exactly what will happen. But the man is denying it. That is the reason the court sued only the woman.

I think the court may find out the truth about what happened. Either the woman wanted to steal the money or the man also planned it together with her which will make them both to be thieves.

It leading to felony actually depends on the country, in some countries it might actually not  but for it to lead to felony here is because it considered a serious crime and criminal offense, either attempted or it was successful completed. This is actually a serious criminal offense and not made to be handled lightly all because she was not successful. If she was successful, the casino would have lost a lot of money.

Do you have this kind of story in your local casinos?

Speaking of betting spot in my area yes we still see scammer occasionally trying their luck with petty trick like ticket theft and double dipping. But outcome is always same. Sometime they get caught red handed in CHTV room, locked up in back office and are only released after their family is called in. At other time they get handed over to police.

You know, systems in both online casino and physical are so tight these days that moment you print any ticket, barcode and terminal ID are saved to casino's central server. Once their system marks it as paid, that ticket become worthless across every casino branch worldwide. I have no idea why people take such dumb risks despite having such high tech surveillance in place!

You would have understood if you had also read the news through the link attached in OP. It says that the woman was seen spending time with the winner of the ticket in the arena before the winner had cashed out the winnings. The winner went to the counter and told them that he lost the ticket, but since they have a process called "Lost Ticket Process", they used that to identify him as the actual owner of the ticket and he got the funds. After that, the woman showed up with the lost ticket and claimed that the ticket was given to her by the man who is the actual owner of the ticket so that she can cash it out for him, which was a clear lie, and the ticket owner denied her claim.

What probably happened was that the man actually had lost the ticket, but the woman had found it but didn't tell him about it because she wanted to cash it out. However, the man went to the casino staff, verified his identity and that he owned the ticket probably through some ID or something, and claimed the prize, but the woman thought the ticket is still unclaimed, and she can claim it and take the money. It's cheating, she tried to cheat the casino, which is why she got charged with a felony and is going to spend two and a half years in prison for the act.

Do you have this kind of story in your local casinos?

Are there not id numbers too each ticket? Probably because I’m used to the online casinos so I’m still wondering if it’s even possible to try to cheat the system.
So was it really possible to cashout twice if the staff was not paying much attention?

This cases I’ve encountered is that which people come claiming wins that doesn’t belong to them on x and that particular bookies added a feature that you could verify winning on every slip just by using a verification code attached to the winning slip.

Not from the casino, but there were cases in Croatia where people were bragging with their winning betting tickets on social media and sharing pictures of it, only for thieves to use the code and get the money instead of them.

Lesson learned the hard way I guess.

We are in a mordenize world now and gone are those days that people can steal a winning ticket and cash out with it, now there are CCTV camera mounted everywhere which makes it difficult for it to be stolen and claimed. I think it's only a dullard that can even think of such nonsense because casinos will detect if the ticket has already been used to claim the prize as and they will certainly know that it has been used.

Once the ticket number of a particular slip is inputted in the system it will immediately show that that ticket has been won and the prize being claimed so I don't see any possibility of someone cashing out on a ticket that had already been won and the cash paid out and even if the mistake was done and the money paid out it will be traced and the person will be arrested by the police so it's not possible that one can claim a ticket that has already been won.

Casinos are fully aware of such fraud and all other frauds, which is why they have detection tools and CCTV. We are living in a modern age of technology, and casinos are quick to add these security measures to avoid this.

Here in our country, there were reports of past lotto winners whose tickets were stolen because they failed to sign their tickets with their names. Proof of ownership is very important if you want to claim your winnings.

Bo doubt, casinos do have all the mechanism in place to protect their community and also their platforms. So fraud is not what they would overlook because they know people would definitely want to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way so in other to avoid such, all the items you have mentioned are out in place for protection of their platform and also the community and anybody who makes the mistake of going contrary to what is obtainable in the system would definitely go in for it.

This proves that a physical ticket doesn’t necessarily prove anything anymore.  But then again, I thought casinos have records of already cashed tickets so it’s not even possible that she would’ve succeeded to get away with such a thing. And I wonder what even gave her such an idea to want to indulge in such a theft. But for what I know, that woman may not really know much about the casino and gambling because if she does, she wouldn’t have attempted to indulge in such.

If what you explained here was the case then the both of them needs to be charged because it's indeed a criminal act. In the past when there wasn't many casino companies as it is today, betting companies do request for winning slips before they can make a payout and I believe it was because they were avoiding similar cases like this. The CCTV really helped to expose them otherwise they would have vehemently insisted that they never cashed out the bet and since they were still in possession of the winning ticket it would have looked like they are telling the truth and can decide to sew the casino company using evidence of the winning slip. This is one of the reasons why I don't blame people who are strick and maintains on using the normal procedures for their business instead of trying to help someone and put themselves in a bigger problem.
